Heard worldwide on the iHeartRadio add now your high tech Texan, Michael Garfield. Well, after this busy week, Now what do we do?
We have a super Bowl hangover, the Valentine's Day hangover. If you're in the Houston area. Guess what. Get the boots polished, get the hat ready to roll because it is almost Rodeo time. The cook office next week airs so much to do every February is just why does it we gain? I know, I gain so much weight, well not so much weight. But it's a tough month. Am I complaining? No? Not really,
because they still have a job to do. But part of my job and with the with air quotes, I get to go out and sample a lot of food and and I you know, drink a lot of things and just and I do it because I'm a reviewer and This is why you listen to my show, because I have to go through all the nasty crap that you
don't want to taste, all the yummy stuff that I can recommend. People think, Oh, how come you don't wait three hundred dollars, Well no, this Actually I would love a sponsorship Biozimpic or zep bound will go be somebody, No, no, no, I have to run it off actually to have to do physical labor and I just sample a little bit. So we'll talk about that later because we have so much other things to talk about in such a short amount of time. You know, I'm a massive sports
fan. I was in Las Vegas last week a lot of the Super Bowl events. It was just a ball. We've got pitchers and catchers reporting so many things in the world of sports, but sometimes they bite you in the butt. Because today a very short, high tech text and show. We are out of here at forty five minutes after the hour because we have to make way for the University of Houston Cougars and my University of Texas Longhorns basketball
game which is being played right here in Houston. We will pick that up. Because KPRC Radio, we are the official besketball flagship, I guess partners of the University of Houston Cougars. So you've got a really quick time to pick up the phone, get on your email, get on your little social media and talk to me. Answer. I am here to ask answer your questions whatever you need, almost for anything, as long as it's not politics, Alreny world history. I am your guy. Seven one three two one
two five nine five zero two one two five nine five zero. There is Calum over here. He is manning the phones. You can also find me a high tech texts and spell the whole thing out on x on Instagram, Facebook, you can buy me on Michael Garfield and of course high tech textan dot com. How did you watch the Super Bowl? Did you like the game? Everybody? It was a good game. I ended up, I think overall because I was in Vegas, where you legally can place bets on
games. I think I came out a little behind on the bets. And I knew I was a Kansas City fan, and I bet Kansas City plus two and a half, which they did? You want to? And this is why I shouldn't bet. And I'm going to get into the more technical, technological fun stuff up, but hear me out. The over under was forty seven and a half points. It was a very slow game. I took the over because I'm an optimist. Optimists, you know, the sun's going to come out tomorrow. Oh, it's gonna be a fun game.
Everybody's going to score touchdowns, everybody gets points, and we all have fun. Forty seven and a half points, very slow game to start. It does not look like it's nearly going to hit forty seven and a half total points. Over when you combine both of the team scores, all of a sudden, it goes to overtime, and I'm thinking it was I think it was thirty eight points going into overtime or something like that. And sure enough, guess what I'm thinking, Oh my gosh, I have an opportunity.
Uh. San Francisco forty nine ers, they kick the field goal. Kansas City Chiefs. They come back and they score a touchdown. They score a touchdown to win the game. Final score forty seven? Is it forty seven? Forty six points? Right? It's forty six points. I think was a score all they all they needed a score was an extra point. You don't kick an extra point in overtime when you win the game, that extra
point would have put me over. Anyway, I don't want to talk about it because I had one hell of a craps rud at the brand new Fountain Blue Hotel. Yes, I do travel too, so if you want some recommendations somewhere to stay in Las Vegas, I am your guy at seven one three two one two five nine five O. Did you watch it at home or did you watch it at a bar? Did you watch it on streaming? There are so many ways to watch TV right now, and I and
I've noticed. Let me, I don't know if you notice this because if you watch it at home or if you can't compare to what is happening. But I have noticed this because when I watch games, I text with my buddies who are watching the same game too, and they're watching it in different cities. They're watching it at home, they're watching it at bars. And when you broadcast things, where you stream things, it's not exactly synced up, and in some cases you are really way behind real time playing. Which
is it is? It's stupid that it sucks. Tens of millions of people they were gathered around to watch the Super Bowl, but they weren't all watching it at the exact same time I saw it. Where was it? This was on the verge and I have noticed this before, and they actually did it in interesting article in comparison, here's what's going on here at home in the Houston area. I have Comcast Exfinity cable, expensive as hell. I
did not know why I still have it. I should cut the cord, I know, I should, just you know, beat my own dog food into it. Every time I'm watching a game and I'm texting with my buddies, a lot of them are in Dallas. They are telling me what's happening before I can see it, because in my particular case Comcast Exfinity, it's maybe thirty to forty five seconds behind real time what's happening, and so they're spoiling it from me. And that's exactly what happened in the Super Bowl.
Cable streams of the of the Big Game were about fifty seconds behind what was happening on the field, and if you have streaming services, it was even worse. Some viewers were watching a stream that was about a minute and a
half behind the real world. And what that does? It maybe not it doesn't mean a lot to you, but it leaves plenty of time for social media post and text and push notifications to spoil what was happen happening in the game Hulu, NFL plus Direct TV stream they were on average more than a minute behind the action on the field. Listen, I understand there's going to be some delay between a real time event and footage appearing on TV sets across
the country, but people, they need to improve this stuff. I mean, the delays in the field. Is it a gambling issue? You know? You know, I'll tell you what. Let's actually pause the game and reset it about a minute later, and I can bet against my friends setting next to me because I could check my uh my text and find out what actually happened. Yeah, there's there's a few ways to get around this thing.
But if you did, anybody experience delays that you knew of, because listen, if you don't go online, if you don't do social media, if you ain't talking to anybody, you're sitting there watching you on your on your on your home. You could be watching a three week old presentation of a football game. It doesn't matter to you, but in some in some cases, seconds mean a lot, a lot, I mean money, and it beads dollars and it means time. Listen. When we come back,
I'm going to follow up on this about ways to watch free television. I did a story on Channel eleven. It ran around the website right before the Super Bowl because Channel eleven here is CBS and brought in the super Bowl was broadcast on CBS, and so I kind of explain that you can get free television you don't need to pay. No, well, yes, there's some asterisk, there's some caveats, But when we come back, I'm going to tell you how you right now can get free TV year day in, day
out. There's over one hundred and thirty one hundred and forty different TV channels right now floating above your head, free that you don't have to pay. I'll take that. I'll take your questions. Coming back on a very short
and special high tech textan channel Happy Happy Saturday. Should you be listening live on KPRC nine to fifty am, all across Southeast Texas And if you're listening on stream, well, you're actually may probably a little behind, maybe thirty second kids are a minute behind, which is actually what we're going to talk
about here to zech. But still you get the great content, the wonderful humor, and great tips and if you still want to contact me, I'm pretty much monitoring all of my social media high tech text and Hi g h T E C h T E x A N. Michael is my name. That is Callum over here. He's answering your phone calls, pushing the buttons.
We have just about thirty minutes, twenty five minutes or so we get out of got to get out of here a little early today, make way for the University of Houston Cougars in the Texas Long Orange with a basketball game. They are tipping off well. Actually, our pregame coverage is forty five minutes after the hour, so hurry up and get in this portion of the show. We're brought to you. Thank you so much to Papa's p LR RUM. I don't know if you had a cocktail or ten during the Super
Bowl, but rum is in really having some fun with it. This is Ernest Hemingway's special recipe and family made in Key West. You can get it at yourspection, in Total Wine and pretty much where all good liquor is sold. Pop p I l a R. Yes, they have the blonde rum, they have the dark rum, but you may want to try some that has been soaked in a cask strinked rye whiskey barrel. So good people, so good. Why not have a little post Valentine Day celebration. Also you
can get it at wonderful restaurants. I need to actually host the cocktail hour with Papa's PLR. Good partners of mind. That the Capitol Grill near the Galeria area guarding Grace, Well, that's a great restaurant. That's downtown. They serve it. Blue Lagoon down in Texas City, that's that big lagoon on Lago Mar. They have several bottles of there too. So I'll be I don't know, let me get let me get through the rodeo and everything, and then we'll have a little Papa's PLR A little fun time here.
I told you that streaming sometimes slows things down versus real time, Like right now it's real time and by the time my voice gets through the our equipment into the broadcast ten and plus. Also here on AM radio, we have a seven second delay. We've always had a seven second delay because we have live phone calls coming in and that prevents you from cussing at us. On live radio, we have what's called a dump button in here. The point is that's that's for a purpose. On live radio, we do callings.
I was talking about the Super Bowl last weekend. Depending on how you watched it, you may have seen it broadcast that was anywhere between thirty seconds to maybe a minute and a half behind real time streaming services. If you were watching it maybe NFL dot Hulu or NFL dot Com or NFL Plus or something, they were behind real time, and it's it's kind of a spoiler because I watch TV with a second screen in my hand. That phone is always in my hand. My buddies are like, oh my god, did you
see the play yay touchdown? Man woo? My team covered? Can you believe they dropped it? Fumble? And it ruins for me and could ruin it for you if your TV hasn't caught up to that point right now, there are ways to watch it. One of the best ways to watch things, to me in absolute is about as close to real time as possible is to get off of cable, get off of streaming, and do something that man, we're going to go back to the old days. We're gonna go
ota ota over the air if you were of age. And again, I let's just say I grew up. I was a little kid in the seventies.
In our homes, we had these big TV antennas, and they were big that generally you had to have a company get on your roof and they had to stall these big, wiry looking things and they point them to them to the direction of the TV towers where your ABC, CBS and NBC and maybe PBS at it as I Fox wasn't even around, and you would pick up over the air TV signals and we got a whopping five to ten channels, be it VHF or UHF, and I know them thowing acronyms here that
maybe half my audience has no clue what I'm talking about, you kids. And then at the end to end, it was it was then cable came in. Cable came in really in the early eighties. Then and then obviously there's satellite. We know there's no need for antennas. You do have a satellite dish in some cases, but the fact is it's still out there because TV stations, by law by the FCC, they had to broadcast, and
they still have to broadcast over the air. Now. These signals are digital DTV digital TV signals, and yes, you can pick these things up over the air ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Telemundo stations that do not broadcast in English. There are a ton of a matter of fact, I think there's one hundred and thirty one hundred and sixty different channels and sub channels here in the Houston area alone that you don't need one cent to subscribe to
them. They are fr ee garf style my favorite four letter word. And I talked about this last week right before I did a segment on Channel eleven
CBS because CBS broadcast is Super Bowl. To let people know, hey, man, if you don't have you know, if all you do is subscribe to streaming services and you don't have cable, that you don't think you can get CBS in this particular case, let you know that all you need is a little indoor or even a small outdoor antenna that you can hook up to your TV, your digital TV, and you can get free over the AIRTV.
My point being, and when I said the best way to get real time TV is over the air, there's very little delay from where it's broadcast to what you're seeing versus streaming services, cable services and what have you. And on top of that that, in most cases the picture is much more
clear. It's not nearly, if any compression, because on satellite, I mean on cable, how many how many cable channels do We have hundreds of cable channels and you've got one little pipeline, one little coaxle cable coming into your home. They've got to compress these channels and so it's pixelated. Maybe they don't look good and there's not a lot of four K in some instances. But now for over the year, you're getting this raw feed in real
time. What do you do? Will you go out? If you have a digital TV, and most digital TV nowadays they have a built in tuner. Okay, tuner is good. You still need a little antenna and there's digital antennas right now. I was playing on this website antennasdirect dot com. A lot of great articles that you can read about how to do it and how simple it is. They add reviews of TVs and everything. But if you're tired of all these prices, how much do you pay for cable two
hundred, two hundred and fifty bucks. Obviously, it's the Internet, it's the television. You may have streaming sticks. Man, you get a good a TV antenna and you're going to get free access to live TV channels provided you can catch their signals. You set it up, you'll watch live events. You've got sports on the your broadcast networks. You got your news, and you get everything else for it free, no subscription. You just buy
the antenna. These the antennas run anywhere between thirty forty bucks. Gonna get a little bigger win that maybe you have to put outside because you live a little further away from the actual broadcast tower. Yeah, maybe they're gonna be one hundred and twenty hundred and thirty dollars. But that's it. It's a one time purchase. To be sure. To be clear, all you're gonna pick up is local over the year TV. You're not gonna get any paid You're not gonna get CNN and I get an ESPN. You know, I
getting HBO. No, no, no, you're gonna get in this case, ABC thirteen, Channel two, kp r C, Channel eleven, KHOU. You're gonna get channel eight PBS. You're gonna get the local Telemundo feed, but still you're gonna get all the major during football season, most all the football games other than Monday night and Thursday night on Amazon. You're gonna get all the Sunday football games, which you're broadcast on CBS, Fox, and then the NBC night game. Obviously, football season's over, but that's
that. Baseball basketball, they're gonna be a little different. Baseball obviously is a regional sport, and they have deals with Cable in the satellite basketball. A lot of that stuff is on TBS cable. A lot of that stuff is sorry TNT, A lot of the stuff's on ESPN. They do broadcast some of the stuff on ABC. But I'm letting you know there are options out out there right now. It's very simple to do. You get it. You get an antenna. Sometimes they're small enough if you live close enous
to the broadcast antennas. Here in the Houston area. The majority of the broadcast TV actually in radio towers are in Missouri City, which is on the southwest side of Houston. So if you live anywhere in Fort Benn County, you are golden man. You're less than anywhere between one mile that maybe fifteen miles away. If you are on the other side of town, you don't have a direct shot between buildings. Sometimes there are a few other antenna towers
you need to check it. Go to that website. I told you Antenna's direct and there's actually a app you can download, Antenna Point. I believe you put your address in actually your GPS and your phone will actually pinpoint where you are in your home. It'll show you which way to point your antenna when you purchase one at home and put it up at home, and tell you how far it is away. Six miles, seven miles, eight miles. To be sure, anything over fifty sixty miles it's almost impossible to get.
Be sure to read it. Don't believe anything that says one hundred to two hundred mile range. It's physically impossible. Whoever invented television back of the day doesn't work works with radio some cases, not with TV. There's your TV update. I am here to help you. I am here to save you money. What else I can do? Fifteen more minutes before we got to get out of here at a short high tech texting show. We're going to be right back Michael Warfield. That's the name. Believe it or not.
This is the final segment of this week's High Tech Texan Show. Tell you what if you can get a job where you work forty five minutes a week. I'd say take it, but then again I would ask to be paid for doing this too. It is a short version of the High Tech Texting Show. We're out of here and just about ten twelve minutes making for the University of Houston Cougar's University of Texas Long Orange basketball game here on KPRC nine to fifty am. That's our flagship where we broadcast this from, So
you better hurry up and get in. Thanks to US Coins and Jewelry for this shortened segment. They've been around for thirty some odd years. I'm in Vegas last week, true stor. I'm in Vegas last Saturday, Super Bowl weekend. I'm at the Palazzo Hotel, getting ready to go to the Playboy Bunny Brunch. Don't ask, it's a whole news story. I'm near the checking desk for Palazzo. I look over and who do I see? I
see freaking Kenny Duncan. Kinney runs US Coins and jewelry. He was just he flew in for the day with some buddies to do some gamble or something like that, and we just I bet we talked for four or five minutes. And obviously I showed him that I'm always wearing the rolex that I got from US Coins and Jewelry. Good, dude, go tell them, you go tell him that. Hey, man, I heard you're at the Super
Bowl. I hope you want some money, Katie Freeway. I tend just at VOSS if you want to sell or buy any coins like my uncle is doing. My man, my uncle is a coin collector. He walked in there last week and they gave him top dollar for coins. He did not even need to use my name. But that's my job, is to let you know if you want to buy some coins, some jewelry. Rolex's a lot of women's joy. They had a very big Valentine's Day, by the
way, very big. They got some beautiful diamond ear rings and tennis bracelets, almost anything you need. But they are just top top doutch people at US coins and Jewelry dot com, and so was good seeing them. A few of the things that what we do in the world oh do I want to talk about the Apple Vision Pro. I haven't once mentioned this Apple Vision Pro, this new ar VR type of thing, because I'm not a big Apple guy, and the fact is it's very expensive and I really don't think
it's ready for consumer use yet. But the only funny thing, I'm sorry, I'm not making fun of Apple, but I am. There's a big uptick in users returning it to the store. They purchased it less than two weeks. Apple allows you to return any product within fourteen days of purchase, and for the first wave of Vision Pro buyers, we're almost right there. This is that uncomfortable, big thing that looks like a ski visor that you put on your face and you could see augmented reality and virtual reality. I
have not tried one, so I'm not giving it a review. I am only reporting what i've heard, not even anagotally. These are the actual columns I've seen the Verge dot com USA today. They've been written about it, writing about it, but it's not that comfortable. It gives some people some headaches, it gives some people some eyestrain. These are the top reasons that people say they are returning their Vision Pro headsets, I listen. I've used
a few ar augmented the meta from meta Facebook meta company. I just is it an age appropriate thing? This is not going to be that people thought this is going to be the start of something like an iPhone. It's not. You don't wear these things every day. You just it's a niche type of thing. Point is, they're returning him. So if you do happen to have a vision pro, I'd love to hear from you, get you on to my show. I maybe one hundred percent wrong. This could be
the next thing since slic spread. But again, just the reviews. I'm there. It's cool, it's neat, But in terms of everyday usage, you're gonna use it for a week or two. Maybe it's gonna gain get some dust by sitting on the shelf. Maybe you're gonna return it after fourteen days. I just thought that was interesting. I'm playing with a new watch. I got a new smart watch that I cannot tell you who it's from. I cannot tell you that anything about it. It's under embargo for the
next week or ten days. I love smart watches. I will tell you this. It's not from Apple. I'm gitterally and Android or a non Apple watch or anything, and it was really really neat. It's got some neat features. What I'm about to tell you has nothing to do with the one i'm testing. Samsung, which I have three Samsung watches. They're getting the role to roll out a feature that I like this because these are tools you wear on your wrist that can monitor and help save lives, save you pre
screen for health or something. And it comes to heart rate monitor, how many steps you're taking? You know, right? It did? It gets you in shape. Maybe it's the carrot in front of your face, maybe it's your motivator. Whatever. But I saw Samsung just got FDA approval for a sleep apnea feature on the Galaxy Watch and they're rolling it out later this
year. So the FDA they've given the green light to sleep ATNA. Now I don't have sleep apnea, but I know a lot of people do, a lot of my buddies have this sleep APNA and you wear the cpat machine. But what it is if you wear this Galaxy Watch, there's a detection feature. And don't ask me how the whole thing works, but it's going to be compatible. I think it's with the Galaxy Watch wearables, which I have several of them. Maybe you know what, Maybe I have sleep apnea.
I'm gonna can't wait for this thing. Might watch up later this year. But if you're age twenty two or older and you have not been diagnosed with the condition, to check for signs of sleep apneum it allows you to do so. It looks for signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea over a two night monitoring period. That you're going to need to track your sleep for more than four hours twice over a ten day period to use this thing.
Twenty five percent a tenth of women in the US have obstructive sleep apnea. Some neat features over there, so you can have a good night's sleep. By the way, I don't have sleep apneum But should I just should I give out my hip over here? A little trouble breathing has raised your hand? Or call me or we're almost out of time? Has anybody had deviated septim surgery a procedure inside their nose to correct a deviated septum. I don't have time to take your calls, but do me a favor. Pop
me a note. Michael at high tech textan dot com spell the whole thing out. Just it just, it's I just I want. I need feedback from people who have had it, yay or nay. Some people tell me it's a life changer. I can breathe, I can run. I'm not out of breath, alive. Did it hurt deviated septum? Hit me up? I need to know ya. Your name Michael at high Tech Texan dot com. See, finally, once you're doing something for me after I've been
wasting twenty two years of my saturdays helping you, helping you. What are the things cars? I'm a big car guy. I got about two or three more minutes every week I get to test drive a car. People always ask me, Michael, what are you driving? What's good? This past week I was in a beautiful twenty twenty four Sierra twenty five hundred crew cab. It's the at four x GMC has the one of their largest I mean, it's a twenty five hundred. It was a massive truck. I had
it for a week. I do not get paid for these reviews. I am a member of the Texas Auto Riders Association. I get these directly from the manufacturer. I do not deal a dealership. So if you want to buy one, great, If you don't, I don't care. But all I know this had a Duromac six point six liter turbo diesel. This thing was let's say I'm six foot tall, this thing easily standing from their tires all the way to the top of this must have been a seven and a
half foot vehicle. Priced eighty one thousand dollars standard. Oops, I'm sorry. I had the AT four X edition. This is the one that you take off row with all the accents, the bigger tires. Total price one hundred and three thousand dollars. For one hundred and three thousand dollars, this better half air conditioning and sleep six people. But it was a dang good ride. GMC one of my favorite manufacturers. They really really did a good
job. And for some reason, you are a rancher, you want something big to prove when you roll up to the roadia here the next week or two that you are a big Texan. Check out the GMC twenty twenty four Sierra twenty five hundred and if you don't want to, I do not care because I'm not getting paid for it. But I absolutely like that for a twenty one of my favorite larger, much more and more than a halftime. If you want a massive truck that hauls everything, there you go. Other
than that. I hate saying this, but the show is almost done people. You know why gotta make way. We got to get out of here for the University of Houston, University of Texas. We've got a basketball game. Your Cougar's my Longhorns, who you got, Calum read everybody else? Thank you for at least getting me on for forty five minutes next week. If there's no basketball, I am here. We'll talk about it because I
will be judging barbecue brisket at the Rodeo Barbecue Cookoff. If you go out there, look for me, and I guarantee I look the other way. My name is gar Hey. Thanks for tuning in, people, because right now my shortened show is over.
