Mayor Owens first job was at McDonald's, she spent 11 years in law enforcement before becoming interested in how laws are created and who is creating them. She then ran for a seat on the city council in the city of Eastpointe three times before she won in 2017. Three years later she is the first African American Mayor of the city of Eastpointe.
