Episode description

"Tennessee is under the national spotlight."

Preserving healthy communities and city livability impacts everyone, and having crucial conversations is critical for education and activation. In that spirit, New Memphis invited Jenna Dunn (Trans Services Specialist at OUTMemphis), Anu Iyer (Volunteer Coordinator and Community Manager at OUTMemphis), Krista Wright Thayer (Director of Outreach and prevention at Friends for Life) into the studio.

We discuss the real-life implications of recent laws, how individuals and organizations can act, and how diversity keeps us all strong.

NOTE: This episode deals with the topic of recent decisions at the Tennessee state level regarding gender affirming care for minors (TN House Bill 1), drag performances (TN House Bill 9), and the ripple effects impacting all communities. It might be helpful to review the current legislations in Tennessee for clarity in this episode. This conversation was recorded on April 4th, 2023. Since then, legislations and executive orders have shifted slightly and continue to go back and forth, and as a result, some of the things discussed in this episode have also shifted.

Additional Notes: Please note that this episode discusses topics including the full spectrum of healthcare and social justice rights, including suicide prevention and discrimination, that might be triggering to some.
