With its technical achievements in animation, its intricate storytelling, and twisted visions of body horror, AKIRA remained a cult classic for years in the U.S. among nerds and movie buffs. It wasn't before long that its influence bubbled to the surface, inspiring countless artists and filmmakers, making a lasting impact in the mainstream.
