In mass timber construction , land and War , thistleton are promoting a new model building piloting post-Grenfell holistic design of medium-rise residential buildings in timber .
The Institute of Structural Engineers has teamed up with War Thistleton to create a comprehensive set of design principles and guides for designing and constructing multi-storey mass timber buildings that adhere to strict requirements to meet the UK's new fire safety regulations .
The initiative is supported by people who are involved in Build by Nature , and it's also developed in collaboration with the UCL Department of Civil , environmental and Geometric Engineering , bureau Harrop and Gardner Thobold .
So if you want to have a look at the amazing work that's being done , please head to our LinkedIn feed and you'll be able to see all the information to download the full article and read it for yourself .
It's great to see some cross-pollination between the steel and the timber industry , or sectors with timber structures being supported by steel systems , in particular steel bracing systems .
Steel offers a combination with mass timber that provides lateral stability , load distribution , increased rigidity , resilience and seismic forces and enhance the overall improved safety for buildings .
Another thing that's quite interesting to note is that the tolerances for steel , unlike concrete and particular wet form wet pour concrete , have very similar tolerances within millimeters , and so it makes a perfect accompaniment to mass timber . If you'd like to see what Acetra is up to , please head to our LinkedIn feed .
There's an amazing video with steel systems for bracing for a multi-story residential apartment using clt . And goodman fielder is the company . It's based in melbourne , in a little town called morabbin , where there's actually an airport , and their first pilot project , which is venturing into mass timber construction , utilizes 7,019 pieces , or 631 tons of timber .
The timber is sourced from suppliers made from sustainable plantation forests and , according to the company , mass timber construction is expected to reduce the property's embodied carbon by about 24 compared to conventional steel systems . If you want to have a look at goodman's amazing five-star green rated building system , head to our linkedin feed .
The glulam portal frame structure is impressive . The energy efficiency and decarbonisation are in the spotlight at the Barnaby School , part of the series of BC Hydro Clean Energy champions , businesses , homes and institutions , large and small , recognised for reducing their reliance on fossil fuels .
What do a 12-storey wooden building and a heat pump installation course and a display of various roof and wall assemblies and retrofits of two dozens of campus buildings have in common ? They're all part of BC's Institute of Technology , the BCIT Living Labs' show-and-tell approach to energy use in buildings .
If you want to see more of BCIT's Living Labs , please head to our LinkedIn feed . And Portland-based PAE Consulting Engineers wanted its new headquarters to be among the world's most environmentally friendly a living building that stood five stories tall but tread lightly on the world around it . So the company designed its office to last 100 years .
Powered by renewable energy , the building recycles its water and even gathers urine to convert into fertilizer , generating more than 30,000 a year since 2022 . For the building material itself , pae chose mass timber wood that can be used in place of concrete and steel .
As we all know , because you're avid listeners to the podcast , if you'd like to have a look at this amazing pae consulting engineer building , please head to our linkedin feed . And that's it , folks . That's all we've got time for this week in mass timber construction land . Don't forget to hit subscribe . Never miss an episode .
