An historical materialist understanding of oppression is crucial. Contrary to the beliefs of those who think that the oppression of women is somehow biological or innate, Marxists understand that women's oppression has not existed forever. Rather, it arose with the rise of class society, and it can be done away with through revolutionary struggle.
