RUSHDIE LIVES (125)
Episode description
Matt and Ryan talk about their journey to the Magic Castle in Hollywood. At around 28:30, we discuss the main topic: author Salman Rushdie, who in 1989 was sentenced to death by the Ayatollah of Iran on the charge of writing a novel, "The Satanic Verses," was stabbed by a 24-year-old man in western New York. (Since recording, Rushdie was taken off a ventilator and is awake and talking.) What follows is a recounting of Rushdie's life since the death sentence, or fatwa, was issued and a division among our cohosts on the act of pursuing art shielded by free expression.
