Chapter 29, Gladys and Jimmy Smiles. Barabal's next move toward escape is to make use of her portion of the supplies, but as she and her friends bring the kit to Jimmy Smiles, the miner who has agreed to buy them, two things happen to Gladys Bullock, one auspicious, one ominous.

Chapter 30, This Is My Salvation. Colonel Begg and Malvina have gathered the women for an auction rehearsal. Barabal, who would normally be upset by this event, sits chatting with a new friend, Louisville Lizzy, planning their lives away from Dawson and the madness of the Rush. Lorcan takes advantage of the moment to bask in Barabal's new mood, not knowing that it's having gold in her poke that has relaxed her and changed her view of her prospects, not knowing that she plans to escape.
