Episode description

Emerging from a 13-year career in HR Management, Janine Hernandez, the owner of the Book Publishing Academy, discovered her passion for books and publishing, and stepped into the shoes of an online coach. With a leap of faith, she navigated the transition right before the pandemic, and to her surprise, was welcomed with open arms by a community eager to learn. Janine has since then been helping budding authors carve their path in the world of publishing, through her online coaching venture.

Janine's journey has been about more than just starting something new; it's about overcoming fear and building a community. She's fostered a culture of connection and vulnerability within her team, which she believes is crucial for the creative process of writing and publishing. To those teetering on the edge of a new venture, she has one message: do it anyway. Yes, it's scary. Yes, it's risky. But the power of a strong support system, like the one she's built within her organization, is instrumental in overcoming those fears.

Janine's Book Publishing Academy is a dream-catcher for aspiring authors. Through her coaching program, she provides the essential tools and guidance needed to navigate the publishing world. In our chat, she shares how to stay motivated, the importance of surrounding yourself with positivity, and dealing with vulnerability when it comes to sharing personal stories. Her mission? To help others realize their dreams of becoming authors. Listening to this episode with Janine is like getting a masterclass in taking the leap, facing your fears, and believing in the power of community. Dive in, and remember, as Janine says, "You are already a millionaire. You just need to have faith that God will sign the check.

She is an author herself bestseller as well And I am just so excited she is going to be actually one of the speakers at my book launch event . So I'm very , very excited to have Miss Janine Hernandez on this episode today . Hey , janine , how are you Hi .

Speaker 2

Thank you so much for having me . I'm pretty good . How are you ? I'm doing ?

Speaker 1

good , Good . So listen , talk to me a little bit . You know , because I've been promoting you . People are asking me who is this Janine chick that you've been promoting ? Talk to us a little bit about the Book Publishing Academy . How did you get started ? What motivated you to want to take this route in a Book Publishing career ?

Speaker 2

To be honest with you , it wasn't anything that I ever thought of doing . but I would have a lot of people that would reach out to me wanting to publish their books , wanting me to coach them , And so I kind of just fell into this profession .

And then , after coaching up to 12 people at one time , I was like , okay , it's time for me to really take this serious and start doing online coaching . But that's kind of how I got started was like God just threw me in it .

Speaker 1

Now , before that , you had a completely different career , right .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I was in HR management .

Speaker 1

You were in HR management , yeah , so . And then you decided hey , i'm going to go ahead and follow my dreams and take this path on .

Speaker 2

Yeah , to be honest with you , i was in HR management and I loved my career to a certain extent because I could help people , i could fix problems and corporations . But I quickly figured out . Well , actually it took me some time , it took me 13 years , but I figured out that that wasn't what fulfilled me in life .

And one day I just kind of sat with myself and I was like what makes you feel fulfilled ? And that was books and book publishing .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and this was something you had thought about , right , since , like you were nine years old when you said this was something that was already back in your mind back then .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I had started writing since I was nine And I always knew that I wanted to publish books and that I was going to do it my way , not the traditional publishing way . So I've always known , at a very young age , that this is what I would grow up to be was an author . I just didn't know how big of a capacity it would end up being .

I never knew that I would end up leaving corporate America to do this full time .

Speaker 1

And so tell me , how was it that you I mean , I know that you just explained a little bit , but you know where did it begin , to where you decided I want to coach other people to do this . I want , I want to take this different direction .

I don't want to just write books and publish my own books , but I also want to open this door up for other people .

Speaker 2

So , like I said , a lot of people would reach out to me wanting to publish their books And it was right before the pandemic . I had this . I had walked away from corporate America , i knew that it was time to leave And right before the pandemic , i had this intuitive feeling that I needed to go virtual online coaching .

I don't know why , but I just started to create an outline And God positions you in situations that you need to be or that he wants you to be in . If you are obedient and you listen to him , he will align you in just the right path . And so I started to just jot down ideas and then the pandemic hit March or April of 2019 . And I didn't know .

I mean all the jobs shut down . Everybody was at home And it was just an interesting space . I hired a coach and I started to post online and Facebook groups that I was going to launch this program , this online program , and that I needed beta testers and that I had this program built out . I was going to start August 1st And I had .

In two days , i had over 45 women book calls with me from a Facebook group And out of 35 women , i made $21,000 in two days and I had no program . I still had no pro . I was pitching them a program , but I had no program . So I had two weeks to record my videos , create my workbook , upload it to a course program and we launched August 1st 2019 .

And so that's what I mean that God will position you in places . If you are obedient , he will move the mountains for you , and so , yeah , that's kind of my story . Honestly , i just started posting about it and saying this is what I'm doing And we had $21,000 in two days And that's how the Book Publishing Academy started .

Speaker 1

Wow , And I'm just going to say y'all , i stumbled across the Book Publishing Academy because I launched out on my own back in July . So next month or in a few weeks , july 8th is when I launched out Mommy on a Mission my business of life and career coaching , and I knew that I wanted to coach other women .

I knew that I wanted to kind of like wean myself out of the nonprofit world into starting my own business And I was doing research . I wanted to know what other life coaches were about . So I was just kind of doing some research , some homework and stuff , just to kind of see what curriculum was out there .

And I stumbled across a podcast of someone who was coaching also , she was doing life coaching and what have you . And one day she promoted an opportunity to coach women to do podcasting And I was like , oh my God , i'm going to go ahead and do this podcasting . So that same woman also was getting ready to launch her first book And through her .

So I went all the way . I drove all the way to Fort Worth . I didn't know this woman . I had just met her , she had been coaching me . You know , i just took a leap of faith , drove all the way to Fort Worth , which for me was like a four to five hour drive , and we got to talking .

I was at her book launch , so I kind of got a feel to what was to be expected and what have you . And then a few months later she says , you know , we became friends . And she was like you know what , mariana , why don't you start , why don't you write your own book ? And I'm like , girl , i don't know how to do that . What am I supposed to do ?

Like that was always something that was in the back of my mind . And then , lo and behold , she says , well , i can get you connected with the person that helped me . And next thing , you know , we look and it's like internship opportunity . And she goes , hey , mariana , jump on this . And I was like , okay .

So that's when I went ahead and reached out to you And let me tell y'all , y'all , it has been such a wonderful journey just to get connected with you .

Janine , i just want to say thank you so much because you know , for anyone that's out there listening to us right now , you know you would think that just because we start something , we do something or what have you ? it's not like we're by ourselves doing this .

Even coaches need coaches , right , because we only know what we know , and so , like a podcast coach to help me with my podcast , and now a coach for you know book publishing to teach us . And that's what I love about the book publishing Academy , janine , is that it just has a little bit of everything that we need .

We have the Facebook groups that offer words of encouragement . You're one of ones that we get to have with you . We also , you know , on WhatsApp .

We have another group chat on there , and it's just such an incredible thing that and I don't even know if you yourself had envisioned that it would be this thing right now because we don't even feel like we're competing against each other .

We feel genuinely like a family , like we really know each other , and that speaks volumes for you as the founder , as the creator of the book publishing Academy , that connection that we all have with one another , where we're wanting to encourage you .

So I just want to say , janine , thank you so much for taking that leap of faith for the book publishing Academy . Is that something that you had even envisioned Like ? did you even have that in your mind that you would have such a great group like that ?

Speaker 2

So I'll be honest with you , when I first started , there wasn't I wouldn't say there was a great group . It was very disconnected . It didn't feel like a family or like a community . And I would get really sad , to be honest with you , because that's what I wanted .

And so I started to read lots of books about how to grow a team , how to build a community , how to foster a culture within an organization , and I just started to implement some of those things And I also think that just by me putting the intention out there , it kind of just became it .

So thank God , because at the beginning it wasn't like that And I would , i would yearn for it , i like I wanted a community feeling and it just wasn't happening .

So it took time to build what we have now And I love it because everyone is vulnerable in our chats and they're open And I feel like it's a community where if someone's having a rough time , you can hop in the chat and anyone will drop what they're doing to help someone in that team . You know what I mean .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it is , it's no , I have to agree with you . It's really really cool . And then also , what I love is that , you know , we all have different styles of writing And at the same time , we all connect it with . We all connect with one another , right ?

And then some of us have similarities on the topics we're writing , but the way they write out their own personal stories are so completely like , different , you know , and I love that , because even us , amongst each other , we're out promoting one another and we're advertising one another's books And , not to mention , we're also even purchasing each other's books and

reading it , like I've already read your book , One of your books . I think it's the . What is it ?

Speaker 2

I don't want to mess up the title , the light and times of darkness .

Speaker 1

Yes , the light and times of darkness .

Oh my God , when I was reading that book I was like , oh my gosh , yes , yes , i was going through something like that when it , you know , when you were hitting hard about narcissism and the type of relationship you were in , because , you know , i've shared with you and you even were my editor , so you even got to read my book before anyone else got to read

it , and where we share , like there's similarities . We may not have lived the same exact life , but we've had those similarities of living with a person who , in a way , well , who , not in a way who is abusive , but to understand their mentality and then how it makes us feel And it's just to see us today like go through those things .

And then see us today And here we are now launching out into our businesses and stuff . I mean like that's pretty badass .

Speaker 2

No , it is , And it resonated with me a lot . It resonated with me a lot .

Speaker 1

I know I think you mentioned that it was the chapter of letting go . I think that was the one that you mentioned , that really you resonated with and stuff And I was like , and that's pretty cool to know that we can , even with our own , but with each other's books we're still learning something , right ?

Yeah there's still lessons that we're both , we're all learning within each other And it's so . you know , it's such an amazing thing and stuff . And so you're also a single mom , Yes , Making all of these things happen . And so what would you say for someone who wants to do something , start something . they're afraid to do it .

What would you say to that person ?

Speaker 2

Do it anyways . That's my favorite thing to say is like , yeah , do it anyways . Who cares that ? you have the fear , like all of us have fear . The fear is going to be here today , is going to be here tomorrow , so pick and choose what day do you want to overcome it ? One thing , so I love telling this story .

I had dinner with Robert Kiyosaki He's the author of Rich Dad , poor Dad . He had us go around the table and tell him what our self-limiting belief is around money , and mine was well . My parents never taught me about money They never .

I didn't grow up learning about financial literacy And he looked at me at dinner and he said so , how much longer are you going to have that problem ? And that hurt .

It hurt in the right way , and so sometimes you need someone like a Robert Kiyosaki that's going to call you out on your BS And I have become really good at that too of , like people , we make excuses all the time And so I love saying , well , how much longer are you going to have that problem ?

And OK , you have fears , so do it anyways , like if we really have to .

It's a mindset thing , and for me , as far as fear one of my biggest fears , to be transparent , is that I'm going to be on my deaf bed wishing that I would have done X , y and Z , like really imagine yourself being on that deaf bed and thinking , oh my god , i only have like five minutes to live , but I never went skydiving And I never wrote that book

And I never went for that hike in Yosemite . Imagine you're on those last five minutes of breaths and you're thinking all these things of like I did not do what I was supposed to do on this earth . So that's why I say do it regardless of the fear And overcome the , get over the excuses , just get over it .

Speaker 1

Get over it . No , and one of the modules . What I love is that you have a section on there where it's promoting the book a million dollar day And that's going out , and so , in case no one knows what that means , it's actually a book , right ? A book written by Mark Culverson Mark Culverson , and it's basically What ?

any if , like , you're procrastinating or whatever , you're putting issues on the back burner or something like that and you wanna Organize your .

Speaker 2

So what he talks about is how we take up space in our mind like we'll say , okay , i wanna publish this book , but in the back of our mind we have this long list of to-dos , like I gotta go , you know , change the car tires . I gotta clean the , you know , the office out and the attic .

I have to paint the walls and my you know , we have these long list of things to do . Right now , my windshield wiper needs to be changed . So that's like in my head , right , right too . Yeah . So what he says is have a million dollar day . And so he wants you to sit down and literally write down everything that you have to do .

And I'm not talking about small things like , okay , i need to post this graphic and I need to go to the CVS to pick up my medicine . It's like those big things too , of like I need to clean out the attic , i need to go get tires , my windshield wiper , whatever oil changes , and he wants you to do it in 24 hours .

And also the premise is adding up how long have you had that problem ? So like , for me , my tires I think it's been like two weeks , and then my windshield wiper like a week , but I've been needing to clean my storage for like a year . So he's like all of that is years and time and hours .

That is clogging your mind and holding you back from doing what you're supposed to be doing , and you'd be surprised that once you do the million dollar day , you feel so much better . You're like okay , i literally have nothing on my to-do list And the only thing I can do is write this book .

Speaker 1

And I will say that I did do that .

I did take advantage of that And I was able to finish my book on my deadline , because I gave myself a deadline , like I told you , when I wanted to finish my book , and I think I pushed it back once , but I knew that I had this goal because I'm going on the speaking engagement on July 14th in Fort Worth And I was like , no , i've got to have my book

out , because I really want to have it for that event , even though that's not my official launch date . But it is the day that I get to sell my book over there with a different audience . Here it's going to be with family and friends and whatnot .

But and I'll tell you all that , it really did make me realize the things that I have been putting on the back burner . That it does . It clutters your mind because you're not thinking or concentrating on what you really want to focus on , because you've got this thing in the back of your mind continuous .

It's like someone continuously poking you in the head and you're like , oh my God , but it stopped . But unless you do something , it won't stop . And so I really , like I said , i really enjoyed the modules and stuff .

And so for anyone who would like to partake or are interested in this journey of writing their book and , you know , in joining the book publishing academy , what would be a good way for them to get started ? How would you recommend they get started ?

Speaker 2

So I always say the first step is making a decision , because what you don't want is to say , yeah , i want to write a book , but then you're sitting there saying I want to write a book for 510 years , right ? So I always tell people the very first step is make a decision and decide I'm going to write this book or I'm not going to write this book .

Don't do the middle . The middle , you know the gray area . Once you've made a decision that you want to write a book , if you are listening , you can always reach out to my Diana and she'll get you connected to us .

And really it's just being ready ready for someone to coach you , ready for a community of authors that are going to uplift you , ready to do the work , because we will hold you accountable and make sure that you get it done .

So it's really just you can come with the fears , but you got to leave the excuses at the door , so um yes , y'all , because I've been told that too .

Speaker 1

So how's the book coming along ?

Speaker 2

and you're like let me ignore that text .

Speaker 1

I don't want to answer you right now . So no , it is true , but that's you know , and it goes to show that it's not just with this specifically either . I mean , that's with anything that I think if you're wanting to decide to do something , you know it's , you can always talk about it .

But until you're about it , like it's be about it , don't just talk about it Until you start taking that action . You know you're always just going to sit on it And then it's always going to be that what if , that , what if , that , what if ? and I didn't want that anymore . I didn't want that What if ?

and that's why I took that leap of faith and said you know what I've talked about wanting to . You know , people have always said because they planted those seeds in me even years ago about writing a book , because anytime I would share my personal testimony , i would share my story of what I had to go through and what I lived through .

It's not easy , it's not easy . And then , when you start , it's one thing when you're talking to a person or a group of people , but now , when you're sharing it in a book , it's it's . It's a completely different thing . And I know that I was reading one of our other author's book and I got her book .

Yes , and it's such a great book , oh , she wrote it so beautifully . But even though even she talks about that too , you know that she had that fear , right , that she had that fear of putting herself out there being vulnerable , and I think that's for a lot of us .

I mean , we all have that fear where we live and and are afraid what other people are going to think , and we have to let go of that , because it doesn't . At the end of the day , it's not going to even matter what other people think . Yeah , and that was something that I remember . I mean , i've learned that lesson too .

But it was also a reminder that in our group has always been mentioned . You know , it's like who cares ? just do it , just do it .

You know we're here , we're here to support you And of course , there's gonna be people that are not gonna agree with you , but at the end of the day , it's not for them , it's for you and it's for someone else who may need to hear that story . So I'm like so grateful and thankful , janine , that you were able to take some time with me today .

I know we had been scheduling and rescheduling . We're both very , very busy . So Liz and Janine and I had just partnered when we did her third year what annual Academy Book Publishing Academy event , and it was virtual and y'all we are considering in person maybe . So , if y'all wanna , we're speaking that into existence And I'm excited .

I'm excited too , so that's gonna be enough . So I've already got my feet wet with doing mine in person and it's been truly , truly , truly exciting y'all .

But from time to time you will see posts and I will be sharing posts because there's opportunities where Janine does provide internship opportunities And if that's something that's of interest to you , i would say listen , just reach out . Even if it's just to gain some insight or information , reach out to Janine . And so , janine , how can they find you ?

Speaker 2

So I actually am looking for interns . So if anyone is interested , do actually have one opening available . And the best way to reach me is honestly . if you wanna just chat and get get acquainted with the Book Publishing Academy , it would be Instagram . it's at Janine Hernandez , underscore , or at Book Publishing Academy .

You can also email us info at janinehernandezcom . Yeah , just send a DM , that's like the quickest . I'm always on Instagram , but also , if you're on Instagram , you could click the link in the bio or you can schedule a call there we could chat more .

Speaker 1

All right . So any words of wisdom you would like to share to all these mojethas that are listening today ?

Speaker 2

You , you know what . So one thing that I've been telling myself recently that I would love to share with you , ladies , is I say this to myself so you can practice with yourself , as I am already a millionaire , I'm just waiting for God to sign the check , Amen . So , speaking it into existence and feeling it in your body of like you already are it .

Whatever it is that you want to become or do or accomplish , it's already in , it's in the works . Okay , God is working on it .

Speaker 1

So , absolutely , absolutely . That's very , very good advice , and I'm gonna even say that to myself now . Well , listen , everyone . I wanna just say thank you so much for tuning in to this episode of Mommy on a Mission .
