The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24/7.
According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (https://save.org/about-suicide/suicide-facts/),
- Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages.
- Suicide takes the lives of over 48,500 Americans every year.
- Depression affects 20-25% of Americans ages 18+.
- Only ½ of all Americans experiencing an episode of major depression receive treatment.
- 80-90% of people that seek treatment for depression are treated successfully using therapy and/or medication.
- Women are more likely than men to have had suicidal thoughts.
- Women experience depression at roughly twice the rate of men.
- Women attempt suicide 3x as often as men.
- Suicide rates for women are highest among those aged 45-54.
