雁门关是明代内长城的外三关之一。自汉代至明末，这里一直是中原王朝和北方草原民族拉锯对峙的战略要地。雁门关附近遗迹众多。关内两座名城——崞县（今天原平崞阳镇）和代县亦留下许多历史古建筑供访古者们参观凭吊。
