Episode description

California dreamer Demi Lovato joins the long list of people who don’t conform to the recovery narrative. Only she’s up front about it.

Demi Lovato’s intense substance-use history almost killed her. But Lovato is different: she recognizes that what almost killed her was the recovery narrative: “You’re doomed as an addict from birth; you can stave off destruction with absolute abstinence for as long as you can (in Lovato’s case six years); then we can’t help you. (And, by the way, you proved us right that you were doomed—sorry🙃).”

Lovato’s recovery narrative: “I had poor control over my life as a young artist, including eating, substance use, finances, what have you. Who knows how to handle all that when you’re 20? But after nearly dying, I put the Lovato package together in a new form. I drink and smoke pot, which I can handle. I decide on my diet. And I make my own financial decisions. It’s called ‘controlling you life’. I don’t want to tell other people what to do. But I think more people could benefit from my approach.”
