Episode description

Emma and Tennille talk to director of ZeroRisk, Tony Loughran about survival skills for the snow. With Tony's background as an ex-Commando Medic and extensive experience in Arctic remote conditions, Tony shares tips for a range of accidents and injuries that can occur. This applies to inbounds (in snow resorts) as well as out of bounds (outside resort gates in side country and in back country). We discuss chairlift accidents, becoming separated from mates or family in a group and how to manage injury to ankle, knee, shoulders and head. How to shelter, feed yourself and keep yourself warm if alone for extended periods of time in inclement weather or white outs. What should be in the all important backpack. Tony's first book 'Zero Risk' is published August 2023 and looks at his life and events leading up to becoming a Commando Medic, the incidents and investigations he was involved in as Head of Security for BBC and what this choice of life and career has cost him in his personal life. When searching for Avalanche courses please head to Avalanche Australia and the Mountain Safety Collective for additional resources for snow safety and education.
