Episode description

In 1976 while Minister for Defence, Paddy Donegan called then Irish President Cearbhall O'Dalaigh “a thundering disgrace”. His remarks precipitated the most serious constitutional crisis in the history of the State which led to O'Dalaigh's resignation within days. Though history will always associate Paddy with the controversy there was so much more to the man from Monasterboice. He was a dynamic individual who achieved so much personally, politically and in the world of business. In the course of the story of his life family, friends, political and business associates paint a picture of a man who gave so much of himself to making the lives of others, his community, constituency and country better. Far from a Thundering Disgrace is produced and presented by Gerry Kelly and is supported by the BAI Sound & Vision Fund.
