Episode description

Have you ever thought to yourself :"If only I had more willpower and self-control with food, then I could stop binge eating"?

Of course we feel that way. It simply takes a quick Google search to get back 10000+ results of articles touting ways to “increase your willpower with food”.

You've likely be told that once you've found a diet that makes you feel good physically and mentally, it is just a matter of staying on track. This takes willpower.

This is where we have it all wrong.

Now, in our defense, we live in a culture that idolizes “self-control” and makes us believe that we’re expected to:

  • Eliminate all processed foods
  • Practice regimented “healthy” eating, only eating “clean”, “whole” or “pure” foods
  • Workout every day
  • Never eat after 8 pm
  • Wake up at 5 am and have the perfect morning routine

The list goes on.

It’s no wonder we feel a deep sense of shame and guilt when we feel we aren’t adhering to the unrealistic expectations placed upon us.

With all of that messaging, this might just come as a surprise to you: willpower is a lie.

Binge eating is not about willpower.

It’s a result of a number of factors, and we're getting into it in today's episode.
