Jesus made a very revealing statement to the leaders of his people in the first century regarding who the Sabbath was made to serve. He said the day was made to serve us believers and not the contrary, as the religious leaders so ardently thought.
Paul is not addressing tactics for reaching the public, but talking to the leaders of the Ephesian Church. He believes that this will be the last time he will see them, and is going to Jerusalem to witness to his own people at the risk of his life.
Worldly people search for items in the Bible that they can claim show that the book is full of contradictions. Careful analysis will always show that what seems like a contradiction actually reveals a deeper truth.
