Are you ready for this? Jean Merriman A one A hand effect. Boom boom boom, out go the light. This is Lights Out with Sean Merriman. Hey, what's up, guys. We're back again with the Lights Out podcast with me Seawan Merriman. And uh, this is pretty cool. Got a man shack lawson on
um got drafted one of the Buffalo Bills. Uh, and just outstand and player we get into it. But playing with Rex Ryan or playing for Rex ryans Uh, that defense over there and always that Buffalo love. Look, anytime we got anybody connects to the Buffalo Bills, you know, I'm gonna show you guys love out there very special place, not just to me but many people. UM. And you know his once to um you know, get better man to play play possibly played, but the Buffalo Bills in
that division. You know. Now he gets to go against his former team and looks like the Patriots maybe down and out for the next few years while they rebuild. So it looked like the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Um, you know for the next couple of years. He just signed a three year contract. Well worth it and looking to get paid again man, because he's a hell of a player and outstanding guy. Shack lawsuit. Well you are where are you right now? Remember Miami? Yeah? Are you
still you? Are you working out there? And they're doing all season two? Uh? Yeah, yeah, I'm doing the rehab right now, doing the rehab. I got some stuff cleaned up on my body, so I'm doing here right now what you have done. My shoulder had to get that, had to get my label cleaned up and stuff like that. So the label dog both both of mine, both of my labels. Yeah. I played three years in college with a tour label. I ain't know it was touring until I got to the team, and I think Jacksonville told
me it was torn. You know, it's crazy. I'd be telling cats all the time, man, because you know, you know, you got boys and homeboys and friends who don't play sports and they might have a little bump with a forearm or something like that, and and cats and football. You know, we're running around with half torn labraams seventy five percent to labors, and we out playing with it. We might throw in a little harness or something, but we're going back out there and playing the whole time.
Fact fact, that's why I did. That's why I ended up going. I end up getting used to playing with the hardness. So, man, I end up getting comfortable with it. So was that was that the only thing you came out with this year? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, everything else I was healthy. You know, I played all year, play it all year through it, so everything else is great. You are you working out with the team during the all season out there? You got you got your own guy? Uh yeah, I usually got my own guy. I got
my own guy. I usually work with p pe in with people Bambarrito no p p a Z. James Harrison. Oh yeah, that's right, That's that's right. I just talked to you. Talk to your boy Elvin too. I'm gonna be out easy this weekend and I'm hosting a little gig and he's gonna come through and slide through and chill with me. Okaya, I might be after this weekend. Oh yeah, let me know, let me know what. Uh so, what what's the deal? Man? You? Um you know, you
know it's funny. So we we started, we started talking. When you're playing with Buffalo still, I think that's when we first connected. And uh, you know, I tell people all the time, I said, I was scratching the screaming going to Buffalo like I did. I just didn't want to go because I was playing with the charges. And I got out there, I said, man, listen, I'm not trying to go here. But that that love though, that that Buffalo show you why you out there. It's something.
It's something completely different. Is that? Is it different from Miami and playing up there? Yeah, it's way different. Buffalo love. Man. I'm down here in Miami, and I still get love from Buffalo, you know, even though I choose the robbery to come down here. Buffalo fans I always love me. But I'm glad I started my career after somewhere cold so I can be like, I'm appreciate this and now I can't Georgiana. I mean, that was that was a great part about me starting my career at Buffalo. But man,
keep it real with you, man. I got used to it, man, I ain't up getting used to stand up there the weather and when free agency came. It was a hard decision, man, It was a hard decision to leave, UH. Even even though I knew, I knew Miami offered me more, it's still kind of hard to the league because I knew what those guys had. I mean, those guys had a great run this year, and I knew I was gonna come back and be a four time starter down and me and coach Fraser, that's that was my guy. That
was my guy. So it was just a hard decision. But you know, so I know, I mean, you got y'all made a complete one eighty from from what I was, you know a year or two ago when they wasn't playing well done there, But was you sitting back and watching them in the play a block watching Buffalo in the playoffs? Like, man, you know you wish you could either play there or wish that y'all had an opportunite.
Y'all had the squad too when you were there. It's just that they're never paying out some of them games. I've just seen me built like I came in. Man, I was one of Rex Ryan last draft pick UH Coach mcderman cupt around, so I was done when they started that the ground up and still watch them, see them progress in the playoffs. I know the last shot was part of the team went to a playoffs, but we gave up a six team part lead. And see
this year they end up winning two games. Man, you can see that team just just watching mass seeing this growth growth and and seeing they could just gonnaly get better man to compete and gets them through the divisions. It's gonna be it's gonna be a battle between us and US and and the Bills in the coming a
couple of years. Oh for sure, per cents. You know, I played with one of your one of your teammates dpted in now with this Patrick with Fitzing, and I do I got some I got some great stories, man, because I try to tell cats how how cool he is man and how like you just he one of those cashes you just like to have in a locker room man, because he's always a good time man, always
good spirits. And then it's something it's just something about you know, maybe you could explain it better, but it was something about playing with with Fitzpatrick man that always felt like this dude was exciting, He's gonna win. He might go out and went for Yeah, man, playing with Fits. You know, I played against some last couple of years, but actually been on the team within him. Man, he's
a credible guy, you know. And it's crazy part about it because you see him walking around the facility or something. You think, Man, this guy, man, you don't look like he could play football and all look like he just how he just carried something like you don't play football. But when you go out the Sunday and he's just a baller man, and Fings want us a lot of games that ship. Man, we're gonna mrs leadership, you know. Um I learned a lot from him from being down
here just this one year and things like that. But man, we're gonna miss having him around because I mean, you know Fit Fits, uh you know Phisical get you five touchdowns man and stuff like that. You know how to fix it, you know, come out there, do you want crazy crazy game? And yeah, they come back. You know what I'm Fixings man. So I mean, it's just great to play with. Man. What what they I mean? I know we saw it on TV, but I don't really know how the lationship was with with TWA. Were they
really were they really tight like that? When you know, they had to turn over down and with Tour came and stepped in and took took over the road for him. Man. Yeah, the buss are type no busserre type man being around the league, I ain't see that lot, you know. I mean, you know, how guys, is you you older guy and the rickie come in? You know the older guy don't either like the ricky. But that was the case with
fish Patrick. Man, Fitzpatrick was with two every time he helped him out, you know, congratulate him he threw it if he threw a pig or threw a bad pass or something like that. Fixed was first want to bring him up. So man takes us the first one by his corner every time. No, I said the same thing to dude, and I, um, I just running thing. I would always go by Fitzpatrick locker and grab his hair on his chest and like keep running by. And he want of them dudes. Man as just always in a
good mood. And so how does Tour of been man? Why you've been down there because you know this one. I got a chance to meet him yet in person. But um does he does he take over that road? Is he? You? Guys? Feel like confident with him walking around the locker room. Is he got his feet up on him yet? Yes? Yes, yes. And I talked to Tour outside of football, you know we we uh in
the same neighborhood and stuff like that. So, I mean I talked to two outside of football, and man, he he's a leader, man, you know, Um, he's a very competitive guy. You know, he's gonna leave this team a long way. He came in and played big for laying in the season, especially as a ricking ain't getting the O T s and none of it, uh the preseason games for him to come in underpressure and make the plays he did, man, with just incredible. Man, it's gonna be It's gonna be big for us in the upcoming
years with him as our quarterback. You know, I was watching your your team, man, and over like the course of how y'all have a big turnaround? You know, like you did? You know, because it was it was one everybody's questioning, you know, questioning the coach, and y'all come out and look like a total different team this year. Man, And I and I told you before that was gonna happen. I said that you gotta give them a second too, to get acclimated. You know, it's a lot of moving parts.
I think when when coach came, I think it was six or seven maybe more guys that left either win to you know, different teams. I know steals left and a bunch of cats left. I said, watch give give them, give them do some time, and they're gonna be a total different team. Flow about the right guys, and I mean playing against these guys last year, they played us hard. So I knew when Flow was bringing his right guys in,
and I knew I had an opportunity. Okay, Miami want me and the Buffalo, and I knew I had a part of being been a part of something that's rebuilding, and I have a chance to start, get a refresh start. And man, you know haven't I mean he's anyone. I mean her brother too. You know what I'm saying. You don't get see, but see Okay, let me ask you, because you know I don't. I don't sit there. And you know everybody's like, oh, that need to be fifteen
sixteen black head coaching. But I'm an advocate. There need to be more black coaches than that fail period. And so that's why when when be flowed the coaches out there, and I'm like, if he's winning and he making everybody look good, more people is going to have an opportunity, you know, more more black head coach will have an opportunity. And I'm glad he turned that thing around, Like does that conversation never come up with you know, with y'all
or the team. Man, I would have been around the building initial man and I said, Man, this is me being in the year league five years. I ain't never been in the building with so many black employees, black coaches and things like that. So Man, and I was telling them, and I'll be thinking, you know, you know it's a business lead you know, new coaches, you you get two years basically, get two years to prove what
you can do. So, Man, when we came out there and played this ship for flow Man and and he bought the right guys for us, like Calvin Noyd, Brian Jones, Zavia Howard, you know, the best corner of the league. So putting those guys with a great defense and stuff like that, Man, we knew we had a chance to make a run for him to be a coach and see him succeed the black, the black sed coaches. It was great. Like I seen something the other day. I think I guess it was the divisional game. They had
like folk folk coordinators, all black coaching the game. Man. I was like, man, that's something to be proud about. Man, for is he like a players coach? Y'all come in um, because you know I played with I played with coach. I've had black coaches that, you know, try to act more like the coach and don't want to be you know what, like, is he one of the players, guys, He's coming and mess with y'all and joke around with you all a little bit, or yeah, yeah, he come
junk around with you. But he's gonna keep it real too. And you're like, he ain't gonna never simple code name. Man, He's gonna keep it really. He probably want of the realist coaches. I don't play for and I and I don't play for Sweeney Rix all those guys. Man, he probably one of the realist coachesn't I don't pay for because you keep it real. Like I mean, he tell you if you ain't playing good. I mean, he'll tell you in phaise. He ain't gonna never ship coach. Say
nothing behind your back. So man, that's I told him day one, and I told him day one. We I got done even to ask me, Man, you know, you're the realist, realist in this business when it's coming to this business, because this business it's not real when it comes to stuff like that. You know. And and I you know, like I said, I'm not the one to sit around like oh man didn't have to lead me
to be black coaches. But you sit around and look at the numbers, and then you see coaches like him and other you know, coaches like Carl Well and other you know black coach who has success like man. You know, you see um Eric been to me from you know, from the Chiefs, and you see some of these coaches. I'm like, man, listen, you know, get you give these guys a shot and letting you know, give them a chance of going they win games, man, because that opportunity
ain't there. It's just it's just not And I just try to keep it all the way a hundred. You know, the opportunity is just not there man, for a lot of black head coaches. So what would he uh so, what what's his motivation for next year? Because I know he got some bulletin board material. And you know in that division, now obviously the Patriots used to run it for the last you know, decade and a half or so. And now that fact to me, the division wide open.
Where it's gonna be, you know, y'all or Buffalo. You know what I'm saying. I'm not trying to discounter Jets to what they're doing or maybe the Patres come back up. But you know, you just said it yourself, like it's you know that's gonna be war twice a year. I mean, I go, last year, we wanted to win it all. You know, you know every team goes win it all. I go, just man, we knew we was young in the NFL. I mean, your youngest team in the league.
We knew we had new guys first year in the system, Like this was my first system playing the three folk defense like that I played FO three. So he had a lot of new guys for us to win. I mean we were in ten eleven games. I mean, we just gonna really build out that. Man, We're gonna try to win it all. Man, we know we got some great drift picks coming in some free agency. You know you're gonna hit some more guys. So man, we're just trying to build in and add more to the pieces, man,
and make a run for this thing and winning. You like that three four battle the for three well, man, I mean, I mean I'm being getting used to it. I got used to it, you know. I was our three three kind of was different Like I played in uh Rex Ryan three fold when I was like truly outside linebacker. Now that that you're standing up almost on the end. Yeah, yeah, that three fold out there on number two and stuff. Yeah, that three for a little different. So I used to hate that, man, I ain't evenna
about you just hate that. My rookie ill I hated that. But no, we we had two we had two big ends though. We had two big ends that can play, you know, Me and Mayo. So we we played a lot of folks down too, So it was kind of mixed. So but it wasn't. It wasn't that like I did with Reddy And that's probably the hardest defense learning edge
defense was it's crazy, man, for real. Yeah, So I played three four my entire you know, NFL career, and then once in a while I dropped my hand in the dirt on Nickel and then when I got out to Buffalo, man, they put me in that fourth three of my hand in the dirt over a sixth technique with that with that tight end and that tackle. Dude, I'm tell you, they drove my ass off off the ball about ten yards. And I said, listen. I went
to coach. I said, y'all can never do this to me to me again, because when I was in coverage, man, I think I was in courage. It was my rookie year. I was on coverage on Antonio Brown. I gave up like a touchdown. I came to the sideline like ritz Man, y'all did not drift me first round being coverage, man, like I cannot put They put you on the island. They put you on the island out there, man. Yeah,
they put me in the whole island out there. Yeah, dope. Man. Hey, So I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you this real quick, cause I heard a couple of different sac names. I heard sack daddy before. What what which name be, like bast sack daddy or um what's the other joint? Uh the saker shot right or something like that? Sat Lawson, Yes, Zack Lawson. That's what it was. Sack Lawson? Which which one? I like that? Better? Man? Who who gave you that? Who gave me the I mean I had a guy that.
Uh they gave me that when I was when I was at Clemson, I think I think, um one of my teammates had a gameing to me and then stuck with me, and uh, every coach had said it. And then eventually somehow they started saying that when I got to the league and things like that. So, man, I need I need to get a double digit set season, man, for real, because you got you got one or two more years left on your on your deal. I know you signed with three year, right two months? I got
two more. I signed it three year. There are you? Are you hoping again hoping to stay down there? Yeah? I hoping? Yeah, Yeah, I love it. I don't want to move. I don't want to leave. I hope to stay down here, be with flowing there. Hopefully I can stay down here, re up again. I'm gonna be young when I go back. I'm gonna be twenty seven again. So oh man, you got young on you? You got
too much? Yeah, I got two months. So I'm trying to trying to do that, all right, I know you like and it's not just's not any any shade or nothing like that. It's just it's just part of the business. And I already said you and you and tour y'all cool, ain't nothing like that whatever. But I'm hearing the same I'm hearing the same thing about the Sean coming out there. And I know, y'all, I know you all played together. You know Clemson. You know what's what's what's the deal man?
What what's gonna happen? Yeah, I don't know. I'm sitting back and lots. But if we I love too. I love both of those guys, man. But if the sun comes out here and be crazy, man crazy you know you know he he all pro quarterback man. I mean playing with him in college, you know, I've seen when he got into dough his his freshman year. Man, we had a lot of scrimmage and we couldn't even talking him, couldn't get him down. That's how I knew he was gonna be the truth. I mean, he just yeah, he
he's a different playma here, playmaker man. You know the sign he led a great I mean, not a good team this year. In Houston down there and had incredible numbers without de hop too. So I mean, if we get him, I've been sitting online he want to come to money. Ami. I don't know how true it is. I'll just be saying online. I ain't heard nothing from nobody about it. I ain't asked him about it though.
I mean, I said, I mean I've seen it, sent them to him and sent the eye motion like hey man, and he was like, man, I don't know, so we don't. I mean, if we come down, it'd be crazy though that that would definitely take you all tonight. But I probably see him going to a hot market. Man. I see I'm going to a hot market. Man. Here're going somewhere in New York. Man, the market, someone with the market, because what type of player is and you know, somebody
gonna pay them. They're gonna give up the draft pigs, They're gonna pay them all that fact. You're gonna have to give a lot of them and give him forever.
All right, my dude, Hey, I appreciate I hate you. So, since we get off, thanks guys for listening to another lights Out podcast with me Seawan Merriman and uh, that was really cool for me because you know he uh had I didn't know about this relationship at a great relationship with toa uh and I asked him slat out, was was the tour relationship with Ryan Fitzpatrick also my former teammate? Was that real? He said, yeah, man, they were boys, So um, that was really good to hear.
And also possibly DeShawn Watson. You know, because Deshaun Watson b or Miami Dolphins. It's been out there. You know, they played together and Clemson, so it's definitely a big, big possibility. He thinks they're gonna go He's gonna go to a bigger market at some point, but it's also a possibility to end up with as a dolphin. So that was awesome, man. So I appreciate you guys for
listening in to another podcast. Uh these reviews, man, I tell you, I see some of these huge guys are leading these comments and joined the podcast and enjoined the guests and just keep leaving those reviews, and uh, make sure you subscribe to us and anyway you can download podcasts, and next week we'll be back with another one.
