Are you ready for this? Jean Merriman A one of hand effect. Boom boom boom, out go the light. This is Lights Out with Sean Merriman. What's up, guys, We're back with another Lights Out podcast with me Sean Merriman. And Uh, this one's gonna be fun for me today because I have
one of my favorite players to watch. And when I tell you that, the first time I've seen him at the NFL Draft. There was a picture of him in the gym in the weight room in college that went viral that when I saw it, I said, no where, There's no way in hell that this guy looks like this impertinent in person. I thought it was photoshopped. I've never seen a human being, let alone a wide receiver that was just big and ripped up and this in
shape that I just I thought it was photoshops. You couldn't tell me, you know, DK Metcalf, He's uh one of the most exciting young players in the National Football League, not just wide receivers, I mean of all players and uh just just hell of a player to watch, you know, a hell of a competitor. Um you know, came to an organization and got a chance to compete early on. So this is gonna be fun for me. One of my favorite guys to watch the NFL DK Metcalf young fella.
Uh my dog? What up? What up with you? How you've been man? I've been good, dude. How are you doing all right? Yes, sir, I'm doing real good, doing all right? What you had that call with your agent? Please tell me they about to cut you a new check somewhere? No know, my marketing market agent. I just seen that. So you just signed with CIA right now? But my marketings with w me oh wm me correct? So what what side? What side did you sign with? C A? Was it on the football side or the
it was on football side? Yes, sir? Who who do you? Who do you sign with over there? Okay? Yeah? I was with uh, I was with Tom Condon man for a while. Yeah you know Tom, Tom gonna get you that bread now exactly already know they all worked together, Yeah, I know him, all the guys over there. So what what on the marketing side. You know it's crazy because um, you know when I came into the league, man, like you know, I had the whole lights out thing and
I wanted to do TV. What like prompted you too, like really lean on that marketing side, get a marketing AGC. You've got some stuff do you want to do coming up? Yes, sir. Um. What really pumped me was just getting my name out there. Um, because I know, I mean a lot of people I'm I feel like I'm different, um, and I just you know, like to show how different I am. So I think
I got a pretty pretty cool personality. Uh that people can uh you know that people like so just putting that out there and showing that the different brands and just just show them not just a football player. I can I can work, um, you know in Hollywood one day or uh you know, be behind the camera. Um. And I'm not you know, smarter than him with bigger than the show the past basically right now. You know what that's important to because um, you know, I tell a lot of cats and I was doing TV while
I played too. Um back way back before your time, I was doing like Mad TV. I was on the I did the episode Entourage, uh, the Mendy Project, which is a big show at the time on Fox, and so I was doing a bunch of stuff and I think that sometimes, like like, as football players, obviously that's number one, that's your job and that's what you're gonna do, but you have to start to prepare to kind of at some point have something away from the game, like I was. I was always a woman like I wasn't.
I can't go work out, play football practice and go home like that just that could be my day. So what what? What? What is your plans matter? You want to get more into uh like the film side is in music or you know what? I really want my hand in every pod everybody. Um yeah, I got a few songs out on Apple Music. Hold on, hold on, hold on what ye what you You never promoted that, I've never seen it. I mean yeah, it was kind
of during the season. So I didn't want, you know, everybody to say, oh, he's not focused on football or not focused during the season. But I mean that was just that's something that gets me away from football. Um. You know is music? Um so um. I featured on two songs with my guy uh from Seattle. His name is Kinko. He's been rapping for a minute. So, um, I trained with him during quarantine and found out that he was a rapper, and I was like, oh man,
I'm trying to trying to do the same thing. So we just kind of linked in uh in the studio and and made two songs um uh emmett till I'm trying to uh you know, get my hand in the documentary that he's going in as well. So that I want to ask you about because I see a lot of that posting on your stories and you're always talking about it and some of the injustices that were done. Then, Um, what what made you like kind of be a step
on the forefront? Um being from Mississippi and uh you know he got killed in Mississippi and just showing people that uh, you know, this is George Floyd is nothing new in my eyes, Um, this has been going on for fifty sixty years plus. Um, So just opening up people's eyes that this is not you know, a new event, it's a reoccurring event. Um. And just educating people on black history and you know something that gets pushed under the rug sometimes it's in matil. So just you know,
sharing this story. Do you ever get any pushed back, like the people be up in the d m s and saying stuff to you because of of of some of the things you're posting on the h No, not really. I really get a lot of positive, positive things like I didn't know this, please keep sharing, um you know his information, I didn't know his story, didn't know who he was. So I mean, I've I've been getting a lot of you know, positive feedback. And how far you say,
you're talking about the documentary? What's uh what what's what's gonna happen with that? Uh? They're making a document mtel documentary movie um right now and uh, you know, just trying to trying to uh you know, promote that or or get my hand in the pot. And that's some some way shape for them fast. Okay, so you're stepping out, are you getting some uh producer directed credits? And you
know what we're talking? I don't know that. I can't I can't say nothing right now, but it's it's it's gonna be something on the loans of those lines that that's cool man, because I always seen you and I take it back to when you got drafted and now I'll take it back because I watched you playing college, but I really I didn't know because everybody looked big with padgs on, like everybody look you know, like I
do big, Man do big. But I've seen you at the at the draft for the first time, and you're the first time I looked at you, your back was turned. I was like, man, that's a d n over there. That's the first event. And I didn't know because I didn't see your face. And so that was like the first time I was like, man, and this dude is a is a freakish player. When I called my late I was like in Layton High School, when did when
did all that start coming around? You start getting serious about the ways you started to getting serious about you know, your side, strength and all that. Right, I tell people all the time, like a couple of days ago, that was like you've always been big. I was my freshman yeards five eleven five my freshman year of college. Hold on you and what in high school? I was five
eleven five eighty five. I was that crazy um freshman year of college, I was six feet six one, two hundred pounds, and so I broke my foot in my freshman year of college, the third game of season, and so after that, I was in the weight room training twice a day, um, just in the morning and the afternoon while they were at practice. Um. It was it was a string coast that I was. I was real close with, real cool with. UM. You know, he put me in the weight room. I used to talk ship
uh to him. Um. You know, just me in there by myself, UM, just putting in the work. Um. And next thing you know, I look up on two twenty six three, hit a little gross fur um and the rest is history. I ain't looked back. So yeah, so when you got when you got drafted, and I always I always try to figure this out, man like. And I know that these scouts that got a job to do and on some of the other ship or whatever. But I'm like, how in the hell did you pack
that many teams pass up on it? Dude? Like that That's what I started go through my heads. Do you ever? Of course you don't think about as much now, but at some point, is I feel you that they did at one point? Yeah? It always, um, because I mean I look up and it's sixty three players that people think are better than me. Um. So I mean I just got to go out there and just you know, continue to just believe in myself and put in the working. Um you know not, I don't. I don't believe in
showing people. I believe in just you know, doing me and people gonna see for themselves. Uh you know why they should have passed with. So you start out, you start off fast. I mean you're already on the map. It is earlier in your career. And one thing I noticed now my my rookie year when I went to the Pro Bowl and you know have all Pro and accolades and defensive Rookie and all this other stuff, Like
I really really got on the map. So at that point, teams was at at a kind of targeting, right they came to the game and instead of them just knowing about the game planning, uh you know the game planning. So have you what have you seen from the start of people just you know, seeing your the crazy pictures that went viral where you stand in a way, because when I seen that, I was like, somebody photoshop this ship. When I seen it, I said, this is one photoshop.
Ain't no way. You know why receiving that big how has it changed from you kind of being on the map and what some people knowing about you now the game planning for you, right. I mean it's crazy because I used to think that in my rookie year. Um. So we're playing the forty niners and um, I obviously walk into the room, was like you gotta you know, you know they hit the key players. You know who
their time players are. Um and Nick Boson, who was another rookie that was like this kid specially, it's gonna be special. So I'm thinking in my mind, like the forty nine game playing against me, Like are they saying I gotta watch out for DK? You gotta watch out for DK. So that just made me work even harder because it's I'm I'm in my mind. I'm always trying to find something to doubt my cell phone so I
can work even harder just to prove some people wrong. Um. So I mean I just went back to work, went back to studying film. Um. And now that people are rolling the safety to my side, are going too high to take care of me and Tyler to make us run the ball. I mean, it's crazy, but you know you always gotta find a way to defeat it. I don't care if two people going me still throw still throw the ball up. I still want to go get it.
What's gonna happen now at this point? And then I kind of just watched kind of how you came into the league and where you at now with it, Um, and it's it's funny. I don't even tell you this. It was a cornerback who just told like a three or four minute story about how y'all was going on. It was it? Who was it was? I know he played for Yeah, yeah, yeah, And so did that really happen when y'all were going back and forth like that? Because he said something, dude, he said some ship that
I was laughing my ass off. I was dying because I told the truth with everything that he said that that's really how it went down. So you were talking back to him like that too, Yeah, because UM, tell me what happened? All right? So before the game, you know how both teams on the field warming up, right, So we went in before them, Um and the receivers we just walked back. Everybody else jog. Then we're just
walking back, you know, just talking. Um and Brandon Graham actually looked to the receivers and it was like, yeah, we're about to lock y'all, Dawn, We're about to lock y'all. Just talking ship. So I'm thinking like, all right, and so I've seen darre you slay behind him laughing, so I'm thinking like, all right, so you having it your home with egging on. So um. I was like, all right, yeah, I got you. I got your number. So m the
first player of the game. I blocked him mar I was like shoving him and he was like, damn, Like what's up? I said, now your homebody got you? Let up Brandy Graham. And so from that point on he was like, oh no, I ain't a little boy. I was like, all right, I will show you a little boy. And then that's when we got chippy. And from that point, oh, I was just I was just in his I was mad.
The reason why I love that because you know, obviously playing the defense out of the ball, you get you get some of these cats like yourself man, almost of the sense like a defensive guy mentality. You know, you're not for this out there. So when you're all going back and forth, and he told that stories, I didn't know if he was if he was, you know, putting hands on two. I didn't know if he was kind of hyping it up or did that really happen? Uh? He was. That's that's really I have. He did not
lie about nothing in that story. Y'all cool? Did y'all were talking after that? Y'all cool now? Because our safety Qundred Digs used to play with him in Detroit. They played with each other for like five years. Um, so yeah we were cool. Um. But on the field, like it's business. Yeah. So I know Pete Carroll always get behind like his guy like Marshawn and anybody, like when
they had the whole legion of a boom there. He's always behind personalities and like kind of let you guys be who you are if y'all had that relationship so far. That's one thing I love about Pete man, he just from day one, he just let me be me like I'm I'm I'm not going to back down from nothing. Uh. First day of training camp, a dB, I mean a linebacker was talking stuff to me and so I got up in his face. I was like, don't don't ever talk to me like that. MC grown as man and
then you know, we got into a little scuffle. But from that point on, like I had to set the tone like I'm not I'm not here to play. I'm not about to act like no rookie. I'm a I'm a grown man, like I said, so y'all better treat me like one, right. And that's one thing I always loved about Pete because you know, everybody come in and I and I look back on the game now because
Maye is I'm Maya is old. I'm done. But I look at the personalities and the cast that was in there, and you got some dudes just like from this place or some guys from that place. But man, it's when you got that many personalities and then the coach and the organization is letting you be who you are. That's how you win a lot of football games. Man, it's easy to go to work every day. How does that
work with Rus? Because Russ is and I used this example and even though Philip Rivers was like he never cursed and all that other stuff, but he was always the good guy. And Russ always comes across as like Mr clean, I don't do anything. And you know, is he like that all the time too, or just like that when the cameras come on. So what you see is what you get. I'm telling you from game day always to Monday and prep meetings uh to tuesdays and the players mean he's he's real about his business and
very motivational. Um, that's that's that's just Russ. What was your what was your first impression? Like when you came in and y'all met man, which is y'all kind of click early on. Um, we're both in a lot by ourselves, and he told me to come over and sit beside of me. He was like, Um, he told me, if you want to be great, you can't take everybody with you. Everybody's not gonna be on have the same mindset as you. Everybody's not gonna be on the same grind as you.
You gotta separate yourself daily. And from that point on I had to show him like, I'm I'm trying to be in the Hall of Fame one day. I'm trying to help you achieve your goals, and you gotta help me achieve mind So let's go together. He he, Um, I mean obviously playing against me, I know the competitor and stuff. He is not. When I sit back and I see some of the things that said now, like to even me. This is me. This is my opinion. I don't you know care what everybody said, ever read
or whatever. When you're talking about him possibly going to another team because there's been talking to him, possibly go watch another team, I'm like, man, y'all know what how much this dude has done? You get what I mean, like what he's built in that organization. How when you saw that that same stuff? Man, what did you feel
about it? Um? I mean I in my mind, I'd never get in another man's business, right, So yeah, so I just took a step back, and you know whatever they got going, uh, you know, they got going with the talks inside the organization between him. Uh, he's still my brother, still talked to him about his day to to today. But yeah, I mean that's between now. I stay out there that stuff. No, I I gotta you know you've been uh that that politic right now too.
I feel I feel you ll uh no no. But for me, uh, you guys have opportunity, right, I mean being up there in that division. Um, you know obviously now you know Matthew Matthew Stafford is so you know, and me me personally, how I look at it. Always thought that Matthew Staff was underrated. You get what I'm saying. It was just watching him and now being in you guys conference that's already stacked. I mean you got Kylin Murray, you got, now you got Matthew Staff. You know now
you know Russell Wilson you gotta deal with. So you know when whoever's going to be the quarterback for the forty nine is you guys? Man? In that division, it's it's a competition week and a week out, right, Um, yeah, that's it. I think it's the best division in football right now. Um. I mean you got the fort defensive line, Ramsey defensive line, and you got Jalen Ramsey and then you got the Cardinals defense, and plus they're explosive offense. I don't see a better a more stagnivision, uh you
know than outs, No, for sure. And then that's one of those things you gotta it's really no week off because I remember when I was playing and I see the Raiders on this Raider. This was before Raiders was good. I was like, Okay, there's two sacks and be I'm gonna get one here. Because you know, you always you always have a couple of games were either get no sacks. You know you don't you don't score no touchdown, but you're gonna, you know that two or three score touchdown coming.
So when I used to see the Raiders, I'm like, okay, yeah, let me. I'm just gonna get two made three sacks and catch back up and so but honestly, man, that you got in your division, that's not the case. You you practically got a dog fight week and a week out. Eight games is gonna be competition again, down to the wire, hands down. You canna always have somebody right there in your face, whether it's somebody pressing the quarterback or you know, I got to get off a jam, or you know,
it's gonna be a high school and game. So I mean it's it's a it's a tough de gas, and I mean that's what I like. I like a competition. So what what's next for you, man? Because I mean a lot of people always say the whole sky's the limit ship or whatever, but to be quite honest, man, the sky is really the limit for you. And I was looking at your post and maybe it was a day a couple of days ago you're talking about I ain't made a hunter meal yet is there is there
like something you got set in your mind. Like for me, I wanted a certain amount of sacks. I wanted to, um, you'll be looked at as the best in my position or whatever that case is, or you know, and I wanted that big I got injured, but you know I wanted that big deal. Also, what's what's next? Man in and your you know journey? Uh be my number from
last year? Um. I know after the Philly game, I talked to Calvin Calvin Johnson, um because there was some comments made in the game about I don't want to be compared to Calvin Calvini's Calvin. I'm I'm detay, but um, I just had to talk to him me like, you know, I ain't come off like that. I look up to you, but I want to be the long person. And uh he was like, I want you to go break my record and so just so he said that, Yeah, he
said that, Like he was like, uh, you know you're competitive. Um, you know I think you can break my record, So go breaking um and you know that's my name's goal is breaking his record. There it is, dude, there it is so well, Hey, what working people download that the music. As soon as we get off, I'm going right on there because I want to hear um if if it's some if it's some trash too, you know, I'm gonna hit you up like y'all you ain't putting out on
the track. But y'all can download it on album music, Spotify, mees on some all platforms, yeah, one of these all seasons. Man, I don't I don't know if you because you I think you talked about fighting before, right, yeah, I about little bit less. So what what made what made you pick that up? Uh? Just some new man, new cardio.
I always tell a lot of dudes, man. And I started like during the after my first year in the all season, I was boxing first, and then I started doing a little more tied and I started doing a little m m A pumbling and rolling on the ground. And for one, it's a different training for your body because we get tired of doing the same ship. I mean we really do. We get tired of the same you know, same cone drills, the same ladder drills, the same you know all that. So for me, I just
found it a way too. For one, because the ain't no cardio like that. You get that cardio. You can go four or five three or four minute rounds. That cardio is something different. But also to man with your with your hand eye coordination, you know, getting you know, those those cornerbacks is coming up and trying to jam you off a coverage. Watch how fast your hands end up becoming you know, and being able to catch your hand because you're looking at quick jabs all the time
and now you're just reacting. So I try to encourage all dudes man pick up some up to do in the off season, even if it's just hitting mits. But you know, if you ever want some real smoke, you know I can come up there. You know, you're only a quick fight away, so whenever you're ready, Hey, I'm in right now. Hey my dog man appreciate you dude, that's no problem. Thanks guys for listening in to another lights Out podcast with me Shawn Merriman. Uh wow, you
know it's always fun um to talk to guys. Not only did you love to watch now today's game? Obviously I've been retired for some years now, but get a chance to watch guys that can transcend the game, transcending football game and the way we look at wide receiver and then some of these freakish athletes from here on four. You know, I've seen him at the NFL Draft. He told me that I was just one of his favorite
players to watch growing up. And immediately I was like, man, that is really cool, and I was excit and I'm like, man, that's cool. This guy is gonna be a big time player one day. I was his favorite player to watch. I took about ten steps away and I said, damn, I'm old. So I was the guys that the watch you growing up, and now they're telling you. You know, while I was at the NFL Draft there was favorite players. Anyway,
it was a cool moment for me. Uh kind of shows you where his mindset is the way he plays the game. So I appreciate it. Thank you guys for listening in Um, there's another lights Out podcast me Sean Merriman. Don't forget to keep subscribing, keep leaving those great reviews.
