Day 2: Gratitude for God's Mercy
"The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love."
Psalm 103:8
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace, you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus."
Ephesians 2:4-7
"Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
Hebrews 4:14-16
Devotional
These passages remind us of the awe-inspiring reality of our God’s mercy towards us.
Though we were dead in our sins, He not only sent Jesus to take the penalty we deserved, but also resurrected us to new life through Christ.
Though our sins may be many, God’s mercy is greater.
Not because of anything we have done, but because of God’s unfailing love on display through Christ, we are encouraged to confidently draw near to God’s throne of grace.
We are invited by the Perfect Judge Himself, our gracious Great High Priest, that we may receive His mercy and find the grace we need for every challenge.
Men of God
To better grasp the weightiness of God’s mercy, we must accept that the “wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord'' (Rom. 6:23).
This mercy is a gift that cost Jesus His life.
Our Great High Priest took on the same flesh we have, endured immeasurable suffering, and shed His sinless blood in our place.
Because of our Father’s mercy, proven through Christ’s sacrifice, we have direct access to God's throne—anytime, anywhere.
The evidence in God’s Word and in our lives testifies that our God truly is rich in mercy and patience, full of compassion and kindness, abounding in grace and steadfast love.
So, we can find comfort in the assurance that He not only understands our weaknesses, but also extends His mercy and grace to sustain us as He promised.
He who promised is faithful.
Application
Today, take a moment to appreciate the depth of God’s mercy toward you. Remember what it cost Him. Give thanks as you contemplate who God was, is, and will be: “merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (Ps. 103:8).
Consider God’s grace to extend compassion and forgiveness to you. He has never given up on you. So, step forward in faith as one who has been shown mercy and given new life in Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit, be merciful to others like God has been merciful to you.
As you face challenges or moments of weakness, turn to the Lord in prayer. Thanks to Jesus, you can approach God's throne of grace with confidence, knowing that He is the One who invites you to come into His holy presence. In times of need, abundance, or anywhere in between, seek the Lord and trust in His promises.
Prayer
Merciful Father,
Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus. You saved me from the penalty of my sins and raised me to new life in Him. Thank You.
I place my trust in Jesus, the Son of God, my High Priest and interceding Advocate. Thank You for Your great love for me, for welcoming me as a son.
Because of Christ, I come before You, LORD. You really are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Help me to grasp the reality of Your mercy, that I may cherish it and show mercy to others who surely need it as much as I do.
You understand my weaknesses and struggles better than any other, Lord. Help me to believe that Your grace is sufficient and Your power is most evident in my weakness.
Thank You for the gift of Your abiding Holy Spirit, my Helper in all things. Grant me the mercy and grace I need to walk in Your ways, steadfast in faith.
In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
