I'm Honey German. My parents are Dominican. I was born and raised in New York City. I love sneakers and I'm a body positive advocate. I'm Carolina Bermudez, but i was born and raised in Ohio. I'm a wife, a mama, and a worker. Bee. This is life in spanglish, Honey. That direct deposit hit, and I'm gonna let you know it is very slim. It is not enough for me anymore. Who are you telling? Girl? First of all, I lose half my bread in Texas, so yes, I'm already in

the red the day I get paid. It is so absurd. And I know, and this is something that I told, honey that I really wanted to discuss because, no matter what, I know, so many people who are trying to cut back on expenses. They are trying to trim that wallet a little bit. They're trying to figure out ways to like make their money last longer. Because when I tell you, I was in the city the other day and I had to go to Sweet Green. Do you know what sweet Green is? Yeah, the salad shop and ill It's

like you know what, I very rarely. I always always bring food from home. Whenever I come into the city because for this very reason, and I'm going to explain it to you. So I said, forget it, I'm just going to go to Sweet Green. I want to treat myself to a salad, fully knowing that it's going to be about fifteen bucks. Right of course, for the salad, I go to Sweet Green. Oh, but I wanted to add some chickpeas because you know those are filling all right. So then, um, but I you know I love a

good cucumber, so I'll put a cucumber in there. All things told, this damn salad was near twenty three dollars. Okay, at the end of meat ordering it, now wait for it. So then at the end, the guy goes, do you want your dressing on it or do you want it on the side. I'm an on the side girl most of the time, okay, but on this day, I said, I'm gonna eat it right now. I said, go ahead, you can just put it on, honey. I was so furious this guy made it a salad soup. I was like,

that's disgusting. I hate when that happens. The lettuce was literally swimming. I was honestly, I was so upset. It made me like you know when you get angry, and maybe I was like pmssing. It made me like legit want to cry. I'm like, I spent twenty three dollars on this bumbass salad that I can't even eat right now, and it hurt me because I'm thinking to myself, twenty

three dollars, like that's a lot of money. It has a lot of bread, especially when you look at the ingredients and you're like, this is probably two dollars worth of ingredients. I was gonna say that they didn't even give me bread. The bread was not included. So I just said to myself, I'm like, there's gotta be a better way. So I've been looking up these articles and I've been trying to figure out ways that I can curb my spending. Now. It's very challenging in a household

with four different people. But I do think some of these tips are great. And I do think that some of these tips are so extreme and they're just not okay. I'm not willing to do them because then we're not living, you know. So like for example, in your house, you it's just you and noony. You guys just bought a home. How are you cutting back? Like, what are you doing to save money? Because I think everybody you never know

what people know. Some people may roll their eyes and be like, oh, I know all these things, but you may not know some of these. Two my main thing. I made a commitment to not shop for clothing, and Carolina, it was just an addiction. It was just clothes and bags and boxes of unopened stuff, and I had to check myself. I'm like, listen, bitch, go shopping in your

own damn closet. And I just stopped. I'm not saying that addiction is not going to return, but I was able to tweak that problem that I had, and I've saved so much money. Carolyna, I'm telling you I was spending about four hundred dollars on just random clothes that I didn't need monthly. Well now, wait a minute, can I ask you and please be honest, like be transparent. Oh even Amazon, even Amazon, you haven't gotten like a shirt, because that's that's the issue for me. Don't go, Carolyn,

I don't buy no clothes on Amazon. I'm sorry. I'm being one hundred percent transparent. I think I'm still stuck on the fact that I used to be fat, and you know, fat girl's got to be very careful with the quality of the clothes. Oh yo, your polka dot draws is showing through your tights. You know. Oh your rolls is popping. Knock girl dress falls apart. You know. I'm very ichy about buying clothing from Amazon. I think it's an old trauma from when I was two hundred pounds. Yeah,

so yeah, but no, nothing, I'm talking nothing. I do have an item saved that I'm gonna buy one side to side to just go for it. It's a pair of spanks leather tights that I want. They're like a fun fifty and I'm gonna buy them when I'm done not being good. But can I say something, When you spend money on quality products, then you don't need to buy the things from Amazon. That's why I'm doing that, Carly. I just want one good pair of black tights that

I can run down to the ground get my money's worth. Okay, So I'm going to go through this list quickly, and then I want you to do coment with me because I want you to tell me what you're doing. So the first thing that they recommended. And this is from a BuzzFeed article that said, these are the fourteen ways that people are saving money. Okay, so the first one is cancel any and all automatic payments for everything. I will not do this, and I'll tell you why that's weird.

I'm not doing that because I'll forget everything. Exactly. I have too many things. The mental toll that I that I would go through to remember when is the light bill going to go? When it is? You know, when is my automatic When is my payment for capital one? When? You know? Like all of that stuff. I would not be able to do it. But the suggestion was to cancel any and all automatic payments so that you know what you're paying for, so I see what they're saying

with it. You have to know what money is going in and money is going out. But most of the things that I have on automatic payment, like I have no choice. We got to pay for the light, you know what I mean? Like, all right, I'm not willing to do that either. Girl, I won't sleep at night. Did the water get paid? Did the gas get Hell? No, I'm not doing that. But what I do agree with is going over subscriptions like Peacock, Netflix, Stars. I spend

about eighty dollars a month on subscriptions. Carolyn. I'm not gonna lie to you because I gotta watch all types of shows on all different platforms. But maybe I should cancel a couple of those and put out a message. But hey, who's trying to share in stars logging? Okay, you you just took the words out of my mouth. See, I don't have Stars, but I do have Disney because of the kids. Okay, so I use I use my friends Netflix, and I said, I was like, you can

use my Disney like Netflix. Yeah, until Netflix comes and locks me down, babe, like we Carl Well, we had drafts snitching on ourselves. Hello, Andrew, you're gonna delete that. I ain't trying to do no time for no Netflix subscription. No, I mean, listen, everybody doesn't. But I don't feel guilty because I feel like we're just bartering. We're exchanging. Like I'm not just taking your logging and not giving you anything for Yeah, they'll be okay. So that's using a

credit card that gives you rewards. Now I've shared this with you guys in the past. I only have two credit cards, and I pay them in full every month. One is a personal credit card, the other is a joint credit card. So for things like you know, my son's tennis lessons, like Mark and I will both put in that goes out of the joint account, right, But the rewards are real, and I'll tell you I have saved a lot of my points in order to get an airline ticket whenever we're going, you know, on vacation.

We can pay for like the family's airline tickets. So you know, the important thing with a credit card is to just make sure that you're paying off the full balance, you know, So I think that everybody knows that. But using credit cards that give you rewards, it's a real thing. And if you're not getting anything from using your credit card, you should go back to the drawing board and get one that will give you something. All you're doing is

paying interest. But for sure, credit cards that give rewards amazing, Like let's say American Express Platinum. They give you two hundred dollars credit for whatever airline you choose, to give your money back for a hotel. So there are a little perks like I use it the other day to buy something from Laroche. Puss spend seventy five dollars, get fifteen dollars back. Yes, and Honey, you know what I do. I use Racketson. Oh my gosh, you just took it.

That's exactly what I was going to tell people. So for Amex Platinum, if you go and you view their offers, right, so they'll say, like you said, spend seventy five dollars they give me on scrolland scrolland scrolling. Well, but here's the thing. It's like, you have to This is the problem too. You have to be strategic. So that offer, I am going to do it whenever it expires. I'm going to do it like literally the day that it expires, because I have to buy my kids sunscreen. I like

their sunscreen. I think it's quality. Like I'll use that, but I'll go to racketson and get that five percent cash back. You double dipping here all over it. You know. You know the chrome plugin called Honey, and I use that all. I will use all of the rewards. So then it ends up being you get what seventy five dollars worth of product for maybe fifty dollars at the end of the day. You know, So you've got to be really strategic. With like how you're going to be

spending your money? You quit your shopping addiction. I do want to let people know. You know, I've been working on E News and I've been doing my reports and my reporting and stuff and like coming into the city and everything I do, like the clothing subscription services. Just for my situation, I was going to ask you, Okay, can I say a quick story, real quick? Please? Please see. We had an international women's event at our offices a couple of weeks back, and I'm sitting there with Randy.

I love her, one of our sales. I love Randy. And I'm sitting there and I see somebody walk in. I see a suit. I say, what the fuck is in the suit? Randy? Who what is that? I see waves? I see here all the hole, this fucking Carolina. I'm like, that's gotta be some type of celebrity. Who didn't we book? Oh stop it, you're c I sweaty. You look so good. You were floating. She had on like a cream colored suit. Yeah, with the sea through body suit with the tis nice

and perky. That bitch making me look like shit today? Well no, that suit is mine. But you know, you know what, like the thank you. That is so sweet of you. You're making me blush. God, Carolyn, I wish somebody would have recorded because I was losing my mind. I said, you know who this bitches that's ow here making me look so basic today? Oh stop it, you're you talk to Carolina Clothing Subscription. Basically like I, I go and do these shoots for E News and it's

like you can't be wearing the same thing all the time. Unfortunately, that's a part of our industry. People will clown you on social media, be like, oh what that that dress is crusty? You wore that dress for you know, people have fus savages, not that dresses crust Get the fuck I washed it right? No, I know, that's what I'm saying. It's like, you know, because I have beautiful black dresses that I could rewear repurpose, I really don't like to,

you know, use fast fashion. We talked about that last season. So what I've found is that there are a lot of different like clothing services that are out there. Now. You know, I've always loved Rent the Runway for those one off pieces, like you're going to a wedding, Like I don't want to spend a whole three hundred dollars on a new dress. Personally, I don't. I don't have

the money to do that, you know. So because of the frequency of me going out and doing all of these things, I just figured like, I'm going to use a subscription service and basically, like every month you get new clothing, and there's a lot of them out there. There's thread up, there's um oh gosh, what's the other one that's escaping me right now? Stitch fix. So I do think that you should be more open if you're a person who likes variety and you're trying to save

that money. Some of these subscriptions costs like seventy dollars a month, one hundred dollars a month, So think about it. You'd been going to the store and spending one hundred dollars anyway, but now you have that variety of clothing and you don't have to like stay with it, you know, especially if you're an influencer or your content creator. I

think that is an amazing idea. You create content and you send that clothing right back to rent them Runway hat Thun, thanks for the jacket, Yeah, thanks for the dress, and they have all kinds of things. They have little blazers, they have different pants, they have dresses. So and it runs like from casual clothing to to like you know, gowns and stuff like that. So I really would suggest that, like and people think about they're like, well, I'm not

going to spend one hundred dollars on a subscription. You would spend one hundred dollars at H and M Easy. Even Target they have like the yoga pants. You grab like four or five things in Target. You're thinking, you it's cheap. It's not cheap even oh naby you four little workout things. It's one hundred and something dollars. Well, that's why I'm saying in these and some of these subscription services even have that stuff now, the yoga pants, and like, you know, I don't know how you feel

about it, but like they're they clean them. There's and I also, the coochie juice is gone. Don't worry about it. I Am not trying to savor anybody else's juice. Baby, I'm not laminating in that, but no, I just think that, like this is such a great resource for people who want to help the environment. You want to help your pocketbook, and you want to help yourself because I do think that clothing does lift you up sometimes if you pick

the right things, you know. And like you were mentioning the suit that I wore, I got so many compliments and it did make me feel wonderful, you know. But it's like, now I have that suit in my closet, how am I going to repurpose it? What am I? You know? So this is just you give it to me. That's how you're going to And you always are welcome to anything in my closet, you know. It's something that my friend suggested to me, Scottie. Scottie loves using circulars.

Have you ever talked to Scottie be over at zero one hundred. I know who he is. I've spoken to him, but I don't know him, know him, babe. He's like, he's like the coupon king. Really, I swear to you, he says, And I will admit I never do it. Like on Saturdays or Sundays, you know, when you get that bunch of like newspaper stuff in the mail, I never look at him. I always throw it away. He's like, no, you need to go through the circular. Really, I always say or kick it to the side and be like

these motherfucker right. He said that that's where you're going to find out, like what meat is on sale that week, so then you can stock up, or like if strawberries are going to be two for one at a particular store, then you get them at that store. So there are really like different ways where you you know what it is. I think that you have to be aware. Listen, we're talking about an era that we're in that we order Uber eats carolina instead of actually cooking dinner. So it's

we have to pivot. I hate the word, but we have to. Yeah, let's look at the circulars. Let's see what's I'll saale like key food this week, and let's go pick up pivot to save them coins. And then I mentioned it at the beginning of this. You know, I told you anytime I go into the city, I bring my own meals. I do meal plan and I think you know this about me. And if you've been listening to Life in Spanglish, you do know that I am a meal planner. And I will tell you it

extends your groceries more than you could ever know. It gets boring I'm not gonna lie. You know, you're eating the same you know, I like, I'll do salmon, I'll do salmon for like Monday Wednesday, and then I'll do like chicken breast Tuesday Thursday. So I could see how that could get bored. I've seen people and maybe having like twenty tough of ways with the same meal. I'm like, wait, hold on, so you're just don't eat the same shit every day. I need a variety. But I could see

how it saves money. I know. Well, that's why it's like my mom always says, no, you know, liked like you, You've got to like very like have a variety, like, don't just go with the same. Like I made a pot of chili. I Am not going to be having chili every day because that is just not fair for anyone. It's like you no way, but I love me some chili. I ain't even gonna lie to you. No, I gotta make you something now. Some of these on the what

did you like on the list? Because there was one that I had a particular problem with, but go ahead. Sephora quitting the Sephora addiction. Carolina. I spend so much money in Sephora. And you know what I started to do. I started to go through my makeup. I had like brand new lipsticks, brand new palettes. I'm like, why do I just keep buying more eyeshadow? I can probably be an eighty year old woman before I go through all the eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks that I have. So this

one person said that they quit their Sephora addiction. You know, they finally realized that they barely used any of the products that they buy. And that's me. That's me. I'm not gonna have five Messcaras at the same time. I had like y sel do your show this and that girl. I ran through them and now I have one Messcara at a time, and trust me, I am saving a lot of money. Sorry, Spoor, I love you, but I gotta fall back off of you right now. Yes, So

Forre is no joke. And you know who I've been following. I mean I've been following her forever, Bethany Frankel. Have you seen what she's been doing with like the drug Store Beauty. Have you noticed like that she's doing these these commentary videos like like drug Store fines. I love for her humanitarian work, but no, I have not been seeing the videos. I gotta go people. So she's basically calling a lot of these like cosmetic companies out and

saying like look for less basically but for makeup. So she'll say like, was it worth the money? She did drunk Elephant the other day and everything surprisingly, which, by the way, I've heard drunk Elephant is amazing. I've never used their process, but I've heard, yeah, I've heard it's really quality and stuff. And so she tried it for the first time with her daughter and she said, she's like, listen, if you're wanting to spend the money on skincare, like

this one's legit. But then she tried like a different brand that I won't say because I don't want to trash them, and she was just like this is overpriced. You're paying for the packaging and you're paying for the look of this. But she's like, I got the same effect using drug store makeup, So it's your choice whether or not you want to pay for like the box and the aesthetic of this. I gotta go find this video because I am all about saving money this year. I'm not gonna buying a house. Put me in a

whole different headspace. I'm like, oh no, I want to get landscapers here for the spring. Let me not go to Sephora, let me not shop online, let me save my coins because now I'm prioritizing differently. Carolina, as a homeowner, well as I'll tell you that landscaping bill is gonna come in, it's gonna blow your money. I'm like, I'm at privacy trees. I want trees that are circles. Honey, Oh my goodness, I want to swirl trees. I wanted works now and I look out at my backyard and

sometimes I look at my husband. I'm just like, all that money that we spent because you know it's seasonal, and then they're gonna get you again because you've got to clean up after the winter. That's a yearly bill. Don't don't shout of my jeeves, Carolina, Babe, Babe, I would tell you just budget the landscapers. I'm telling you right now, because they will literally come and what it is, it's just like mowing the lawn, putting in those trees,

the labor, all of that stuff. That's why I said to mark the number one thing that we spent money on when we first moved in. I said to him, when they're out there, they need to build a garden for me, because I want a garden, and that's another way to save money during the spring. That's why I'm at Carolina. So you're trying to say, maybe I should build my own garden. One hundred percent, babe. It is one of the most gratifying, wonderful I look forward to

my time with the earthworms. Okay, they don't talk back. They are They're out there just doing their job, helping me grow my produce so I don't have to go to Whole Foods and spend all kinds of money on tomatoes and cucumbers and zucchini. I really do. I have a great garden, and it's taken years for me to get there, but I love it. Did you just tell me you have your own vegetables. That's a different girl. When you say guarded, I'm thinking flowers. I'm not thinking

strawberries and corn and tomatoes. That's real different, Carolina, Honey. I can my own peppers. What I know, had a candle barbers. Yes, I am the Latina Martha Stewart. Baby, I'm like not even kidding you. I went into this whole mode when I came into my home and like I just said to Mark, I grow my own eggplant. I'll make my kids fresh like I plant farm like currently Carolina or no. Well, when you were a young mom, no every year, because you know new moms, they'd be like, oh,

I'll make my own baby food. I've heard dad. Oh hell no, no, no, no, no no no. I was not one of those. No. But like every I normally wait until mid May. I need footage of this carolina. You don't have to post on social media because I'm gonna have to see this farming you call gardening. You call it gardening. I call it farming, garbing. It's like you can you getting vegetables out of your crops. That's farming, girl.

It's it's like the size of a baby pool. No, there's my dad and I got you have to, but that's another way to save money. There you go absolutely and you have the space grow your own veget For me, it's more of the meditative aspect. I put on music, I go out there, I weed. I like tend to my garden. I make sure that everything is growing. I do my own herbs, I have my own basil, my own cilantro. Cilantro is hard though it gets burned in the sun, like when it's really really hot in New York.

So I'm thinking of doing something different this year. But no, this is like, this is a real thing. Like I have different types of tomatoes. Um, yeah, I have different types of peppers. Like I'm down for a good garden. I like that. Look at that here given ideas. Now I want to make a garden. No need to get ready, I want to. I want to plat on a tree from the back. You may not have the right environment for it, I know you can always try. I love the idea of no spend weeks. This is a really

cool idea. And honey, I think you're kind of on it now with like the no buying like clothes, stuff. But like there's this whole movement where people are having a no spend week. I know a friend who basically said, I'm allocating one hundred dollars for emergencies for this week. My goal is to not spend any money. Now gas that's a whole different animal I'm talking about, Like, if

you need something, you buy it with that cash. And people are saying that they're finding a lot of success and they're saving money by doing these no spend weeks where it's like you are not even buying a pack of gum unless you need it. Giving yourself you're making yourself be disciplined when it comes to your money, and I'm here for it. The one thing that I'm very curious about is the imperfect food thing. Like a lot of people have tried me about these imperfect foods. Have

you seen these ads, I've seen the commercial. I just I don't know why I'm worried about what's going to come in the box, but I need to get over that fear. I guess. Yeah. It's basically like peppers that may not have the shape, but they're still good. They just won't put them out on the floor because they

know nobody will buy them. And this company basically will send you a box of these imperfect foods and you can use them for recipes and things like at the end of the day, you're cutting them up for real. That's a fact. Yeah, And so it's like, I don't even care what they look like, but I've been curious to try. Let's produce. I'm guessing yeah, I think it is. It's produced. But now the thing that I have an issue with is there are little things in life that

give us joy. Okay, I'm not talking about your Starbucks addiction where you're getting two lattes a day, or where you're going to get as smoothie or an OUTSI evil every day, but I do think it becomes a little extremely I do want to enjoy life. Like if I want to pop off to a Dunkin Donuts and you know, grab myself a coffee, I feel like I should still be able to. I think everything in moderation. That's just fat.

But do it once a week. Like our old building, Carolina, we had a Starbucks as a lobby, and I would go down there for and when I got there, and then i'd go down there in the afternoon. And I was spending two hundred dollars a week on Starbucks, Carolina drinks, pastries, rotine box. That's a box. I was just gonna say that that was a problem. And I had to quit that. And and I was gaining all this week because I I want a caramel frappucchio and put some of this.

No no, no no, no no. It was killing me. Actually, So a treat once a week, it's not gonna break the bank. And it's also not gonna you know, have your hips out here spreading wide the way minds were not the spread hip. No, don't do it, honey, don't talk about it. No, because it's true. You know, you've got the caramel Maqui autos and that has a lot of sugar that it's gonna pack on the pounds. Now the one that I absolutely love, and I feel like I've talked about this before. Is it a drink? No? Oh,

I'm gonna say which one. Girl. Tell me, honey, you're in a new neighborhood. You're we've mentioned that you have a new home. Will you please please get to know your library? Mm? Interesting? Oh god, I don't know why. I just thought about Joe Goldberg from you, and it kind of scared me. But I'll try it. I'm not a new person. Does he like Does it take place in the library? He loves books, He owns a bookstore, He works at a bookstore. They go to the library.

But yeah, go ahead, tell me all about the library. I'll put Joe to the back of my mind. So I was spending hundreds of dollars a month on books. I love to read. I read in my spare time. I read in the car while I'm waiting for a pickup a target. I read in the car while I'm waiting for my kids to come out of basketball practice or religion. I have books everywhere. My husband said that he loves that about me, like I will curl up with a book sooner than I will like turn on

a TV show. Okay, So when I realized how much money I was spending on these books, and then what do I do. I end up donating them. That's like thousands of dollars a year, which I think it's great you donate then other people can use it. But I went to the library when Noah was like two years old, and we have a great library where I live on Long Island. Girl. They have programs like you can learn how to play chess. They have like yoga on Saturdays.

They also have books that you can check out, like the new book by Oh Gosh, it's not new anymore. But Rick Rubin the art of being creative like Rick Rubin for those of you who don't know, he started like basically def jam. He's a pioneer. He's one of the legends. Yeah, total boss. But I was curious, like, what is his book about. It's it's a little trippy, but it was so good. But like anyway, that book would have cost me thirty dollars, boom, went to my library.

Done the Harry book. Got that from my library. Get out of you for I never thought about it. I was always a book lover. But when me and when he moved in together, he said I could not bring my book collection, and I don't know, it just put such a like little hole in my heart that I never bought books again. Carolina, No, your heart is about to be full, because when I tell you I love my library, they all know me. There they I'm gonna go.

I'm gonna go see what I got. Bring. I gotta bring one of my utility bills and playing Yes, yeah, bring. But you know what this is also for people who like, maybe you're you know, you're working in the city and you're commuting on the train and you don't want to be scrolling on your phone all the time. Go to your library, get a book, like get back into the Game. They have games, honey, like my kids love the Switch.

I told them I'm not buying you Pokemon maybe because like, well know what they have is like they have the actual games. So my kids one week are into Pokemon, the next week they hate Pokemon. Oh my gosh, that is like so five years ago, even though it was like last week. I will I won't spend the money on buying them a switch game, because I'll go to the library check it out for a week. They get there, you know, the yeah, and then I take it back.

It's unbelievable. It's a great resource. And it's not even just for books. Like I said, they have programs there, like there are a lot of people who listen to this podcast who maybe want to learn how to do something new or you know, they have finance seminars sometimes, like there's so much that I know there is you know, no, no, no, no, no, non't worry about it. I just went on the public library for the town I moved into girl. They got karate for kids. Yes, that's what I'm telling you. They

have all different kinds of programs. Um. I was cute. This is really really cute. I like it. They have a team library club, they have crafts for kids. They have a writer's circle if you want to be a writer. This is really cool. Carolyne and it's all free.
