Lessons of History: The Cycle of Ancient Civilizations (Will & Ariel Durant) | ASMR

This is a reading, and sparse commentary, about the recorded cycle that societies/civilizations oscillate through, as seen in ancient Greece, revolutionary France and perhaps even in today's data-laden America. This periodic trend is marked by governments of tyranny that are overthrown into a free society, which then evolve into being burdened with anarchy and decentralized value systems. The anxiety provoked by such chaos caves to the stability of tyranny so it is welcomed once again under the ...

Supernovae and Variable Stars: Astronomy in 1836 vs 2020 | ASMR soft spoken

Shop Manta Sleep's awesome masks here: (10% off if you use LETSFINDOUT at checkout thru 12/15/2020) In 1836 astronomy was still a budding science. The Andromeda galaxy was still just a curiosity; a hazy nebula yet to be explored. Supernovae were still deep mysteries. And the thought that our universe could be more than 100,000 light-years across was unheard of. Let's find out how far our knowledge of space (supernovae and variable stars, in particular tonight), has come in 200 years. "...it is a...

(3 HRS) An Even Older 200 Year-Old Astronomy Book (1836) | ASMR whisper

This is part 2 (out of who knows how many...) of our adventure through this nearly 200 year-old astronomy atlas, "Geography of the Heavens" by Elijah Burritt, an early 19th century black smith-turned-educator. *My even older copy of Burritt's book came in a couple days ago and I couldn't have been more pleased. It's binding almost fell apart, so I was extra careful with handling it. We look in detail at the preface and introductory essay titled "Advantages of the Study of Astronomy."

Our Oriental Heritage: Finding Common Ground in History | Will Durant | ASMR

Aside from his famous book on the lives and opinions of the greatest philosophers (The Story of Philosophy), the renowned historian, Will Durant, wrote an 11 volume overview of all of human history (The Story of Civilization). In this episode I use vol. 1 (Our Oriental Heritage) as a jumping off point to consider the biological, cultural, and historical common ground we all share and the power of a unified world-view that embraces forward progress into the unknown. Thanks for watching. Check out...

Santa Sold Shrooms: The Deep History of Santa | ASMR

Santa Claus is one of the last living mythical figures. The image of the modern Santa is derived from a few 19th century children's stories, but the idea these were based on goes back hundreds, and very likely tens of thousands of years into the past of humanity. Also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, or Kris Kringle, Santa is a legendary figure originating in Western Christian culture who is said to bring gifts to the homes of well-behaved children on the night of Christmas...
