The double-feature from those ingenues of cinema verite, Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, promised to be the box office event of the summer, along with all the meme culture meets pop culture cachet that came with it. While both films performed well, the former won the battle, with the long-gestating film based on Mattel’s bestselling doll bringing in over a billion dollars at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023. With Margot Robbie in the title role leading an all-star cast, including Ryan Gosling as Ken, the pink-drenched flick’s production department caused a national paint shortage of its signature hue. Now we’re just three hosts living in a Barbie world, having an existential crisis, thinking about dying and looking fabulous while doing it!
