末(に)indicates the end of an arduous period of time. The main nuance between this end/after is the hard word and effort that does into the thing that is being modified by the 末(に). The に can be omitted leaving the same meaning. However, the 末に together indicate an exact time, while 末 also indicates the end of the period.
