Wat je allemaal nog wilt bereiken. Haha, yes exactly. I was just thinking, about the future and all. What you still want to achieve. Maarten: Oh jee, daar gaan we. De grote levensvragen op een dinsdagmiddag. Oh dear, here we go. The big life questions on a Tuesday afternoon. Lisa: Nee, serieus! Ik heb best wel duidelijke dromen, weet je. Niet alleen over werk, maar over alles. No, seriously! I actually have pretty clear dreams, you know. Not just about work, but about everything. Maarten: Oké, ik luister. Wat zijn dan die grote dromen van Lisa de grafisch ontwerper? Okay, I'm listening. So what are those big dreams of Lisa the graphic designer? Lisa: Nou, mijn grootste ambitie is om ooit mijn eigen ontwerpstudio te hebben. Iets kleins, heel persoonlijk, waar ik zelf de projecten kies. Well, my biggest ambition is to someday have my own design studio. Something small, very personal, where I choose the projects myself. Maarten: Dat klinkt goed. Dat past wel bij je. Heb je al concrete plannen daarvoor? That sounds good. That suits you. Do you already have concrete plans for that? Lisa: Plannen, plannen... Het is nu nog vooral een droom. Maar ik ben wel aan het sparen. Als ik genoeg geld zou hebben, zou ik het liefst een huisje buiten de stad kopen. Plans, plans... For now, it's mostly still a dream. But I am saving up. If I had enough money, I'd prefer to buy a small house outside the city. Maarten: Een huisje met een atelier eraan vast, kan ik me voorstellen. A house with an attached studio, I can imagine. Lisa: Ja! Precies! Zodat ik werk en leven meer kan combineren op een rustige plek, met veel natuur om me heen. Dat lijkt me het ideaal. Yes! Exactly! So I can combine work and life more in a quiet place, with lots of nature around me. That seems ideal to me. Maarten: Dat is een mooi streven. En wat is je verwachting daarbij? Dat je dan gelukkiger bent? That's a beautiful aspiration. And what's your expectation with that? That you'll be happier then? Lisa: Ik hoop vooral dat ik dan meer creatieve vrijheid heb. En een betere werk-privébalans, weet je wel? Dat je niet constant geleefd wordt door deadlines. I mainly hope that I'll have more creative freedom then. And a better work-life balance, you know? That you're not constantly driven by deadlines. Maarten: Dat is waar. Die balans is belangrijk. Er wordt in Nederland gelukkig wel steeds meer aandacht aan besteed. That's true. That balance is important. Fortunately, more and more attention is being paid to it in the Netherlands. Lisa: Zeker. En wat zijn jouw dromen dan, Maarten? Wil jij voor altijd voor de klas blijven staan? Definitely. And what are your dreams then, Maarten? Do you want to stay in front of the class forever? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Ik vind mijn werk heel betekenisvol. Maar... soms droom ik er wel van om een boek te schrijven. Een kinderboek, natuurlijk. Actually, yes. I find my work very meaningful. But... sometimes I do dream of writing a book. A children's book, of course. Lisa: Nee! Wat leuk! Dat wist ik helemaal niet van je. Dat is een serieuze ambitie. No! How fun! I didn't know that about you at all. That's a serious ambition. Maarten: Nou ja, het is meer een vaag idee dan een concreet plan. De verwachting is niet dat het morgen in de winkel ligt, zeg maar. Dat dit soort dromen niet onmogelijk voelen. Je hoeft niet meteen alles op te geven om iets nieuws te proberen. Do you know what I like so much about the Netherlands? That these kinds of dreams don't feel impossible. You don't immediately have to give up everything to try something new. Maarten: Ja, die nuchterheid is wel typisch. Het idee dat een goed leven niet per se een groots en meeslepend leven hoeft te zijn. Gewoon je ding kunnen doen, dat is al een doel op zich. Yes, that down-to-earthness is quite typical. The idea that a good life doesn't necessarily have to be a grand and epic life. Just being able to do your own thing, that's already a goal in itself. Lisa: Precies! Het is de hoop dat je je eigen pad kunt kiezen. Dat is volgens mij een van de mooiste dingen hier. Exactly! It's the hope that you can choose your own path. I think that's one of the most beautiful things here. Maarten: Je gebruikte net de woorden ambitie, streven en doel. Voor mij klinken die best wel hetzelfde, eigenlijk. You just used the words ambition, aspiration, and goal. To me, they sound pretty much the same, actually. Lisa: Hm, ja, dat snap ik. Maar voor mij is er wel een verschil. Een doel is iets wat je kunt afvinken, iets concreets dat je kunt bereiken. 'Ik wil 10.000 euro sparen', bijvoorbeeld. Hmm, yes, I understand that. But for me, there is a difference. A goal is something you can tick off, something concrete you can achieve. 'I want to save 10,000 euros', for example. Maarten: Oké, helder. Dat is meetbaar. Okay, clear. That's measurable. Lisa: Precies. En ambitie is meer de drive erachter, de wens om te groeien. En streven... dat is meer de richting, de waarde. Mijn streven is creatieve vrijheid, snap je? Exactly. And ambition is more the drive behind it, the desire to grow. And aspiration... that's more the direction, the value. My aspiration is creative freedom, you know? Maarten: Ja, dat is een goeie uitleg. Het een is concreet, het ander meer een gevoel of een richting. Weer wat geleerd van jou. Yes, that's a good explanation. One is concrete, the other more a feeling or a direction. Learned something from you again. Lisa: Dus, we hebben het gehad over onze dromen voor de toekomst.
