Lisa: Hé Maarten! Lisa: Hey Maarten! Maarten: Hoi Lisa. Alles goed? Maarten: Hi Lisa. How are you? Lisa: Ja hoor, beetje moe. Ik heb gisteravond tot laat de uitslagen van de verkiezing zitten kijken. Man man man, wat een gedoe. Lisa: Yeah, a bit tired. I was up late last night watching the election results. Oh man, what a hassle. Maarten: Ah, de nasleep. Ja, ik ook. Het is toch altijd weer spannend wat er uit de stembus komt. Maarten: Ah, the aftermath. Yeah, me too. It's always exciting to see what comes out of the ballot box. No single party is big enough to govern alone. Lisa: En het lijkt wel alsof niemand met elkaar wil samenwerken dit keer. Iedereen roept van alles tijdens de campagne, maar daarna is het stil. Of ze zeggen 'met die partij gaan we echt niet regeren'. Lisa: And it seems like nobody wants to cooperate this time. Everyone says all sorts of things during the campaign, but afterwards it's silent. Or they say 'we're really not going to govern with that party'. Maarten: Dat is campagnetaal. The idea behind it is that through deliberation, you arrive at a solution that the majority can live with. You look for a compromise. Lisa: Dus niemand krijgt precies wat 'ie wil, maar ook niemand krijgt helemaal niets? Lisa: So nobody gets exactly what they want, but nobody gets absolutely nothing either? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Het voorkomt dat één partij alles kan beslissen zonder met anderen rekening te houden. Ik moet dit ook wel eens uitleggen in mijn klas. Maarten: Pretty much. Niet alleen voor de mensen die op de grootste partij hebben gestemd. Maarten: Exactly. Politics is for the whole country. Not just for the people who voted for the largest party. Lisa: Dat is waar. Maar wie wordt dan de nieuwe premier, denk je? Heeft iemand daar al iets zinnigs over gezegd? Lisa: That's true. But who do you think will be the new prime minister? Has anyone said anything sensible about that yet? Maarten: Nee, dat is de grote vraag. Dat hangt helemaal af van welke partijen samen een regering gaan vormen. Dat kan nog wel even duren. De vorige keer duurde het recordlang. Maarten: No, that's the big question. That completely depends on which parties will form a government together. That could still take a while. Last time it took a record long time. Lisa: Oh ja, vreselijk. Gaat lekker. Geduld is niet mijn sterkste kant, haha. Ik wil gewoon weten wie de ministers worden en wat ze gaan doen. Oh yes, terrible. Dat zou een chaos worden. No way. Imagine if you and I had to govern a country. That would be chaos. Maarten: Ik denk dat dat wel meevalt.
