Lisa: Hoi Maarten!
Hi Maarten!

Maarten: Hey Lisa. Alles goed?
Hey Lisa. How are you?

Lisa: Ja, prima! Ik sprak net mijn zus. Mijn neefje zit in groep 8 en hij is super zenuwachtig.
Yes, great! I just spoke to my sister. My nephew is in group 8 and he's super nervous.

Maarten: Oh ja? Waarvoor dan?
Oh really? What for then?

Lisa: Voor het advies voor de middelbare school! Ik weet nog dat ik dat ook heel spannend vond.
For the secondary school advice! I remember I found that very nerve-wracking too.

Maarten: Ja, dat snap ik. Het is ook een belangrijk moment. Als leraar zie ik dat elk jaar in mijn eigen school.
Yes, I understand that. It's also an important moment. As a teacher, I see that every year in my own school.

Lisa: Jij moet dat advies dus geven. Ik vraag me echt af hoe je dat bepaalt. Is dat niet heel moeilijk?
So you have to give that advice. I really wonder how you determine that. Isn't that very difficult?

Maarten: Soms wel. We kijken naar de resultaten van een leerling over meerdere jaren. En natuurlijk naar de Cito-toets, al is die nu minder belangrijk.
Sometimes it is. We look at a student's results over several years. And of course at the Cito test, although it's less important now.

Lisa: Oh wacht, de Cito-toets is niet meer zo belangrijk? Ik dacht altijd dat dat hét grote moment was.
Oh wait, the Cito test isn't that important anymore? I always thought that was the big moment.

Maarten: Nee, het advies van de leraar is nu het belangrijkst. De toets is meer een extra controle. Als een leerling op de toets veel beter scoort, moeten we het advies heroverwegen.
No, the teacher's advice is now the most important. The test is more of an extra check. If a student scores much better on the test, we have to reconsider the advice.

Lisa: Ah, oké. En dan krijgen ze dus een advies voor vmbo, havo of vwo. Dat zijn echt van die typisch Nederlandse termen.
Ah, okay. And then they get advice for vmbo, havo or vwo. Those are really typical Dutch terms.

Maarten: Ja, precies. Soms ook een dubbel advies, bijvoorbeeld vmbo-t/havo. Dan kan een leerling nog een beetje kiezen welke kant hij op wil.
Yes, exactly. Sometimes also a double advice, for example vmbo-t/havo. Then a student can still somewhat choose which direction they want to go.

Lisa: Dat is wel fijn. Ik weet niet meer welk advies ik precies kreeg. Volgens mij was het havo/vwo. Uiteindelijk heb ik vwo gedaan. Was jij meteen een vwo-leerling?
That's nice. I don't remember exactly what advice I got. I think it was havo/vwo. In the end, I did vwo. Were you immediately a vwo student?

Maarten: Eigenlijk wel, ja. Ik vond leren altijd wel makkelijk. Maar dat is niet voor iedereen zo. Het is belangrijk dat een kind op de juiste plek zit.
Actually, yes. I always found learning easy. But that's not the case for everyone. It's important that a child is in the right place.

Lisa: Ja, dat is waar. Welke vakken vond jij leuk op de middelbare school?
Yes, that's true. Which subjects did you like in secondary school?

Maarten: Geschiedenis en biologie. Daarom ben ik misschien ook wel leraar geworden. En jij?
History and biology. That's perhaps why I became a teacher. And you?

Lisa: Tekenen natuurlijk, en geschiedenis. Ik vond talen moeilijk. Ik vraag me af of de vakken nu heel anders zijn dan vroeger.
Drawing, of course, and history. I found languages difficult. I wonder if the subjects are very different now than they used to be.

Maarten: De basis is hetzelfde, maar er zijn nu wel meer keuzes, denk ik. Bijvoorbeeld met techniek of media. Elke leerling is anders en heeft andere interesses.
The basis is the same, but there are more choices now, I think. For example, with technology or media. Every student is different and has different interests.

Lisa: Dat is waar. Het is best een systeem, hè? Eerst de basisschool, dan een advies en dan moet je een nieuwe school kiezen. Met nieuwe leraren en nieuwe klasgenoten.
That's true. It's quite a system, isn't it? First primary school, then an advice, and then you have to choose a new school. With new teachers and new classmates.

Maarten: Zeker. En na de middelbare school moet je weer kiezen. Dan ga je voor je diploma, en daarna studeren of werken.
Certainly. And after secondary school, you have to choose again. Then you go for your diploma, and after that, study or work.

Lisa: Pfoe, ja. Gelukkig hoef ik niet meer te kiezen. Ik ben blij met mijn werk. Maar voor die kinderen is het een grote stap. Ze vragen zich vast af wat de beste keuze is.
Phew, yeah. Luckily, I don't have to choose anymore. I'm happy with my work. But for those children, it's a big step. They're probably wondering what the best choice is.

Maarten: Ja, die stap van de basisschool naar de middelbare school is groot.
Yes, that step from primary school to secondary school is a big one.

Lisa: En dat ene woord, 'het advies', is dan zo belangrijk. Eigenlijk beslist de leraar best veel over de toekomst van een leerling.
And that one word, 'the advice', is then so important. Actually, the teacher decides quite a lot about a student's future.

Maarten: Nou ja, we proberen te kijken wat het beste past. Of een kind beter praktisch leert, zoals op het vmbo, of meer theoretisch. Het is geen oordeel.
Well, we try to see what fits best. Whether a child learns better practically, like in vmbo, or more theoretically. It's not a judgment.

Lisa: Nee, dat snap ik. En dan heb je dus havo en vwo. Ik vergeet altijd wat de letters betekenen. Weet jij waar VWO voor staat?
No, I understand that. And then you have havo and vwo. I always forget what the letters mean. Do you know what VWO stands for?

Maarten: Ja, Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs. En havo is Hoger Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs.
Yes, Preparatory Scientific Education. And havo is Higher General Secondary Education.

Lisa: Oh ja! Dat is waar. VWO duurt het langst, toch? En daarmee kan je naar de universiteit.
