Gamal Abdel Nasser,  Egyptian military officer and politician who served as the second president of Egypt from 1956 until his death in 1970. Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal and secured Soviet assistance to build the Aswan High Dam after the U.S. and Britain canceled their offer of aid.  He is remembered as a charismatic figure, who aspired to lead the Arab world and succeeded briefly in forming the United Arab Republic with Syria (which collapsed shortly thereafter). After his death, thousands of people pouring onto the streets of major cities throughout the Arab world.
