Hi. It's Mike Raven. Here it is episode 320, it has been a while. I'm going to try to do more of these. It's November 10th 2022. Today I'm reading a post that I recently published titled psychological safety as a precondition for lean. Simply put we cannot get 20 harm without psychological safety. I wrote that as part of a page that I published on the value capture website, you can find a link to it in the blog post for this episode.
You can go to lean blog dot org slash audio 320 that page on the valley capture website is titled psychological safety and it's essential link to continuous Improvement. I hope you will go check that out, but I've come to understand that psychological. Safety. This concept, this real thing that is out there in organizations or not. It's a precondition for implementing lean. Or however you might say it.
And I should go back and clarify, it's not, yes, no. In terms of psychological safety, there are degrees of psychological safety that are felt in perceived by different people in an organization or not felt. But anyway, Toyota seems to strive for if not have Relatively high level of psychological safety. You can't expect to copy, Toyota tools, and expect them to work the same way with the same Effectiveness in your workplace.
If you don't have a high enough level of psychological safety where you are, you can't have continuous Improvement without a high enough. Level of psychological safety, you won't have high class performance without a high enough level of psychological safety. So again, why do I say High Enough? If it's not a binary, yes, no situation. When it comes to psychological safety, there is a spectrum. We don't say or ask, is it psychologically safe.
That asks for a yes-no answer it's more a matter of how safe is it. And again, safety is a matter of individual perspective, how safe do you feel that? It is the same environment. Might feel relatively safe for you, but at the same time, not for me. Tan are different experiences. Both in the current organization as well as past experiences. Or you might say baggage that we bring with us as we each way the decision of do, I speak up to
challenge the status quo or not? Your risk-reward balance, might very well be different than mine so I'm excited to have been trained and certified by a company called leader factor on a methodology they refer to and there's a great book. Book by the same Title, by Timothy our Clark, the four stages of psychological safety. This methodology can be used to measure learn and improve psychological safety.
My learning continues, I've been really energized by what I've learned from, Tim Clark, his work and from leader factor, I would love to work with you on this within your team or your organization.
