Episode description

The eighth of a ten part series based on a book by Phil Denton and Micky Mellon, ‘The First 100 Days ; Lessons In Leadership From The Football Bosses.’ They will donate all proceeds to the Len Johnrose Trust which will help in the fight against motor neurone disease and that’s a good enough reason to buy this book. It is, however, a brilliant book jam packed with wisdom on the art of management and Rob is going to introduce you to it over the next ten episodes.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • This episode and book chapter are discussing communication, culture and leadership.
  • Your communication as the leader sets the tone for the organisation. Keep information and instruction concise and clear. Use tone, body language and precise language to make clear to all who are listening your intention.
  • Make sure you have a strong element of self care to ensure as the key figure you are on top physical and mental form to service your position. This includes your inner dialogue and your mindset, your team talk to yourself, and how you achieve a calm, confident and dependable demeanour.
  • When we receive information our brains filter it in two ways. An emotional way ; gut feeling, reactive, responsive and fast. An analytical way ; slower, informed and more reflective. Decide which of those two reactions you want to access.
  • If you doubt that ‘worlds change worlds’ just remember how the world has been changed by great speakers and speeches and how your world is changed by the things that are said to you.
  • The culture of an organisation dictates how people meet and talk, where they do so and who associates with who. You are like the parent or big brother who informs the culture that everyone looks to. You are part of the team, not a dictator. Be  supportive, approachable and, most of all, create a feeling of safety.
  • The greatest leaders are the greatest servants. Help people out. Do the dirty work.

BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s our internal dialogue, what we say to ourselves, on a daily, consistent, minute by minute, second by second basis that has a phenomenal impact on where we are mentally and therefore where we are in the world.’

‘You want an urgent, immediate response. You may want them to be angry. You may want them to get upset. You may want them to get frustrated. You may want a response now. That is attacking the emotional pathway.’

‘If you speak positively to people, empathetically, in the correct tone you will illicit a much different response.’

‘People who are totally behind what you are doing and actually facilitate the development of the culture that you are aiming to create. Cultural Architects.’

‘Don’t be the person who gets picked up and dropped off in the limousine, stands fifty metres away from everybody else and doesn’t engage. That is not servant leadership.’
