Episode description

Perseverance and determination really go a long way.

In this episode of Leader Manager Coach Podcast, Rob talks to Josh Gordon from Walsall Football Club to prove that there are things you need more to achieve success, not just your talent.

Josh shares his personal stories and everything about his football career. He has been playing at an early age and has been continuing to improve himself in order to be one of the best professional football players out there. Of course, like anybody else, his career wasn't always filled with rainbows and unicorns. He's had setbacks, which have been part of his life and have helped him grow stronger. Discover from today's discussion about how he deals with such challenges and prepares for great opportunities.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Josh says starting training early has become fruitful for his football career. Josh has been playing football since he was really young even though his dad could get him inclined into basketball. When Josh was six, he started playing for Stoke City until he was 15.
  • Like any other kids, he used to slack – arrive late during practices and show disinterest. He got disciplined and told he's just wasting his talents if he continues to act irresponsibly.
  • It came to a point in his career that a lot of teams want him. His coach pushed him harder since he believed in him. This brought him enough motivation to play better and get his name out there.
  • Josh also owes a lot of what he has learned from his coach in Stoke City, Andy Holmes. Andy helped him with instilling in him the passion of the game.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I think experience in men's football early, doing bets on the side, going into a development team and getting the technical part of the game… I think – is the best way.”
  • “I think most people that I've worked with have given me a little bit of everything. Some stuff is bad, some stuff is good. But the good stuff and the bad stuff – together, really – are what you are expected to do.”
