Playing And Beyond - An Interview With Ciaran Toner
Episode description
In this episode Rob interviews ex-pro footballer Ciaran Toner. Ciaran has a wealth experience in the game of football, including being on the other side of training which is why he began coaching after retiring as a footballer. He has now also developed and created a player and coach platform to connect those in football in unique ways and provide countless opportunities for them.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Ciaran was born in Northern Ireland but moved to England as a teen and was signed to Tottenham Hotspur football club where he stayed for five years. He then went onto have a successful career in league two football until he decided to retire.
- Ciaran was fortunate to have good experiences in the game and has used these experiences to guide and build his coaching practice.
- In this day and age, there are support networks everywhere. It doesn't have to be your Mum or your Dad, it can be your coach or an online community. It's key to remember that.
- Unfortunately, there are a lot of young players that aren't willing to work as hard as the game requires. This is why one of the aspects Ciaran taught his coachees was a bit of ‘tough love'. He made it so they were prepared for the often brutal and ruthless industry of football.
- Sometimes we fall into the trap or picking and choosing how we see the world to fit in with our own ideals and needs. But the reality is that the world we live in can be harsh, difficult and cruel. We need to be prepared ourselves for that as well as preparing those we coach and lead.
- It is extremely difficult to become an elite football player. Sometimes no matter how much passion or skill a person has they can still end up falling short and a lot of them do.
- Ciaran and his business partner John have created a player platform where players get opportunities to be scouted, have access to both learning and support resources as well as performance content and job/career boards. They have also developed a coach platform alongside this as a resource for coaches.
