Episode description

In this episode Rob talks about leadership from the life of player, manager and director the late great Walter Smith OBE. A colleague and friend, Rob recalls what lessons can be learned from this football legend and how they can be applied in your leadership role.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Walter talks about the essential nature of hard work to achieve success. He had to put in the effort to make a mark in the industry as a coach and in doing so cemented his relationships with others in the game.
  • He spent a long time as an assistant manager in a number of positions, at one time assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson and so his level of experience is almost unmatched. This is what eventually made him into a great leader.
  • Walter was very adaptable to the varying personalities he encountered in his career including some difficult ones. The importance of being compatible with those around you cannot be underestimated.
  • He also followed his heart in his career. Happiness makes people excel in their jobs compared to people bearing unpleasant positions who can become stayed and jaded.

BEST MOMENTS

‘One of the amazing things that stands out in Walters life is that he's almost on his own as a great manager, leader and decision maker and guided clubs to an amazing numbers of successes.'

‘What a wonderful assistant he would be. I don't think you could ever get anybody better to be able to slip into that role and yet grasp the mantle of leadership when it was offered to you.'

‘A good friend of mine talks about making your parachute for when you need it. There is no point making your parachute as you're dropping through the air.'

‘The opportunity was there for him to grasp. He'd done the work. He was ready, empowered and knew it was his time. He stepped up.'
