Episode description

Day to Day Inspirational Living in Dhaka

In this fascinating episode, Rob shares a taste of what it's like living in Dhaka and doing what he loves. He gives a view on day to day life working with the national youth team and on the many fascinating aspects of being part of a different culture.

The city of Dhaka is a place that is a stark contrast to the lake district hamlet he has have come from and the city is one that is continually on the move.

As a part of the team building something that will have an impact and make a difference  Rob reflects on the process of building a national team in a country where people grab their opportunities and are willing to work to make a difference to their futures.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Our training ground is an oasis that stands next to a factory complex.
  • There are ladies who are there when we arrive and when we leave and their sole responsibility is to pick weeds and bad grass from the rest of the grass.
  • We practice functional plays, set pieces and all the elements that any coach would undertake in daily training.
  • There is so much potential and we are seeking to not just get it right, but get it right repeatedly.
  • Don't practise until you get it right practise until you can't get it wrong.
  • We are here coaching football and trying to make a difference.
  • There are boys here who could make a splash if they were playing in the English game but there is a challenge in getting opportunities for these boys.
  • If we can get them out there, they can return successfully to represent their country, bringing Bangladesh credibility.
  • Those boys can come back and bring all their learning and impact on their own teams and the national team moving forward.
  • It will take time – all we can do is affect one day at a time, one individual at a time.
  • If you want to affect change you have to be the change.
  • Making little changes can make all the difference over time.

BEST MOMENTS

‘It's a blessing to be able to put hours of work into something you love'

‘If you have an opportunity to do something out of your comfort zone and that requires you changing your life, you should grab the opportunity'

‘They do it hours and  hours every day because they have to, it the hand life has dealt them'
