Episode description

In this episode, we hear about the motivating journey Rob has taken and how his experiences positive and negative have shaped his career. This episode has lots to offer if you are beginning your career or already on your way because ultimately the journey is what it's all about.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Football and sport were the fundamental building blocks of my life. My ambition was to be a professional but one of the certainties in life is that we have to deal with disappointment and following the setback of not being able to go further, a change in direction led me to train as a physiotherapist.
  • The Plateau

Having qualified I spent some time on the plateau. I worked in the evenings with youth players and their parents. This is the time I when I did the hours to learn and master my trade. Ask anyone successful and they will tell you, you have to complete the grind.

  • Always be a Student

Asking questions to deepen your understanding will bring new opportunities to be explored.

  • I've always wanted to know about ‘why' and ‘how' and being in learner mode is a great place to be.
  • Falling Out of Love

Due to personal circumstances I fell out of love with what I was doing and lost my way.

  • Looking back, I don't regret the decisions I made at this point. The person I am today is the result of the journey and pathways I have taken.
  • Dealing with Stress

Each situation brings different challenges but no matter what the world throws at you, you do have the ability to deal with it. I have learnt that challenges and pressures can be different but if you have the capacity you can use any situation as a learning experience.

It's important to be grateful for the contrasting experiences that you have.

  • Understanding No One is an Island

You should never think you can do something alone embrace the relationships you have and understand that everyone needs to have an external network of support.

  • Self- Belief

You must have self-belief if you want to follow your heart and passion to do what you want.

Understand that you have everything within you to achieve what it is you want to achieve if you are prepared to do what you need to do to get there.

There are icons in every industry and there is everything right about looking up to them and copying some of the successful things they do.
