Episode description

We're often told that there's no “I” in “Team”, but sometimes it can be beneficial to break down a team's strengths into its individual parts. Sometimes a single person's ability is needed to lift a team that little bit higher.

When it comes to training, it's not always wise to assume that each player needs the same motivation, the same physical stimulation. Everyone is different, and by focussing on that, a good manager will be able to get the best out of his entire team.

Listen as Rob relates his own experiences in this regard, and discusses how the most successful teams have managed to get the best out of the whole, by focussing in on the needs of the individual. Along with this, Rob also shares some of the secrets that can help you get the best out of not just the player, but also yourself.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Coaches and their staff are as interested in the capabilities and gifts of individual players, as they are in the capabilities and gifts of an entire team. It would be foolish to think that entire teams are trained and enhanced by the same methods.
  • Fitness coaches and managers will assess the needs of each player and adjust their training and wellbeing accordingly. This leads to greater enhancements to the team in the long run.
  • It's better to spend time in deep focus that try to stretch out your work ethic to an unrealistic amount. Spending four to six hours per day at a task can, in a lot of cases, be far more beneficial
  • Focussing on smaller incremental successes is a far more valuable training tactic than shooting for the moon from the outset. Smaller successes upon smaller successes are what make the bigger wins possible.
  • It's a human instinct to feel like giving up when you hit a brick wall, but if you stick at something long enough, through the dark days and the grey night, remember, you are on your own hero's journey. It is up to you to inspire you.

BEST MOMENTS

‘The reality of life, as it often is, is very different from how it appears in the media'

‘If you want to be successful, you've got to put the hours in. You've got to put the days in'

‘Try to put your workdays in perspective. Four hours of deep focus is far more useful than twelve hours of unfocused work'

‘It's the incremental, compounded changes, those positive things that add up and add up, and get you to the next level'

‘If you reach a plateau, don't worry about it, don't stress about it, just look at where you are, work consciously and in a focussed way at how you can reach the next level'

‘You are on your own hero's journey'
