Episode description

‘Everybody needs a hero, someone to look up to, as a child I watched a figure in a red shirt orchestrate a phenomenal victory in an FA cup final'

Who do you influence and are you influencing them in the right way?

Rob explores how as leaders, managers and coaches we influence others. He discusses some of the most significant influencers in sport and how they have created teams with resilience and the drive to be the best they can be, listen in to hear more.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If you are a coach, leader or manager then you are an influencer. It's often our shortcomings that make us take a step back and review how we influence others and facilitate their progress or hold them back.
  • Being an influencer is not always about being verbal being present and having a supportive aura is often what is needed. The calmness and ability to soothe a situation as a supporter can be the most important resource.
  • There is so much more to people than we actually think and know. It is only time that provides the opportunity to get to know people. If we had this opportunity we would be better placed to make a more informed decision.
  • It's really important that we get to know our players and the people who are influencing them.
  • The more of the back story you have the more you understand who is influencing the young people you are working with.
  • The more you understand their support network the better the chance you have of working successfully with that person as an influencer.
  • There is only you with your characteristics and your influences, the only thing you can do is be the very best you, you can be.
  • It can be very challenging to stop trying to be like other people and be confident in being the best version of you.
  • You can only be the best you by being yourself. You can admire others and look to develop skills that match theirs but ultimately the whole thing is about you with the many facets that make up being you.

BEST MOMENTS

‘It might be running on a cold wet Tuesday night through puddles and dimly lit streets on your way to your personal victory'

‘He focused all his life on achieving what he believed in being celebrated as an outstanding coach was a by-product'

‘It's a constant feedback process, aiming to get better and improve. Sometimes it's no words at all, sometimes it's your body language'

‘He didn't focus on results only on performance, character and doing the best you could at the time'
