You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI AM six forty. KFI AM six forty is Later with Mo Kelly. We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app and of course joining me right now as always on a Monday evening as Jackie Ray. Jackie Ray is good to see you, good to talk to you. It's good to see you too. Good to be here. There's a lot that went on at the Kia Forum in Inglewood last night.
People may not know Inglewood has a lot of sports and entertainment venues. You got Sofi Stadium, you got the into a Dome opening next month or so. And you got the Kia Form which used to be the Great Western Forum which the Lakers played and when it became a church and then they turned it into a performance venue, but it is now turned into a premiere venue where you have events like the Tom Brady roast, which was live on Netflix last night. I got to see bits and pieces of it, but there were
some moments which jumped out at me. You had Bill Belichick was there, obviously, Tom Brady was there. You had all these comedians and sports figures that were roasting Tom Brady. I didn't know much about Tom Brady's personality, but I got a sense now that he has some degree a sense of humor, just a little bit of sense of humor. Yeah, yeah, what did you think of Tom Brady? Big picture? In and around this event? I really like this for Tom Brady because I've been saying for years now
that Tampa Tom. I like Tampa Tom because Tampa Tom seemed like he was coming out of his shell a little bit. He wasn't this square bear that we saw in New England. He would crack jokes with reporters a lot. I've had the privilege of seeing him up close and personal when I've gone to watch the Vegas Aces play, and as you guys might know, he's become he has an ownership stake in the Aces, so you can see him joking around with people. But for the most part, I think you're right,
that's just not a side of him that he really shows a lot. So I thought this was a great moment for people to see, Yes he's human, Yes he can take a joke, he can give a joke. He's just an all in normal dude, which is not something we really attribute to Tom Brady. So I thought this was great. It was fun. Kevin Hart was hosting. He was one of many comedians who had a turn at the mic, and one of the people he introduced was none other than Kim
Kardashian. And she came up. Was in the middle of trying to tell a Kevin Hart height joke when I guess the audience realized it was Kim Kardashian and it didn't go Overwhell listen to this. Watch how the mood of the audience changed inside of fifteen seconds. Well, I know a lot of people make fun of your mate, all right, Hi, why wha? All right, Kevin? A lot of booze. There a lot of booze. And let me say this about Kim Kardashian. And I've said it before and
I'll say it again. I can't knock the hustle what she's done to build her billion dollar empire. I can knock the fact that I can't find a discernible talent in all of this. She's famous, but I don't know anything that she does well in a performance or talent aspect outside of drawing her business. What am I missing here? Well, we're missing the same thing because I don't know what she does. I know she's kind of been the blueprint for like plastic surgery and things of that nature. I mean, is that
too much, No, but it's truth. It's the truth. She's the posted girl for that, so much so that we've literally seen this movement of people getting the Kim Kardashian face lift. It's literally a thing now. So aside from that, I don't know what she does. Even with the skims line that she has, she had no part in creating that. She just put her money behind someone else's idea. So I don't really know what talent she has, but kudos to her for being a talentless icon. She still,
though, was given the stage and the microphone. She even threw in an OJ joke talking about her connection to football players. She says something to the fact of, I don't want a definity football players anymore because my family's done enough of that, HARKing back to her father being part of the Dream Team. But even that joke wasn't delivered all that well. We know that
she has a lot of history with football players. I don't want to run the list, but the list is awful day I long, But big picture, what do you think about as we talk about going beyond the box score. I think this is a perfect illustration of how entertainment is interwoven with sports, social and cultural issues. You got an OJ reference, you have entertainment, you have sports, you have reality TV. Is this what entertainment is
going forward where there are no real partitions? Absolutely? I think one of the key points you and I have talked about this before too. The NBA is technically an entertainment entity more than it is a sports entity, and people forget that a lot of times. So a lot of times, a lot
of what you seeing the reason why we you go. One of the things that I absolutely despise is the next day after a Lakers game, if I have to report on it and I go to Getty Images, I have more images on Getty of the stars sitting courtside than I do the players at the game. Even with the WNBA, if a celebrity comes, that's the news of the day. Is this celebrity here? And it's because there's this overlap between what's entertaining and what's entertaining on a sports level, They're the same thing.
We're just being entertained in different ways. And so it made sense for her to be there. I know there were some rumors that the two of them were dating at one point, so it made sense for her. We still don't know that, and I think maybe that's why fans are doing They didn't want that Kardashian kurse to come out. But he's retired now, so it's fine. But it's definitely an overlap between entertainment and sports because they are
both essentially entertaining us. And we forgot what aspect of this streaming. You know, this was a Netflix live streamed event. Netflix has been dipping against tow in the water as far as live streamed events is started with Chris and his response to Will and Jada Smith. But I see that this is going to be more of a theme. Do you think people are open to Netflix is a live streaming entity. I think so. Netflix has done a great
job of having very specific programming that you can only see on Netflix. They've created a lot of programming that you can only see on Netflix. I only have a Netflix subscription because they have great horror films. So they're very good at dialing into very specific genres and very specific fan bases. And we like to see live events. People love to see live events. I think the next thing we're probably going to see from Netflix is live music events, because
that's the thing that's always going to get you. HBO has done an amazing job of getting those live music events and really getting fan bases that way. So Netflix is trying to stay ahead of the curve. Let's not forget they're the ones that put Blockbuster out of business, so they're just trying to stay ahead of the curve and stay relevant. My prediction was I thought they were
going to go further down the sports road. It seems like, well, it doesn't have to be mutual exclusive, it doesn't have to be one or the other. But I get the sense that they're growing this base of entertainment which is inclusive of sports, which eventually will lead to sports. There's been a lot of discussion about whether the NBA and they're broadcast rights will be purchased by T and T or NBC, which says to me there may be more
than one bidder in that war. And I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Netflix would swoop in because we've seen other non traditional entities, if you will, like Twitter and Amazon, you know, get into that sports field. So why not Netflix? Could you see Netflix also doing sports? I can absolutely see Netflix doing sports. There's no reason for it not to because it is, it has the platform to do it, and it's a win win.
One of the things I tell people all the time is some of the shows that I've watched for years, I ended up watching because it came on right after the Super Bowl. So when you have something big in a sports world, those fans are already there, so they're going to roam around this platform and find other content to work that they might not normally watch if you didn't have the sports venue on there. So I think it's a big deal for Netflix to get, you know, like you said, dip their toe
on that. I have been a champion for them holding the WNBA for years because the WNBA just doesn't get enough coverage. Netflix is an easy fix for that. So I definitely think they will do this going forward. When we come back. I think I saw the literal end of the career of basketball
player Patrick Beverly not once but twice. On the court when he threw the ball at a spectator it hit a different spectator, and off the court when he shunned a female reporter for not subscribing to his podcast, no joke. I gotta get your thoughts on that, Jackie Ray, when we come back. You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI AM six forty. I Am six forty is a letter with Moe Kelly. We're still going
beyond the box score and we're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Jackie I teased it before the break. I said, Patrick Beverly, who's played with just about everybody in the NBA, from the Lakers to the Clippers to you know, everywhere else. He was at the moment on the Milwaukee Bucks. They were in a playoff series, which they eventually lost to the Indiana Pacers.
What happened during this series was there was a fan I guess the ball had gone out into the stands and a fan threw the ball back on the court in the direction of Patrick Beverley. Patrick Beverley caught it and rifled it right back at the fan, but it hit a woman right next to him. That was problem number one. Then after the game, I guess you know, he sits down in this gaggle of reporters in the locker room. You've been in that. I have been in that, we know what it's
like. And then there was a woman, female reporter standing right next to him, and then out of nowhere, she wasn't even talking to him. He says to her, are you subscribed to my podcast? Listen to what Stephen A. Smith of ESPN had to say, how he broke it down and also so what happened in those moments? We can't avoid the subject involving Patrick Beverly, who let his frustrations out as he threw a ball twice into
the crowd late in the Buck season and then lost to the basers. Beverly initially threw a ball into the stands that hit a woman by the way, who didn't appear to be his intended target, so it's fair to say that, but he hit in the head. When another fan tossed the ball back to him, he responded by throwing it hard at that fan, which means that's who he was originally targeting to begin with. In a post on x, Beverly wrote quote, I have to be better. After a video of
the incident circulated online and after the game things got worse. He made more ways by refusing to address a reporter because she does not subscribe to his podcast. There was a couple of chances this game, like many of the others, where within a bucket of possession here, I'm sorry, you subscribe to my pot so you can't interview me? Then noout disrespect, subscribe okay,
cool again. There were a couple times within a bucket or two in previous kims yell been it would kind of get over that humber maybe was it anything they did in particular? Was it just one of those where the bucket didn't go down? There wasn't a stop they made one? What kind of prevented that? You all from me able to get over it? Like you haven't st move that might please? Or just get out the circle please for me, please, ma'am if you're not subscribed to my pod, I appreciate that.
Thank you. I think they played really well at home. Did you hear the part where Patrick Beverly said no disrespect at the beginning? No, nothing but disrespect there he only asked the female reporter, have you subscribed to my podcast? How can I take this any other way? There's no other
way you can take it. I'm really kind of surprised at the reporter that was asking the question about the buckets, and because I immediately would have redirected, and I immediately would have said, why is it that that's a prerequid that a reporter has to be subscribed to your podcast in order to interview you?
I would that would have been the only question at this point, because now you're making this a prerequisite, like you said, for just the woman, And why did you feel that, even if that was his idiosyncrasy wait till she asked you a question? Why are you going to interrupt this reporter's question to call out this woman? So now you're embarrassing her, and and now you're just showing your whole behind, Like what was the purpose of this? It makes no sense. I said at the beginning, you've been in
that gaggle like that. I've been a gaggle like that. I know what that dynamic is. Like you're hoping to get one question in so you can get your exclusive audio for your outlet, and we're all at varying levels in our career. The TV people usually get their questions first, The well known radio people get their questions that maybe you might get something. At the end, I get the sense that she was not high on the total poll and so she needed to get her audio and he singled her out for no damn
reason. I have zero respect for Patrick Beverley because I know what it's like being in that Absolutely. I cannot tell you how many times I've been. Just recently, I've been in that situation. And then you're excited when spectrum because Spectrum is the biggest cover footage for the WNBA. So you're excited when the spectrum reporter is not there because now that means you have a chance of
getting a question in. But when they walk in, it sucks the energy out of the room because you know they it's always spectrum first, and there's no time limit. They can ask as many questions as they want, and then if the player or the coach is ready to go, they're just ready to go. And you didn't get a question in, And so I think it's disrespectful because you don't appreciate one how hard it is to be in that
circle. Not only not wondering if you're getting the question, but now you've got your questions in your head and if they do pick your last, somebody probably don't ask your question three different ways, So now you have to figure a different question. So there's a lack of respect for the profession when you just dismiss someone like that. And Patrick Beverly should know better. He's the first one to demand a level of respect. So how dare you not show
respect and return? This was ridiculous. I wish and I'm glad you highlighted it. I wish someone else would have pointed it out in the moment. Someone else should have had something to say. It's like, hey, Patrick, I haven't subscribed to your podcast. I'm not sure anyone else has either. Can we still interview? Make him go on the record, make him have to stand behind why he only asked a female reporter who had not asked
him a question yet? Right right? She was just standing there holding her mic and then to physically push her mic out of the circles physically, physically. That is ridiculous. So now you're saying she cannot only not ask you a question, she can't get audio from other people who are She still has a job to do regardless of what your ego is saying. She still has to report on what happened in some of your responses. So I don't really
understand his thinking, But for him to. She said that he came back in and apologized. That's fine for him to post on Twitter. I have to be better, that's fine. I have difficulties, and maybe this is my shortcoming. I have difficulties giving any kind of credit to that, because there's no part of me that in that moment would have thought I need to be dismissive of this woman and physically push her microphone out the way. How do you not know in that moment that this is a this is bad behavior?
Well, Ken, how am I supposed to respect your apology afterwards? Well, clearly ESPN agrees with you, because they said he has been banned from any future appearances on ESPN. I applaud ESPN doing that on the back end, but on the front end, her colleagues, her peers, her contemporaries in that moment should have done better and they should have known better. Absolutely, there's no way I'm going to see somebody that is in the same profession as I am, whether I know them personally or not, see them
be disrespected and then I have the mic. I have an opportunity to say something, and I don't. You're culpable at that point, and I don't like that. How many times has that happened when the cameras didn't catch it? How many times did that happen? And he just didn't verbalize it, but was equally as dismissive and refused to take certain questions or treat him another
way. Similarly, I have to believe that that's not the first time, the only time, or even the last time that something like that happened, and that would make the reporter's response makes sense because he didn't even miss a beat. He was like, Okay, this is Pat Bev doing this thing back to my question, and there was no indication that he was mortified at all, which means this is a regular occurrence. It's a shame, but as they say, it's just Tuesday right in America, Right, Jack Ray,
It's always good talking to me. Thank you for coming on. Thank you you're listening too. Later with Moe Kelly on Demand from KFI AM six forty SNL. It's hit and miss. We all probably agree. Sometimes it's funny. Many times it's not funny. But every once in a while, if you're really paying attention and you know some history, you might find a hidden gym in it. I think I found a hidden gym with a skit which was done between other cast members and Keenan Thompson. But Keenan highlighted the
complexity of the campus protests and how there's a generational difference. Let me back up and explain to you what I mean. When my parents went to college, they went to Howard University in Washington, d C. It's a historically black college university in Washington, d C. And when they went it was at the height of the civil rights movement late fifties turning early sixties. My mother even was a classmate of someone you made know the name of Stokely Carmichael.
He was a leader in the civil rights movement. He's a leader of SNAKE, which is a student nonviolent coordinating committee, is one of the leaders in Pan African movement. I sailed that to say on Howard University's campus and around the country different colleges. It was at the height of the civil rights movement, and there was this push poll as far as whether you're going to
get involved or not. But also it was still during segregation as they were trying to fight for the Civil Rights, Civil Rights Act and also the Voting Rights Act. The Civil Rights Act, to make a long story short, would have opened up society where kids like me later on could go to Georgetown University. Georgetown University only had maybe two or three black kids in the late
fifties. Their first black student graduated in nineteen fifty three. I use that as a premer because when my parents got out of college and they finished their master's degree, it was right around the passage of the Voting Right to Act. Growing up, my sister and I we were told, you all are going to go to college. Do not mess off your education. Education was the most important thing in my household. That's something I carry with me and
passed on to anyone see who's a young person. Keep that in mind because when I went to college at Georgetown University and Mark Ronerd you may know something about this. During my freshman year, there was a clan march in Maryland, and I was a freshman. I said, I gotta go see this. And I was back by militant days where we were going to counter protests against the Klan. And I mean this was four clan regalia robes, the
cross banners, Confederate flags, the whole shebang. But my father, I remember he told me is that you go be careful, but don't do anything to mess up your education. Do not. So there's a general disconnect where my parents growing up in the Civil rights movement they understood how important that the movement was to making sure education was available to everyone everywhere, and subsequent generations where you may feel the need to protest but don't do anything to mess off
your future opportunities or your own education. With all that as a precursor, now listen to this bit where you have the Saturday Night Live cast member asking Keenan Thompson about his own daughter protesting and whether he's okay with it. Alphons, your daughter must feel so supported when she's out there. Was that? Now, when who's daughter is out there at the protest? No? No, no, no, man, you bugging Alexis Vanessa Roberts better half her
button class? Let me find out she ain't one of them damn tents instead of the dorm room that I pay for. I thought you were in favor of the student protest, brother, man, I am supportive of y'all's kids protesting, not my kids. My kids. No better shoot, Alexa's Vanessa ain't crazy. Well, I'll fond your daughter attends Columbia. What do you think about the students that took over Hamilton Hall. That's good for y'all's kids, but they ain't mine. That's all I'm saying. They ain't my kids.
You feel me right, yes, I feel you out fond. But tell me, with the rising attendance in these protests, how does it make you feel to see the increase in police presence? Man, I ain't worried about five Oh, that is not my business. My business is Alexis Vanessa Roberts. Okay, she ain't talking about no free. This is free that because I tell you what ain't free Columbia. So there's so much truth in
that. There is so much truth in that because I know, and I say this very proudly, I know my parents took out a second mortgage on the house to make sure my sister and I could go to college. I know that there was no way in the world that I would do anything to put my education in jeopardy. Did that sound kind of selfish? Possibly? But the generational expectation was our generation, as in my parents' generation. They made it very clear we sacrificed, we struggled so you could go to these
institutions of higher learning. The last thing you're going to do is mess off your education, lose your scholarship, or do something in which you're going to get kicked out, or or you know, just make move the whole point of taking out that second mortgage. And I remember to Wally, you and I were having a similar conversation last week, and you can tell as much
or as little as you want. Do you remember we were talking about how your parents had a a i'll say, a similar but different expectation of you. Yes. No, they My mother definitely wanted me to go to college, but also understood my aversion to it and actually my artistic leanings. Looking at these protests, I do remember my mother's days in the revolution, you know, out there protesting and things like that. But but but she finished
school, she got her degree. She was not messing around most everyone within that power struggle back then, they still knew, damn show that they need to get their degrees. Me I may not have gone to college, but I can promise you this, My son, who will be graduating high school within the next few weeks or so, he will be and if he involves himself in any of these processes. I will have him. I will go down there and get him myself. Don't worry about the police and the zip
ties. I will be down there myself to get him. That's why I thought this Saturday Night Live bit was so insightful. I don't know if everyone really picked up on it. Yes, they got the humor like you're not my child. But there is a generational conversation in that where I'm paying for
this, I can't afford for you to not get your degree. It's different when if you're on scholarship or something, or say if you're a trust fund kid, and you don't have to worry about that, but when you have parents who have really worked hard, and this may be you may be the first or like, for example, my father was the first person in him college in his family to go to college, the first person, and my mother she was like, you know, twenty fifth. But my father came
from very, very meager beginnings. He grew up in the projects in Lynchburg, Virginia. His mother didn't even want him to go to college. She thought it was a fool's errand and it was a waste of time. He was the first one to go to college, so you damn sure knew that I was not going to mess around at some protests trying to yell at the KKK, get arrested, get kicked out of school, and didn't have to
deal with him. No, sir, No, sir ree no, you know for a fact, you and I we sat in these studios watching this all the tells thinking of himself. That wouldn't have been me. That would have been me. It would not be my kids, for a fact. Those are young kids down there right, my kids, my father. And I'm not disrespecting the reasons for the protests. I'm saying that there are these conversations which are going on in households, especially African American households right now,
right now. And I know if I were one of those on TV, and your parents can always recognize you. You know, you can try to cover yourself up, but your mama knows what you look like. Regardless, if I were recognized in one of those protests, my father would have gotten on a plane, gone to Washington, d C. Whooped my ass, got back on the plane, came back to LA and then would have said bring your ass home. You know, it's interesting, you know who we
have not seen getting arrested or out there processing or any of that. The UCLA Valedictorian or the usc She has not been the news arrested. Okay, she has not. That says a lot. I'm not saying, but I'm just saying. You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI AM six forty I AM six forties Later with mo Kelly. We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. And I'm just gonna say this right now, there's no way we're going to get through this segment. It's going to end prematurely.
