You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI AM six forty. I Am six forty. It's Later with Mo Kelly. We are alive everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Let's Go Beyond the box Score with Jackie Ray. Jackie Ray, good evening. How you doing tonight? I'm doing great.
Thank you for having me. The boxing match between former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and Jake Paul has been postponed from its original July twentieth date because Mike Tyson allegedly, when I say allegedly, the reason allegedly had to do with his medical scare on a flight to Los Angeles. It was later identified as an ulcer flare up. People can't see my air quotes. But what do you think of first the idea of the fight, and also second this postponement,
not a cancelation, but a postponement. You know, I thought this fight was a terrible idea from day one. I just don't think that Mike Tyson at this point in his life, has anything to prove, and especially with Jake Paul, I just he's so infuriating to me on every way possible. He's not a boxer in the sense because he never ever challenges boxers in their
primes. He's always getting people outside of their prime. And even with the Floyd money Mayweather fight, if you argue that that fight was fake, I would agree with you because there was a moment where Floyd could have finished him and he didn't. So none of this appeals to me as a person who truly enjoys the sport of boxing, because it just doesn't have that level of authenticity that would make it feel like, Okay, this is something that I
want to see. But I also understand that Mike Tyson has had problems financially throughout his entire career and not spending his money properly. I believe he's getting a ten million dollar payout on this. His net worth right now is only ten million dollars, So if you can double your net worth, I get it. But from a boxing standpoint, I'm just not excited about this.
I don't begrudge Mike Tyson for taking a paycheck. I don't begrudge anyone from going ahead and accepting a pay day, but I do begrudge when I'm being sold so thing other than what it is. And to your point, it feels like I'm looking at something which is more WWE than an actual boxing match. But at least with WWE, I know what I'm looking at. I know it's scripted entertainment, and I don't know, and I highly suspect the
motivations and the presentations of Jake Paul. But there is something else I wonder, big picture, whether we are more interested in the circus than actual athleticism. Absolutely, because it's not what are we talking about right now? Is a thirty year age different? Yes, he would be fifty eight if and when this bout were to take place. That is asinine. You don't have any respect for the sport if you say I want to fight a fifty eight year old. And then he tweeted out he was like, and when I
win, it's going to be the biggest win. Not technically it's elder abuse and you should be charged if you win, you know what I mean, Because this is just ridiculous. If you want us to take us you seriously, then have serious fight. Because he's presenting and that's the thing that really infuriates me. He's presenting himself as a as a person who trains a real boxer, but he's not giving us real fights, and that's a problem for
me. And I'm not beyond the exhibition or the spectacle of different people from different sports, you know, coming together. Ali fought the wrestler, and I know that this is not new, but there are a lot of people who will put his way. To your point, Jake Paul wants to position himself and present himself as a legitimate boxer, well, I'm looking through legitimate boxer eyes sports historian. I need him to actually fight legitimate boxers who are
under the age of forty. I'm fifty. I'm talking about under the age of forty, and then we can start having that conversation. But you know, I'm not gonna hate the game. I am hating the player because, oh absolutely. The ATV used to do that thing back in the day where celebrities would fight and we would all tune in celebrity boxing matches, celebrity boxing. We all thought that was funny, it was great. We didn't care
who won. To your point, we tuned in for the circus. If we're watching a circus and we know that there's going to be a type rope back and people are there to entertain us and that's it. That's all we will tune in for that. He doesn't have to do this song and dance and like, oh yeah, look at me, I'm a real boxer. Because you would really have to not know anything about the sport of boxing to
be taking Jake Paul seriously. Here's something else. I am concerned that someone like Mike Tyson or an Evander Holyfield who looked really bad in his spout, or someone else who's pushing sixty may die in the ring. And you know, and that's the thing that when he said he had an ulcer flare up, it's like, okay, Mike, was it an ulcer flare up?
Or is this something more serious or did he have anything at all? But I do believe with his age, the things he's put his body through, obviously we know what happens with the mind and the brain when you're talking about boxing. Did he downplay it as my concern because at the end of the day, you don't have to ever set foot in a boxing ring ever in your life. You hit fifty seven, things just don't work the same.
So why would you jeopardize your well being and take a hit, Because that would be terrible for us to sit here and know that this isn't a row boxing match, and Jake Paul get that one hit in the right place at the right time, and now we don't have a world with Mike Tyson in it anymore. Why it's not worth it to me. I'm not going to diagnose Mike Tyson from a distance. I am going to speak on what I do know about his public life. I know that he's used marijuana and smoked
it for many, many years. I do know the connection between smoking and also heart issues. I do know that he is fifty seven, almost fifty eight years old. He turns fifty eight this month. And I do know, as you said, that the body doesn't work like it used to twenty or thirty years ago. I do know that I'm not stupid, and an ulcer mid flight from the people that I do know who have ulcers doesn't necessitate that type of response. Yeah, and it doesn't necessitate a doctor following up
and saying, hey, you're in a situation. This has to be postponed. I can't tell you to win. That's a that's a more serious health condition. When the doctor has to say we need to take some more tests, we need to reevaluate you. We need to see what's going on. Ulcer suck. I know people who have them, they suck, But this isn't a situation where this is a medical scare. Is how I saw it phrase, it's a this is a flare, a flare up and a scare.
If and when it comes out what this is or is not when I say this the whole Jake Paul persona, and let's not forget he just did a big deal with WWE, that even more makes it feel like this is scripted entertainment, not an actual athletic event. But what if it comes out that it is scripted on some level? What does it do for the legacy of the fighters who got in the ring with them? I'm not so sure you like with Tyron, would leave getting knocked out, air quotes and all
that. What does it do for the sport of boxing, because some people think it is actual boxing. And what does it do for the perception and persona of Jake Paul if it comes out that, yeah, this is scripted for anyone who's paying attention, it doesn't do anything for the persona of Jake Paul. Again, because real boxing fans don't view him as a real boxer. These people who live behind rose colored glasses and believe whatever he's telling them.
It might affect things for them, but not for the rest of us, but for the sport of boxing. The sport of boxing desperately needs that fighter that has that big name, like the Mayweathers, like the Mike Tysons. So for them to get in the ring with this fake boxer really does water down the actual sport of boxing, and I think they need to stop doing that. I think it needs to be Let boxers be boxers. Let entertainers be entertainers. Yes, we're entertained when we see you box, but
you're an athlete. You're more than just an entertainer. Let Jack Paul be the entertainer YouTube guy that he is is. Boxers need to box, and let's manage our money better so we don't have to jump in the ring with some YouTuber because he's given us ten million dollars. Let's do that, agreed. When we come back, let's talk about golfer Robert McIntyre, who, in winning his first PGA Tour event, basically had to cuss out the drone
which was hovering over his multiple golf shots. Like a loud person in the gallery. Let's talk about the future of drones and sports. When we come back, it's Later with Mo Kelly. Here if I AM six forty, We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI AM six forty. We're continuing to go beyond the box Score and we're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app with Jackie Ray. Before the
break, Jackie Ray, I told you about Robert McIntyre. He won his first PGA Tour event, the RBC Canadian Open, but throughout the event, on multiple occasions he let it be known publicly. He basically looked into the drone camera and complained about the noise, interruption and distraction from that hovering drone.
If you've ever been around them, they're not completely silent. We all know if you've ever attended a golf tournament, not even a PGA Tour event, just a golf tournament, your ass is supposed to be completely silent. As a member of the gallery, how do we reconcile the fact that we have a piece of machinery which is impacting golfers and the etiquette of golf more generally no noise. You know, I'm a Happy Gilmour fan. That movie
was fantastic to me. If you don't know Happy Gilmour, this is a basically he kind of took hockey type fandom into the world of golf and it was absolutely fantastic. And I think golf needs something like these drones. This drone is necessary to give I'm not a big golfing fan. I watch when Tiger would play, but other than that, I don't really watch golf. But something like that where I can get in the action and I can see
it directly. The the game needs that. I was looking yesterday and I saw that across each tournament, view viewership is down twenty to thirty percent. People are losing interest. We like to be loud, we like to cheer for it. So at least give us an inside view and we'll do these little quiet, little golf collaps, you know, at home. But those those drones don't make enough noise in my opinion, because I've flown when I've crashed a few, but I've flown a few drones as well. You're to
your point. They're not absolutely quiet, but they do give you an amazing view, especially if you know how to fly them properly. They give you a view of the game that you're not going to see even if you're at the tournament. And I think when you're talking about getting viewership up, you have to give something more visual. So I think players just need to get used to it. It's not that loud where it's gonna throw everything off. I agree with you, but I also understand the rub. We know that
golf is one of the last professional sports. Let me just say, I don't want to piss anyone off. It's a game, but I found a professional sport. It's one of the last professional sports to adopt technology. From soccer to even professional tennis. There are a hockey, baseball, basketball. There is all sorts of technology in the game, and also coverage of the game T and t. They'll take you different angles from watching a game with
or without announcers into the lock of all that. Golf has never had it or embraced it. So I understand how the network wants to broaden viewership, the golf game wants to stay the same. How do you meet in the middle. I don't think you meet in the middle. I think you have to move forward full stop on that. I think if you want these tournaments to be able to continue to play out these massive amounts of money and prize money, then viewership is part of that. You get money from viewership,
and you also want to inspire younger fans. Younger fans are shooting entire movies right now on their phone. You can't give them this wax standard view and think you're going to get younger viewership. And I think if your goal is to make golf last into the future, you kind of have to meet the times a little bit. I'm not saying adopt everything. You don't need the NFL pendulum, swinging camera that gets a whole view, you don't need any of that, But you do need to move forward and let the fans see
the game in a way they've never seen it before. That makes it more interactive, makes it more intriguing, makes him feel more connected to it. Let's be honest, haven't you at least wondered if and when one of these drones or even one of those swinging cameras on the zip line was just going to fall in the middle of a field or middle of an NFL game,
because it seems like they're getting closer and closer to the actual play. Let me tell you, when I went to see the Rams play last season, I sat right by you know that camera that's on that zip line thing. I sat right by that zipline, and the entire game I was terrified that that zipline was gonna snap in like final destination our whole row of people. So I was terrified at that because it doesn't seem strong enough. And to your point, it gets so low in the middle of the game, and
I'm just like, at some point it's going to hit. Somebody's going to do some wild, crazy jump to go intercept the ball, and it's gonna whack him in the head. I have wondered that this entire time. I'm hoping that people who are more technologically savvy than me have considered these types of things and have made sure that won't happen. But to your point, yes, I've always wondered. But I love like we were saying. I love
the expanded views. I love feeling as if I'm in the game. I love the helmet cam on a batter and to see one hundred mile an hour fastball come at me. I love where you have the camera on the floor in basketball games where it's running court level alongside the players. I love all of that, and yes it will bring in younger viewership, but I do empathize with players because I don't want any of this to impact the play. I don't want any of this to somehow change the type of play. I
mean, I guess I have to say it's the same thing. I don't want to offend anyone, but when you're talking, you don't. I mean, it's a game more than it's a you know what I mean, Like, it's just a game. Because when you're talking about football, basketball, these types of where you have this athletic prowess, they also have to compete against playing away and being in arenas and stadiums where fans are trying to impact the game. And when fans aren't able to do that, that's a testament
to the athleticism of the people on the court or on the field. Get your mind game right. It's not that bad. Get your mind right, you'll be fine. All right. Well, Jackie Ray has spoken. She's host of the Jackie Ratio. What are you talking about this week on Jackie Ratio? Well, I'm so excited because this week I have Olivia Nelson Ododa. She plays for the Connecticut son She's a center for them, so I'm
talking to her. But I'm also going to touch on this Caitlin Clark situation between Kennedy Carter and Caitlyn Clark and why people need to just take a step back and enjoy basketball. It's just basketball. Unless you're new to it, you never watched it before, and they seem strange to you. You're like, what's happening. It's Later with mo Kelly. You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI AM six forty. Let's talk about super Freak,
The Rick James Story Broadway in Hollywood. The Pantageous Theater and Cicarius Entertainment are pleased to announce that the Hollywood Pantagious Theater in LA will host the LA premiere of Super Freak, The Rick James Story about the charismatic, flamboyant, provocative musician who dominated the airwaves with his infectious song super Freak and Others.
When you get to the others in just a moment, Rick James's fusion of funk, groove and rock made the unruly pioneer, the trendsetter of the nineteen eighties, Super Freak will play the Hollywood Pantagious Theater June sixth through June eighth, as in just this week for four performances only. It's going to be touring all around the country, but only in LA this week into the weekend.
Tickets for super Freak are available for purchase at Broadway Inhollywood, dot com, in person at the Hollywood Pantagious Theater box office, or here on later with Mo Kelly. But before we give these tickets away, just want to give you some context and perspective. Rick James was a huge artist, specifically within the African American community. Back in the day. You would listen to him on stations like fifteen eighty K Day. He was not a household name.
He was very much an artist who had a limited appeal in the late nineteen seventies. In the early nineteen eighties, when he did the song super Freak, it was such a massive hit and crossed over that more and more people outside the black community began to fall in love with Rick James. If you ever saw the video to super Freak with all the women and everything, it was a low rent video, don't get me wrong, but it put Rick James on the map in the way that he had never had that level
of success. If you had listened to Rick James very early in his career, if I said songs like Fire and Desire, you would know what I'm talking about. If I talked about his musical relationship and actual relationship with Tina Marie, if you were a Rick James fan back then, you would know who I was talking about. But it wasn't until Dave Chappelle parodied him on Chappelle's Show that everybody found out who Rick James was. The jokes that came out of that, I'm Rick James, Bob, you know, cocaine is
the hell of a drug. All those things going back to Rick James, who he was, or I should say, how people most knew about him was thanks to Chappelle's show, and he was parodied a number of times in movies, but they didn't specifically say it was him. If you've ever seen the movie Coming to America and you had this character that Eddie Murphy was playing by the name of Randy Watson, you could easily see that that was a direct takeoff on Rick James. His impact on popular culture is a lot larger
than people know. And I when I hopefully get a chance to see Super Freak, the Rick James story, you get to see some of all of that. His influence is far greater than most people know. Oh and also when mc hammer came on the scene, this is about maybe nineteen ninety ish, and he did the song Can't Touch This. It uses the sample of super Freak. That was a huge issue because one back then rappers were not
getting clearance for the sample. I remember I was an intern at Capitol Records and Rick James had sued and part of it was they said they actually I remember the vice president of an R sat down and told me the story, named Scott Folks in court. They asked to play Can't Touch This without the Rick James sample to see how much it was related to the song, and
it was tremendous. It was inarguable you couldn't have the song Can't Touch This without the Rick James sample of super free And so that was another way which people came to find out who Rick James and this music was his imprint. And I'll say impact on popular music is much greater than most people know, so this is why I'm so happy. Tomorrow night will be speaking to the star of Super Freak, The Rick James Story. And if you know the
name Stokely. Stokely Williams was the lead singer of a group called Mint Condition. Stokely is one of the most fabulous singers that I've known while working in the business. He and Mint Condition were at their peak when I was working in the business. Tuala at that the beat broke all their music, you know in La Stokely is a fantastic musician, singer, and probably someone who knows more about Rick James personally than most people because he was in the business
with Rick during Rick's heyday. That's tamorrow. But right now I'm looking at Twala. Are we gonna give away these tickets? Now? All right? What number? Someone tell me the number? Mark, give me a number. Talla says number seven. Okay, call her number seven. If you are caller number seven, you and a guest will be going to the La Premiere. This is opening night. You got to be able to go. June sixth, Opening Night, La Premiere, Super Freak The Rick James Story.
If you are calling number seven, you and a guest will be going to the Pantageous Theater here in LA to see Super Freak The Rick James Story. And let me just pick on Mark Ronner very quickly. I know you know Rick James because you're a music critic. When did you first discover Rick James. Oh, he's been just part of the background of our whole lives. People are agent, yes, No, I know, but people find him at different points. If you were only listening to pop music, you
may not have discovered him until you heard MC hammers. You can't touch this. I thought you were going to play it right then. I was ready for it. I was I was going to but you know, with the podcast, we can't play any music. No, you're right, you're right. And I don't recall Rick James wearing the kind of pants right, No, but no, Rick James still wore that tight leather when it wasn't as cool to wear it. I mean he was of a flamboyant yes personality,
he was. He was he musically was at the wrong time and Chappelle really captured it. Yes, he did. Yes, And that's what made it so great because Chappelle embodied him, and I don't everyone got the joke. Early on, I don't know they realized how spot on it was, or how much of an instrumental figure Rick James was in music. I'm trying to remember and tell me if I've got this wrong, But there was a time when Rick James was in rotation on MTV. Yes see it was super Freak.
Yeah, and it was incongruous with all the other stuff that was on there. Let's explain why, very early in MTV's evolution they did not play a lot of black artists. In fact, they were highly criticized by David Bowie right for not playing black artists. I didn't say black music, I said black artists, and MTV very very very slowly came around. You had. I guess maybe Michael Jackson was one of the first ones that actually played with any consistency. But also Rick James. Why super Freak was such a
freaking hit across the board. It was one of those songs even today, it's going to get played at just about every party that people over the age of forty go two. Well, one would hope so, and so that's why, oh true story, we saw this. I should say I saw this. I saw super Freak. The Rick James story being advertised on social media. They were just advertising, and I said, wait a minute, why did Why didn't anybody call me? The moment I saw the advertisement it
was on Facebook, I reached out to Twala. I said, Twala, just make it happen. But to play Rick James, no two, you make a good Rick James No to get Yeah, I mean I would want to see the wig on you though. No, that's no, that's not me, that's not I can't. I can't even do the movements of Rick James. I like his music and I've liked put it this way, My favorite Rick James songs are ones probably people haven't heard of. What do you suppose that wig's worth? That his actual wig? Oh, it's in some
museum. It's got to be in the Smithson's got to be. It's gotta be. But he was pre social media, and I wonder how big he would have been in a social media TikTok world. He was just twenty five years too soon. He would be a giant if he were alive today. Are you kidding me? Oh? He was Taylor made for social media. His personality, his style of dress, his music, sexually suggestive, all
of that electually suggestive. Okay, it was sexually it was gloriously filthy now and I don't even know if people even know he was singing about marijuana decades before anyone else. That song the bumper that I opened up with, I'm in love with Mary Jane. She's my main thing that's talking about marijuana, Mary Jane. He was doing that on the radio in the early nineteen eighties,
okay, any and he got away with it. Only folk We knew about it because it was slang in the black community back then, so we knew. It's like, put this way, would you have someone like Snoop Dogg. Don't disrespect to Snoop when he's saying that, you know Indo talking about Indo on the radio in the nineties, that was nothing because Rick James was so far ahead of everyone else singing about this type of subject on pop radio. Yeah, Snoop Dogg didn't invent weed on the radio. He's the
chief advocate for it at this point. He didn't invent it. No, and is one of those things where even this was before, like white lines, he was way ahead of people. Does the way to make you feel weird now at this age, how young Rick James was when he died. Was he like fifty two fifty six? Yeah, And unfortunately he did a lot of cocaine. He did a lot of cocat and he was very honest about that. He did a lot of cocaine. He died of a heart
attack, which I'm quite sure was connected to his cocaine abuse. In fact, if I remember correctly, his tosychology report listed cocaine and other drugs in the system. Not to disparage him, but just to be honest. And I think we have a winner twallat do we have a winner? Yes, we have a winner. Who is the winner? Carolyn Durant from Victorville, who says she is going to come all the way to La to the Pantagous because, as she said, yes, I grew up listening to Richard I
got this, I know his music. Well, why wouldn't I come to the Pantagious to see the show? I was out past Victorville yesterday. I was out in Palmdale and Lancaster, so I know that's a long drap. Are you coming to the Pantagious? Are you really trying too? Yeah? She's like, yes, all I can say is congratulations. I'm sure you will enjoy it. We'll talk to Stokely tomorrow here on the show. He'll give his insight, and I assume he has first hand memories of Rick,
probably interactions. I want to think we've crossed pass maybe at the Grammy's or something. I don't know. I can't remember. I have to sift through my pictures and see. But he was a character who's a personality. He was just way too soon in history, just way too soon.
