This is later with Lee Matthews the Lee Matthews Podcast. More of what you here weekday afternoons on the Drive. Patrick Doyle is a Scottish composer who has been nominated for an Oscar and scored several films including Murder on the Orient Express, Brave Thor, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, and many,

many, many more. He has had the distinction of being chosen by King Charles the Third to write his Coronation March for the upcoming coronation on May sixth, and well done, Patrick Doyle, Thank you mans to great to talk to. I'm I'm pretty fooled to be on your shoe and historic occasions. It is a historic and occasion and you're going to join the names of say Mozart, Beethoven, Vaughan Williams and many more who have written music for coronations.

Yes, and every minutes of great composers have gone before me. You mentioned some lines. They are also willing Walter and Elgar personal handle. So to be part of that incredible line of it Stragital is very humbling and extroberly and a great, great honor. Can you describe the composition for us, what was going through your mind when you were thinking of the music? Well, I was asked by King Charles for the piece to be triumphant, uplifting

and memorable. So these were the these additives that I was given and it had, and I was asked by the organization the abbey if it could be number than four minutes, because the days are very very carefully to find day with various things going on, so they take to be less of four minutes. But as I comminute three sixty five with five tickets for re reparation in the abbey, so it was setting near to declare about his well, King

King Charles's life, and it reflects aspects of his character. I would colletly and over to Mark in the it tells a story. They're very opening of its triumphant and it's full of pagan tray. And the second movement was moved forward at a pace and has a strong Celtic connection because I'm Scottish and reserved. Part of the mark is joyful and fun and full of casual fathers I hope you can hear. And the final movement is is reflective and romantic,

and those too, uh dramatic triumphant, climax student. Hopefully with these aspects represent aspects of his his character. For the matter. I've met many times over the years the greatest supportive of my career, Patrick Doyle, Scottish composer,

who is composed King Charles the Third's Coronation March. The coronation coming up on May sixth at Westminster Abbey. Yeah, that's a long abbey, so I guess four minutes is I mean, that's not unlike writing for a film score, where you actually don't you have the film up in front of you many times. Well, but the film spirit as you see, you have the imagery assive and the characters, well, you piece at this, you've

given a brief and you have to culture up your own imagery. But the abbey, obviously there's a there's a lot of there's a great peace to fill, and there's a long possession. Are many pieces of former moment. I believe the moment that the possession starts outside in the street and lot to sweet well the abbey and my piece of Cornition March how to be all of how he had placed the entrance of the promondealth prossession. So I'm very lay on

the appears at that point. And as far Patrick Doyle, who is the composer of King Charles the Third's Coronation March, as far as orchestration, are you utilizing any of the traditional instruments from some of these eras that you talked

about that come from the various parts of the United Kingdom. Suppose I suppose I'm using the organ because the the the auction will be in the law and it's a restricts to space, so you would have a huge symphonic officer that you would have on some light and part of the it's a very much reduced officer, but none may evil instruments as with the oldest instrument in the pass

physically as the argument, there's there's a rich opress obvious orchestra. So it was quite charge academic he details, but the slightly there's really three deals for example, that's a very technical the academic thing, but normally have a lot more than that in terms of a balance. So there's lots of something magic workment on with all of these people realnized to be part of it, and obvious to me this balance love be signed in this immitting building. Yeah,

the organ is enough anywhere. You can do anything with an organ, you can do with a symphony orchestra. But really end it's very much it comes up trumps the way and something part of the triumphant ending. No I was curious if there were any bagpipes or base loot or anything unusual like that. Oh no, Well I loved it, but I didn't feel there's still other visy musicians throughout the ut. It's they're children from these orchestras of the former

Prince of Wheels was the people. It's a little nice sort of business from

ending from Lan from where, from Scotland. So I'm always extremely present, a provis and honored that these people who spend so much time perfecting when clear music with tremendous custom and love and charactans and the affection with the extremely kind I had it over two years ago and enthusiasm and quotiously with outstanding Talking to Patrick Doyle, Scottish composer who has he scored a number of films like Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire Thor and many more, but he's been chosen

to compose King Charles. The thirds Coronation March coming up on May six, is when we'll get to hear it in Westminster Abbey. And you know the other exciting thing about this, Patrick, is that many of these pieces will go down in musical history. I mean there is Ralph von Williams, Oh Taste, NC, oh Taste, NC Harol, Gracia stand all this. I mean that's become that's become a staple in church music, and many of the coronation marches have become staples and weddings, so I imagine this will as

well. Well. I've been my pool that I've been involving to wonderful movies like Halli Potter and Pards, and I've built up an audience for these from schools and Quilthy the sea will happened with this peace certainly. I've made it hopefully to the bill, but also as accessible and contemporary and melodically. I think it's the bill, so I hope it will be wible to stand alongside these great predecessor predecessors to thunder cross Patrick style. Our fingers are cross.

Will be looking forward to hearing King Charles's Coronation March on May sixth, and we thank you for joining us, and again congratulations on the on being chosen thank you very much for a month.
