This is later with Lee Matthews the Lee Matthews Podcast more what You Hear weekday afternoons on the Drive. Dan and Reid Isbel, also known as the Brothers Hunt, started their work in Nashville as commercial songwriters, writing for the likes of Luke Calms, Darius Rucker, Miranda Lambert, Scotty McCreery, and many many more. But they just couldn't shake how much they love to get out
into the wild and do some hunting and fishing. So they've put it all together, their adventures and songwriting, their adventures with musicians in Nashville, and spending time in God's Country. That's the name of their podcast. It's available every week with episodes on the iHeartRadio app and anywhere you get podcasts. Dan and Reid Isabel Welcome Hunt Brothers. Hey, hey Man, good morning. How are you. Lee. Let's start with you. Dan. I'm doing
great. By the way, I am an enthusiast. What is your favorite rifle to hunt with and your favorite ammunition to use in it? Oh? Man, I am a right now currently on a six five three hundred kick whether he makes it and kind of have to special order the ammunition from it. Too. It's about I think it's one hundred and fifty grain bullet, super flat shooting gun and a lot of fun to have. It's loud though it's really wild. Well, it doesn't make a difference after you pull the
trigger, right, That's right, that's right. I just got to know where it is. Yeah, and read. How about you red dots sight or iron sight? Man. I'm usually a scope guy, but honestly, if I had my pick, if I if I had my pick, man, I would I would stick and string it to the day I die. I love. I love rifle hunting and love you know, sitting in a box line and being warm. But I also like to get out there where they where they're at and in their bedroom and try to get deer as close
as I can too with my bow in my hand. Ah. So God's Country. Let's talk about your weekly podcast. You guys talk a lot about hunting and fishing and music. Correct. It's just been a fun time for us to get to know songwriters and different artists that we share passions with and enjoy just talking about the woods, especially when it's this cold and you can't get out in it. We got some smew where we're at yeah, same here, same here. And you don't want to either, do you now?
A little too little too chilly for me? Man? And from a naturalist standpoint, read, there's something to be said. I mean this, this wild game is good for you, Oh dude. Is the only untouched meat there is out there. Man, It's exactly the way it was designed to be. And and uh yeah, I recently have two kiddos, and and and I'd much rather feed them, you know, unprocessed meat. And God, God's God's meet God's gross towards what what we like to call it
out Dan and read Isabel The Hunt. The Brothers Hunt God's Country is their podcast, and it's available on Apple podcasts and also on the iHeartRadio podcast. Dan, there's something about country musicians. I spent a lot of time in country radio, and most of the country musicians I encountered would just as soon
talk to the elevator operator in the White House as to the president. Yeah, it's a it's a lot more there's a lot more common ground with with those tops tops of folks, you know, and and and and I can't say that I don't disagree that that that's it's a lot of fun, just to get in there and talk with your with your common man as opposed to try to think of big words with with the big shots and read. I
find that they like just regular conversation. Yeah, I do too. I mean, like Dan said, they're you know, getting into these rooms with these guys and having these relationships, you find out how normal they all are and how they're upbringing is a lot like ours and a lot like everybody else's
that listens to these podcasts. Man, These these stories that these guys are telling, and the stories that we get to tell or are just stories are growing up and their stories of hometowns and you know, first trucks and first deer and all that. Man. And like Dan said, you find a foundational you know, topic and some common ground there and you get into some good conversation. Dan. The songwriting process, how does it start with you?
Where do you draw inspiration or does inspiration draw you? Well, honestly, it can go a bunch of different ways. For me personally, I like to draw from my own experiences, and I mean that could be twenty years ago, that could be ten minutes ago. It can really go either way. There are other times when a specific hook might catch you that that someone said, whether it be my dad or or or who knows whoever. The people that I talked to occasionally say things that I think, man,
that would that would make a pretty great song. And sometimes you can build on that. But I personally like to to put in some sort of percentage of life of my own life in there in order to make it relative. You know, you find where read said, you find out a lot of people take the same kind of steps that you take, and uh, it's fun to communicate in that way. They are outdoor enthusiasts. The brothers Hunt also music writers for country musicians like Luke Colmbs, Darius Rucker, Miranda Lambert,
Scotty McCreery, Drake White, and many more. For you read when does Melody come to the party? Uh? From the from the jump leek, that's kind of that's kind of my I think everybody has strong suits and I like to say that. You know, I'm a I'm a triple threat writer. I can kind of do it all and do melody. I can do a lyric and I can put it to a guitar. But honestly, man, I've been singing since I was since I could talk, and and
just the melodic thing in my brain never turns off. And and that's that's where I that's where my that's my starting point, it's my jumping off point. And I go, I go looking for a good strong melody before I go looking for anything else. God's Country is the podcast, and it's the brothers Dan and read Isabel weekly podcasts available everywhere you get podcasts. And it's
the intersection of country music and the great outdoors. So Dan, care to share maybe one of the stories you heard from one of your friends in the country music business that stands out in your mind. Well, for me, me and well, Me and Reed and Luke uh Combs have all been have been buddies, and I guess I just have to name drop in order to tell the story. Sorry, I'll pick that up later. But uh we
were. We do a lot of hunting fishing together and even years before this podcast ever started, and h Luke and I were hunting together and he reached in his bag and he pulled out a knife. He said, have I ever told you the story of this knife? And I said, no,
you hadn't. Then he he handed it to me. He said, my uncle gave me that ten or fifteen years ago, and I was looking it over and it was a you could tell it was a well crafted, you know, strong knife, and I flipped it over and told me, h, they call it the tang, which is actually like the spine of the knife engraved in it where the words found yours. And I was like, man, what a cool what a cool? Say? Have you ever seen this? He was like, dude, I have literally never seen that on
my knife. He said. He's like, I didn't even know that existed. And I was like, man, that's a great song, Tital. And so we ended up writing a song that made the record called You Found Yours, which was about you know. I think the first versus Remy was a pit mix. She was just skinning bones and the daddy found an deep ditch on his way home and so and that's an actual that's an actual story, and it was inspired from a from a true thing on mom, He's
gotten a knife. So just seeing those little lottoks fall out and literally kind of land in your lab is is is pretty cool. Read that's the difference between you guys and me. When I was given an heirloom knife of my father in laws, I turned it over only to see the Nazi symbol and embedded on it. Yeah. I can't write a song about that one. No, no, It turns out it was a bayonet that he had acquired at an antique store in Germany when he was stationed there in the Air Force.
But I was worried for about ten I was worried for about ten seconds, Dad, are you tell me something? God's Country is the name of the podcast, Dan and read Isabel. The Brothers hunts and they do, and they talk about it with some of their favorite country stars on their weekly podcast, God's Country.
