Look man, oh, I see you? Why why? Oh? And look over there? How is that culture? Yes? Goodness, dongst culture? Seventh well day, the seventh day of culture. We're finishing out the first week, or we're starting the second week. It's second half of days of culture. See, here's the deal. If you're thinking of a week as in seven days, then baby, we're closing out the first week. But if you're thinking about like a weekday such, I don't know. I really don't know how it works out. Can I
tell you something? I'm a little curb babble and you're fanning yourself, reader, he is fanning himself. What's up? Um? Well, a few things happened today. One I ordered a candle in the mail and I opened it up and the glass was broken everywhere and now my my, my fraser fur candle is not usual. I'm so sorry, and so the side. The other thing is Hans isn't in the chat today? Why does that perturbute so? Well? I just
like his energy. I like when he like you know, can chimes in and you know, you're just whenever I have feelings for him, so do I today? You know who texted us pictures of his wedding, you bitch. Darcy Harden texted us pictures of his wedding. Gorgeous wedding and he and his wife looks so stunning together, so wonderful. We miss him, We just miss him as all. So I'm happy that you share this with me. I knew there was like a funk, and now we can put
a name to it. It's just like Also today I'm a little bit like sort of like I don't know what to expect because today, like we're only a few hours away from Evermore. Oh yeah, we're recording this on December tenth, were three hours away from Evermore being released. How well? I wanted to ask you, like, what's the deal? Like, I feel like we usually would be we'd be so excited, but I feel like there's some trepidation in the air.
Are you trepidacious? A little bit me too? Oh no, well, I mean I texted you before and I was like, oh my god, can you believe in your energy? Was no? No, that was I'm so sorry, Gruna, it was no. But honestly, I feel don't don't take on mine? What is your no? I'm telling you, I'm like I wouldn't describe the way I feel about her album coming out as excited, I would say, I'm I'm a borderline I'm trepidacious, I'm borderline concerned.
I don't want these to be folklore beca And thank you for saying that, my queen queen, because I think folklore is so special, truly, Like folklore came at a time like think about it, like and like the middle of July, like we were all sort I mean like we're all sort of thawing from like the initial quarantine like trauma, and then it felt like an exhale. It felt like an X. It made me think like it was I I'm still processing. And honestly, I think I
think we're the only Swifties who feel this way. I think a lot of Taylor swift Nation, Tailor Nation, feels this way. I mean a lot of Tailor Nation, and I think is sort of of course, we're always fever. And by the way, when this episode comes out, by the time people hear this, the verdict will be out on whether or not this was folklore b Side City or another gorgeous creation. And I believe that we're very sort of susceptible to getting both. So I'm praying for
art always you are, I see prayed for time. I walked in on Matt Rodgers on his knees, if you can believe it, hands to the floor, I was, and then he raised them to the sky, and then I raised them. I did. I raised them high. And it was only then that I was able to really call out art, like I'm praying for art, please Art, And that day what happens? That was the day of folklore. If it's good, know that I prayed after this episode. And if it's bad, no that I chose to save
my save my prayers. All you might as well throw a dart to the board on and use up one of these prayers on one of the fifty new Star Wars things that have been announced today, or did you see this? I think that some of them show potential. I think that some of them show art potential, and I might pray for them, such as the Rosario Dawson h s and that font and I was like, is this an a Star Wars American horror story? And then
I was like, okay, okay, baby, it's a Rosario Dawson vehicle. You, as someone who is a Star Wars fan and as someone who Well, you just said something so interesting, which is some of them show potential, which like is that what we're settling for now? Like twelve new products get announced and we're like a few, Yeah, some of those
look good. Shouldn't they all look good? Well, at a certain point, it's just gonna be like somebody said this on Twitter today, but it's just gonna be like TV and Star Wars, like regular TV and then Star Wars it's like Marvel and it's just there's I was kind of shocked when I saw it. I mean literally literally it feels even more they're taking over comp really, I mean it's like the universes are going to be created, and we've got to be careful with this Disney girl.
This Disney girl walked in and we have been suspicious this young girl Disney, Like this is my This is sort of goes back to my concern though with the Taylor evermore of it all, because it's just like, is this just gonna the is gonna be actual stories that we care about because like we're able to invest in actual, real good new content or is it going to feel like Star Wars B sides you shouldn't give just because you can give like what you give as I want
to say, as an artist or as a conglomerate should be, should be. I don't know like that, I don't I don't want. I don't need Star Wars for the sake of Star Wars. I think that that's that's the point that I'm making. Don't give me b sides of the ship I already liked, like I'd rather maybe this is just me be someone that discovers something. Now. I also saw there making new indie on of Jones stuff. Um what I what I thought was cool was like I
hadn't heard of a lot of the characters before. But then some of it is like land, you know what I mean? And this that the other thing which is cool. Donald, I think let's go back to evermore, um, I will say before before we move on from Star Wars though peripherally related, um, Marvel. But I am getting excited about this new Spiderman movie though, oh yeah, because it sounds like a sort of drag event. Doctor Strange is doing like another sequel that's like about multiverses even more than
the original. But then but you know how like Jamie Foxx got signed on to this third one with Tom Holland, he was the villain Inspiderman The Amazing Spider Man two, so he was so he was um Andrew Garfield Spiderman villain, and then Alfred for Alfred Malina come back in is Toby McGuire Spiderman villain. They're they're taught like someone picked up a hint in Spiderman two, like j Jamison is trying to come up with the name for Doc and
then someone pitches him doctor Strange. He goes, that's already been taken. So like people are like in Marvel World are like, wait a minute, that's a hint or that's not a hint. It's just like a really clever tie in where it's like doctor Strange already exists in Toby maguire universe. So that's so that means that there's portals for Doctor Strange in Tom Holland universe to open a portal multiverse portal there for for Alfred Malina to come in and Jamie Foxx to come in from um uh
Andrew Garfield multiverse. But then potentially there's rumors that Toby and Kirston are signing on for this one. I saw that Kirston was rumored and that so was Emma Stone. And I know Zendai is like currently shooting it would be like an Avenger style thing. But it's like, which I like. That kind of is very cool to me. No, it appeals to me. I mean, look, I love stunts. I love I love a stunt cast moment, like we just talked about it on our episode with Joel when
someone comes in and the helicopter. Yes, that's what you need, and so a full movie that's about that. Yeah, I might didn't drink it when speaking. No, no, no, I'm just like as as m J again next to zenda as m J. Get out forget it? Yeah please, I mean yeah, you cut back from us earlier saying I don't know about Disney to us fully simping for Spider Man, for all the Spider Man cash cows to come together. Whatever we're dumb? Can I ask a question before we
move on? What is it? Because I feel like simping came in? Okay, but what does it mean? What is It's the same grammar rules as stand. It's like I simple you and that shirt. I understand what it means and how it's used, and I'm ready to start doing that, but I, as someone who is in the culture, I want to know where the culture I'm using comes from. So Stan, it comes from eminem song stand, but what
where does say? I don't know the etymology on it. Fully, I think it's honestly em embracing it as a more general use. Hopefully, I think I believe it's like, maybe it's not meant to be this functionally, but I feel like it is. You were very early on the whole stand is using Stan an eminem term is a bummer for queer people, right, And I still do it because it's become so interesting our way out. It's our little
exit strategy. It's our hatch store. You know, I love I think you can do that, okay, So, and I'll be honest with you. STAN has become, like um, a part of the vocabulary of our life in a way that it almost rolls off the tongue now, So it'll be hard, but I do like saying simplemore like to me,
that is a more satisfying landing place. You want to know, when I knew that Stan was kind of over for me, it will never be really over Katy Perry, but I, you know, would like pick up on people like our lovely most recent guestar, just like kind of making fun of it, and it's it's it's and literally our second
week back at work. I don't think you would mind if I said this, but um, I was just like kind of standing next to Kyle for a bit and we were just doing bits, and then in one of his trademark Kyle voices, he goes, we stand and I was like, oh my god, you know now that not that not now that it's become I must use it as a meta humor or as like a way that to ironically like signal that he's someone else. I'm just like, okay, we're done. We're done. So I think I think R
I P Stan welcome simple it's a real culture. It's real culture number because it's later on it's a real number two three right, peace, peace, welcome. It's another way of saying, um Stan is dead long live long lives simp. I love it. Stan is dead long lives him and actually replaced the realal culture with that. Everyone Okay, readers at home, people that are logging this, it is so decided the seventh bit of culture. The thing about it is,
um this was huge culture. This was blockbuster culture, and so were Everything we've been talking about is really just kind of blockbuster culture. I mean Taylor's releasing an album that's blockbuster culture. I mean this idea of the Spider Man three studcasts so that we can help create this communal um culture moment that I think we saw truly created by a certain film that's sold to the top of the in the mid nineteen seventies. Are you ready
for it? Yes, seven June nineteen, talk about this. This was big attacking fish culture. This was cuckoo you never wanted to go on the water again. Culture. This was done don't soundtrack culture. The girl that is the most beautiful song. Dude, du du dont don't the way I'm rolling too about the way that I sexually came. Oh yeah, the way. It's literally a beat. Dunt dun dunt dunt
dunt dun't drop into the ground while this plays. I'm telling you you feel if you embrace this song as a sort of sexual call to the dance floor, amazing things will happen. It's a floor filler. The Jaws theme song is ultimately a floor filler. That's a role of culture. Number ninety nine, the Jaws theme song, ultimately filler floor, Filler, Baby Baby. Has there been any reasure remixes? It's it's a it's a forty five year old movie. I have a confession to make. It's one of those go girl,
shut up three words which never seen it? Do you hate me? Do you want me to sort of tell you? No? I don't hate you? What I don't? I hate it at all. I just feel like I need to fill in a blank few Can I sort of tell you what happens in Jaws? Yes, my sister, And if you have any questions, I want you to ask. This is the movie Jaws. Number one scene. Beginning of the movie, number one scene, number one scene. So there's and tell
me how much you love this? A guy and a girl sort of like drinking at a bonfire on the beach, and so then they she gets like a little drunk and she has running on the beach and she's naked. She gets off take off her clothes, and he sort of passes out from being drunk. So she swims out. He's so drunk he could barely see her. She's like taking off her clothes, running away from the bonfire on the beach and she's sort of getting into the water and it's very dark. Do you see what I'm saying.
I don't know about these two people. I think they deserve it, as I see, I don't sympathize with these characters, Oh my god, even though they're like young and we know nothing about them, You're I don't know. I think they seem sympathetic to me. Also, she's blond anyway, um, so she maybe she does deserve it. Her name is Christie, by the way. And so she runs out into the water. You know what happens. And I don't even even know about the opening scene of You don't even know about
the opening scene of Jaws, So this is iconic. She's swimming and you see her from and it's like, dude, and all of a sudden, like you see her go get pulled under the water really fast, and she goes and then she pulls her again and all of a sudden, like she's thrashed around and she's Yeah, so Jaws basically
we don't ever see it. All we see is her being thrashed around in the water and like pulled under and eventually she's she's thrown up against like um, like a little like dignity in the water or whatever, like it's like one of those like little like a booie or something. He pulls her off and the last thing you see is she she's screaming, screaming, screaming, gets pulled under the water, and that's it. That the guy also got killed by Jaws. No, no, no, no, he's passed
out on the beach. He's passed out on the beach. Never even made it him. So then she's like missing and so whatever they're like or she's not missing, basically like so and so happens and they find her on the beach the next day and like literally, okay, mind you it is fourth of July weekend, Okay, big time. The town is called the town is called Jaws. Girl, No Jaws. I think I thought they called it Jaws because there are the other things named Jaws. No, I
think Jaws the beach. Wait, hold on, I have to say something. It is shocking to me if you have not seen this movie, and you might have to watch the streaming, but this was well now, I think you can stream Jaws on all sorts of things. Also, I feel like it's one of those movies that gets put on Also, I talk about Jaws culture, so you talk about Jaws the ride culture. There's a difference, and I I have a you've played the show, because we all
know what Jaws Jaws is not. Jaws has no characterization, but he has no motivation besides wanting to kill people. He is the one of the worst killers, he really is, but he's not motivated by anything more complicated than some primal desire to attack people. You're right, And so I guess you feel like you're not interested in it because doesn't have a compelling I've just not been It just has not been like an imperative for me ever to watch it. I will watch it because we are we
are ordaining it as a day of culture. And I love your passion for this and you're able to retell it so clearly and vividly. But I just want to make the distinction that you have talked about Jaws ride culture, which is I'm not same as Jaws culture. Do you
understand me? You're right, I mean I understand, and I first of all, I want to say, I think for for I have talked about Jaws ride culture many times, which I believe is Jaws culture by proxy, but now that I'm thinking about it, and I'm going back through the foul capits in my brain. Never once did I ever hear you say you had never seen it or implore you to watch it. It hasn't come up till this very moment. Every episode of Lost Culture restus. We
peel back a layer of this friendship. And I didn't know this to me? What do you think it's weirder that I haven't seen sound of music? You haven't seen us one thousand is so culturally like we all know, like doah dear, We all know like Adelwei's we know Jaws as a shark. That's that's what we all know. Let's get one thing all about Quints. I don't know who's in Girl. You don't know Quinn. Who the hell
is Quint? Who is she? Robert Shaw played Quint and he has a monologue about a shark attack he wants survived. And it is a film we know, and I'm speaking on behalf of people who have not seen Jaws. All we know is that Jaws is a shark. Possibly the town is called Jaws, and we're gonna need a bigger boat. That's all. That's all we know. Girl. First, of all, you are literally the only motherfucker who believes that the town was called Jaws. Everyone knows the town was called Amity.
Everyone knows that. And what we need on our behalf what Doug, can you get here? Please? It's crazy that you we need a third part. Doug, who's what's crazy? Or duck? He's putting on his headphones definitively and you you, I know, you know what's weirder that I haven't seen sound of music or that Bowen hasn't seen Jaws. Initially I thought it was more weird that Matt had not seen sound of music, but then I grew up from
Jaws that fucked people's heads for years. It literally is ocean culture, like you can't look at an ocean or go to a beach without someone making a Jaws Joe, you can't do it. I think they're kind of I think universal. And when I was growing up in America, I was in a landlocked state, so we didn't fucking care about Jaws or ocean culture. In Colorado, no bones because that would add to the mistique of the ocean and beach culture. Even more so people in the middle
of the country. What even crazier, Doug, what was Jaws fever? What can you explain? I grew up in a landlocked spot. People would go on vacation and my sister would not go in there because of Jaws, because of Jaws, like literally her brain like she just want to do it. That's wonderful. But also the whole world knows soul phage. No, it's do REMI fas la t do because of Julie Andrews and Rodgerson Hammerstein. I totally agree with you. That's what I'm saying that we we Doug and I agree
there on part dog do not break the tie. He did not break the time and get in here break the Anna producer, producer, Anna, Hi, what's weirder that Bowen has not seen Jaws? Or that I have not seen the sound of music? Anna is Persian and has Persian parents who can probably relate to this thing that I'm putting forward. I will say, yes, I do think sound of music is like immigrant trap culture because I saw a sound of music way before. Okay, so I do think when you're kind of I don't know why, but
parents immigrant parents seem to like sound of music. So you see that before. I do think it's just culturally what you see versus like, I think you might be onto something here because Jaws is very americature. It's very Yeah, that's and this actually ended up being a more interesting discussion than I ever could have thought, thank you. But so I think that maybe a little slightly broke the tie in my favor. I think so I think, well, no, I don't think she broke a tie because because she
acknowledges the extremely prominent American culture that is Jaws. But I do think that there is an experiential factor here that is kind of coming in with I don't know why I never saw Sound of Music, Maybe because I grew up in like a sports house, um honestly, and like just I don't know. And also you know, Sound of Music is an international story, story, international stars. Who who is who is bringing that element in the caster
Jaws nobody? I mean, I could argue that roych It, I could I could argue that Richard Dreyfuss is bringing it. I could argue the Shark itself is bringing the glam factor. Listen, I think if Steven Spielberg stopped me on the street and said bowen, and to be like, who are you he And if he said Bowen, it hurts me that you haven't seen Jaws. I'll say, well, Mr Spielberg, as an immigrant to this country, I resent the fact that
you made an American movie for Americans. Oh good day, I have to go get my hair cut at Astra Hair. Thank you. But can I ask you a question? Think about this scenario. You are swimming in the water a massive shark fin Jaws did not. Sharks existed before Jaws. Yes, I'm telling you, Bowen, sharks. What Jaws did for sharks is what sounded music did for music, American Idol did for Kelly Clark's Sky in the Sharks. I'm telling you,
Jaws made sharks the top of the charts. Jaws took sharks to the topic we knew as a culture, as a world, as a human race, that sharks are dangerous and will kill you. Not like this. You are so that out of your mind, and anyone who agrees you have come in, can I say something. You've come in today with a combative tone, and you've been very combative. Queen and Queen, let me tell you something. Carrie Underwood could do sound of music. Carrie Underwood could not do Jaws.
She could never be that shark. Okay, okay, And if Carrie Underwood could do it, must not be that kind of culture. Just kidding. I don't know. I would never. I would never. I would I would literally would never. I would die for her. A version of a loan from American Idol kill myself alone. Oh yeah, she did, Oh she did it. Well, you can't do it. You need to have it. Was she was that a duet or she did herself. You need that harmony. You need that harmony on the third though, to make it truly sore.
And I'm sorry, but you need anyway. We don't have to argue about Carrie. We're here to talk about Jaws. Keep walking me through this story in our few minutes that we have left. Let's just say this, because there's the death of this girl. Everyone's like, oh, there must be a huge shark here. The bites on this young girl, our psycho. So then they're like, well, it's worth of July and probably shouldn't close the beaches. Keep them open. It's a huge time for business, says the mayor, who
looks very much like a mayor. Now there's like the town sheriff who's like the lead of the movie. Um, he's sort of going back and forth in his head about whether to close the beach down. Very very contemporary, very COVID narrative. Yes, very that a time a story for now now more than ever draws. And so they're at the beach one day, he's literally at the beach one day when a kid gets killed by the shark, like you see it. It's crazy. And then he still, um,
hasn't closed the beach down, like there's people go crazy. Though. At the funeral, the kid's mother says to the sheriff, we know that you waited days after this first girl was killed and didn't close the beach, so anything you do now is too little, too late. I'm paraphrasing here. And mind you, the person who's like the coroner, like whose retro dry fust has come and said, you need to close down the beach. If there's some sort of animal that's this big, that could do this to this girl,
you need to close down the beach. And he's ignored, ignored, ignored. So basically, um, they finally closed down the beach, but they're they're unable to get rid of the shark. To the extent where they realize this is really a summation. They must go out to try to like kill it. Like, so they put these they get this little ship together
called the Orca. It's three guys. One is Quint, this older guy I'm telling you about us, like a shark expert, and then there's the town sheriff and this coroner who's like able to identify. I guess it's those three guys there. Oh my god, they forgot a skipper. They did not hire a skipper, but the sheriff does have a wife that's like, please protect us, you know what I mean.
So um. So, basically they go out to see to kill this shark and they're trying to attract it with these big yellow boois I guess, and they find it and basically spoiler alert, it is a fight to the fucking death. The shark gives it to them. The shark expert Quin ends up by the shark. Yes, yes, yes, oh yeah, no, you need to I can't believe I just told you what happened in the movie. But basically
they do kill the shark. But then there's more shark sequels later, like Jaws to three D, which Dennis Quaid was in and said had a cocaine budget hidden into the film. That was the eighties. This movie came out at seventy five, and legitimately it was like a rough time for beaches because people were afraid to go on the water. I don't deny the impact that Jaws had
on the culture. I'm just saying, yes, it's just it's just not not it's just not your it's not something that it is absolutely absolutely deserves a spot in the twelve days of culture when a thousand percent, but when you start to bring in a sound of music, the sound of music, I just look, have have you seen
The Godfather? If not, neither of I and I think that that's actually important for me and my sister to connect on, is that none of this really matters because neither of us have seen The Godfather, and that's it's important, neither of us ingested that hetero patriarchy. I told you, we'll see that. I do love a crime movie. I love a crime movie. Out of here, what do you like like crime? Bitch? I love good Fellas, I love but he's never seen Jaws. But he loves good Fellas,
but he's never seen Jaws. Because that culture is too American. You know what you are? A crazy boy? Oh you that's actually gonna be where we're wat I'll get ready for the name I'll call Matt tomorrow on day eight of the Tall Days of Culture. We've got some great ones coming up, I think, But for now we say to Jaws, fank you for giving me the best day culture is
