What's up Ian? you know that girl the tall one with the wig tell her that i will give her a hundred thousand lira if she'll come and have a drink with us do you think she'll join us i wouldn't be surprised it isn't every day that some idiot offers a hundred thousand lira just to have a drink with them

Introducing The Italian Connection

This is going to be epic. We're looking at Fernando DeLeo's sack it. I guess they're called the Milano Trilogy or the Millie Trilogy. Milan Milieu. There you go. I can't say it again. Milan Milieu. There it is. So last episode, we looked at the first of those. And in this episode, we are going to be looking at 1972's Italian Connection. And super excited, man. First time watch for me. And wow, I can understand. And we'll get into some Quentin Tarantino, I'm sure. But I can understand.

The Film's Epic Car Chase Scene

why this is a staple in his life, man. This is going to be a blast. So buckle up, Buttercups, because this is going to be a fun ride. One of the most epic chase scenes in cinema history, and we're going to talk about that for sure. My absolute favorite.

chasing right yeah dude i cannot i'm looking back in my my memory of like chase sequences in films and there are some uh let's say when i when i go back like the french connection for sure there's there's a few that are really good but man even when you get into like um oh what was the planet not planet terror but uh god dang i always forget the dag on the the trilogy over there

Oh, yeah, death proof. Thank you, death proof. Good God. But anyways, there are some of those good chasings. This one right here, man. Oh, my God. We'll get into it.

And we're going to get into this. Like I said, it's episode 430 and we're moving right along. Our next episode of LOTC is going to be 431, which is going to be our Vincent Price top five. We're going to narrow those down, which, wow.

you do that with vincent price but we're here to talk italian cinema and i got to give a big shout out because it was my birthday a couple days ago or three or four days ago whatever it was and my boy over here ian man hooked me up for my birthday and i got to share this for you the listeners man and viewers man he hit me up with this one right here and uh this one's what uh mgm so this is a quino labor and it's a fistful of dynamite

And I've never seen this, Rob Steiger. I am so excited about this. And James Cabern, man, holy crap, dude. This thing, I can't wait, Ian. And then you got me the Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman. I've heard so much about this. I've never watched it. I have never seen Marathon Man. And then you got me over here with the specialist. There you go, the specialist, man. And I'm assuming this is a spaghetti western. It's a Sergio Corbucci. Yeah, it's a Sergio Corbucci spaghetti western. Nice.

Dude, man, it reminds me, I know y'all probably can't see that too well, but it reminds me some of maybe like a little bit of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns there. And then here is Fernando Dak. DeLeo, who we're talking about, in his slaughter hotel. Kaboom! yes yes considered one of the sleaziest giallo movies ever made like right up there with new york ripper and stuff like that i love sleaze and i'm gonna be excited and then and i really appreciate eating uh ian for sure

Yeah, anytime. Happy birthday. Thank you. And then my wife hooked me up with Butcher Baker and Nightmare Maker from Severn Films, which I'm super excited. I love this movie. There you go. I love this slasher film. So she got me. Oh, Svensson. Bo Svensson is so great in it. And his level of homophobia in that movie is like just so disturbing. It is.

He, it's funny. You, you watched the movie for a little while. I think, Oh, Susan Terrell is going to be the main villain of this movie. And it's like, both Svensson's arguably even worse than she is. Oh, way, way worse. Yeah. And then she picked me up.

Lucio Fulci's The House by the Cemetery 4K from Arrow Videos. Man, so excited on that one. I've got it, but I've got it on like a DVD from back in the day. And then Cauldron City of the Living Dead 4K. Such a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful movie. Man, I cannot wait to crack that open and see what Cauldron did with that. And actually, I love the Bosomania section that Severn released recently from Russ Myers. Oh, my God. And this is Motor Psycho, man. So I'm going to get it.

into this motorcycle right here. from uh russ myers that goes with my collection the vixen trilogy and i got one more of those to pick up so anyways it's been a really good birthday i've got a lot of other stuff man my son came in gave me a halloween five michael myers mask it looks insane

Don Shanks mask that has the, uh, the long neck on it. Yes. Yes. And, uh, I picked it up from trick or treat studios. He got me that I've got a Lex Luger. He knows Lex Luger is my favorite wrestler. He got me a Lex Luger, uh, wrestling figure that I'm on. set up here with the nwo belt this is all kinds of good stuff it was a great birthday uh but anyways we're here to talk italian cinema i'm gonna quit boring you guys uh but here we go so we are doing these and this is the uh fernando de leo

I've got the set that Ian gifted me for Christmas last year, and we are doing the Italian Connection. We did Caliber 9 last week. Ian's got the cool single edition there from Raro Video, which is awesome to have him in individual. What?

Italian Connection Plot Synopsis

Like we always like to do, we're going to head over to you, Ian, let you give us a plot synopsis, and then we'll start breaking this big bad puppy down. Okay, so I'm just going to take this from the back of the Blu-ray. It says the second film in Fernando de Leo's Milieu trilogy focuses on Luca Canale, a small-time mobster and pimp who has been set up by his gangland boss. When a shipping of heroin disappears between Italy and New York, Canale is framed for the theft.

Canale is pursued through Milan by a pair of merciless American hitmen played by Henry Silva and Woody Strode and referenced by Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction. who mistakenly believe that he has stolen a drug shipment. After his wife is murdered, the hunted becomes the hunter as Canale takes revenge on his boss, the hitman, and everyone else who stands in his way.

Mafia Focus and Luca's Story

Boom. Typical. Let's just say it's a typical story in Italian cinema. The heroine.

The heroin got stolen. That hasn't happened before, right, Ian? It's like always the drugs. Always the drugs. Yeah. Well, and what's interesting about the Leo's movies is his movies focus more on the mob and the mafia. Like, there are no... cops in this movie to speak of like in the first movie we did have some yeah but they were definitely on the periphery whereas this there's there's nothing it's just about you know like they say a small time pimp basically versus the mafia and it is

The absolute epitome. This movie is the absolute epitome of... the one man against the world idea that this genre is built on. Because Luca has nowhere to turn in this movie. As soon as he's framed for what he's done, like no one's there to help him. He has one friend who he thinks is helping him, but then maybe not so much.

I think everybody he goes to, he goes to this mechanic for help to try to get him a gun, which he does technically get a gun from him, but yeah. Don't do no good without bullets. The only one who kind of arguably helps him is one of... his his uh his prostitutes sex workers whatever you want to call them i think that that might be the more proper term nowadays but uh trini is the one i'm talking about whereas the one

played, the one played by Femi Benuzzi is a little bit less inclined. They actually have a little bit of an argument earlier in the film where she's like, I want my own house. That's what she's talking about. She's like, I want my own house. He's like, you don't bring it.

enough money which i don't know if i mean he's not bringing in enough money for you but uh yeah uh but we do see what what i like about this movie early on is we do see that luca can handle himself he gets into a fight with uh uh geo i think it's a giovanni chianfriglia i think is his name um and uh he

he's a guy we've seen several times, but he's like a big formidable dude. And Luca just takes both him and his friend out pretty easily. So it tells you, okay, this guy can handle himself. If a mafia Don's going after this guy, he's probably going to have his hands full and boy, does he? And what I, like is how Luca finds his way in and out of certain situations in different ways like

In the first scene where he's cornered by two guys, he has to fight them. Then the second time, he kind of has to use his wits a little bit more by, you know, waiting for the right moment to pull the gun, throwing the gun at one guy, and then shooting the other.

one kind of combines that where he finally goes to don trisoldi's uh place and he basically disguises himself as a janitor to get the drop on them that's again him using his wits and then he but then he eventually uses the gun to take a of them out so luca does a good job of combining all of them and then you have the amazing car chase right in the middle um about an hour into the movie which what what's so great about the car chase is is it's a well it's it's not just a car chase it is a four

is a four-stage chase, right? It first starts in the car. Then they get out of one car. He pursues him through this sort of pool area. Then the other guy gets into another vehicle, and he hangs on the front of the vehicle, which is an amazing stuff.

I'm not sure if Mario Adorf is doing all of the stunt work. I think some of the long shots, maybe someone else, but he's definitely doing some of it. I know that in the bonus feature, they talked about how they changed the frame rate. They would film it and then ramp it up. so that it looked a lot faster than it really was. So there's probably some of the close-ups where it definitely is Adorf doing it. He deserves a lot of credit for that. Then he manages to stop him in the car, and they go...

pursues him into this amusement park where they end up having a big fight and he ends up stabbing him in the neck with this big stake for a tent, basically. I think that's what it looks like. That's what it looked like to me. Yeah.

Yeah, that was brutal. And I knew it was going to have to because that chase sequence was so epic. It was like the ending battle had to... match it right it had to do something to yeah to hit the flavor of what was going on the junkyard scene oh god which by the way the the poster art is a total uh spoiler

with the crane like i'm looking at it now yeah i'm like bro what the hell like you just got it right on the freaking frame right there but anyways uh man that that chase sequence is awesome and then like you said with the tent steak whatever it was whatever it was it was brutal it was and it matched the chase so i was like it was a great payoff it was worth

staying for the whole ride and uh i thought they nailed it man i thought the the crash sequences there's a scene where the one vehicle has kind of got another one in front of them down this narrow road and the crash through that is everything about it was also i love the part um because i think that underpass that like sort of underpass that leads right to the water i think that that's reused in shoot first die later i think um leo obviously loves shooting in milan

And I think he reused a lot of the same areas. I think if you're paying attention to some of these movies, you can see them. But yeah, the chase scene is just, I mean, I don't think there's ever been another, like, like there are good stakes.

to it because you know we just we just saw his wife and his daughter get killed yeah so then you have the part when he takes off after him so there's stakes to it because you want to see him get his revenge but then it goes like i said it just goes there's so many

different stages where it's a really good car chase it's a really good foot chase and i can't think of another movie where i've seen someone hanging on the front of a car like that right where he's literally he's not he doesn't even have any leverage he's literally just standing up on the front of the car because it's not one of those cars that has a more vertical hood. It's completely horizontal. It's one of those Volkswagen type vehicles.

yeah yeah it's amazing and and here's the thing like i did read i think imdb actually and whether that's true or not in some of the trivia they talked about how that uh mario did all the stuff so i'm assuming that means Every stunt. I'm agreeing with you. Maybe there were a few of those longer shots. Maybe they didn't. But according to IMDB, he did all his own stunts, which I thought was epic. Man, that's freaking awesome. And he done so good in this. We loved him in caliber 9.

I thought he was a sleazy character. You didn't want to root for him. He was not a likable character. In this one, you want to root for him because of what's going on. He's not the nicest of people. He's not a model citizen. But once you start watching the film and you see what he's been going through and what he's happened to do, and then the death of his wife and child right in front of his eyes, you know, then you become his fan. You're like, man, this guy needs to get. his revenge and

He just crushed it, man. Well, even if he's a pimp and not a, not necessarily a good guy, like he doesn't deserve to get framed. No one deserves that. So regardless of if you don't like him at the beginning, it's like, well, you want to see him get out of the situation because there's no, you know, you know, he doesn't deserve that um i think that they do have they do try to have a good moment between him and trini like i think she says something like

i can't remember what she says like you paid my medical bills or you helped me out in this one situation there was something she said something about that i can't remember exactly what it was i don't know if you remember but i don't write off my head but i know what you're talking about yeah there's a scene where she's like you helped me out just out of the

goodness like she's like because you're a good guy or you know something like that so it's it it establishes that he seems to be fair with his uh with his women and he does a good job them as we see in the beginning so at least if he's a pimp he's not a bad one i did like i thought trini was a great character uh francesca romana coluzzi beautiful lady and very likable in this movie yeah

She actually was one of the few people from the movie that was in the little bonus feature, the small bonus feature. And she said that Fernando de Leo was a human first before he was a director. So she said that he was... kind of an even better person than he was a director and she said she really liked working with Adorf that's awesome we do have in here now we do have the character you mentioned of Woody Strode who plays Frank and then you got Henry Silva playing David Catania and they're the

Character Spotlight: Henry Silva and Woody Strode

York hitmen that are sent in to kind of take out. Luca Canale. My wife hates Henry Silva. She says just that face. She does not like Henry Silva. There's something to his face where he should not smile. Ever.

Like he just, there's something about the way he smiles. It kind of reminds me a little bit of the way David Hess smiles, truth be told. But Henry Silva, like when he smiles, it's like you look at him and it's like, he shouldn't smile. It doesn't, it almost looks like he's physically in pain. to smile. Every time you see him, he has one facial expression. It never changes.

What DeLeo said in the bonus feature was he was like, he has three facial expressions. You could just mold his face and you could just mold those facial expressions and he wouldn't ever have to show up on set. You could just use the face molds. You wouldn't even have to show up. I love it. We know now that Quentin Tarantino has mentioned that he kind of patterned. the characters of of woody and henry you know he kind of patterned them over with with his infamous movie

Right. We got to love, we got to love Pulp Fiction, man. It's such a great movie. And that's the John Travolta. The Jules and Vincent characters from Pulp Fiction with John Travolta and Sam Jackson. Yeah. Total nod. You can see it for sure. And I love it. I love it. But these two characters, they're fun in this movie. You know, they're stone-faced. I love Trini's actually, there's a scene in the club. It's like a...

dance nightclub, strip club, whatever you want to call it, which Fernando does another one of those just weird sequences where he just puts like a naked woman dancing in the middle of the movie. But there's the sequence where Trini's talking to David. frank and he's like she's like i don't like you talking about david i like him and basically says you know i'll go sleep with you right now and i'll give you the information you want and then uh

You know, David's like, no, you give us information first. She gives them information, and Woody just... jumps up for frank and he's gone well what he what he's the one who convinces her he's like okay if he doesn't come to this club which club does he come to he's like oh i can use my i can use this to my advantage but the very funny thing is between the characters is like Frank is all stoic and all business-like, whereas...

Henry Silva's like, I want to have fun while we're here. Like, I want to have fun while we're on vacation. There's a moment between them early on where he's like, you know, like when he sees Luciana Paluzzi, when she leaves the room and Henry Silva. is like man she's there's a lot of good looking broads here in milan we're gonna have a fun time and and uh and frank is like you know keep your hands in your pockets if any of these girls approach you we're here on business and he's like all right

All right. All right. He's like, I want to have fun though. We're here. And even, even when they pull up to all the, uh, the hookers. Yeah. Uh, when he's like, he starts hitting, he literally, he reads.

he creates the oprah meme before oprah oprah we did it oprah is a hack yeah you know the oprah when she's like you get a car you get a car he's like he's doing the whole you get money you get money you get money until one of them tries to take his wallet right you know and you know i don't know how well it would fly nowadays but technically that woman hits him first yeah and he hits her back right

But yeah. And I'm sitting here like thinking in that sequence, like he's passing, he's got all these women around him. He's having fun. You know, he's laughing. He's giving everybody money. Why would you be so greedy to grab the wallet? Like, dude, you're giving money and then you're going to take the wallet. And of course.

That flips him. He's like, no, instantly he's like, yeah, you're going to get hurt. But that was such a weird sequence. But, man, it's such a fun movie to watch. I was really enjoying the story in this one. I like the cast in this one a lot. I really love Lou.

Film Review: Themes and Enjoyment

Mario Adorf. I thought he was phenomenal in this movie. He was the tough guy. And then we have the sequence where he's on the run and he's trying to hide. He has nowhere to go because everybody recognizes him. So we got those. moments where he's scared he's fearing for his life so you got all these emotions running through this movie and he just crushes every freaking one of them The women are excellent in this movie. It's just an enjoyable film from start to finish, in my opinion.

DeLeo injects a little bit less of his political stuff in here. I think in this, he's just making a more entertaining movie. Really, the only political thing you get, at least to me, is the part when you see the poster of JFK and Che Guevara. where it says something like you're in heaven now or something like, you know, like it's, it's, I can't remember exactly what it is, but yeah, that's like the only political moment you kind of get is him conveying JFK and Shea Guevara with the.

poster uh but um Yeah, it's just an entertaining movie. You know, one man against the world type of movie all the way through. And I love it. I mean, once it gets going, it doesn't stop. Yeah, Adolfo Sally, he plays... the Don Vito Trisoldi, the Don of the...

One group, man, I like his character. You know, you don't want to root for him either. And then what happens to him? His demise is awesome. I thought they did a great job with that. Let's look into the music of this movie. What did you think of the music by Armando? Trevally.

Very different score from the first movie, and I think it goes with the fact that this is a very different movie. A lot of percussion, a lot of bass in there, especially during the chase scenes. A lot of brass, especially the main theme. It's a very, what you may call it, identifiable main theme. It sticks with you when you hear it.

It definitely does. And they use it as a leitmotif of different instruments throughout the film, too. Yeah, which I appreciated the change up in that one. You know, the last episode with caliber nine, it become a little monotonous. This one didn't. It was just like it was handled really well.

that the last one was bad but this one i just really thoroughly enjoyed i enjoyed that and the cinematography by franco villa movies there's a lot of those chase sequences a lot of those things i thought they'd done really well with that uh the story is strong i just really like the story in this one man it's simple you know heroin heroin drugs stolen and you know you got a set up and then you know so it's not like that

concluded like all these different parts but it works man it just really works i thought it just rolled really well so a super fun movie and we i don't know if you watched the italian i watched the english dubbed version of this one and it matched well this one and you probably have some information on that one.

The last movie, when I was watching it, we talked about this, how the subtitles are still up there, and it's kind of distracting because what they're saying is not exactly what is being portrayed in the Italian. In this one, it was fairly close, to be honest. I did not have the subtitles on, so I wouldn't know for sure. It was really close.

yeah okay well that's that's good to know that it was because milan caliber 9 i think was definitely a little different especially in those political scenes between the cops i think they had maybe had to change it to make it a little bit more um let's say, acceptable for mainstream English-speaking audiences. So I think that they had to change it, whereas in this, there wasn't maybe as much of a reason. Well, the background of that one was...

This was like four different languages going on, they said in the movie. And they ended up... english was the main language they used for the filming of this movie so that's why that might be why and the fact that you actually have two english speaking well technically you have three english speaking people in the movie but two uh who are the main star who are arguably the main stars. Cyril Cusick plays the... He actually does some voice dubbing, and he's actually playing...

He's actually playing a role in this, which is really cool. Of course so. Yeah, that's Corso. I like him at the beginning when he's doing it. He's like, dress American, act American, drink a lot, leave big tips, and put your feet up on the table, chew gum all the time, do your best to look like a couple of gangsters.

Oh, and I text you in the middle of this movie, man. The bottle placement of J&B is so perfect in this one to the point that they always made sure if they're pouring a bottle of J&B out, the label is completely turned. and toward camera frame. Every frame of a J&B bottle is perfectly framed in this one, as well as you were talking, what's it called? The Punta... Punta Mess. Punta Mess cigarettes. Those are... No, that's not a cigarette. I mean the liquor.

Yeah, it's a vermouth. Yeah. There's also some cigarettes that are placed perfectly. I'm trying to remember the name. It's a weird name. But anyways, the cigarette was placed. It wasn't Aster, was it? It wasn't Aster. It was another name. Yeah. It's usually always Aster for these movies. Right.

But they made sure that all the placements of these things were just, like, very visible, especially the J&B bottle. It's very placent. And I'd get a kick out of that any time they do that. It's really funny. Lucia Canale, who plays... Adorf, or if you want to call him Luca, Luca's character is his wife, Silva, Silva Kasana. She really did have a big part in this one.

no not too much i mean she was kind of just there um interestingly enough this was somewhat later in her career because she was in like hercules in the 50s so she was in a lot of peplum movies and she was in a lot of euro spy movies before this she kind of started in the industry when she was

a bit younger she's almost 40 um by the time she's in this she still looked great still looks great though yeah absolutely uh lots of good stuff in this one man you got anything in the dubbing corner so yes so i have Robert Spafford is dubbing Adolfo Celli as Don Tresoldi. Susan Spafford is dubbing Luciana Paluzzi as Ava. Let's see here. Trini. So that would be, she's dubbed by Carolyn DeFonsica. Francesca, Romana, Kalizzi.

Franco Fabrizzi, as in Rico, the mechanic, I think is dubbed by Michael Forrest. No, Ed Mannix. Okay. Yeah, Ed Mannix. So I some of these other ones, I don't really have character actor names because they. they're they're kind of blinking you miss it rolls but ed manix is also dubbing so there's two henchmen that first uh corner luca he ends up beating them up inside of this area with where there's a bunch of uh wood laying around uses it

two by four, much to his advantage. Ed Mannix is dubbing one of those henchmen. William Keel is dubbing the other one. His friend is, is it Niccolo Gianni Machia? He is. Dubbed by, let's see here, Larry Dolgan. I recognize that voice right away. Giuseppe Castellano, who's one of the henchmen.

that you see in the mechanic scene is dubbed by robert summer we saw him in the last movie he had like amber glasses on the last movie yeah and he got killed during that um i think one of those exchange scenes yeah and then um i didn't want to go over the cast and i wanted to i might be a little slow with this so um

Actor Ranking Segment Introduction

Please bear with me. I wanted to debut a new segment and I wanted to see what you thought of it. Okay. I thought about doing something where we rank people that we've seen in other movies before. Okay. And it's like, if we've seen them in two movies, we call them an...

all-star for black glove mysteries if we see them in three movies we call them a superstar we've seen them in four movies we call them a hall of famer and then if we've seen them in five which that does not apply to anyone in this movie they're an all-time great what do you think of that

Applying the Black Glove Rankings

all right i'm all down for it man yeah because i mean think about someone like george eastman he is an all-time great for the show yeah he's been in so many movies so i'm gonna i'll start with mario adorf he is actually officially a hall of famer now because we've seen him in

Bird of the Crystal Plumage, What Have They Done to Your Daughters, Short Night of the Glass Dolls, Caliber 9. Actually, so now he's an all-time great because that's five movies. Henry Silva, I think this is only the third movie we've seen him in because we did Cry of a Prostitute. Well, no, this would be just the second one, I think. Or no, no, third, because Escape from the Bronx. So he's a superstar now. But he will be a Hall of Famer in our next episode. And then he'll be even further.

a little later on, because there's definitely one particular movie that I know we're going to cover from him. Woody Strode, this is his second movie, so he's an all-star. uh we saw him in once upon a time in the west he's one of the three opening guys who gets killed at the beginning adolfo celli all-star for being in who saw her die

Luciana Paluzzi. I don't think we've actually seen her in anything else. I didn't recognize her. Yeah, I didn't recognize her. Yeah, she, well, so there's a bond connection here because... Adolfo Celli, Blaise Trisoldi, is the main villain in Thunderball. Yeah. And Luciana Paluzzi is the villainess in Thunderball, so they interact a lot in that movie. And that was about eight years or so before this. So now I'll move on. I'm just trying to think of some of the others. Femi Benuzzi, she is...

one one two so now this is their third no fourth movie because he did uh so sweet so dead yeah uh italian connection and strip nude for your killer so three sorry so she is a superstar she end up she'll probably end up being a hall of famer someday as well because there might be some more movies that we'll cover with her. Sylvia Koshina, we saw her in So Sweet, So Dead and Crimes of the Black Cast. So right now she is a superstar of Black Love Mysteries.

uh and then giuseppe castellano we've seen him in some stuff before i know i know we have caliber nine bird with the crystal plumage so he is also a superstar he'll end up being way up there too by the time we're done uh then i want to see if i can find giovanni chi and friglia i know we've seen him and stuff so escape from the bronx 2019 after the fall of new york and now this one so that's he's also a superstar and he'll end up being more than that

as we go along as well um how did i do with that i like it i'm gonna have to take notes and keep up with all these i love it well i just it was just something i randomly thought of and i kind of took it a little bit i didn't take it directly because i made my own

yeah um the grind bin podcast shout out to them they'll do something where if they've seen someone in more than one movie or if they've seen them in several they'll be like oh he's a hall of famer for our show or an all-star for our show yeah They don't designate the number of movies or anything like I did, though. So I'm kind of borrowing it, but I put my own little spin on it just because I thought it was cool and it'll allow us to keep track of...

who we've seen before and how many movies we've seen them in. I love it. Yeah. That George Eastman would definitely. Oh yeah. He's yeah. Like he's how many movies have we done with him? Like seven, seven at least. Rightfully so. We love Georgie's. Yeah. That's so cool. Well, I love that, man. Let's see. What else we got in this movie? Once again, the chase sequence is just the...

Film Release Details and Ratings

chef kiss to the sky man i'm telling you it's such a great sequence if you watch if you like i don't have much time just watch the chase sequence and just be blown away with that alone i think you can find just the chase sequence on youtube if you look it up too

totally sure a lot of the cast the release now this thing did release a few times on video uh back in the day and this was released on three different titles uh yeah three different titles it was released under hired to kill as well as black kingpin and then hitmen and then hit men so four different releases on home video back in the day that this movie released on in the uh united states uh we also know that in this movie

The cast itself is very Italian, but there's also some English. So there is that English dub version that you can get on this. set that we have right here, or the one that Ian has where he has the solo disc. And once again, if you haven't watched the last episode, this set from Rero actually has individual discs. So it's not just one disc. right so it has four movies so i really love that this thing right here man is such a gold masterpiece

Love this movie, brother. I love this movie, but it does come under a lot of different names, so I love that. I love it. The English dub version is awesome. Manhunt and Milan is another one I've heard, too. That's a, yeah. Okay. So there's a lot of different ones. Manhunt in the city, Manhunt in Milan for sure. La Mala Ordina, the mob orders. So they could go under a million names, but either way, it's called the epic chase.

sequence it's like this is so fun um what else you got on this one brother

Analyzing Key Film Moments

Another moment I love is when when Trisoldy and, you know, Dave and Frank encounter the two henchmen that Luca beats up at first. And, you know, Dave, Dave has this nice. this nice rant Henry Silva does where he's like, oh, he flew away like a little bird over the rainbow. And then he's like, rest assured he'll be back in his cage tonight. And he's like, you know, a man who surrounds himself.

is shit you gotta you know he's like you gotta strike the fear into them like an open wound and then he ends up killing them right so yeah i mean they they go i think this movie does try to say that Adolfo Celli as John Tassoli is kind of an idiot because, you know, what does he do instead of like...

you know kidnapping his family he decides he's going to kill them and i'm thinking to myself wouldn't this be better to use them as a bargaining chip instead of just killing them because at that point he has nothing left to lose you know so to me i'm like that's not a very good decision you're just

gonna make him more angry at you so and like you know i just i i understand he's like i need to kill this guy so i need to draw him out but his whole plan is stupid and then he has like he doesn't have nearly enough men at his own headquarters

to guard him. He has, what, four guys there? That's not enough. What are you doing? Well, that's just it. If you're a Don and you're of a, what do you call it, like a mobster... family you should have a family like this dude either he's just a really small time gangster or he just does not have anybody that backs him i would think you would have a force like you would have

multiple people on your, but evidently not. And then I do think he tries to inject some comedy into this at points. Like, I remember when Silva leaves the room at one point when they meet Don Tresoldi, he talks to that big guy with the kind of...

he's a he kind of has a rough looking face he's like you know next time i'll give you a bone or something and he's like fuck you and then and then uh there's that one woman who's always around like the hotel who's like are they swedish you know so there's

some comedy i think he tried to inject into this just some moments of levity a little bit more than in milan caliber 9 because i don't think there were many moments at all that were funny besides the stuff with the cops that i think is a little unintentionally funny maybe or just a little over the top

yeah this one's pretty straight laced man and i like that yeah uh lots of good stuff lots of good stuff man let's see what else you got anything else you want to talk about and then we'll get to ratings we still got a voicemail to get to anything else you want to talk on this one uh no i think i'm good

Well, let's go ahead and go to our ratings first, and then we'll go to the voicemail, and we'll talk about that. Man, I'm ready to go ahead and rate this thing. It's a 10. Like, this is a first-time viewing. This is a 10. I can't think of anything. that i would have changed much more than what they given us in this one um so for me uh chef kiss what you got on this one

Yeah, I'm I'm also giving it a 10. I mean, I wasn't entirely sure. I don't know if I like it quite as much as I do Milan caliber nine, but they're they're both very different movies. This one, I think, is a little bit more action oriented. Milan caliber nine is more sort of.

of mystery dialogue tension oriented so yeah they're definitely different kind of films but i would also give this one a 10 i mean there's a reason why i said we should do each of these movies just as one movie for the episodes i think that they were worthy of it for sure Yeah. What bonus features did you have on your disc?

Just the one, just that one documentary called Alla Origini Della Malla, which I think means something like the origin of mafia films or something like that. It's like a 50 minute or something, right? It's 20 minutes. It's not that long. It was fairly interesting. I mean, DeLeo and some of the others were on it. I thought it was a fairly interesting sort of short documentary. Cool. What we're going to do now, we're going to go to our caller here, which...

you'll recognize from the last episode, we love Luke. So we're going to play that. There may be some spoilers in this one. So if you've not seen the movie, go ahead and watch the movie and then come back and listen to this. But let's go to it, Ian, and we'll... comment on this hey guys look there's a calling with a review of the Italian Connection movie let's see I guess initially I thought it was kind of funny

Silva and Strode, those characters, are cast as like typical American gangsters. But what the Italian, what the guy who hires him... uh the italians think of what the typical american gangster is you know put your feet up on the table chew gum a lot you know whatever i mean i i found that kind of funny um because i would think that some gangsters are like that and

Some are not, but that was his interpretation of what American gangster should look like to these Italian people. Anyway, so I also see a parallel. between the Sylva and Strode characters in this movie and the characters Travolta and Jackson play in Pulp Fiction. Jackson in Pulp Fiction and Strode in this movie.

seem to play pretty serious hitmen, while the Travolta character and Silva, they're committed to completing the hit or the contract, but also, you know... have a little bit of fun in the process um i didn't see the need to kill luca's uh wife and daughter um i know that it it draws luca out uh and thanks but i

I don't know. I didn't see it coming, and I didn't really see the need to do that. I mean, maybe kidnap them, hold them, something. But I don't know. Sometimes it seems like these films resort to let's just kill and move on. And then lastly, I guess, Silva always seems to have a very, he always seems to be very comfortable in his roles and he has a certain presence on scene in any scene that he has. So I find...

you know, a new appreciation for his ability to act, I suppose. Amen. Have a good show, guys. There you go, Luke. I love it. Love it. I totally agree with what he's talking about with Henry Silva, man. He does have that ability to just... still a scene and you love it.

He feels comfortable. In this, he's playing a little bit more of a different character from what we've seen him do before. In Escape from the Bronx, he kind of played a similar character where he is a bit over the top and a bit of a senior. chewer a scenery chewer but when we saw him in cry of a prostitute he was playing a hitman who was a little bit more stoic and a little quieter um so in this one i like the fact that he went back to being a little bit more uh

and trying to have fun within the serious moments. He's one of my favorites for sure. I think he's my fifth favorite actor of all time if I had to rank them. Yeah, I would be right in there. And also something with his fight. sequences i always there's this comedian i don't some of you will probably know who i'm talking about and i think it was like on tiktok instagram something like that but anyways he would do this judo chop judo chop

You know what I'm talking about? It's hilarious, man. It's a comedian. Well, every time I see Henry Silva fight, he always does these little like... doo-doo chop i can't help but chuck lot even pearl will tell you like when i'm watching a movie every time i go doo-doo chop i mean yeah i i can see that for sure i do think he looks somewhat believable though in the fight scenes in terms of being able to

handle himself. He could definitely handle himself, yeah. But yeah, I mean, that was just the way movies, they fought in movies back then too, was in general. I mean, Roger Moore in the James Bond movies is really famous for that judo chop.

type thing where that's all he does in his fight scenes and obviously um captain kirk from star trek was famous for doing the same stuff too it's that's just the way the fight scenes were done back then judo chops and i'm just gonna throw you across the realm of

a few grappling moves and stuff like that. It wasn't, you know, and in the nineties, we entered into the Harrison Ford era where it was just two guys are punching each other and one's trying to punch each other harder than the other. That's what that's every Harrison Ford fight scene. So it just.

It depends on the movie and the time where the fight scenes were kind of like that. But the judo chop is a big thing. Austin Powers made fun of it for a reason. I wonder if it was maybe easier to train because you don't have to throw puns. And you could throw a punch and knock somebody out, right, by accident. I think doing the judo chops or the chops or whatever, maybe it's a little safer as a choreographer to not have them throwing a punch and the other actor knowing when to turn the head.

head or whatever you know with a chop maybe it's a little i don't know i I'm not a movie guy like that. Yeah, I just can't imagine it works in real life very well. No. I would love for you to just chop me instead of punch me in the face. Just chop me. Yeah, it would actually probably hurt your hand more than anything else.

So, man, I'm loving this. Like I said, the Italian connection, man, definitely. This set right here, once again, is a banger, and I'm going to keep talking about it. The Raro video, you can get the individual discs like Ian's got or this set right here. here which has caliber 9 the italian connection the boss and rulers of the city all four of those on one set man it's a banger

Uh, so far I've seen two of the four and both of them have been excellent movies, man. They're just been really strong. So it's like, man, I don't know how the other two are going to go in. Uh, who knows, but those two are worth that, that whole set.

alone just having them too but but what are the uh next episode what are we going to be covering on so did we want to do did we want to do both films or just one of them what do you think um let's just go ahead and knock it out we'll do both okay okay so we've got Ill boss, the boss with Henry Silva in it. And that will be the third one of the Milan milieu trilogy. Those three are considered the trilogy. And then this next one, rulers of the city, AKA Mr. Scar.

face with jack palance that's a different uh crime movie that delio directed but it is still part of the fernando delio collection from raro video the first volume so awesome and it also this one also has al cliber in it who you know from uh zombies and uh black cat the lucio fulci movies so and the beyond actually he's in the beyond as well so he's uh he's he's an actor you would all know and he plays a really uh major important part in this as well oh this is gonna be a blast

LOTC Presents Mortis Vision

LOTC presents Mortis Vision with Greg Amortis and the Twisted Tetris. Welcome to Mortis Vision with the Mortises. I'm your host, Greg Amortis, along with the Twisted Temptress herself. Hey. Pearl, what you up to, girl? I just finished watching a movie. You did. The movie...

It looked a lot because I've seen like the last five minutes of this movie looked similar to the show that we're going to be talking about tonight. Yeah, it kind of was. The eyes and stuff. So we'll get into it. But we're super excited. We've got a special guest on tonight, love. We definitely do. And I don't even know where this special person's at because he is... Unknown caller. That's right. We got the unknown caller on. What's up, unknown caller?

I feel like you're in the back of the house right now. I feel like you're looking at me right now. I feel eyes on me. I'm under the floorboards, baby. Well, if you are, you're down in Roberta's house because she's below us. Oh, hi, Roberta. Sorry, Roberta. Roberta, what are you wearing? Oh, my God.

Well, she's about 88, so she's probably not wearing much. Oh, but bam, bam. She's a sweetheart, though. We love Roberta. But no, tonight, listeners, we're super excited, man. If you're new to the show, by the way, let me get this out of the way first before we talk about it. If you're new to the show, welcome.

This is called Mortis Vision with the Mortises. And what we do is we talk about mostly made-for-television horror, or we talk about TV, right, Lo? Yes, TV series. Or we just do random chats. And tonight... unknown caller you came up with a cool little uh uh theme or not

Introducing Midnight Mass

theme necessarily but a tv series a mini series on top of that and uh it's 2021's mike flanagan's midnight mass so that's what we're going to talk about tonight We will be doing full-blown spoilers, listeners. So if you have not seen Midnight Mass, you need to go to Netflix and start watching the episodes. There's seven total. And we're going to get into these and break this big bad puppy down in LOTC fashion. We're going to spoil the Shazow out of it. Right, Pearl? Yes.

Why Midnight Mass? Themes Explored

it's gonna be fun i cannot wait so unknown i gotta understand or go to you man why midnight mass what struck you for this one the whole concept is very interesting um you know i always find it fascinating that people are always willing to put themselves in a situation that they can't get out of.

It seems to me like we've been warned enough not to go to an island with a bunch of people that are zealous over something. It just seems like you shouldn't do that. Probably not. It never ends well anyways.

No, no, no. But the religious concepts, you know, the ideas, the use of different religions and what people believe and a lot of the dialogue and a lot of the... moments where people are speaking about things uh it's just fascinating very fascinating agreed and we'll play a bumper here so you'll hear kind of the uh intro trailer i guess you could call it we'll play that so you you the listeners can hear that and

And I wish I had time. I'll be honest. I straight up, because we're recording again tomorrow night, and we've got to edit and get this out immediately. I would love to be able to put some clips in there, sound clips. But unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to have time to do that, so I apologize. This is just one of those series that is very super zealot. It's very religious toned and even the music.

Pearl is super religious. Lots of hymns and these type things playing in the background, which I thought added such a cool creepiness to the... to the episodes man was it creepy yes absolutely so let's let's break it down here we'll do this we'll just say we'll do imdb just as a generic but the whole thing is an isolated island community experiences miraculous events and frightening omens after the arrival of a charismatic mysterious young

priest uh once again this was created by mike flanagan who i am such a fan of this this individual he is such a a horror nut And he's one of us listeners. I'm telling you, he is definitely one of us and he gets it. He loves the community. He loves not. lotc i would hope he would but he loves the horror community and he loves horror movies and he gets it He has given us such stuff as Hush, the movie that I absolutely love and adore. That's where I first met.

Mike Flanagan, as far as a director. And I'm like, wow, what a movie. Uh, we also have Oculus absentia before I wake. He did Ouija origin of evil. Not as good. Gerald's Game, Pearl, he directed that from a Netflix series of Stephen King. Doctor Sleep. Yeah, Doctor Sleep. And, of course, Midnight Mass now. He's also got Midnight Club, The Fall of the... House of Usher and the life of Chuck.

Mike Flanagan: Director and Fan

uh among other a few other things he's got in there too a little short uh but man let me tell you let me go around the horn first we'll go to you pearl uh thoughts on mike flanagan as a director slash writer I think he's very creative. I think he tries to kind of tap into things that we don't normally pick up on and kind of make us think twice about something. And I love that. So I'm all for it.

Absolutely. How about you, Unknown Kyle, your thoughts about Mike Flanagan as a person? The Stephen Kingness of him is fascinating. You know, the fact that he uses his wife in a lot of his movies and TV shows and the overarching ideas that he always has Easter eggs in his shows or movies.

It's kind of fun to figure them out and find them. But yeah, to know that he is very passionate about this and to know that he's going to be the one that's going to bring us an actual good version of the Dark Tower. It makes me very excited. I am so excited about that because that's such a... And I've not read all the books. I've read the first three, okay? But...

From what I've read of them, I'm really intrigued in that series. And then we got that shitty movie that sucked balls. So it's like... To have Mike Flanagan come on board to do this, I'm super pumped about it. And here's the thing. When I said he's like one of us, like he's one of the nerds, I was watching a YouTube interview with Mike Flanagan and one of the other writers.

And they were asking him about the TV series, you know, this one, Midnight Mass, and different things. And it was funny because he mentioned how he got woken by a tweet. a retweet or a share from Stephen King. And he said it just floored him. And to see somebody like Mike Flanagan, who I feel has already established himself as a somewhat heavy hitter, right?

Still gets giddy like we do if a celebrity, and I'm air quoting like you guys can see that, but I'm air quoting celebrity, and he gets giddy about it. Like, oh, Stephen King just retweeted me. And that's who he is. like he is a fan first and then he's a director and writer and and a very lucky man to be married to such a beautiful beautiful woman in katie seagal uh yeah she is such a doll baby and and such an amazing She's an actress. We saw her originally Pearl and Hush.

And at the time, I did not know anything about Mike Flanagan. I didn't know anything about her. I just knew that she floored me with how good of an actress she plays a deaf mute. and it was like wow like tremendous right and then we know now she's married to mike flanagan and now you know she's been in other projects with him like you had mentioned and i love that dude i love that he uses her and

And, uh, she's so talented. That's one that's good to have in your back pocket, so to speak. You know, you can pull out a movie or show and, and have somebody as talented as her to, to kind of, you know, go ship you a little bit. I love that. Yeah, the fact that he bounced his ideas off of her. I listened to an interview with him, and he really confides in her and trusts her when it comes to making decisions. Yeah.

Absolutely. And I, I mean, I'll be honest, like this, this movie now, or this mini series that we're talking about, there's seven episodes listeners. So seven full episodes, they're a little over an hour each. So they are a little lengthy. all uh named after biblical books in the bible so you have that going on the first one first episode i should say being

Genesis, which is the first book in the Bible. And then you got book two, which is Psalms and book three, which is Proverbs book four, which is lamentations, uh, book five, which is gospel and which is. Let me say that's not really.

There's not a book in the Bible just called Gospel, but you got Gospel, and then you got book six called Acts of the Apostles, and then book seven called Revelation. So we start with the book of Genesis, we end with the book of Revelation, which you have in the Bible. This has been, as I read on this and heard Mike Flanagan talk, this was something that he has wanted to do, a passion project.

from the beginning and like as early as 2014 he wanted to do this this was something uh i guess he was uh brought up in a catholic uh belief a catholic church and uh having that and then he's since become an atheist and you know these different things so yes pearl you said gospels is not in the bible yes it is not the book of gospel No, but it's part of the Bible. It's supposed to be Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Yeah, but not the name, just gospel. You know what I mean?

oh so like yeah yeah because they had like psalms and different things so when they just said gospel i'm like well that's not an actual book but i get what you're saying pearl you're you're 100 right but just the name gospel was not just a book so It is the gospel of Paul. Yeah, it's been a while since I've been in church and I'm not a religious person like that. So I can't go through the books of the Bible for you anymore.

Uh, but anyway, so we get into this, this story here and we got the seven, uh, you know, seven episodes and we have this experience, uh, unknown of having a zealot.

island I mean like these are an island of super religious people and we got Mike Flanagan who had been wanting to write this story and wanted to direct this story like he wanted to get this out to the public because it spoke to him coming from like I said a religious background and then becoming an atheist and you would think like in this series it's very I don't want to say anti-religion because it's not

But it definitely has, what would you call it? I mean, it's not, say, an anti-religion. It is a very religious... series because there's so much scripture being quoted there's so many uh hymns it takes place pretty much all the time at a church a mass and so you're being you know bombarded with religion right yeah yeah i think there's uh it's kind of an exercise in people's own beliefs and how they can change how they can become something stronger or weaker and really trusting in someone

and believing them to lead you down a path. But also, you know, the fact that there are Muslims in this show, and what they believe, and the... interesting aspect of introducing the Bible into school is brought up and how that can reflect things. It's interesting because Mike Flanagan said that they started filming, I believe, two months before COVID hit.

And it really reflected a lot of what was going on, but it can still apply to almost anything that's going on in any situation and how you deal with certain situations. Oh, totally. You agree with that, Pearl? I do. I feel like... I mean, of course, when you're like listening to the story, it kind of seems a little more personal compared to like showing something. But it seems like kind of like a misguided face. So it's like once you get into it, you start.

like you would in anything in life. You kind of start on your own picking sides. Yeah, I've mentioned this about how when I was in church back in the day and how I felt, you know, kind of... cultish like you know i was led to go a certain direction You start believing the Kool-Aid that they're feeding you, right? Like you start believing all these things. And then once you kind of have light shone down on you and you kind of step back and look at it, you're like, wow.

Like, dude, that was crazy. Like, how did I fall for some of these things, right? And it becomes that moment. And I think what we'll do this way, there's one character, and Pearl's going to absolutely...

Midnight Mass Character Introductions

want to bang in on this one character, and the character is Bev King. Bev! Oh, God. Played by Samantha Sloan, who is a tremendous actress. Yes. Holy crap. She acted her busy ass off on this thing. she scared the shit out of me exactly like dude she is one of the most villainous characters in in modern times in my opinion like this woman and she reminded us pearl of who The lady from The Mist? Yes. The exact... If you've ever seen the movie...

Yes, the movie The Mist. There is a woman who ends up, because there's creatures and there's this whole takeover of this town. Everybody's locked into this, or at least everybody that we see are locked into this grocery store, and we have this one zealot religious lady that rises up and starts preaching gospel, and she starts getting a following.

And then to the point that she becomes like a leader. And this is Bev. Like, Bev is that woman. Bev becomes like the... mouthpiece of this community and she's all about scripture she's all about being you know religious and and it's by the letter of the law of the religion and you know if you don't follow it then you are you're a heathen you're a sinner you know you don't belong here kind of deal right

Yeah, I think she also had a flair of like Carrie White's mom. Because everything that happened that gave her a reason to believe.

something was a miracle is what also faced her to be like okay the devil's here don't don't look or the or this is happening or this you know that made her want to be that leader and be like no i see everything well her character in this one is you will very quickly know who she is and that but but i think the first character that we should really talk about is zach gilford who is who we're first uh introduced to is riley flynn right he we see at the very beginning of this series in episode one

how that there's a car crash, and he's obviously drunk, and he ends up seeing the face of this girl who dies. And he ends up being prosecuted and spends some time in jail, four years, I believe, in prison. And he's part of this community that we end up following, this, what is it, Crockett?

I believe it's called the Crockett Island. We are introduced to Zach. We kind of, I say Zach, we're introduced to Riley, not Zach. Zach's his real name, but we're introduced to Riley Flynn. And then we kind of flash forward. him getting out of prison right and we see him making his homecoming and people are looking at him oddly uh i love his family uh unknown who's his father

Oh, my goodness. Elliot. Yes, Elliot. It took me a second to realize, and then when I did, I was like, oh, my God, he got old. Yes, Henry Thomas is looking very old in this episode. series but and here it is like his character um He's playing a distraught father, right? I think he's playing a father who is definitely religious and zealot as well, but he's also, you can tell, embarrassed by his son. what he had done. And I think he's kind of shunning his son because of the

you know, what he had done in this community. Like, this is a very tight-knit community, and what you did was take the life of somebody. And this father... once again played by henry thomas you can tell there's a dinner moment at the very beginning when he first comes in and the mom you know is talking to him and his brother and the dad you can tell does not want anything to do with this guy

He just looks like he's like, I don't even know my son anymore. He went to prison almost like he was ready to wash his hands of him, right? Yeah, he's a good blue-collar fisherman that just has his beliefs and he's very grounded. The journey he takes and the changes he makes are very interesting with his son and also with the community.

Agreed, 100%. And then the mom, who's Annie Flins, played by Kristen Lehman, who played a really good part in this one as well. Let me just say, I'm going to say it about all of them. There was not a bad... acting moment in this one the acting was was superb like chef's kiss yes everyone everyone knew their character everyone knew how to flex their character um i was i was blown away yes and

The one thing is all the characters mattered in this series as well, right? Yeah. Now, not every... I'm not going to say this is like a 100,000 community. There's not that many, but... Almost everybody that you would think has moments in this series that you get to know each. And I thought Mike Flanagan handled that so perfectly. Like you get to learn about, you know, the young girl who's paralyzed and we even get to find out what happens with her. So there's.

All these characters are introduced and all these characters have their moments and their time in a seven short series episode of a miniseries. He spends just enough time to make you invest in every one of them and it works. Yeah, and Mike Flanagan has said that Riley really is an avatar for him. It's basically him as a character. And the changes that he went through when he was an alcoholic and what happened to him.

And how that really made him make huge life decisions. And it's very interesting what happens to the Riley character. In an interview I listened to, Riley was going to be a completely different type of character. There was even going to be a sequel to this TV show where he was going to be the antagonist in a traveling religious show, like a tent.

like a revival tent. He was going to be going around and he was going to be the one changing people, which I thought was very interesting. Ooh, that would be cool to see him trying to convert, man. Yeah. Because I like Zach Gifford. I thought he was great in this, man. He's kind of the...

timid recovered alcoholic he's going to aa in this uh series and he's trying to clean himself up and uh the father like i mentioned of henry thomas you know the father's like even making a moment where there's a scene the first night he comes back home and he sits him down in the bedroom and says look you're going to mass tomorrow

like whether you like it or not you're going and they're going to tell you to come up and do communion you're not going to take part of this because it's not right for you to take part of this your mom's going to want you to do it but you're going to say no and you're going to like he's

It's like, wow, powerful stuff here, man. Just really powerful. And then we'll break down these episodes, but I'm just trying to get the characters in here. So you got Kirsten Lehman, who plays Annie, the mom. And then we got the brother. Warren, who's played by Igby Rigney. Really cool character. We don't get to spend a lot of time with him, but we do get to see him in some moments. I think it's a really cool Pearl kind of brother moment there, right? Yeah. And he's good, too.

He is, definitely. Yeah. All right, so then we go from there, and we have already mentioned Bev. The sheriff, Sheriff Hassan, who you mentioned about the Muslim family, and that is Rahul Kohli. Rahul Kohli, I guess is how you say his name.

uh him and his son are the two uh muslim of the community right and roe plays the the sheriff in this one and there's some moments with him there's definitely some tension there's some moments because of his faith and his religion bumping heads with the Bev and her religion right yeah his son is not really

gung-ho about the religion and uh so the dynamic between the two of them is very interesting a little divided but it gets stronger towards the end um i feel like that the kids in this are played so well that they feel like teenagers they look like teenagers too which is great you know and you've got the wonderful bike riding scenes that we always get like in a Stephen King book or movie and

You know, the sense of community is very strong and they're kind of outliers in that community. And I know that even when the kids are getting together to go up and, you know, kind of smoke some weed.

now one of them looks at the other one and says what did you invite him like why why is he coming and so um you know it's it's very well played yeah totally uh then we got aaron green who's played by kate siegel mike flanagan's wife and uh such a cool character in this one she comes into town or she's from the town but she had

ventured off and she's come back and she's pregnant and she's also we find out i guess had had you know some previous time with riley as well there was definitely some closeness between those two that we find out so we got kate and then we go into a few other ones i think um

Let's go ahead and do the Doctor, Annabeth Gish, who plays Dr. Sarah Gunning. She ends up playing a key role in this series eventually. I like her character. She's kind of the... the local doctor think of little house on the prairie pearl you watch it all the time yeah it's kind of like the traveling doctor you know they're on you know you can just go knock on her door at any time and she'll just right there at house okay put the stethoscope on yep

got this wrong with you or you know it's kind of a close-knit because they're on an island so it's not like you're going to a major hospital or anything The dynamic of her having to deal with her mother and the situation there is really interesting, too. Yes, and that's the next character is Mildred Gunning, who is the mom played by Alex. esso and she's aging like we see her old but what happens for her she tastes the

The blood on the communion thing. She's taking the communion. Like all the whole community is doing. And she starts... having changes power juice she starts feeling better yeah she starts feeling better she starts getting young quick and i mean by the end of this she looks like the daughter of of the doctor and it's the mom like it's crazy uh so we have her let's see who else we should look at uh i think we got to look at uh main character in my opinion this is

Oh, my God, dude. This dude should have got a freaking Oscar for his performances in this one. And it's Father Paul Hill, a.k.a. Monsignor Pruitt. And he's played by Hamish Linklater. Golly, get that name out. Hamish Linklater. What a freaking dude. He made this show. What a fucking actor, man. I mean, you fully believe.

He is that character. It is unbelievable. Yes. His performance is like he is the father, quote, Monsignor, whatever you want to call him. And there's moments when he's preaching in the mass and doing these things.

that he has such a a amazing ability to make you just listen and you're like wow i would totally follow this guy whatever he's he's feeding me yes i'm with you because you sound very convincing and very promising and I loved his character and I love where his character ends up becoming and what we find out the revelations of this guy I thought was

you know just a chef kiss to the sky i just didn't see it necessarily coming we see it throughout the series because he they give us these flashback moments or whatever you want to call them moments but you know once it's revealed you're like holy Who else do we want to talk about in here? Because Raul Aburi is Ali, the sheriff's son. You've got the family with D with the crippled girl. Okay, yes, let's do that one. Liza.

Scarborough, who is played by Anara Simone. She plays a young teenage girl who is paraplegic. And we don't know how or why, but we eventually get revealed why she is paraplegic. So I liked that they brought that up. She wasn't born that way. She was, you know. you know caused that way and we have her family her parents and um god there's so many characters i can't even remember what their mom what we've

The man that caused her accident, the town drunk. Yes, yes. He's fantastic. Yeah, I agree. He was very... uh he plays that character of being a drunk so and you can tell that he kind of has lived with his shame and with the guilt and

to the point that there's a scene uh we'll get into it later but there's a scene where she actually goes to meet him in his trailer quote unquote she's like i just wanted to see it and it's exactly the way i felt it would be you know because he's living in just a freaking very tiny trailer it's it's

it just don't look good and she's you know praying and excited that that's exactly what happened to him because you know what a strong scene what a strong scene her her her strength in that scene really shows through and he He takes it. He takes it like a man because he knows what he did was wrong and he's broken by it.

And she made sure to let him know how she feels. That was the thing. Like there is a moment, and this is where I would put in some clips. If I had the time, I apologize. I shouldn't even mention it because now you're going to be like, well, damn, Greg, you should have put them in there. I should have. But I'm just not going to end up having the time. But there's the scene where she's talking to him, right? And she's mentioning to him about how that, you know...

She was just living her life. You know, they were having fun and doing whatever. And then all of a sudden there was a bang and she couldn't feel anything because he had clearly shot her and it went through her spine and severed her. uh core or spinal cord or whatever and she's paraplegic immediately from that moment right and it's that moment where she tells him you know i hate you i hate you i hate everything about you

You know, you have caused me this pain and this torture, and I will never forgive you. I can't forgive you. I will, you know, I hate you. And it's so powerful. Tears in her eyes. And you see tears in his eyes because, like you said, on he's he's agreeing 100 i did this and there's nothing i can say that would make it better right like you he's living with this and i thought that was so so freaking powerful man that scene is in proverbs oh yeah which means wisdom

there you go yeah uh so man such a powerful moment such a a needed moment in this series because we're learning who all these people are right and we needed to know what happened to her uh so

I think any other characters you want to mention right offhand before we just go ahead and break into the episodes? No, I think you hit all the major beats and the people and what's going to... happen and move forward i'm looking real quick just to see if we missed anybody um we're good we're good i think we'll mention the angel Let's mention who the angel is. Was it really an angel, though? Was it? No, it's CGI. But listen, hey, the angel's cool, but it's Quentin.

Boyce Claire. So we're giving you your credit, dude. Mike Flanagan, he loves this show so much that he kept the wings. In his garage. They are in his garage. Can you imagine opening the garage door and seeing those wings looking at you? Well, are they tore? I would think so. I mean, that's what happens. I will say this. I need to ask Justin Beam. Justin Beam has been in Mike Flanagan's house, dude. Holy shit. Dude, I am so – I'm telling you, when Justin came to stay with us, Pearl –

So many times I wanted to rub my elbow against him and just say, I just want to get some of that off of me, man. Like, dude, you have been in Mike Flanagan's freaking house. He has seen, because this, Mike Flanagan, listeners, if you do not know, is a huge. collector of props and and memorabilia like dude this guy has like he would basically be like the ed warren of of our time like he has these kind of objects in his house like dude he's he's insanely a collector i love that about him

Episode 1: Genesis Breakdown

So that he has the wings, I could totally see that happening for sure. So what we're going to do, let's break in this series a little bit. Now, we won't go point for point, but we'll go through each. We'll go through each episode and kind of break it down, right, Pearl? Yeah. So I think what we'll do, and I'm going to let Pearl kind of go into some of these as well, and we'll just go back and forth. So first season.

We have episode one, which is once again called the gospel. And the gospel, Pearl, what did we see in that early on? Pearl gave me that look like, what the fuck are you talking about gospel? That ain't first. Let's put Noah before... Okay, go ahead. We're just introducing it then? Yeah, we can just talk about kind of what we're seeing at the beginning and then we'll go through it. Okay, and in the book of one, Genesis, we are introduced to a car crash, an unforgettable scene.

where you are introduced to a guy named Riley who is staring at the scene you see a girl motionless and continues to be motionless until you see the ambulance put her in the in the truck and of course covered up so you know that she has passed due to that he has been taken to prison for four years And he gets a book of the Bible with letters from his mother, his family, saying they miss him. They can't wait to see him because he will soon be released.

Now, he's not too happy about being released because he has a dysfunctional family and a lot of familiar faces that he does not even care about except for one, which is Aaron, who happens to be a childhood friend and someone that he's always...

had a heart for. There is one new face that he doesn't recognize and it is a new priest in town. There is a huge storm coming into town that they will be preparing for and he's... comes in the midst of it meanwhile as as he's coming home and getting to adjust it and everything he also noticing that there's something a little strange going on you know he likes to go by the end of the beach line to see like

you know the sunrise that was always his thing and the boats around there there's fishermen etc etc he keeps having dreams of the girl that you know that he killed and he's still living with his regrets And then something is going on where he's having premonitions. Now, you kind of find out, are they going to be premonitions or are they just dreams? Because he also does see himself sitting on a boat alone looking at the sunrise.

Later on that night, you kind of hear something swooping from the sky. You don't see what it is, but you hear it. And poor little kitty, all you hear was milk. That was it. Until the next morning, everyone astonished why they seen something on the beach. It turns out that there are a whole bunch of cats. Yeah, that's quite an image. Yeah, the forecast. Yeah, the amount of animal death, if that's a trigger for you,

I would suggest you don't watch this. There's a very horrible dog death, and then the amount of cats that are washing up on the shore. You know something weird is going on. I thought it was interesting that Mike Flanagan did say that this was kind of an ode to Storm of the Century, and I could see that. I was going to bring that up.

Yeah. Even with the police station being in the back of the general store, which I thought was hilarious. Wow. The fact that you mentioned that, because I was going to ask like legit. uh it has so much storm of the century vibes because of what you just said so uh that's interesting you brought that up man that's really cool because that that totally felt storm of the century to me

Give me what I want and I'll go away. Yeah, even with the guy. I'm like, dude, this is straight up. Like, wow, okay, all right. Hey, homage. You know, he's a huge Stephen King fan, so maybe he used some of that. I don't know. I'm totally down for it if he did. I'm okay with that. Oh, my God. So, yeah, that first episode, man, I thought was very powerful, man. It was 59 minutes long. We got a lot of background. I love the moments with Riley.

when he tries to go to bed. I love the moments where he can't sleep. You just see it. He always, you know, every time you see it throughout the whole series, he lays down, he looks, and he sees the face of the girl with glass around her.

and and that to me I feel would be realistic right like if you took somebody's life especially you know via drunk driving or whatever I'm sure that that would completely be on your mind 24 7 and yeah the fact that he's laying sideways and you're gonna have to cock your head to look at him and the the excellent use of jump scares i mean i don't usually jump but Some of that made me jump. The cinematography in this thing is 100% top-notch. The color palette is perfect.

The set pieces, this was in British Columbia over in Canada. It's a beautiful set. It feels very isolated. It feels very islandish. It looks beautiful. It's got these darker hues. It's just a gorgeous filmed and amazingly acted series, man, 100%. And I think this first episode was a banger. I think it gave us everything we needed to invest. I think the one thing we forgot was the town drug dealer. He is the first victim. True. So, you know, it's...

We learned that there definitely is something flying around that's taking care of people, and that scene, he is a goner. Yep. So I love it. I loved it. First episode, amazing. great job. I'm invested. I'm like, okay, let's get to episode two. Let's see what happens. Uh, is this going to be, you know, just a one-off and then the rest of the episodes are going to be kind of, eh, oh no.

Episode 2: Psalms Breakdown

Oh no, it only gets better listeners. Uh, we get into episode two and let's head over to you, uh, uh, unknown caller. Maybe you can introduce episode two to us. Let us know about Psalms. All right. Well, Psalms, I believe we get more involved in the father coming back and him reinstituting the church and getting people to come back.

something's going on. I find it fascinating that when we do get the reveal of who he really is, that only a few people recognize him. The doctor's mother is definitely one of them later on. But he has come back a changed man in more ways than one. He has been enlightened, shall we say. So the idea that this town needs hope...

They're starting to see strange things. Obviously, the cats really scared everybody. So he's going to try and give them solace and hope by coming to church and looking to the Lord for help. I think the moments with the father, the new priest, I think were the most powerful moments in these. in every episode like his just his acting ability and the believability i felt like i was in church every time i was watching a series you know episode i felt like okay this guy's giving me a sermon and

By damned it, I'm listening because I'm like, I believe him. Well, in this episode, you do see him kind of getting around town pretty quickly. Like, you know, he starts talking to Riley and having sessions every day with him. To talk about like what's on his mind. He knows he's hurting. He knows he has guilt. Blah, blah, blah. Then you see him go to Sarah's house and wants to meet the mom because he hears that she is sick. And he comes prepared. To give her mass. To give her mass and...

Anything else? Power juice, like I said. Power juice. This is going to be the phrase of the night. Power juice, Pearl's called it. Power juice. Power juice. I love that. And then every now and then.

you see Erin like she you see her in her kitchen you see her in the bathroom which I've seen but you see her in there and you know every time she looks out the window she thinks she sees someone in which someone is there but you just can't see who yeah so it's like yeah little tidbits of stuff uh love this episode man this one right here uh because we're we're being introduced to the priest now we're being introduced to the father and we you know and he's mentioning that that monsignor you know

know has fallen ill and you know he's he's there for a time taking his spot right he's kind of taking his place Wink, wink, nod, nod. I'm just going to take his place for a little while. He's going to be fine, but I'm going to be here for a little while. And Bev is right on his corner, right? She's right there with him. like dude i'm bowing to you already you are i am your uh faithful follower you tell me to do this i will do this oh my god bev blind face

Yep, Bev is all about this community, though. Let's get into episode three, Pearl. We're going to go into the book of Proverbs. What we got on that one? This one?

Episode 3: Proverbs Breakdown

actually gives you a lot more. This one gives you a little more inside detail also on the priest's side. You see him going into his own confession. Like he goes into the room and he starts confessing everything. Like he's obviously alone talking to himself, but he's still full-blown confession. And you kind of find out about, like he speaks about miracles that are coming.

how you know how he wants to improve and change things and wants to make sure like man knows what's coming he he's very sure that you know the goodness for resurrection You know, he speaks about like, he caused a miracle.

you know which is lisa um where she's obviously she's on the wheelchair and then he says no you can walk you know and what a moment that was by the way yeah and the look on her face like she was you could tell she was fearful to even take a step she was she had the shocking look on her face like wait a minute like

really it was just this easy to get up and walk like right like he wasn't even necessarily saying anything he's trying to give her the bread of life or whatever the wafer and he walks up to her and then backs up and you know the crowd's looking at him and he's like

motioning for her to come to her right and she's looking at him strange and odd like what the fuck you talking about i'm in a wheelchair i can't walk to you and then she starts rolling to him he's on he steps up the stairs you know the the altar and i'm like And now everybody's shocked. They're like, what are you doing? Like, she can't walk. And then that moment happens, like you mentioned, Pearl, that miracle. Holy crap, I was floored. I was like, what happened here? Yeah, and it's like...

That was his way of making everyone start to become a believer. Back to Wallace. I believe he truly believes that he is there to save everyone. But that's the thing. He is. He has this right mind frame that he thinks this is what I am meant to do and I will do it. Good point. Which is one point that you will notice that when it comes to any part of his doing.

He wants the door closed because he wants that one-on-one to be able to speak with the person, to be able to make sure they can handle something. Closed doors are an importance to him. And you kind of... you know and her i mean she's living life now like like she's excited suddenly she can run walk everything normal she goes out in the middle of the night with riley's brother and they go and hang out in the middle of night

And then during this whole moment comes her next powerful scene where she goes and confronts John, the one who shot. you know her and her dad you know the one who made her be in this wheelchair she comes to say i forgive you and still angry but forgives him because to her she knows she learned the wisdom of what god's trying to say if god can forgive then why can't i yeah so i forgive you i will be angry but i still forgive you and that made him

cry and made him have some type of release to you know maybe find his way back somehow now we also got sarah's mom who all of a sudden is starting to look a little bit more rejuvenated And guess what gets out of bed and she's able to walk around with a cane. Power juice. Power juice. That damn power juice. And then with one last attempt of that power juice.

To show Bev and a few little small group that came into the priest's place. He decides to die in front of their eyes. And show them the miracle. To show them the way. So he wants to show them that darkness is nothing. That the blood of light is flown. As an angel has once told him. You drink. Drink. This is my blood.

Blood of the new. So this is the new, and this is the way, and this is how it must be. He talks about the transformation of Saul's fall in the Bible, and he truly believes that he has had a moment like that. yes and that was something like this there's a lot to unpack in this episode this is one of the most yeah one of the most squeezed in episode because, like you said, you had the Lisa thing going on. You also have that moment with the sheriff, right?

uh, being Muslim and finding the Bible in his son's brief or in his bookcase or book bag. And we have that moment where the father's like, you know, what's going on here, right? And they even had that town meeting, right, in this episode where he speaks up about the Bible being given out freely.

and how that he's kind of against that and we have the town being a little bit divided right unknown because some of them are agreeing with them like you know this is a private school i mean a public school we shouldn't be you know solely giving out just the bible everybody should have their own belief right and he's trying to explain to the

and let's be honest it's not the community it's beverly uh he's trying to explain to beverly like you know you passed out this bible to my kid who you know we are devout muslims we shouldn't be given this right and we have that moment unknown i thought was really for sure yeah he even mentions like what if what if every child got a copy of the Quran you know and you know he tries to reason and tries to reason that

You know, it's okay for people to have beliefs, but it shouldn't be part of the curriculum of the school. And she just slams that door in his face. And we also see that moment where the sheriff backs down. And we find out in another episode coming up why he backed down. You know, we get that powerful moment where he explains that. So, okay, so we got that. And then you're mentioning, Pearl, about how the priest makes that.

miraculous because we start seeing him have these headaches he's dizzy he falls he there's some things going on with him right and then we see where he dies and then you're like whoa yeah everyone's in a panic beverly and all the rest of them you know they're looking like what do we do now what happened he wasn't you know he wasn't that bad why he you know and then a few minutes later it's like

And we have the flashbacks, right? Would you call them a flashback where we're seeing the Monsignor, you know, the older? Yeah, that's where he's doing the confessions, you know, and he's talking about what was told to him by the other priests and then what he experienced. Yeah, would you call that a flashback? Yeah, I mean, I think so.

You know, the hints are there, but we needed that in context to understand really what was going on. And you can kind of tell that the wheels are spinning. And Bev said she accidentally even calls him on senior.

so we know what's going on in her mind too but yeah the context of it i think everything is weaved together so well that it just flows in a way that you it's like peeling an onion yeah just layer by layer yep loved it this was a great episode and we saw the first viewing of the angel which was wicked dude crashing into the rooftop You think that was all practical effects? Because that was very, very well done. It was very well done. I don't know. It looked CGI to me.

But at the same time, there had to be some practical effects in there. And I feel like Mike Flanagan would probably use all practical. Maybe someone got catapulted. Whee! Whee! Whee! Whatever happened.

dude i'm telling you it looks spotless so the angel looks wicked as hell uh don't know where he kind of wait i actually do he kind of looks like the full moon guy from one of the shows from uh mike flanagan's other series yeah if you go back and look at um not hush but uh the gerald's game yeah there's a character over there so there's you know there's a drawback to that so anyways angel looks wicked

But we're introduced to angel, quote, unquote. Here I go doing the air quotes again. Y'all can see them. Yeah, everybody but you can see them, bro. Air quotes. We see angel and we see what happens with. with the father here where he resurrects, or I guess you'd call it resurrect. Great episode. They're making a live-action Gargoyles TV show. I would love for the team that... design that angel to work on that show. That would be fantastic. Absolutely, dude. Make that happen.

Episode 4: Lamentations Breakdown

All right, so let's get into episode four. There's seven full episodes, listeners. So let's get into episode four, The Book of Lamentations. And let's go to you, unknown, what you got in episode four. Okay, well, we have Erin. She's still very excited about her pregnancy. She has been drinking some power juice, so...

We know what that's doing to other people. And so when she goes for a routine checkup, the doctor discovers something very interesting. The womb is empty. There's nothing there. Right. And so, of course, her gut reaction, for lack of a better word, is she's scared. She doesn't understand what's going on. So we know that Father Paul is... He says, I feel everything that is happening here is a matter of faith, not science. And so everything is going according to plan. But...

Aaron's blood also boils in the sun, which is a really, really good use of effects. And so that's why this episode is called Lamentations. It's a book that is all about the destruction of Jerusalem. And Eric, I'm reading from Wikipedia here, it says, Erin chalks up to self-pity and her resentment over becoming a mom. Her mother felt that her motherhood clipped her wings. That's very important.

and kept her from flying free. Her mother's bitterness and abuse led her to run away. Yet she couldn't get away from her mother and ending up marrying a man just like her. So what was it all for? So it's a very Aaron-heavy episode. Yeah, definitely. This one, yeah, and I'm okay with that. I like watching Erin, and I'm good with following her and seeing all the things going on in that. We also have the...

Sarah's mom recognizing Paul as as Pruitt for sure like she's like straight up you are the Monsignor I know you are kind of moment there so that was kind of cool What made you think of that moment with Aaron, though? Like, imagine going in to gain a sonogram for your baby and finding nothing. Absolutely nothing. Maybe it was a miscarriage. No. So it's like what happened? Did it eat itself? What happened to like you know that's the only little slight unexplained.

theory in this whole thing yeah because the whole moment you know she she seen the sonogram pictures she she felt the kicks she knew there was a child in her right yeah there was no doubting that but then the one doctor tells her uh no you know your levels you've never been pregnant you've never had a child and like wait a minute what are you talking about i know i felt these i know what i felt you know and then like you said is it

something going on that maybe the child was eaten or something and and we know now or we will know soon about the blood situation so maybe it did well that's the only thing that came up on this episode was sarah found out that what's wrong with the blood because seen a vial like suddenly burned because the sun hit it and from there she's like whoa

There's no answer to it. Yeah, something's going on. Good episode, man. I like this one. There again, I'm totally cool with watching Erin do her thing. uh the revealings of what's going on on this episode uh unknown was really cool in this one is this the episode two where she's sitting with riley and she talks about her her idea of heaven and meeting her daughter there

I believe it is, right? Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is one, yeah, because Riley does his first, right? He goes into his explanation of where... He asks questions for her. He asks her. And then he... kind of disappeared from there. What a great monologue. They never cut away from her face and the camera just slowly closes in on her. She's talking about that. It was very powerful. It was. And then we get that moment back again.

episodes yeah that one uh so it was really good so yeah very powerful this is every God dang, I keep saying it. Every episode's a banger. And that one, I should have told you, that one was September 24th. I hadn't given any dates. All these were September 24th releases, I'm assuming. I guess they released us all at one time. Yeah, but I think back then Netflix dumped it.

everything at once right yeah i think we watched like the first episode or two when this first came out and then for some reason we didn't go back to it i can't remember why Probably my laziness, but... No, because the same thing happened that happened last time that we were going to watch it and it paused on us. For some reason, it wasn't showing the rest of the episodes. We had to wait a few days and it came on again. We straight up watched episode one a few days ago. Go to watch episode one.

Episode two and it's gone. And it kept saying, you know, not, uh, I'll fair, uh, I'll air a file error. And we're like, what the hell? So we waited like two days and then finally. It popped back up, and I'm like, what the hell is going on with Netflix? They drank the juice. It was the power juice. They needed more power juice. All right, Pearl, let's get into episode five.

Episode 5: The Gospel Breakdown

Book five, the gospel. Well, in this one, we see more of the angel. He actually ends up coming down and feeding right on Riley. What? Well, it happens because... The angel walks in where the priest is at. And you see him go straight to a cup and he just pours his blood in there, like refilling it, like more power juice.

And suddenly you see Riley coming in and the priest turns around and looks at him like, oh. And the moment he said, oh, that angel turned around and flew right to him and started feeding on him. Boom. Yep, and then breaks his neck. What I did read was this was supposed to be Aaron. This is where the show changes. Oh.

Mike Flanagan originally had this conceived as a novel in 2010. And then like you mentioned before, in 2014 is when it started to build steam. And it was going to be basically the entire story was going to be about Aaron. Riley was going to be there. but Aaron was going to be the one that had to deal with being... being attacked by the angel. And then she was going to be the one that was going to take him on the boat and show him something that we do see later in another episode. Wow.

wow go ahead pro because i'll come back to that but go ahead and finish i didn't mean to cut it no no you're fine you're fine but i'll circle back to that here in a second go ahead

Well, this is where we go back to where the priest, you see him close the door, and he stays with him the entire time until he wakes up. You see already his morning lights out there, you know, he's telling him he can't, like... go out there he said right now is the time all questions all answers truth out everything you know so of course he asked him some questions tells him everything knight approaches again and he telling him like you know

You are what you are now. And he had proof for him. He had Bev come in, you know, of course, you know, same thing, get closer and closer. The closer she got, the more he can hear her heartbeat. He can see the veins on her neck.

Which was cool because they would light it. It kind of was translucent, just beaten. And that was really cool the way they did that. Well, it was funny because to me, for some reason, I don't know why because that's the way my brain works. But to me, I found that's a metaphor of the cats because...

their eyes glowed like a cat you know they see the vision of the night and for some reason i thought you know what he was always feeding on cats that angel that maybe that's why the reflective eyes kind of deal maybe he needed to cast to see at night better or something i don't know but that's my theory um you see sarah's mom mildred starts Even looking a lot younger because that power juice is so great. She's a stone cold fox now. Right? Hell yeah. Grandma love, baby. They call it a guilt. Yes.

Yeah, she's healthier. She's walking around more. She's even up for going to mass. And even Bev sees her and starts looking at her and she's all, wow, I heard about it. I didn't realize it. It's a miracle. She's all, do you just love miracles? And then she starts quoting her some revelation.

and then but you know what at the end of it you start seeing mildred come out and she thought i am never coming back i do this is not my mask that's not my priest i do not like this so she had an awkward feeling from already from start yeah there's there's the the the way she's looking at him while he's talking. And he says, what is otherwise horrible is good, and because of where it's headed.

Welcome to God's army. We're going to do great things. So now we understand what he's up to. He wants to build this army and that's terrifying to her. That's not the man she knows. And then this, I would honestly say, personally, this is my favorite part of the whole series. You know, Riley, everyone's been looking for him. He's been missing. Of course, some know where he's at.

But, you know, once he's told everything, truth and all, yada, yada, you know, he opens the doors, lets him go, tells him, okay, you know, from here, you make your decisions, you make, you know, et cetera. Riley knows something's wrong. He's looking at the world nearly. You know, he's seeing lights in the sky. He's seeing things different, you know, maybe beautiful, but still different. He finally decides to go to Erin and knock on her door.

And says, I want to do what we used to do. I want to go out on the boat. I need to talk to you. There's something I have to say to you, and I want to do it on the boat and cash. She didn't cash him when he said, I want to see one last sunrise. And she just, okay, you know, went ahead with him. and there they are out on the boat beautiful moonlight he's talking he's asking questions or he's telling her like stuff she asked him questions he's you know confiding in her

Now the stuff that he is saying, he's being truthful, but she's looking at him like, what? Like, you know, somewhere there, like, maybe are you drunk? Or maybe off something? Until it starts getting brighter. The sun is slowly coming up and right at that moment before he even touches his skin, he sees the face of the dead girl and she puts her hand out.

And that moment, you know that she was there to forgive him and take him to peace. And that's himself, too, where he's forgiven because he decided... to kill himself off rather than live that way and rather than be a creature or something but right in front of Aaron's face as the sun's coming up he starts you know turning to ashes back to dust yeah

I love this. It's so powerful. What a great way to not only end a character, but have the impact on the other character. Aaron now has a different view of what's going on. but also the fact that you now realize that everyone is expendable. No one is safe. Yeah, there you go. That was the biggest shock to me was the fact that him getting attacked, first of all. getting bit i did not see coming and then it's like holy crap like we're following riley's character and then all of a sudden

We're three, four episodes, five episodes in. Dude, he's dead now. I'm like, what the fuck? I know. The moment you talked about Pearl when they're on the boat. i thought was like you said powerful and here's the thing they had that beautiful moment you talked about where the girl was there to hold his hand and the music is so beautiful and then it goes from being beautiful to the

god-awfulest scream of Erin screaming bloody murder because she's watching Riley burn right in front of her. That transition was freaking phenomenal. I mean, you got like a... you know on riley's side it's angelic he's seeing this and he's feeling peace and it's like and then on the other side you got aaron just screaming bloody murder because she's watching the death of this person it's like nothing left of him but that's just like what are you

gonna do what is there to do there's a lot to unpack on this episode by the way let's go back to where you talked about i think we got to do this the moment when riley is attacked And the moment where Father Pruitt is talking to him and explaining what all is going to happen, right? The moment when Beverly comes in, this is the first time we saw Beverly question Father Pruitt.

because he's like going to let her let him go and she's like you know we shouldn't do that you know we need to keep him at least another day and he's like no he needs to have free uh free will he needs to be able to choose his path and she's like yeah but we should not do that we should give him at least another

day or two and you see that tension all of a sudden like that that's the moment that we see beverly becoming like i'm the leader of this community is the way i felt like you better do what i say But the father stands up and was like, no, we're letting him go. And then we see what happens, right? And in a way, she was right because he had wrote letters to the father. And there's different things that he did do that would have revealed.

what was going on behind the scenes, right? Yeah. So it could have done some things to hinder what they were trying to do, correct? Yeah. So I see her point, but at the same time, we do see that division popping up. So what I wanted to mention, and we're going to circle back what she was talking about early, Anon, was what if they did do this instead of the Riley story? This was the Aaron story.

I wanted, like, Pearl, do you think, I mean, God. I think it would have been where Riley becomes the hero because he loved her so much. and it was always her, that he would have invested and investigated, and he would have done something about it. Kind of similar like her. Yeah, you know, the idea that there would have been a second season, and he would have been the antagonist, like I said, so he must...

work with the angel and they must go all over the country and try and convert people. So just building an army, even so it becomes more of a stand. than Storm of the Century, you know? So it's very interesting the transition that would have taken. I'm glad it didn't happen. I think that this is perfect the way it is. Yeah. It's... It's really fascinating when you delve deep into these things and see how people, how they change things and characters. And Mike Flanagan actually...

talked to his wife about this and said, you know, what do you think about this? And she's really the one that made the decision and helped him realize that this is the way it should be. Well, here's my thing. I wish they would have filmed it both ways. Because I agree that it's perfect the way it is, but I still would have liked to have seen the alternate version of this and have followed Aaron's story instead of Riley's.

and seeing what the impact would have been i would have liked to seen that i would have loved to seen that uh but i am glad that we got what we got don't get me wrong but uh so we got angel in this one again we've got the death of riley we've got a lot going on man we're seeing a little bit of division between beverly and father pruitt like dude this this episode right here is like the reveal of reveals like this is like

Episode 6: Acts of Apostles Breakdown

an epic episode and then we go into and we'll head to you unknown caller book six acts of the apostle or apostles i should say and what we got going on yeah apostles so So obviously Aaron's in shock. We do have our Star Wars moment where Father Paul said that he's gone. So I kind of chuckled at that.

Sarah's trying to find a scientific explanation for the blood disorder, which she believes she has found. And then also the letters that Riley left for his parents and brother explaining what happened. Which I thought was interesting because Henry Thomas, the father of Riley, takes it to father for it, right?

Yes. He's read these letters other than the one that was labeled to Monsignor, right? He said, I didn't open this because this was his and I didn't feel right unless you told me to. But he goes to him and even though he's read what he's read, you can tell he doesn't believe.

necessarily he's like what do i do what what do i believe it's almost like he's going to him and saying you know my son said all this but i really don't know what what should i do father like i don't know like i don't know do i believe it yeah but with riley was there No one ever believed him because he was always doing something. This is true.

something dramatic that they think like oh he's crying wolf or maybe it's a cry for help or maybe it's just attention it was odd it was just odd i was like you would think the father would have went to him you know the dad and been like i just think like Erin, though, her part still, you know, her game back to land, going to Sarah and just sitting there and telling her every single thing that happened and that she saw. And then she's like.

Well, I guess I am crazy because I just heard it for myself, like what I just said. But if it wasn't because what she saw prior about the blood... And then she, like, tested the waters again with not only her blood, but also her mom's blood and everything. She's like, well... yes everyone has it boom we found out everybody's been getting the power juice like dude that whole community guys is doomed like they have the burning blood they all have the thing in them

Well, again, Mildred walks in and she's even younger. Even Aaron looking at her like, what? Yeah, like, what the fuck? So this episode gave us the thing moment. You know, John Carpenter's the thing where you do the little, the copper in the blood. I loved it good nod way to go Mike Flanagan and here's the thing like you said Pearl

And they reveal that everybody has something going on in their blood. So we know now because of mass, because Father Pruitt's been given this blood, he's been doing a little bit of trickery. He's been given them.

the certain blood throughout this whole time right that's it they the only way here's the thing the doctor sarah she wants to get to the island or get off the island to have the blood tested right further by other people she knows something's wrong right she knows that sunlight but why is what aaron said watching riley burn up right why is not everybody else burning up and she says that there might just be small traces in people where he had like a full-blown trace right goes

She didn't realize the angel had bit him, right? Yeah. So why are we only having certain moments? So she said, we need to test this. We need to know. But she clearly understood because she's like... Aaron, I believe some of what you're saying because of this blood, but then when the grandma walks in looking younger than her, then you're like, now I know why you believe, because you just saw your grandma become your daughter, basically. Like, yeah, you straight up know something's wrong.

So here's the thing. We know, right, as viewers, clearly he has been giving them the blood from the angel. You know, that blood has been given to them. So they're all infected. They're all infected. Every one of them. Because that whole community, other than, I will say this, other than... The sheriff. Yeah, the sheriff. The sheriff and the guy that shot Lisa had not been to Mass.

And also Riley's brother. And Riley's brother. There's only a handful, three or four or five people that we know of that have not took that mask. They would be the only ones that would be non-existent to this. thing going on right yeah everybody else is infected but then comes the horror horrific ending where like you see bev gathering cups

And what's next to the cups is poison. So she already herself trying to create a massive murder because she wants this to go in a different direction. Which we already had a... what episode was like two or three where she originally Aaron had come in to get the Windex. Yeah. And you know, Bev had that, that poison in her hand.

And she's like, yeah, because we have a rat problem. You know, I was going to sprinkle a little bit right now. We know why she had all that poison. Yeah. This has been the Jim Jones scenario of Kool-Aid. Like she's getting ready. She already has the miracle proof that people are coming back. Yep.

It's like, oh, my God. Oh, we're being revealed all this. The whole thing is very Jonestown. Oh, it's 100% Jonestown, bro. There's something else, too, that I think that we kind of glossed over. Not that we... meant to but um the effect everything that this has on the town is um is very interesting because you know you think of Riley's dad mom and Riley's dad does have problems with his back and issues and then

suddenly we see them dancing we have a very sweet moment with them dancing and enjoying enjoying themselves like they haven't in a long time and so of course they're all going to start going to church of course they're starting to believe and they've seen miracles they've seen

So many different things happen and Bev's just feeding into it like crazy. And, you know, I believe, I can't remember if she says this or not, but she's going to let God sort it out. You know, they're, they're, they're, they're going to all be. By the end of the episode, we're going to find out who's going to live and who's going to die. Yeah. And it's all in the power of Beverly. We have given Beverly the all power to reveal who...

Who's going to drink? And I was like, dude, we've given her this power. Like, oh, Beverly. And that's where we know she is the character of the mist. Like, she is straight up that zealot. And because you believe that she quotes scripture so well, like she knows her scripture and she's giving it to you. And when she gives it, it's like, well, that does sound right.

And we've seen miracles where people have died and resurrected on this. We've seen Lisa go from paraplegic to running and walking. And we believe all this stuff. And Father Pruitt with his well-spoken sermons.

We believe everything going on. How would you not be like, okay, she tells me to drink this stuff. I'm going to go ahead and drink it because... you know everything else has happened so she's got to be right huh it's suspicious that now everything at the church happens at night though don't you think yeah oh yeah question that yeah because that's the they changed mass yeah we forgot to mention that they had to change mass from daytime to nighttime because father Pruitt now

you know, burns in daylight, right? Because of him feeding on the one guy. So... you know now they had to change mass so mass has to take place at nighttime and we got that moment where the nighttime mass is going on we also got the moment of sarah is that six episode right because it wasn't seven when sarah said this is not my

It was at the end of that episode when she said, this is not, that's not him. That's not my father. That's not. Not my priest. You're not going back. And she's telling Dr. Sarah, her daughter, you're not going back to this. church this is not that was the last episode yeah yeah that's yeah you're not going back to this church because this is not my church anymore so we got a little bit of reveal there but now we're we're to the climax we're at book seven we're at revelation anybody knows

Episode 7: Revelation Breakdown

anything about the bible we know about revelation it's all about um It's all about, I don't want to call it death, but it's all about, you know, the revenge, not the reveal, the reveals and the resurrections and the different things. It's all about war and stuff, right? So revelations here, Pearl. Without further ado, episode seven, and let's break this in because a lot takes place here. A lot definitely takes place. Well, first of all, death, pain, mourning shall be no more.

Priest gets shot in the head and panic erupts. This happens after though, once Bev already has given everyone a nice cup of non-power juice. Oh, we call it non-power juice? It is non-power juice. It is rat juice. And everyone decides, well, not everyone. Some are still skeptical. Some are panicking.

The ones that did are forcing the other ones to do. And yeah, everyone starts dropping like flies. Everyone's laying there dead. And even the priest, like you could see that he hasn't fully... resurrected healthy yet but he is very much aware that he's looking around like shaking his head as best as possible because now that everyone's waking up guess what Bev wants to do she wants to open the doors and just let them

roam free free will she says but it's not time for free will it's like they don't know nothing they're just gonna go do they're hungry and they're hungry and in the meantime too i mean Sarah, Erin, Mildred, they all know what's going on. So they're also same time plotting along with the sheriff guy. Like, you know, we got to get them. We got we got to stop this, you know.

Are they fully aware of the angel creature yet? Not yet. They will be. But now that everyone's roaming around free with their new eyes and new ways, here comes Bev. She has a theory. Because like Noah's art, everyone who will follow us will be saved. Those who don't will perish. Well, let's beat them to the punch. You know, we'll all go on our boats of art, you know, when it's time. But let's burn the village first.

Let's burn every single place except for the church. Because that's left for us. That will be our art. And we will all meet there. Well, bright ideas from... I guess the power juice they had that they're all burning everything leaving nothing behind until the moment comes where Aaron the sheriff and all them they're all in separate The boats are being burned. The kids are being told to go run to the canoe so they can escape while all this is happening.

You know, the sheriff gets shot and his kids right there near him seeing this happen. He's like, well, you know, Bev and them are telling him you're a coward. course you would do this while it's empty he goes empty he thought is it empty and of course here comes out erin you know she had put a lot of gasoline of course in there coming out with the trail has a lighter in her hand and then all of a sudden swoop

Guess what gets her? Dude. Angel. He came out of nowhere, dude. It was like, that's a jump scare unknown. That was like, bam. And you did get her and started. beating on her and everyone's just looking like yeah and then like here she is screaming

I mean, this angel, man, he knows how to stay on top. Seriously, he's like... When he's feeding, he becomes... fixated right yeah he just doesn't care what's going on nothing like he would be the worst dracula because like you could straight up walk up and do whatever you want to him like he nothing bothers him he is focused on that blood

Yep. So anybody, and we know that because I'm sure you'll go ahead and talk about it. Yeah. But, like, he's so focused. You could do anything. You could slap him in the ass or whatever you want to do. You know, it's a pat. There was a part prior to that.

where before Lisa and Riley's brother were leaving, they did put gasoline in this one home that happened to have... the dad in there and he was being fed on and throwing gasoline on the angel he was not moving until the thing blew up and the fire you know what i gotta bring this up real quick and i'll let you finish

Because they did burn him in that house, right? And he took off screaming. He took off screaming, but it didn't... It didn't affect him. Because when he hits Aaron, he doesn't look like he's got any burns or anything.

That's interesting, because you would think... Because he probably went that quick, like, after probably the body was burning first before him, so he probably blew it off. I just thought about that. Like, why wasn't he burned? But while he's feeding on Aaron, you know, she... has a knife on her and she's cutting a whole bunch of parts on his wings you know trying to like make sure he can't fly very well or something i mean that's her last bit that she can do and in the same time too

Bev and all the whole entire town, they're like, well, what do we do? There's nowhere to go. There's nowhere nothing. She saw the boats. And he's like, no, the boats are gone. And they got blown up, you know. Because bitch Beverly done burned the whole town down.

screwed and it's funny because now everyone is looking around and those who are have bad intent you know they're running scares those who kind of have that redeemed part in them you know they're standing there you're overlooking what they did they're even asking for forgiveness from one another they all start in a singing

Some go to the beach, like the sheriff and his son, and of course even Bev. They don't know what to do, so they're just standing there. The sheriff and his son are praying before the sun comes up. Bev's going cray-cray, and she finally decides to think about, oh, let me dig in the sand, make a hole, you know, of course.

kind of getting too late but she should have thought that sooner but you know i mean everyone's singing and that part was a powerful too because you got everyone singing together and the moment that song comes up silence Like, just silence. No screaming, no nothing. Just silence. Instantly, it went from... And it's just... still but before before that part too like before the sun came up you do see the angel flying away not very great

He could still fly, but at a slow speed. But he did have 30 miles to get to anywhere he had to go before sunrise. Do we think he made, I asked you this, and I'll ask you, unknown. Do you think the angel made it to where he needed to be? I kind of think he did, honestly, because something that lives that long will always find a way to find himself to hide somewhere, even if he didn't make it to this actual home.

that's 30 miles away. I mean, if he wanted to live, he would find a way. What do you think? I don't know. Yeah. And then he's got time to heal. And then maybe somebody, you know, years from now, we'll open up another. you know, wherever he's hiding and it'll all start all over again. More cats. Yeah. I'll film. Go ahead.

Midnight Mass Final Discussion

All I was going to say, and I'll let you talk. All I was going to say was the thing that I really focused on on this episode, and we'll break this down because there's a shit ton going on. But the Beverly character who has been the most zealulate. uh religious person in this community like she has been by the letter of the law we see at the final moments of her life she's the one that doesn't want to die she's the one that's screaming and crying and panicking

while the rest of the community is sitting there singing their way into oblivion. She's the one that's like, oh! And I felt that so rewarding that you are the one that's supposed to be the most religious. You should be praising that you're going to blah, blah. And here you are.

you know just screaming and crying and panicking and and all these things you know your faith is gone now i thought it was rewarding yeah that's you know you read my mind because that's that's exactly what i was going to say is that Here's the person who can quote any scripture from the Bible. Here's the person who really believes in God and faith. And yet she never applies it. She never applies it. She has the book smarts, but not the straight smarts. Exactly.

and the ending and i love that this episode's called revelation because at the ending You know, in the book of Revelation, God tells everyone, you know, you can run, but you can't hide. And here she is trying to dig a hole to hide in. It ain't gonna work. Nope. I feel like that fire and brimstone that's all about the book of Revelation, that fire and brimstone, I felt like she was like...

Okay, if I dig this hole, I'm going to be fine. No, you would have drowned and then come up. You got to come up eventually. You would have died. You're not going to survive. Is it wrong? Because I was watching that part and I kept the song. You know me in songs. The song from Dope popped in my head where it's like, Die, motherfucker, die, motherfucker. Die, motherfucker, die. I kept hearing that. I'm like, I was satisfied seeing her die. It was because you hate her. She is so legit. Just the...

Like I said, she's one of the most villainous villains of anything in modern history, man. I'm like, dude, she is such a villain in this thing. Have we seen anything else? What's that now? Have we seen that actress in anything else? Yes, she was in Oculus. Oh, okay, okay, okay. No, no, I'm sorry, not Oculus, I'm sorry. She was in Hush. She was the neighbor. Kate's character. She was in Hush. I'm sorry, I said Oculus. Another Flanagan regular. She is.

yeah she's one of his his uh in the pocket type uh so in episode seven like pearl mentioned we have the fire we got you know basically and and oh man i'm gonna be very uh i want to be very how do i put this i want to be very uh mindful and very uh cautious with this but when that island is burning i could all i could think of was hawaii a few years ago when it was on fire

yes because that's a devastation realism that we that we see happening out there well in the series it's happening you're like wow but we saw that exact thing in hawaii and it looked so much like that island that's where the horror comes in because it's like the ones who've been through it the ones who see it and how that happened it does it was eerie it was eerie it was very eerie and very

dark and sad because all i could keep thinking of was hawaii and what those people dealt with and and man we're watching this city burn or this island burn and uh so we go back and we see all the moments we air oh my goodness man that was so oh my gosh devastating to see her bit and you're like oh

Everybody's going to die now. As soon as I saw her bit, I'm like, nobody's surviving. Everybody's going to die in this series. This is going to end tragically, but we do get two people survive, right? And then Lisa thought, I don't feel my legs. Yeah, she's like, okay, I guess the miracles are done. Now she's paraplegic again, but you're a live lady, so be thankful for that. They're like the Adam and Eve. They survive. There you go. Life has given a second chance. Boom, you've got it.

the townspeople panicking i thought was was great when we got those touching moments pearl you mentioned where the uh one guy walks up to the boy the altar boy and says you know you know are you okay you forgive me and that kind of deal and the boy's like gives him that moment where he's like i think i just

I think I killed my mother. And he's like, I've done bad things, too. Tonight, I've done bad things. You see the remorse in everybody, even though these... people have turned basically creature-like uh we see them still have humanity in them and they're like okay we're gonna go out singing hymns uh we're gonna die religious and we're gonna you know

we'll take our punishment so to speak and and it was so powerful man this is such a great ending to a series uh it ended the way it had to end everybody basically had to die and that's the only way to make this thing right very satisfying you know i you know i i lose myself in shows sometimes and you know you've got you got a show like lost and you hope for the best and you hope it's going to end in an interesting way but these these

seven eight nine episode series you get a beginning middle and end and it's always satisfying i haven't i have to really go back i have not watched the other mike flanagan shows on netflix um so i have to go back and watch those i know everybody that I've talked to says this is the best one. Um, but, uh, I've heard that, uh, what's the next one called midnight? It's midnight as well. Midnight club, midnight club. I heard that was kind of fun. Huh? I've not seen it.

I've actually not seen it. I love Hush. I love, love Gerald's Game. That's a, uh, which is a movie, I guess you would call it movie series, but I love Gerald's Game, which is a Stephen King adaption. well yeah anytime she's tied to a bed i'm all for that and we got to talk about that and we'll do this we got not about her being tied to a bed but we got to talk about some of the easter eggs and how that

Flanagan's Easter Eggs and Universe

Mike Flanagan has admitted to tying everything together, so to speak. Having a universe of all his stuff kind of... Stephen King-esque. You know, you take The Stand. Well, look at how he's doing Carrie that's going to be on Prime very soon. And then next year, The Exorcist. Yeah, you take stuff like the Dark Tower series, if you know anything about the Dark Tower.

series if you don't I'll reveal there are characters throughout the whole book series where you'll see Christine pop up or you're gonna see the stand in it you're gonna see all these different Stephen King moments Salem's Lot All these things tie into the book series. Much like Mike Flanagan, in Gerald's game, there's a book on top of a headboard where the girls tie it down, and it is none other than Midnight Mass.

Yep. In Hush, things that I didn't realize until now. In Hush, she is a writer and she had wrote a book about... Midnight Mass with characters Riley and Aaron in it. What? All this stuff is tying in now. Mike Flanagan, you're such a smart little character, you booger. You sneaky little bastard. You and I love you. I love Mike Flanagan. He's making us drink the juice. He's gave us the power juice. He's making us all young again. I need extra power juice. Oh, we both need power juice.

too oh my god i love love love love love this and the song they were singing it in is near my god to thee and it's so powerful and then it just is as pearl said it is haunting it's like You've got such a beautiful hymn going on. And you're like, oh, and also. complete silence and it goes off with silence like it's like holy crap dude mike flanagan chef kiss to the sky you have made a complete masterpiece of a tv series that we will never see well we

I say we never will. We will see because Mike Flanagan will damn make sure. that this thing gets released on a physical copy, I bet. I'd love a director's commentary. I'd love all that information. Hush was in obscurity, Netflix obscurity, until Mike Flanagan said, oh, hell no.

And he let that shit, and he fought, and he got it, and now we got Hush out on 4K or Blu-ray or whatever. We've got it because Mike Flanagan said, no, no, no. This is going physical, buddy. And I really believe that he'll eventually get it. Midnight Mass release physically. Let's hope for it because I want to own this physically. I don't want this in streaming's obscurity, man. I want a physical copy of this.

with how personal it is to him, I would think that he would fight for that. I think he will. I definitely think he will. So let's wrap this part of it up. And we'll still talk about some other things that you can bring up, whatever you got to bring up on it. But let's wrap up with the fact.

Midnight Mass Ratings and Wrap-Up

of what we overall, I think we both are gushing on it. If we had to rate the series on a one to 10 basis, Pearl, where would you rate Black, I keep saying Black Mass, Midnight Mass. I would give it an 8.5. 8.5. Unknown, where would you come on a... I'd give it a solid 9. Ooh, I'm giving it a solid 9.5, my friends. This is one of my favorite series right now, dude. I'm telling you. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I will rewatch this again. It has very rewatchability.

feels on it like I could definitely rewatch this again and it makes me want to go watch Hush and makes me want to go watch Gerald's Game again because I want to see these little Easter eggs I want to see him in there. I don't recall. I remember her writing the book in Hush.

I remember her on the laptop, but I never paid attention to it because I was just like, whatever, it's a movie, right? Now that we know that there's a tie into Midnight Mass in this, of course I'm going to look at it. Holy crap, dude, you smart little bird. So what else you got on Midnight Mass or on Mike Flanagan himself? I don't know. Well, I'm looking forward to the fact that he supposedly is tied up to do a DC movie.

Clayface, I have heard that he's possibly going to be a part of that. I don't know if it's for sure. But that would be very interesting to see him take a Batman villain and make a horror movie out of it. Interesting. I'm really hoping he does that. I don't know if it's going to happen or not.

I do just want to talk about a couple things on an interview I listened to him. There was a really good interview on a podcast. I don't have the name of it right now. And I'm not going to promote another podcast on your show. He mentioned something very fascinating to me. With Absentia, if anybody hasn't seen that movie, there's basically like a... What do you want to call it? Like a cave that she has to go through? What would you call that in absentia? She has to pass through this tunnel.

So he said that when he was a kid, he used to like Fraggle Rock. And there's an episode in Fraggle Rock where there's a tunnel that they're never supposed to go in because no Fraggle has ever come back from it. And it wasn't until after he made absentia that he realized that he had basically just made a horror version of a Fraggle Rock episode.

I found that absolutely fascinating. But I find that he just gets deeper and deeper into mythology with the more he does. So I look forward to seeing more with... You know, obviously not these characters unless we do see that the angel shows up. Maybe the angel shows up in something else completely different. That would be interesting. That would be interesting. Maybe he'll be Pazuzu. Maybe he'll be in there with Clayface and he'll bite him or something.

The real Batman. But yeah, no, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I really appreciate the fact that you guys thought of me for this. What a great show. It just makes me want to watch more of his stuff and really look forward to what he's going to do next. Agree. And I think it's duly noted that we know... Or we feel that what we've seen in this was very vampiric, right? Yeah, yeah. But here's the thing, too. And I didn't mean to interrupt. No, go ahead. I love the idea when somebody just...

blankly says, oh, you can't come up with another idea for a monster movie or a vampire movie or a zombie movie. And yet here we are, a completely new spin on a vampire movie. That's right. It's never mentioned in this series in any spot the word vampire. Never. So even with the point of the blood poisoning and the burning.

never will you hear the word vampiric. And he mentions in the interview, we might've watched the same one. He mentioned that that was very, that was very on purpose. He did not want it mentioned in there because it becomes a little wink, wink, nod, nod, he said.

It becomes a little hokey when you put the word vampire in it. And he did not want that in this. And the people did not want this as far as the actors. So you will not hear the word vampire, even though that's pretty much what we're getting in this. kind of vampiric. Netflix would have probably categorized it as that then. Exactly. Pretty smart of him not to do that. 100%. So, Pearl, what did you think overall of Mike Flanagan, the series, everything? What do you think? I'm just...

Interested in wanting more. I'm looking forward to everything else he's going to bring up. And I do recommend for those who have not watched it to wash it and get you some power juice. Get you some power juice. I've mentioned Robert Eggers is my. favorite director, modern era director within the last several years. He is my new favorite director. Mike Flanagan is right there, folks. He's top.

I'm going to say top 10, 100%, maybe even hitting in the top five for me in the last 10, 15 years. Mike Flanagan's right there. And if you go visit. the Myers house in Pasadena California my friends I have been revealed by Justin Bean that he actually works in his office Mike Flanagan's office is in the Myers house in actual Judith's room Oh!

He works there. And then here comes everyone knocking on the door. But don't do that. They're not going to let you do that, okay? But they have, Justin has mentioned how sometimes Mike Flanagan will play with people that are there. Sometimes if he's there, he might try to come out there and look out the window. something at you like he's he's a fan he's a fan guys but mike flanagan works at the freaking myers house in pasadena how fucking cool is that awesome real quick yeah yeah he uh

He mentioned also, I heard him talk about how his son has a lot of influence on him and his son's 12 now, or he might be a little bit older. I don't know how old this interview was, but he is eyeing the possibility of maybe writing. video game in the style of The Last of Us. So I would find that fascinating if he got involved in something like that. He has been meeting with some game developers. So that could be interesting. I would love to see some kind of...

cross-horror with somebody who really knows what they're doing. And he's so whole hog on everything. You see these shows come out. And you see, you know, brought to you by the director of so-and-so. And they direct maybe the first episode and the last episode. But Flanagan directed this whole fucking thing. He directed all seven episodes, you know. And so he really puts himself into his projects.

Agree. And you mentioned Last of Us. We didn't mention this, but the sheriff, Raul Kowali, him and Mike Flanagan were such fans of The Last of Us that they patterned. the sheriff's dress his his look after joel from the last of us i didn't even know you're right oh my god you're right so the blue jeans the flannel shirt all that straight up Joel from the last of us. So there was a good nod because they were big fans and, and, uh, the sheriff.

He was like, man, let's do this. Let's do this. I want to look like Joel. I want to look like freaking The Last of Us. We love his show. There it goes. Wow. So this has been fun. This has been a blast. I absolutely love them. If you have not seen this series, you have just been spoiled all to hell. And you're looking at us like, damn, I only had to watch it because y'all talked about it. Well, that's okay because we warned you. We warned you at the beginning. We did. gave you warnings.

and told you you should watch it first, but if you haven't and you still want to watch it, definitely go watch it, man. I'm telling you. Even if you haven't seen it and you're like, you spoiled the shit out of it, still watch it because you'll still love it. Yeah, it's not like you know what parts where and why. That's right. That's right. You've got to watch it for Beverly anyways. You want to just smack her. You just want to see the demise of Beverly. And then you want to laugh when she dies.

I swear, if I go to any comic convention and I see somebody cosplaying Beverly, I'm running away. I'm not going to talk to them. Well, that is the episode, listeners. This has been a blast. So, man, we appreciate you tuning in to Mortis Vision with the Mortises and the Unknown Collar tonight. I got to give it to you, Unknown Collar. What do you got for final thoughts, your plugs, anything, your stalkings that you're doing lately, whatever.

you got going on, brother? This is your time. Well, I know you guys are recording tomorrow for the next episode of Land of the Creeps. I sure hope Bill and Dave show up. I don't know. They may not be available. But looking forward to that. And I mentioned to Pearl that I have a really good Vincent Price gem that I can't wait to talk about. So looking forward to calling in on that show.

Nice. Can't wait. I love you so much. And thank you so much for letting me be a part of this. Oh, we love you too, man. And we loved having you on for what you got in closing thoughts. nothing power juice no I don't need power juice what I need is a root beer float

I know. That's what I've been thinking about all day. We got a gift card to Red Robin. We might go get us a root beer float in that Friday. Oh, they got some good shakes and floats there, man. Yeah, man. Maybe Friday we'll go watch that movie. What's that new one?

Not talk to me, but... Bring her back. Bring her back or bring me back or whatever. Or the new ballerina. Or ballerina. One of the two. Maybe we'll go eat Red Robin and then go check a movie out Friday. Oh, you know what I just watched? I just finally watched Nobody. What a great movie, man. I forgot which one that was. What's that? I forgot which one that one was. That's Bob Odenkirk where he basically takes on the Russian mob. Oh.

Yeah, it's like John Wick for 50-year-olds. It's great. Of course, Keanu Reeves is past 50, so I shouldn't say that. But yeah, what a great movie. Let me know how those movies are. a good string of horror movies at the theater lately. Agreed. Yep. Final Destination and all that. Yep. It's going to be a tough year for movies of the year. Oh, yeah.

Well, Maya, in closing, this was fun. Thank you, Unknown, for coming on and giving your best as you've done before. Anytime. Everyone knows where to find me.
