of the crease whore podcast i'm your host greg i'm mortis calling in from north kaki lackey that's north carolina to all you northerners and you're listening to episode 421 of lotc baby And, man, are we excited. This is all about going back to school. And you say going back to school, as Dave mentioned on the last episode. Sounds a little weird going back to school in April or March, going on April. But that's all right because I play behind the black ball. It's okay. It's okay
It's okay. So we're going to be excited. We're going to be talking some school horror. We've got some calls coming in from you, the listeners, which were awesome. I cannot wait to listen. So this is it, man. If you're new to the show, welcome. I want to thank Andy Usry for the music that you just heard at the beginning of the show.
It's a really kick-ass theme intro that I love so freaking much. And then at the end of the episode, you'll hear the outro music, which is done by Greg Whitaker. So I want to give him a shout-out. And if you're new to the show, go back and listen to the 420...
previous episodes it might take you a minute but i highly recommend it and you'll probably find a bunch of movies that we've talked about in the past but without further ado let's go ahead and welcome in the crew tonight let's go outside of philadelphia pa welcome in
from none other than DVD Infatuation podcast and his blog spot. If you haven't went to his blog site, you should totally do that and check out his movie challenge that he's been doing since the beginning of time, and he's done several movies. You would definitely enjoy that. But he is the Encyclopedia of Knowledge himself, Dr. Shock, Dave Becker. What's up, Dave? Hey, Greg. Thank you so much for that great introduction.
Yeah, this this is an interesting topic. You know, you're saying back to school as we're now getting into late March, you know, early April. Right. Yeah, when most kids are thinking, hey, we're almost out, we're looking for a way back in. Not just students, Dave. Yeah, well, that's true. Yeah. Very, very true. But I got to tell you. The last time I was in school would have been probably fall of 1992 in college. Oh, wow. I still, to this day, have the dream. And this is, what, 33 years later.
You might have had it a couple weeks ago. Where I am going to take a final exam and realize I have not gone to any of the classes. I don't even know where the room is. I don't know what the exam is going to be on. Oh, I still have that dream. And it's not. quite a nightmare, but it's not a pleasant dream either. Now, I know it has nothing to do with school. I'm sure anybody out there who's an expert in dreams can explain what that dream is about. But to this day...
I dream that I'm a student. Sometimes it's high school. Sometimes it's college. I'm on my way to take a final exam and said, oh, my God, I haven't been to this class all semester. I've done none of the homework. I don't even quite know. what this class is about. I have that dream once every few weeks. I think it's because you got some... Analyze dreams. Please let me know what that is. But Dave, are you clothed? Yes. Oh yeah.
I'm definitely clothed. I don't even want to dream about me without clothes. It is because you have unfinished business, Dave. There's unfinished business in your life that something in your childhood or something in your past that you have not buttoned up. have not sewed up you have not finished and it's pressuring you to the point that you've got to get it done i don't know that's just off the top of my head sounds right that's pretty that's pretty good greg i like that a lot was that goop
Google a chat GPT. That was chat G-A-M, Greg Amortis. But I will say this now. If somebody tells me that's what it is, I'm going to be like, see, I told you. really good i you know what that could very well be it i probably have about
a dozen things I've not finished. You know what it is? Greg, can I go in your living room and just lay there and tell you things and you tell me what they mean? Sure. You can lay down on my couch and I'll tell you. This is the Jay of the Dead's original too, by the way. You know how Jay of the Dead does his...
original that was my my greg and mortis originals there so i liked it so maybe it's it's a a old nun from your catholic school day that you were supposed to go back and whoop her ass and uh you didn't do it so maybe you got to go back and take a ruler to to a Well, from the nuns from my grade school, the most I could do now is piss on their grave. We don't want to do that. It's a good half day.
You know, I certainly don't want to pay a fine for public urination because of a nun. None, none, none of that is going to happen. So good to have Dave on. So let's go. We've already heard from Canada. Let's go ahead and go into the butchery room itself. Welcome. back from sports hell. It's Bill the Butcher Van Vagel. What's up, buddy?
I can't wait to do Back to School. Are we going to talk about Rodney Dangerfield and Sam Kenson? Wouldn't that be great? I love that movie. I remember seeing that in the theater when that came out, me and my friends. Since that day, I've been practicing. Practicing my triple Lindy. Matter of fact, that was the same year. It wasn't the same time, but I'm pretty sure that was the same year as Ferris Bueller's Day Off. There's another high school movie. Exactly.
And one that was mentioned by Amy Lee in her call, and we'll get to that later. And I didn't know whether to sing Sam Cooke's What a Wonderful World, Don't Know Much About History, or Steely Dan's My Old School. I had a roommate in college that loved Steely Dan. I was like, oh, it's like... fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Anyway, you said what a wonderful world. I immediately thought of Louis Armstrong. But you're right. I think that song is called Wonderful World. That Sam Cooke song.
And I hear that, and I'm immediately taken to the cafeteria in Animal House. Any of you youngsters out there, look up Sam Cooke's soul just oozes it. But I have his greatest hits.
CD, and I remember playing that all the time. He was amazing, Sam Crook. But I really look forward to this episode because this can go in so many directions. You can go anything from... you know boarding school to elementary school to high school to college to vocational school and there's words that have been said in all of those mine was uh it was interesting so i look forward to this and everybody listening
Pay attention to the end because I have a very important announcement. And with that, back to you, Greg. All right. And let's go ahead and welcome in the twisted tempest herself, the love of my life. Pearl, what's up, love? Hey, everybody. Hi. Well, if anyone can talk about Back to School and Ronnie Dangerfield, you know what? John Travolta, I can talk about Grease. So take that. Oh, yeah. Sure, why not? There you go. I thought you were going to say, welcome back, Cotter.
That too. That too, and he's still in there too. John Travolta was also in a very memorable horror film associated with school. Yep. Billy Nolan. And I don't know if he was in school when he was in the devil's reign, but he was pretty young.
Yeah, he was kind of there. Didn't say a word, but yeah. And you know what about your dream, Dave? It's you finding... your own path and and like you're the compass you're lost in your dream but in your present you're finding a way out of your situations and anxiety and you're not lost but It's the anxiety of not knowing what you're going to do next.
So that's what it represents. You know what that means, Dave? You're leaving the seafood world. That's what you got to do. You got to leave the seafood world. You're not cutting. Yeah, because in those pictures, I was like, ew. I was like. God, everything's empty in there. I was like, God, it's sliced up like sliced from hell. There's nothing quite like getting the esophagus of a fish on your sleeve as you're placing it into a case.
I'm like, yeah, I want one Mahi, not Mahi Mahi, but one Mahi. Yeah. But I'm excited. I'm ready to go back to school. I got my backpack. I got no books. But I'm ready to roam the halls. No running in the hallway. Yeah, or smoking in the boys' room. Super excited. And a little side note that y'all don't know anything about, but we'll go ahead and say it right now. Joel just texted me, Dave. is from Tyson. I saw that. He just texted me as well. He said he meant to tell us.
But Tyson made a special candle inspired by Jay of the Dead's new horror movies. What we're talking about is, Greg, you just made a post on Facebook that you got a candle in the mail. And I got a candle in the mail as well. And it's the baboon one. Yes. Right? Yes. Yes. And then Tyson had it made.
from this company in in miami florida i think it was and he said it out to all of the horror avengers yep and it smells so good too by the way yeah oh yes it's it's really cool But the thing was, it sort of disturbed me was it came with a toe tag from a coroner. this is true and and the label says it's berserk baboon and it's 100 high quality hand uh hand poured uh soy wax and it says at the bottom apple wax yes yes apples
God, I can't even read because I got lights out. I think I got a different one. I did not get apples and maple. I have a different one. There are various scents that go along with the raging baboon. I got apples, maple, bourbon, and pissed off primate. That is what's in mind. Oh, I got pissed off primate. I didn't get the apples and bourbon. No, I got the pissed off primate. I got to look at what my ingredients were. That was very nice. And pissed off primate smells very sweet. So there you go.
self-primate does not sound very like it makes you think like if you light that candle are all these baboons gonna come running to the apartment like in the omen i hope so let's bring them on bring up them in wild baboons but we're excited man this is the show right here we're getting ready to jump
into our horror episode. So we're going to be talking school horror. We're each going to do a movie review that we chose. We didn't have to watch each other's movies. If we did, that's fine. If we didn't, that's fine. But we'll each do our review. And in between each review, I'm going to throw some voicemail.
in from you to listeners and that's how we're going to roll tonight and then we'll probably do some honorable mentions at the end uh us the crew uh so that's where we're at but we got to do our shots so without further ado in my california shot glass oh yeah i got the california shot glass which is so cool got all kinds of i don't know postcards or whatever you want to call it i do have my jim beeman honey in white label ready and dr shock what you drinking tonight
I actually have a new one and it's a very special one because it was sent to me by a listener of our show and a frequent caller of the show. It is a cafe away medium roast. And it is the Taste of San Antonio. And it was sent to me as a gift by the Gruesome Twosome. Oh, nice. Greg P. and Amy Lee. And it is apparently, Greg let me know that this is Amy's favorite coffee. They sent me 54 K cups of it. And I'm going to be trying it for the first time tonight.
as we record I just I just brewed it well maybe about an hour ago to let it cool down a little I don't want to you know burn off my taste buds like I do every week but I'm looking forward to trying it. And I thank you very much, Greg and Amy, for this. It was a wonderful gift and I definitely appreciate it. Thank you. I love it. So that's what we've got tonight. Let's go to Bill. What are you drinking tonight?
I got water with orange squirty juice mixed with Celsius. God, I don't know, some kind of tropical flavor. So let's down her. All right, cool. Pearl, what you drinking on the night? Walmart water. Walmart water. All right. We got the greater value water. We're going to say no flavor to it. No, I'm trying to get over the. Little giving bug that I was given this past day. It's the gift that keeps on giving, I guess.
Walking it down the water. We had a virus go through the house for sure, and I don't know what it was, but it wasn't pleasant. There's only two of you, so you know where it came from. I'm the one that goes out and has to work, and it's because... It's not good because I bring home every German with Pearl's immune system at zero.
Yeah, it's not good. I try to be fair. I go, maybe it was the mailman because, you know. Hey, wait a minute. Not like that. That did come out well. I think I'm going to put a ring doorbell. Could have been the repairman or the pizza delivery guy. What?
Well, our mailman is nice. He does bring the mail to the door. I'm sure he is. I bet he does bring it to the door. Damn. Oh, she likes his package. Yeah, I bet he does. Hey, you know what, Greg? Next time she asks you to tip him $500, you're going to have to think twice about that.
I'm going to have to have a talk with this male man. I want his name, Pearl. Give me his name. I'm kidding. No, I got what she's talking about. It's not like that. He is a good guy. What's that song, Mr. Poe? Hey, mistress. Return to Cinder. I'm returning to Cinder, damn it. Aw, Elvis. I know, right? But this is what we're going to do tonight, so let's go ahead and get these shots out of the way. And everybody, now that you quit laughing so hard, let's chug.
Laughing at my calamity here. Count it out. Three, two, one, Chuck. That was good. That was smooth. Smooth as the milkman coming in the back door. We got it. You know what? Really? Smooth as the milkman coming in the back door. Wow. I really like the coffee, by the way. The coffee was very good. It has a very good flavor. Thank you very much, Greg and Amy again for that.
And let's just take the spotlight off the milkman coming through the back door. Yeah, that's right. Or going through the back door. That's right. Robert Plant would be proud. Yeah, exactly. And for all you wondering, Pearl and I are doing perfectly fine. this is
If y'all knew us, this is how we pick on each other daily. It's how you roll. It's how we roll, baby. It's how we roll. So I think without further ado, what we're going to do is we're going to talk about school horror. Now, the criteria for this episode was... that we wanted movies with Skull in the movie. So it didn't have to necessarily be the focal point.
It didn't necessarily have to involve children staying in the classroom. We just wanted a movie that had school in it somewhere. So it could only been a flash in the pan. It could have been like the full movie, whatever, right? So that was criteria. Just going back to school. Pearl's giving me the look. What happened? So that was not the criteria. Yeah.
Okay, cool. I'll go with it. I sure as hell hope it was. That's what we chose. That's what we're rolling with. We're having fun tonight. So we each chose a movie on our own. Like I said, we didn't have to watch each other's movies. This is just kind of a, you know, pick a movie and let's go with it. And I did watch everybody's movie. Pearl watched everybody's movie. And we did just for my purpose. As did I.
And Bill's done with his baseball crap, so now he's ready. He's ready for this. Yeah, and I think I drafted a pretty good team. Anybody who wants to know, just let me know. Yeah. You better have all Dodgers on there or you're going to lose. Oh, okay, moving on. Oh, yeah. All right, so what we're going to do, we're going to start, and we're going to do this as a –
I guess kind of round robin. So we're going to go with Dave's movie first, then we'll go to Bill, and then we'll go to Pearl, and then myself, and that's how we'll do it. And then, like I said, we're going to throw some voicemails out there for you, the listeners. I'm super excited about this. So let's go ahead and start it out with Dave, Dr. Schott Becker first.
I want to know what movie you chose, why you chose it, and then let's get to the review. All right. Well, just to give you an idea, I'll give you a little bit of a hint of the movie I chose. Take a generous helping of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Mix it with a smattering of the 50s classic Invaders from Mars. And then a dash of John Carpenter's The Thing. You have the basic story that drives my movie, which is Robert Rodriguez's 1998 film The Faculty.
which is uh that when this topic was wrote that's the first movie i thought um but so it's you know it's sort of borrowing from these other films but it's in the telling that this movie distinguishes itself And the great work of its cast and crew that makes it so much fun. It's so damn entertaining, this movie. A quick synopsis. Something strange is happening in the normally peaceful suburb of Harrington, Ohio.
The teachers at the local high school have been acting strange. And two students, the nerder, the nerdy Casey Conner, played by Elijah Wood and head cheerleader Delilah Prophet, Jordana Brewster. both of whom work for the school paper, believe they might have stumbled upon the reason why. Alien parasites have...
taking control of the faculty, the school's faculty. With the help of a select few, including the reclusive Stokely Mitchell, played by Claire Duvall, Delilah's boyfriend and the football team star quarterback Stan Rosato, played by Sean Hattos. bad boy drug dealer Zeke, played by Josh Hartnett, and brand new student Mary Beth Hutchinson, played by Laura Harris, Casey and Delilah set out to rid their school of its otherworldly threat before it sweeps through the entire town.
Now, that's a pretty good, that's a pretty impressive young cast. The standouts for me in this movie were Elijah Wood, Cleo Duvall, and Josh Hartnett. They're the ones I think who really stole this movie. I think all of them were good. I think all of those young performers were good, but they're the ones who sort of stood out for me. As good as the young cast is, though, the actors who play the faculty are what make this movie so damn special. You have Bebe Neuwirth, his school principal, Drake.
And among the teachers reporting on her are football coach Willis, played by Robert Patrick, drama teacher Mrs. Olsen, Piper Laurie. Of course, from another high school movie that I'm sure is going to be brought up several times today by the callers. The initially shy but eventually sexy Famke Jansen as Miss Burke. Salma Hayek shows up in a few scenes as the school nurse. And talk show host Jon Stewart is the science teacher, Mr. Furlong.
And, you know, it's following the faculty that we, the audience, know there's something going on before any of the lead characters, any of the students know there's something going on. It's a great... scene between Principal Drake and the coach that takes place in the school at night. There's a scene where Nurse Harper is attacked in the teacher's lounge.
And Casey and Delilah witnessed this because they were hiding in the closet. They went into the teachers and looking for clues as to why everyone's acting so strange. But it's the effects-heavy sequence in which the leads are attacked. in the science lab, as well as a late scene that pays tribute to a key moment in John Carpenter's The Thing that really blew me away. And again, these all involve the faculty themselves.
Now, in terms of the younger characters in this, it not only gives us this group, it's like an unlikely group of compatriots, you know, because some of them are outcasts, some of them are popular. but they're the ones who know what's going on. But this movie also has a little bit of social commentary to it as well. I mean, much like the pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
anyone who falls under the control of this alien parasite start to tell everyone who's not under control how great the transformation has been how it has stripped away their worries their feet years and made them just like everyone else and you'll love it come over you know go through this you're gonna love it but it's the social outcasts
Like Elijah Woods Casey and Cleo Duvall Stokely, as well as those who are not quite sure how they fit into the world. You know, just before all hell broke loose, Stan, you know, Delilah's boyfriend who was a star. quarterback of the football team quit the football team to focus on his grades. And he's, you know, he's sort of struggling with that. But they're the ones fighting to maintain their individuality. When the chips were down, they're the ones who had the most to game.
from conforming from fitting in yet they decided it was the last thing they wanted to do and i thought that was a really cool sort of uh Something that Kevin Williamson added to this, because this movie, it was directed by Robert Rodriguez, but it was also who did a great job directing it. Most of this, it was shot at night. And he does such a great job, like in the shadows and just keep.
Keeping you on the edge of your seat with the way he was setting up the shots. And Kevin Williamson wrote the screenplay for this. He had set horror ablaze two years earlier with Scream. This movie flows at a breakneck pace. There is one exciting scene to the next and there are enough twists scattered throughout to keep you guessing like who's an alien, who isn't. And then, oh, they were off screen for about 10 seconds. Are they now an alien? Oh, my God, they are.
You know, the movie does that a lot. And you throw that in as long as as well as as well as the great cast. Some impressive special effects that were overseen by Robert Kurtzman, Howard Berger and Greg Nicotero, among others, all through. whom collaborated on From Dusk Till Dawn and Scream, and a kick-ass soundtrack. I love the songs in this. I love how it opens up with the cover version of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall Part II.
And it throws other songs in their other cover versions. And you have a horror sci-fi mashup that cannot miss. And it does not miss. This is an absolute blast from start to finish. I give it a nine out of 10. I'm so glad that I got to rewatch it. That said, I am kicking myself in the ass for not picking another movie. And we'll get into that a little bit more later. I'm not going to bring it up right now. I'm going to see if any of you.
the callers bring it up and i'll point it out if any of the callers bring it up but i was very happy to re-watch the faculty i like this movie more each time i see it and i loved it even more this time than in any of the previous times it just seems to get better
Yeah, this is one that had been a hot minute since I've seen it. I've seen it a few times. And I will agree that I enjoyed it. You can definitely feel Kevin Williamson's... flavor in it for sure man with the cleverness of the kids like he he had that niche of being able because of scream and we've seen it through other his movies like he's able to bring in kids into a situation and just really amplify them and he did that in this one
I thought the cast was really good. The thing that hurts me in this one though is now the visual effects really show. Like, they really show how bad they can be. Maybe it's mine. I don't have it on Blu-ray. I have it on DVD. And they didn't look... Yeah, I mean, it's late 90s. Oh, yeah. So, this is... Like this is this is like post. It's funny because, you know, we go to early 90s with Jurassic Park and they still look fucking exactly when you get later on. And this is, you know.
And let's throw it out there. This was produced by the Weinsteins. This was a touchstone film which fell under the umbrella of the Weinstein brothers. Yeah, Dimension. They had money behind it. I think the effects look good enough for this movie. But I can see where, yeah, okay, are they matching?
You know what? Are they matching what we get in the 2020s? Well, if you're talking about the Marvel movies where they're throwing $250 million at it, no. But if you're talking about another movie where they're throwing $10 million at the CGI... I would put this over that even today.
Sure. I mean, it's a $15 million budget, it said. And it's fun to go back. And I'm not faulting necessarily the movie for the effects. It just really shows, which is similar to when you go back and watch an 80s slide. Clasher that you loved in the 80s and then you go back and watch it now and you're like, woof. It depends if it's practical effects by Tom Savini. I still think they look pretty good.
You watch something like The Prowler. You think people are killed in that film. Right, right. So this one, I thought that was the weakest aspect of it was the visual effects. But... at the same time it is invasion body snatchers on crack and i like the magic dust that kind of cures or helps and the thing is when they take it
They get high. I mean, it proves they're not an alien. You know, what it is, is Josh Hartnett's character has been dealing this thing. And it's like almost straight up caffeine. Didn't he say it was caffeine and cleaning products? Yes. And several cleaning products. So that when you ingest it, you get high, but it dries you out. And these aliens, they have to keep hydrating. They came from a water plant that we discover and they have to keep hydrating. So when they dry out.
out they die and we notice that in a key scene in the movie so to prove you're not an alien you have to ingest this the problem is you're out of commission for a while because you get high yeah And I thought that was so cool. I know. That like, that after they take this test, after witnessing everything they did, that like Elijah Wood is sitting around laughing his ass off.
Because it's the first time in his life he's ever gotten high and he doesn't know how to react to it. Yeah. It's like, what is this movie promoting? Is it promoting drugs? Like, what are we promoting? I was trying to find the recipe. They never put it in. No. They didn't. I don't recommend.
Random mixing cleaning products at home. So you don't want Javex up your nose? Come on, Javepene full of caffeine up your nose and snorted. Caffeine, but you got to know the other ingredients. That's true. There's a reason they didn't. He didn't tell us it was like two parts Drano and one part Windex.
No, but this is a fun watch. This is definitely fun. I like the cast. I mean, this is Josh Harnett coming in that era where we got H2O and different movies with him in it. I think he was so good in this film. He was really good. You know, and Josh Hartnett's one of those actors who I don't think quite gets the credit he deserves. Because I think he gets overlooked sometimes. And I think in this movie, he was...
It's with him and Famke Jansen. And what I like about this is not everybody reacts the same to the alien parasite. You can't say Famke Jansen is like emotionalist. Like when you think of like the original Invasion of the Piesnatch or even the 70s, you know, classic version. Now, everybody sort of becomes emotionless. And that's how you know that they've turned. Bambi Jantz's character is not emotionless when she has a showdown.
You know, the early scenes where she's sort of this this like sort of wallflower character teacher who's very withdrawn and very unsure of herself. And all of a sudden she gets she's. you know, gets this alien parasite and she becomes a sex bot and she goes after him and she insults him 10 times worse than he ever gave her.
with what she comes up with for him. So I liked that everybody reacted a little bit differently. It wasn't quite Invasion of the Body Snatchers in that way where everybody has the same reaction to becoming a pod person. Everybody maintains a little, it's almost like this alien sort of stimulates the personality underneath. of the host. Yeah, but all Robert Patrick wanted was a pencil. I mean, come on. Yeah. Nothing wrong with that.
And both him and Piper Laurie always wanted to do that. Yeah, and I'll pass this around because I know everybody else has seen it too, but the other thing I did want to mention was the fact of Elijah Wood, who we know from Lord of the Rings. He's gone on to do other things. This is pre-Lord of the Rings. He's still sort of the child actor from The Good Son. The Good Son, exactly.
some of those movies that he had done at this time you know it's not too long after that so he's still young enough to be playing this high school student and he does look like the youngest of that group absolutely one million percent so uh pearl what'd you think of this one I got distracted from Famica. I forgot how hot she looks in this movie. Right. Once she becomes sexy, Famica. Yeah.
I liked her as a plain Jane, too. She was cute. I forgot Usher was in this, and he distracts me, too, because all I hear is his music. Who was it? Usher. Oh, okay, Usher. I sure had a role in this. Chris McDonald. Chris McDonald, who played, who was the, what the, it was, oh God, what was it? He was the father.
Yeah. Well, yes, he played, he played Elijah Wood's father and there's a scene with a cop and his parents. That's what reminded me of invaders from Mars from a similar scene from the, from the, and it might've been in, um, and Toby Hooper's update in the 80s, but I'm thinking of the one from the 50s. Yeah, it definitely felt stolen from that 1 million percent for sure. Yeah, I enjoyed this one. I love Robert Patrick in this too because he...
fits these roles really good. Yeah, he does. And this is seven years after Terminator 2. Yep. And the score is fucking awesome. I love the soundtrack in this one. Marco Beltrani.
did the score for this as well but the soundtrack and the score I think were both great the songs that they did covers of and uh yeah it's it's it was and i love how they introduce the character like you see their name appear underneath and you know that this is going to be the team that's going to take like of the kids it like it pops up casey delilah
And you know that these are the ones who are going to get together to sort of fight this. And this could be my favorite Claire Duvall performance. It probably is. Because she was so good in this. Yeah, and I'll pass it over to Bill, but check out the soundtrack. Another Brick in the Wall, part two, played by Class of 99. Never heard of Class of 99, but it's a cool little upbeat punker version. Yes. The kids aren't all right. The Offspring, I love Offspring.
I'm 18, the Alice Cooper song by Creed, which was awesome, Helpless by Degeneration, School's Out, Soul Asylum, big Soul Asylum fan, Medication by Garbage. Haunting Me, Stabbing Westward. Maybe Someday by Flick. You got Resuscitation by Sheryl Crow. It's Over Now, Neve. Changes by Sean Mullins. You got Stay Young by Oasis.
love that band and then you got another brick in the wall part one my class of 99 so that was the soundtrack man i want that fucking soundtrack but bill what you got on this one
I really enjoyed re-watching this. I like you, Greg. It had been a hot minute. It had probably been a year or two, but it's one of those ones that I keep loving to review because unlike... many 90s horrors that you know you watch once and then you might watch once a decade this one to me if you're talking pure teenage target audience films
this might be one of my top three or four post Friday the 13th. I really like it because, you know, it does have, you know, the main characters are, other than the teachers, you know, between the ages of 17 to 20. But it's got meat on the bone. Like, it's well written. it's well thought out there's lots of easter eggs and homages in this film the music is great i mean as someone who lived through 1998 at that point i had graduated university etc i wasn't in high school at that time
But, you know, it brought back, yeah, you know, it kind of captured that feel. And to me, that was a really good time in my life. And so I'm really, really, I'm with you, Dave. This is a 9 out of 10 for me. And I don't give high marks that easy. So to me, it's great. It was very 90s, fond memories, an amazing ensemble cast. And the one cast member nobody has mentioned. is Daniel Van Bargen.
who played one of the teachers. I forgot what's his role here. He played... He was the one complaining about the fact that the football team was going to get what they wanted when all their budgets were cut. Yes, I know that. As soon as they saw him? I said Kruger on Seinfeld. Oh, yes, nice. I thought you were going to say he was in the Lola Stobo. Oh, he could have been. He could have been a...
A police deputy back in 1981 or something. But yeah, if you've seen any of the ones with Seinfeld and Elaine, he's in that. But it's got a strong rockin' soundtrack. It's ratcheted up with the paranoia, which is kind of a blend of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the thing. And the other guy that really I thought did well in a very limited role is Jon Stewart. I was surprised. I was looking at him and said, boy, that's Jon Stewart. You think of him now from his talk show. But...
my God, he was really good as that science teacher. That scene where they, where they break the, the, the, what do you call it? The, it has all the water with all the fishes and all the, the aquarium. Yes. That was. that was as good a scene as you know you can get in this kind of film that's the one that that's the one that built the team that's that's the one because you know one of the things when you get to these sort of movies is the frustrating part
for an audience member because you're clued in from the beginning that yes this is going on there are aliens in this school alien parasites and the other characters you have elijah wood trying to tell everybody this is what's happening and everyone's like yeah sure whatever no
Oh, come on. That's ridiculous. It doesn't make any sense. Sure. If we didn't have that information, we'd be saying the same thing. But that's the frustrating part in movies like this. As one character is trying to convince everyone else. I loved about this movie is the scene where they do it which is the one I think you're talking about with Jon Stewart that for me was like that was so cool because at that moment everyone's like we're in let's get the hell out of here
The other thing, just as an inside thing, being a teacher, I loved hearing the bickering in the staff room because I'm not that far off. Oh, and did you see Harry Knowles from Ain't It Cool News who played Mr. Knowles? Yeah. The other thing I wondered about is Jon Stewart's character is called Mr. Furlong. Is that a play off Robert Patrick? Ed Furlong, yeah, it could be. Could be, yeah. Ed Furlong on T2, so.
And I know that it didn't maybe age quite as well, but I still like the pool scene. I do too. I like that scene. I like that scene quite a bit. And then the ending as they're running through the gymnasium. I don't know.
The effects, maybe because I was so into the movie, the effects didn't bother me as much. The only thing with that movie that I always find is cheese is when Elijah Wood is getting chased in the gym by the big monster under... all the seats yeah and then he happens to get a squished mere inches away from him and i'm like i don't know i think at that point you like because again because i like the characters so much
I didn't want to see it end any other way. I kind of wanted to see that be the end. And the other thing I wondered about, sorry, slight spoiler for a number that hasn't seen it. Elijah Wood had things thrown at him and it got under his skin. he didn't become infected. Why? Well, because anyone who doesn't want to hear spoilers, stop listening for the next 30 seconds. The reason he didn't become infected was because the idea was when the queen died, everyone would go back to.
normal yes he was becoming infected as the queen was dying yeah oh is that okay yes all right because it's been a while since i've seen him like i was kind of like a vampire yeah get bitten and before right yes it's like it's like if the head vampire like you think about um what was it um uh the the lost boys
You know, with the head vampire in that. Although, let's be honest, none of them actually changed back. I don't remember any of the vampires changing back. Well, what's his name? Michael. Jason Patrick. But never mind. We're off on another tangent. Yeah, fantastic film. Anybody who has not seen The Faculty, I shed no light on you. Go out and see it. It's worth it.
I totally agree. All right. Well, there is our first movie review of the night. The faculty chosen by Dave, Dr. Shop Becker. And he come in with a nine on that big bad puppy. And it's available. Let's see. We own it on DVD. I do not own that. No, I still have that original DVD as well. Same. I don't remember. It's got to be almost 20 years old now. I think pretty much most of the cast is alive still.
So this would be something that if Mr. Beam did... commentary on you'd be able to get everybody yeah i would definitely like to upgrade this one for sure so cool well there you go that is your review tonight so let's go ahead and get to uh some collars i think that would be fun to do and uh see what each one comes with so with that said hold one second so here we go with our first call and it's going to be patrick we're going to be patrick gunner first and he's uh his message was his top five
School horror movies were Scream, number one. Prom Night 2, Hello, Mary Lou was number two. Number three was Carrie. There you go, Bill. We was mentioning that off air. Pig blood, pig blood, pig blood, pig blood. I'm going to laugh at you. Number four was the faculty, Dave. And number five for him was the craft. And he said, this was really hard. I could have put so many more on here. So there was Patrick's.
top five school horror movies. So there you go. And I love that we were talking about it a little bit off air. I love that Hello Mary Lou made the list because I remember seeing that on cable back in the late 80s and just... kind of fallen in love with the movie. Is it great? No. You know what?
No, I'm going to take that back. I think it is kind of great. It is kind of great. I think it is kind of great. It's got its own flavor. It's very different from the first prom night. Is number two the one with Michael Ironside? Yes. It's the one with Michael Ironside. It's the one... oh god with the rocking horse there's so much I guess you could think about with that movie but yeah it's one that you could sort of look at
And you're sort of like you start watching it and you're making fun of it a little bit, but then you get wrapped up in it and you're like, wow, I'm really kind of into this movie. I want to see where it's going to go. I want to see what's going to happen to these characters. And every now and again, a guru.
thing will happen that takes you out of it a little but not enough for that that you don't want to see it to the end sure sure all right so let's go to our first column this was actually shocking guys before patrick gunner messaged his he's always first and darren from northern california is usually first or sack it but this week we had a number one a first timer or not a first timer but come in before patrick
Patrick and Darren, which is surprising. So let's go to this voicemail. Candyman? Candyman? No! Candyman? No! Candyman? Oh, wait, wrong show. Sorry. Yeah. That was 92 show. I'm calling in for the school horror now. Okay, man. I'm going to give you a top five. I know there's a ton of movies that deal with school, but I'm going to go with number five. It's going to be Hello, Mary Lou, Prom Night 2. Number four.
is uh carry the original number three would be screen i'm not sure if that really counts but i know a lot of that takes place in a school um Number two, I finally just got a gorgeous Blu-ray of Trick or Treat from 1986. And my number one movie that takes place in this school would hold lots of horror. I know...
Greg a couple years ago told me this wasn't a horror movie, but I kind of disagree. Just like if people can call Santa Lambs and Kate Fear Horror, this has got to be horror too. But it's all a matter of opinion. It's Class of 1984. Love this movie. Has murder, has skinning of animals, has rape. I mean, I don't know what's more horror than that. And the great Alice Cooper song with...
I am the future. Anyway, love the show. Love the 1992 show. It was really good. Long, still not finished it. Almost done, though. And just want everybody there to take care. Love everybody there. Bye. Nice, Derrick Johns. And I do not recall ever saying it was not horror. If I did, I did. But I don't recall that. You know what? I think we're going to be talking, a few movies are going to be brought up tonight that can sort of straddle the line. Oh, yeah.
Is it or is it not? Let's put it this way. They're definitely genre films. Yeah. You know, in his defense and other colors, if it's horror to you, then it's horror. That's true. There you go. That's right. You can't argue with yourself. Nope.
That's right. You're not going to lose. That's right. I love it. So I'll have to go back and find it. Send that to me. Let me know when I said that because I've got to go back because I have not seen it in a long time. So I need to rewatch it. But anyways, let's go to...
Let's go for Darren from Northern California. Hey, Greg Pearl, Dave Bill, Darren from Northern California calling. Okay. We are going back to school. My favorite Rodney Dangerfield movie, but that's not part of the topic. We're talking. School horror. I don't think it was specified that it has to be specifically high school. So mine's kind of all over the map. It's like high school, college, boarding school, stuff like that.
I'm going to go, my first one of my top five, I'm going to go back to 1957, a movie directed by Gene Fowler Jr. I Was a Teenage Werewolf, starring Michael Landon.
I really got a kick out of this movie when I was a kid. And, you know, and I thought Michael Landon really, really played it. He looked like he was having a lot of fun with it. Interesting enough, and his... last tv series before he passed away highway to heaven there was like a halloween episode where he actually got back into that werewolf makeup and it was a pretty cool episode something worth checking out
Next on my list is Happy Death Date 2017 by Christopher Landon. I know it's PG-13 horror, but it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a lot more than a... Apparently, a lot of people did. But I thought it was a really good movie, a good Groundhog Day-style movie. Next is Black Christmas by Bob Clark, 1974. I mean, one of the greatest Christmas horror films ever made. And yes, it is in a school, so it definitely counts. Next is Halloween H20 by Steve Miner, 1998.
Mark Kimmy Lee Curtis' return to the franchise, and also features the original Scream Queen, her mother, Janet Leigh. And that was one of the... Definitely better entries in the Halloween franchise. And finally, and Pearl, you can go, ah, Carrie by Brian De Palma of 1976 with John Travolta in the background.
You know, one of the best prom scenes in a horror film you'll ever see. All right. Hope you guys have a great show, and I will talk to you next time. Take care. Bye-bye. Great call. And there was that big, big, big blood. I will say that Rodney's performance as Al Chervik in Caddyshack is probably still my favorite. But that's not a Rodney Dangerfield movie. It was part of an ensemble.
the best Rodney Dangerfield movie is definitely Back to School. True. Yeah, it's such a good one. Let's go to one more call, and then we'll go into Bill's feature review tonight. Let's see who we got here. Well, hey there, Pearl, Greg, Dave, Bill. It's me. It's the Tardy Guy, a.k.a. Mr. Greg's Teddy Bear. Love you, man. Anyway, so I'm enjoying listening to the best of 1991 episode right now. So naturally, I'm calling in about the survival horror episode. Here we go.
My favorite survival horror films from the years 2020 to 2025 are number five, Prey. The amazing mono-alien prequel to the Predator movies. Very exciting. All about survival. That's right. Number four, I've heard this on some of the lists. This film is near and dear to my heart. It's No One Will Save You. Probably my favorite alien invasion movie for whatever reason. It's quiet. It's simple. Terrifying. Number three. I'm going to cheat a little bit here. No, no, no, Bill.
Not a tie. But my number three is a TV show. This is Showtime's Yellow Jackets, which is about a girl's soccer team trying to survive in the wilderness of Canada, I believe so. Pretty great stuff. Number two, one of my favorite movies. It was my favorite movie of the year it came out, and that is Barbarian, trying to survive the horrors of a basement basement. That's right, double basements.
Pretty terrifying. And then number one, the best survival film of this age is, of course, Ready or Not, starring the enchanting Samara Weaving. That's right, Dave. You got it right. Two notes. First off, before the notes, a thank you. Thanks for mentioning that I do zombie scholarship and giving a shout out to my...
Weird little eye zombie paper. I appreciate that. Also, yes, it's true. I do literally use the Internet Movie Database when I'm creating my classic syllabi. It is true, and I'm not going to apologize for it. because i worked hard to get here and then last and not least uh you guys on the survival horror episode talked about alive hashtag alive and alone these are two films made from the same script one in
South Korea, one in America. And I have discussed both of these films together on Dead Man Still Walking, episode 54. So there you have it, folks. You heard it from me, the tardy guy. Because I eventually get around to it. That was Kyle Bishop, man. I love it. I love Kyle so much because you know what? Just as you're feeling kind of bad for him because he's always an episode behind, what does he do? He falls two episodes behind.
That's impressive. I was just going to say, he's now slowed himself down. He's falling even further behind. Probably by the time we're talking about our top 10 of 1996, he'll call in about 92. That's right. And I can't wait. I can't wait to hear what he comes up with. That's right. I mean, I love Kyle. Kyle's great, and I'll text him here and there. Mr. Bishop, I wonder if at some point in your lectures with your learned students, if you would play portions of Land of the Creeps.
as an example of either what to do or what not to do. That's up to you. Probably what not to do. Yeah, I'm sort of leaning in that direction myself. We really appreciate it. But if they can play some of our analysis, and then they have to break it down. God, I'm worried about what would come out. Yeah. And don't send us the papers to grade. No, no. I just give them B, B, B. Yeah, you're right. Grade them all on a curve. That's right. On a B curve.
That's right. Well, we love Kyle. He's been traveling a ton, so I appreciate it. God, he's so busy. With the lectures he's doing and, of course, his class and everything, it's amazing he finds time to call in at all. all so that's right we appreciate it very much thank you sir we do love you buddy you are my great big teddy bear buddy kyle it took all the way till now but we finally finished our last container of squirty juice
It took all the wait until April, so it lasted us that long. Thanks, Kyle. Now, my birthday's coming up in June, so we could use a new... Let's start a fund to get Bill a new squirty. Because by the time Kyle hears this, it's going to be 2026. That's right, yeah. By the time he hears this, it's going to be probably a month after your birthday. It's going to be sitting on your doorstep as you're on.
off camping and it'll rot okay let's get to uh our next feature review tonight so we're gonna go over to bill the butcher van bagel bill what is the movie you chose and why did you chose it Chose it. Choose it. Why did you choose it? And take it away with your plot. All right, Bill, what you got for your movie, buddy? All right. So this is my process. This is my thought going into this.
There's so many of these familiar movies that involve school that I just wanted to find one I hadn't seen. And so I typed into Tubi, Detention. And there was a movie called Detention. So I was like, okay, let's go with it. It was 2011. It got a 5.6 rating on IMDB. I'm wondering how many of the crew put in there. yeah how many how many people voted was it like 13 or uh 17 000. oh wow okay so no hey that and you know what for all for a horror film on imdb
At 5.6, that's not bad. I mean, that's almost like a 7.8 on any other genre. So I'm sitting there going, oh, okay. Well, this is a 2011 film, as I say, called Detention, directed by Joseph Kahn. Kahn? Kahn. K-A-H-N. And I didn't know anything about him. Turns out he does mostly music videos.
So he shot for and you can kind of tell on the style. For example, he shot videos for Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, Lenny Kravitz, Nicki Minaj, etc, etc, etc. uh it stars josh hutcherson and it appears that he was in a whole bunch of the hunger games films so i showed it to jen and she's like oh yeah yeah i know that guy uh he was in five night at freddy's and zathura
That also stars someone called Shanley Caswell, who was in The Conjuring. Dane Cook, who I had seen him on a few... comedy clips or something but i really didn't know him very well but apparently he was in mr brooks and my best friend's girl and the other name i knew of was daniel negrano daniel negrano was a canadian poker player that's been like a world champion
I think he played a reporter or something like that. Wow. So I was like, okay, there's all kinds of possibilities here. The description is... As a copycat killer named after the movie villain Cinder Hela stalks the student body at Grizzly Lake High School, a group of co-eds band together to survive. while serving detention that description actually sounds pretty good you know like a horror version of the breakfast club you know that's what i was that's what i was thinking uh no
Okay. So it opens with an annoying social media blogger, female, getting killed. And she's going on and complaining about things and, you know, her parents don't understand her. And thankfully she gets killed right off the bat. She wasn't complaining after she was killed. Then it would become a supernatural film. Right. So then I was kind of going, what the fuck is this all about? And immediately I put, I can see the influence of the music video directing style.
You know, it was trying to be edgy and hip, but it was almost trying too hard, too hard. Like, for example, there were credits that were rolling as the movie goes. So some of the credits you could found in a urinal. Or in a locker lock. Or math equations were being done in midair. And you're like, somebody's trying just a little too hard. It almost seemed to me like a series of skits involving parodies of high school in the early 2000s with lots of 80s and 90s references.
At one point, the football team was working out or something, and somebody references Bronson Pinchot. The movie Roadhouse gets brought up. Lots of references to Sting and Fields of Gold. Ralph Macchio and the Karate Kid. Again, they're throwing them in there. I would describe this as meta horror to an extent, but...
I don't know if it quite hits the mark. There is some Canadian content in there. For example, they get a transfer student at the high school. He's from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Shout out to Lunenburg, anybody who's from there. And he's wearing a Calgary Flames jersey. And he's going on about vegetarians. Like, where the hell is this? The first half hour is just the most inane talking back and forth among...
18 year olds about but it's done in a style that's trying to be edgy and hip as i described to the boys it was kind of like you know john dies in the end except one tenth is good if you kind of get that style i had no idea where the story was going until an axe wielding princess shows up in the hallway turns out it wasn't a princess it's just a guy with long hair and a funny mask
He's kind of like wearing a dress. And so these people have their skills. There's a lot of communication back and forth. It's the everyday life of a 19, 18, 17-year-old. And in this school, there is something involving a cheerleader that had sex with a stuffed bear. And somebody's coming back years later to kill. Like, it's just... what the hell is this about it seems very disjointed I found that it had a happy death day vibe or a scary movie mixed in there
The killer is based on a movie character called Cinder Hella. I mean, I guess that's sort of creative. I don't mind that too much. But it just didn't seem cohesive. Just a bunch of ideas with 80s and 90s cultural references thrown in there. It took 50 minutes to get to detention. So the first 50 minutes, it's just their inane lives, their menial things that they do with one another to get to that point. Every once in a while, there'll be a kill. They're not outstanding.
There is some decent visual effects, and it's obvious that the director is a fan of the genre. He makes lots of Easter eggs and lots of references, and it's obvious that he's known them. It's just way too over the top and disjointed for me. You know, for example, I kind of summarized the last half hour and it involves time travel, a prom, screwing a stuffed bear, and lots of sting references.
With romance in the last half hour. Ugh. So, and a really bad Steven Seagal fight sequence. Is Steven Seagal a lady? He's not in it, but they... They mimic Steven Seagal. Okay, so it's a Steven Seagal-like. Yeah. Well, he actually says, just like Steven Seagal in Under Siege, I'm going to...
Oh, God. And it was like him and Chuck Norris, I believe. Was it Chuck? Was the guy? No, who was it? He was supposed to be fighting like somebody, and the other one was fighting like Steven Seagal. I don't know. Here's what I put. Five out of ten. tried too hard and missed the point. So that's my... It sounds like what you're saying is it's sort of like almost like a... I haven't seen it.
So this is, you know, coming from someone who has no knowledge of this film whatsoever. But it sounds like it's almost like you're saying it's skits. Well, it's almost like Monty Python's like, you know, and now for something completely different where they're doing, well, that's probably not a good example. Let's go with Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
where there are vignettes there are skits yeah based on the same theme and based on the same characters and same story like the scenes are connected and they roll together but they don't necessarily blend with each other All right. So there's like like so that might be one of the pitfalls.
Having a director who specializes in music videos making a feature film. Some of them make the transition great. Spike Jones made some great music videos. And he's one of the great directors, I think, from like, I mean. he did being John Malkovich and adaptation and where the wild things are. He's made a lot of good movies. Some of them can make that transition. Maybe some of them can't. And I don't know this director.
You know, I don't know this director. I think I think he's used to making like five minute films. And the other red flag I should have seen is, you know, you go to a movie on IMDb and they might say horror action. fantasy this one is dark comedy parody slasher horror comedy horror mystery romance thriller i don't know if there's any more room to put something in there so if you are somebody that likes meta horror, this was kind of in the wave after scream, but like 0.2% of it.
So I gave it, I was generous. I gave it a five. It has good production value. And some of the actors aren't bad. But the direction, the vision, and the script was just awful. I texted Greg, and I said, Greg goes, I'm watching your film, Bill. What the fuck did you make me watch? Yeah, yeah. So, Greg, I'm very curious. take is anything i missed overlooked no sound like greg's coming in a five out of ten no this is like
The first half of this movie was taken. If you remember the movie Hereditary, when the kid bangs his face up against the table and his nose bursts open and blood goes everywhere. watching the first half of this movie, I felt like I was banging my head on the table. And I was like, dude, I felt like my nose was going to break. I'm like, what in the hell am I watching? This is like... And there's movies that draw comparisons. The movie from 2023...
Totally killer where the girl goes back in time. And then if you do something in time that you can shift and you can cause other. So there's these aspects in the last act of this movie and something about climbing in a bear's belly. But here's the thing. You got a good cast. I'm not saying the cast is bad. It's what's so weird about it. The cast is actually good.
But the problem with the cast is they're not known for horror, and there's probably a reason for that. As soon as I saw Dane Cook pop up on the screen, I'm like, fuck, no wonder. And I'm not knocking Dane Cook, but he's just straight up slapstick. comedian. It's just when you think horror, you don't immediately think Dane Cook. No, and this movie plays a Dane Cook style. It's like a slapstick.
poke fun, try to make a horror movie, whatever. So the acting, like Shanlah Caswell, who played Riley, the main actress in this movie, I liked her. She's quirky. She's goofy. I think people of that era... of the early mid 2000s if you were in school in that era you know if you're that young you would probably dig this movie because you're used to this style of movie watching as far as music i don't think it's a generational thing
just shit well i think it's because we're of a different generation and we watch movies i think the newer generation that is used to watching youtube clips and tiktok clips and different things they probably won't dislike this as much and they probably recognize a lot of the cast i personally
Thought it was like banging my head on the wall. And I was like really ready to shut this thing off in like 10 minutes. And I stuck with it. Right, Pearl? Yep. I rolled with it. Yep. Did it get better? Eh. But... But there's some gore that you got that. And there is some effects in here that are not bad. I will say that. But overall, it's just the script itself was just ridiculously stupid. And it just comes off goofy to me. So I don't know.
what'd you think of it it made me think a little bit like uh kind of happy death day with all the going back and forth you know try and get things right made me think of freaky because it had a lot of Crazy. Yeah. Conclude what moment?
i have my moments of laugh like yeah out of everything like you know going back in time that's gonna change something the girl leaves her boot behind and it's like really it's your boot that's gonna change time you know and That skit that you guys were talking about, Chuck Norris versus Steven Seagal moves.
It made me feel like a video game when you're picking more combat. Like, oh, I'm going to be Katana while you be Johnny Cage. I mean, it had its moments. Yeah, because like Steven Seagal, he mentioned about how nobody can penetrate my defense. He's got the defense. Yeah, because he got the quickest move, so he used his while Chuck Norris had the spot on. Yeah, that was funny. Yeah. But, I mean, I still had some fun with it. But, like I said, moments. Yeah.
After 20 minutes, I was like, I could have chosen all kinds of ones. And so sometimes when you go and you go in blind, you find nuggets. And sometimes you find turds. Yeah, there were more turds along the way. But I will say, like, I would almost rather watch a low end to be filmed sometimes because at least they're entertaining. They can be. Yeah, I've got I've watched so many as well. I think I. went half through the 2b movies already and i'm like oh less than two handfuls i like yeah
So Dave, you missed a real one hell of a movie. You missed a barn burner, buddy. My God, you're going to be up tonight saying, fuck, Bill, why didn't I see it? Exactly. I hope I can pay $15 to stream this. Yeah. I have no idea. I will say the third act is better than any. I'm setting a price based on the 5.6 on IMDB. Yeah, the third act is the best part of the movie. Dude, 5.6 for a horror film on IMDb with 17,000 votes behind it, that's really...
damn good. There are 80 slasher classics that haven't hit that. It has to be honestly, and this isn't a detriment, but it has to be people that were between the ages of 20 and 30 that did it. okay that made it go up because it can't be people who worked on the film there's no way 17 000 people worked on this film but so it's more than that it's people who saw this and this meant something to them and that's
That's impressive. Right. And you know what? I would have been with you when I see, you know, there's there's something about IMDb with like you see a six point five and above on any other genre. And then you see a 5.2 and above on horror. They're equivalent. Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. You know, and so when you see a 5.6 on IMDb, I would have been with you. I would have been, hey, this might be something worth checking out. Yeah, I mean, here's the thing. I'll say it again.
It had a large cast of people that I think of that era you would recognize. So maybe that has something to do with people tuning in because it's recognizable faces in some of them. They're just not known in the horror genre. But I don't know. It is what it is. We knew the music. We did know the music. I will say that. It's funny. I watched it beside Jen. She was sitting on the couch reading or something. And I had it going on. And she goes, you know what I like best? The music.
It's catchy. It's a catchy soundtrack that... works for this movie and just think of the movie now it's not in comparison as far as of quality but think of your movies that we've seen in the recent you know decades where you talk about like totally killer or you think about final girls or you think about those movies is kind of yeah you know you're the killer what's that one oh yeah yeah yeah i know yeah yeah but but this is for the some 41 crowd yeah that's what this is for yeah sure absolutely
Cool. You got anything else on it, Bill? Other than I don't want to watch it again. Yeah, this is definitely, I will never watch this again, ever. Never. I won't say it's my Chainsaw Massacre 4, but it was right damn near it. I was going to say, give me trauma. Yeah. Oh, God, yes, any day. Well, at least Troma knows what it is. Exactly. But it's a cool poster. You think it's going to be kind of... The poster looks awesome.
I know what they were doing. That's where all the money went. Yeah. Alrighty. I don't think we can, you can only put so much lipstick on a pig. You can only polish a turd so much. That's right. So let's unpolish this turd and get to you, the listeners, and get some good quality in here. Let's see what you guys come up with. Let's go to our voicemails. Hey, creepers.
It's G-Rag down in North Kakalaki. Other Greg from Wilmington calling. I just listened to the 1993 episode. I wanted to say thank you for the shout-out from Monkeybone. Dave, Dr. Shock, thank you so much for my Jack Palance and Martin Landau mini film festival. I feel lined up very well for that. Nice call in, by the way, Phil. You're too busy with your fantasy baseball draft.
All right. That's cool. You fantasize about baseball players? It's cool. I get it. Everybody's got to have a little something extra on the side. Anyway, so I just wanted to drop in my two cents about 1993. Sorry, I'm driving while calling in. I usually listen to the show while I'm driving, so today I'm going to kill two birds, one stone. Something is in my mirror. I don't know what that is. It's the weirdest thing. Anyway, so, yeah, driving. Sorry about that. I'll try not to.
get too distracted by the mirror here anyway i've got one one movie i think it's all top five as far as i'm concerned so it's anti-tie right if i'm saying five the same movie for five instead of one movie for more than one spot anyway so it's anti-tie because to me 1993 is all about one movie and what is that in my mirror all right anyway i you'll never guess it's candy man
One, Candyman two, Candyman three, Candyman four, and Candyman to round up my top five. That's right. It's Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman from all five of my top five of 1993. Hey. Hey, whatever was wrong with my mirror is cleared up now. It's like whatever was in the way is now free. I better go. He's got to be talking about 1992, his top five. Yeah, well, he's saying 93, but I think we know what he's talking about. He's the opposite of Kyle. Unless...
Yes, he's ahead of us. Unless he's in the future. Greg is ahead, yes. Unless he did watch Detention and did time travel. He could have jumped in a bear's belly and jumped forward. Man. But would we have had Candyman in there? I don't know. We're going to say Candyman way too many times. Well, we've already said it more than. Andy Cam. Andy Cam. Five times, you know. All right, Cole G. Ray. Thank you for that, brother. I think it's hilarious how Anthony R. hung up.
That episode before he got the vibe. Yeah. That was awesome. Let's go to our next caller. Hello, LLTC. It's Buffalo Paul calling in for this awesome topic of... School-related horror. I'm just going to give you a five. The first five I thought of, they're in no order. So for my number five, let's start off with a bunch of elementary school-age kids. This is probably my favorite.
killer kid movie. What about 1981's Bloody Birthday? And for number four, let's go to high school for this one. This one was actually shot in Hollywood High in Los Angeles. This is 1986's Neon Maniacs. It's a crazy movie. I got to say, it's pretty batshit crazy, but I like it, though. It has a really cool battle of the band scene. shot in a high school uh give that one a shot and now let's go to college for my number three picks let's go to the falcon academy
where a bunch of Olympic hopefuls are getting picked off by a cloaked figure who's using a javelin. This is a very underrated 1984's Fatal Game. Yes, javelins. For my number two pick. You know, I'm more of a 70s and 80s horror guy, but every once in a while we get a good one. And this is a modern maddest masterpiece. I think this one's actually tied with The Exorcist for me, for the best.
possession horror movie. This is 2015's The Black Coat's Daughter by Osgood Perkins. This is his masterpiece. Every time I see this movie, it just gets better and better for me. So yeah, The Black Coat's Daughter. Absolutely amazing film. And for the last one I'm going to talk about, yeah, this one is from 1983. This one has a pretty famous quote. I'm a sea pig. Yes, it's Mark Rossman's The House on Sorority Grove. I really like this movie. This one...
And Quentin Tarantino also is a pretty big fan of this movie. You know, we don't get a lot of good acting in the 80s, and this one, it gave you good acting. It was filmed very well. It's a pretty basic premise. But it's got a really good score and a really badass movie poster. So I was always a fan of that one. It's got a really good remake, too. So, yeah, last one I'm going to talk about is The House on Sorority Row. Check that one out if you haven't seen it.
And that's all I got. So I can't wait to hear what everybody else comes up with. And thank you for keeping horror alive. I love it, Buffalo Paul. The House on Sorority Row really is a strong movie. But... That said, I had completely forgotten that the Black Coat's daughter is set at a school.
I wanted to watch that, pull back the veil. That was the one I was going to pick, but it was not streaming anywhere, and I do not own it, believe it or not. I think I know I own it. I don't know if I have it on DVD, if I have it on Blu-ray, but But, wow, that's a great choice. That's a great choice. You have it on Blu-ray.
I have it on Blu-ray. Nice. I remember watching that the first time knowing nothing and going, wow. Yeah, that's the one where you look and you say, wow, Oz Perkins, who is this guy? Was that his debut? No, I think he made a movie before it, but I think this one came out before the movie he made initially. Yeah, so I didn't get a chance to watch it because I wanted to watch it for the episode. So, yeah.
Osgood Perkins. There you go. And I love the fact that he mentioned Fatal Games. Holy crap. I know Brian Scott's screaming right now. That is one of the goofiest slasher movies in the 80s, man. But God, that javelin scene is awesome. And you just don't get javelins in horror movies often. It's amazing how many 80s horror films are set out of school. Yeah, I know, right? 80s slasher films. I'm sorry, 80s slasher films are set out of school. Is the Prowler at the school?
Well, they're at a prom. Yeah, that's what I'm sort of remembering. I don't know if it's – what is that? Is that just a dance? I can't remember if that was a prom or a formal dance or something. Yeah, I can't remember either, but it just sort of seems like – there's a group of people together who would not otherwise be together right that seems to be a school setting for me did anybody mention final exam
I don't think anybody's mentioned it yet. Not yet, no. Oh, sorry. No, but you know what? If you're talking about a top 10 horror films, that wouldn't make it. Dave, I love you for so many reasons, but your in-depth analysis is always it. Let's go to our next caller. Hello, creeps. This is Derek Johns from Canada calling in. I already called in earlier. I'm the one with the class of 1984 as my number one. I don't think I left my name. Sorry about that.
So I thought I'd call to reaffirm that that was my phone call in case I didn't. And Greg, one other high school movie or college, how could we forget about? one a year or your favorite franchise halloween but not talking number one because there was a school scene but h2o was one i left off my list still a good a really good movie seven out of ten for me for that movie
That's all I was calling for this time. Bye. Another Josh Harnett. I love H2O. I'm a big fan of that movie. I think H2O is a really strong entry in the Halloween. franchise. It is, unfortunately. Now, what avenue does that one take? Does that one, like, acknowledge Halloween and Halloween 2, but ignores... Yeah, that one falls in with the Halloween 1 and 2. It kind of falls in that. Okay, and then it takes off from...
From Halloween 2, and then it becomes H2O. Yeah, it doesn't follow 4 or 5 or anything. Well, 3 is off on its own. That's not part of anything. So it ignores 4 and 5 and 6, obviously. Yes. All right. And then when we get to the new ones with David Gordon Green, they ignore everything from Halloween 2 on. Exactly. They just go after one. Yeah. I remember seeing H2O in the theater. H2O is a great. It's a lot of fun. I think it's a really good film.
Yeah, the only fault is, like I said, the Michael Myers mask is weak in that because some of it's CGI and whatnot. But regardless, it's still a damn good movie. I fucking enjoy it and I'll fight for it. And you know what, Derek? We knew it was you. That's one of the great things about the community is we can tell from the voice who it is. That's right. Even if you don't identify yourself, we knew it was you. Once you've called in twice, we know.
Let's go to one more call here and then we'll head over to Pearl and get her feature review. Let's go to this one. What is up, creeps? This is Mike, a.k.a. that horror teacher. Calling from the backwoods of North Kakalaki. Now, of course, for horror in the schools or school horror episode, of course, that horror teacher had to chime in here.
There's a lot of different ways to go here. There's so obviously so many horror movies star feature high school students, especially all those 80s slashes and stuff. I mean, if we're just going for like favorite movies that have school settings. I'm a huge fan of the Black Coats Daughter, kind of a boarding school during Christmas, I guess is what you'd say that one was. And obviously she's green. It's a great example of high schoolers.
as a teacher if you were to ask me which horror movies best represent either high school or high school students i think the two best are ginger snaps and jennifer's body I feel like those cover things that are really true in high school. And I feel like the opening credits of Ginger Snaps is brilliant. And the way that's done and the angst and the...
sarcasm, cynicism put across there by those two characters is brilliant. And I really think that movie captures a whole lot about the rat race of high school and Jennifer's body captures a lot of things about high school that is true. including how everyone weirdly comes together after tragedy and the way they handle that in the movie is really brilliant. So I think those are awesome. I'm sure everyone's seen them, but if not, definitely check them out. I'm sure others will talk about them.
And anyway, hope you all have a great show. Thanks for all you do. Thanks for keeping Aura alive. And, of course, suit! Love Mike, man. Love him. Great. From Nork Hakey Lakey. Nice. All right, Pearl, it's time for you to get to your feature review. So name the movie you chose, why you chose it, and let's get a review. Well, I'm going to say, Mike, great minds think alike. I might not be a teacher, but I used to be a teacher's aide. Okay.
My movie was Jennifer's Body. Very cool. So, the reason I chose this one was, one, being a Megan Fox fan.
But two, because it had everything that I liked in it. It had sarcasm, a good cast. It had great songs. And the atmosphere was... pretty much everything and in the fact of like dating wise or competitions etc etc and i thought this is exactly how horror school would be So when a demon takes possession of her high school hottie Jennifer, turns into a hungry eye who never stands a chance before her because while Jennifer satisfies her appetite for human flesh,
With the school male population, her nerdy friend Needy learns what's happening and vows to put an end to the carnage. Yeah, this was from a director from Karen Kusama. And most people know her like from Girl Fight. You know, she's done. a lot of strong films in the past. And didn't she do The Invitation? Yes, she did. She did The Invitation. Yeah, which is an amazing movie. Oh, yeah. Yeah, and The Destroyer, and even Eon Flux. I mean, yeah.
Oh, The Destroyer with Nicole Kidman. Yes. Yeah, that's a good movie as well. Yeah. So she's really strong on her women films. So with another reason, again, that made me want to... The first time when I watched Jennifer Body, I loved it. You have Needy, who's... introducing us to this film where you see her locked up in a juvenile location and she's talking how like life just happens sometimes
When life happens, you just never know what you're going to get or what's going to occur. And she's talking about herself where she said that she wasn't always like this. And she is known as a kicker. And she seems... oddly proud of it now needy is supposed to be more of a quiet shy helps everyone smiles and she's a good girlfriend to her boyfriend
Her best friend is the popular girl. She's the one that every guy wants to date her. The way she puts it, tits are her trait. You point them in the right direction, shit happens. One day, they decide, instead of hanging out with her boyfriend, Jennifer decides to take Needy to a bar that pretty much is their only bar. Nothing really happens in that place, but it's the go-to place. She wants to see a ban that she saw on Myspace.
I was going to say, I made note of that saying, I hadn't heard of that in 15 years. Yeah, I remember MySpace. Same, I do too. Pearl, I remember MySpace being such a weird... For those younger, that was the precursor to Facebook. Yeah, that was the first Facebook. I mean, it was fun because you can change the background and do all these kind of things and then all of a sudden shit went down and all of a sudden it became Hookup Central.
But, you know, she saw this band called Low Shoulder, and they decide to, you know, go see this band. Well... The band, she goes there and she's offering them that she'll get them a drink, but they had to drink it fast because it turned brown. And he's like, okay, you know, I'll get this drink. Well, while she's doing that, needy hears, overhears.
the band guy talking saying what about her i mean does she look like a virgin maybe she's not and he's like no she might not be of course needy defending her friend goes up to the guy and you know basically calls him an asshole and says for your information she is a virgin and you know wouldn't even bother with guys like you unfortunately she gave them that confirmation
They start singing, and then they're both in the audience. They're listening to Low Shoulder, and suddenly, things go a little weird as he's singing. Suddenly, Jennifer looks like she's in a trance.
She's excited about seeing this guy and everything. She calls him extra salty, which means he's beautiful and all that, etc, etc. Suddenly a fire breaks out. Now Nidhi's seeing everyone like getting... trampled over bones cracking you see like part of the buildings falling on top of people people are burning to death and and meanwhile jennifer's still standing there like not moving an inch and neither are the guys from the band
But Needy, of course, pulls her friend, takes her out to the bathroom window, and they get out. And while they're out there, all of a sudden, the band members are out there, and they're saying, oh, you know, we were looking for everyone, you know, trying to help people, blah, blah, blah. Decide, you know, take Jennifer. They were like, we'll take you, we'll help you, blah, blah, blah, get you home. Nini doesn't want her to go in the van. She doesn't trust them, but...
All of a sudden, Jennifer's like, no, you know, stop being this way. Let me go and blah, blah, blah. So she lets her go. Needy gets home, says, hey, you know, calls her boyfriend Chip. says like you know worried about Jennifer saying that she went in this band's creepy white van and she don't know where she's at suddenly she hears noises and she's investigating doesn't see nothing and then all of a sudden
Jennifer's there. Jennifer don't look like Jennifer. She's still stiff. She's dirty, bloody like hell. Smiles at Needy and decides to raid her refrigerator. Try to find anything she can to eat and it's not working. Instead she pukes out this black prickly tar looking stuff.
that makes needy end up cleaning all night long meanwhile at school she's worried and all of a sudden jennifer comes in walking like nothing she looks she looks actually extra beautiful she's she's her skin's glowing her hair looks perfect everything she knows it she's like you know i feel great
You know, kids are mourning the loss of the people that died in the fire. Meanwhile, she's happy about how her lip gloss looks. The other one's saying, aren't you sad at all? And she's like... no it wasn't us you know so you know as the time goes on she's noticing like wait a minute something's wrong with her because a few days later she looks nasty she looks
lifeless and everything and she said I don't know what's going on it's probably wearing off and she thought well what do you mean she's you know doesn't answer her and then all of a sudden you see another kid from from the school the football player Sad about his friend dying and everything. But she goes up to him and says, you know, I was the last person to talk to him. Luring him to the woods. And, you know, of course, hitting on him.
Acting like she's gonna have sex with him and instead You know looks weird and creepy because all the animals are even coming to watch That was the first introduction knowing that what was wrong with Jennifer all of a sudden her mouth opens wide she has teeth long as longer than fangs and she is eating this guy and you hear his screams and people are you know the one of the teachers hears him and
He's like, okay, let it out. You let it out. But not knowing that he was getting killed. They call him when they once they find him, they call him, you know, he was eaten and looked like a lasagna. So that's how they describe him. Suddenly, next day, Jennifer looks great again. Now that got Needy wondering what's going on. And this keeps reoccurring until Needy kind of like, you know, because they're best friends since childhood.
She can feel a lot more because of the strong connection that they have. She knows something's wrong. She's asking her. She won't tell her. But then one day. she kind of she decides to tell her she's like okay you know what happened with with the band they took me out to the woods you know they try to sacrifice me they didn't know I wasn't a virgin shit happened
You know, they threw her down a devil's kettle. That's what they call it. And, I mean, for a long time, people have been throwing things down there to see if anything comes out. Well, she was proof that something came out of there. But I guess what, you know, needy... you know, paid attention and went and did research and found out that when, you know, you get sacrificed to a demon, you know, and if it goes wrong, you can literally come back as one.
Well, she did. She came back as one that particularly only wants to eat boys. So that's how she's doing it. killing off the boys writing a yearbook looking at through them saying yummy on one and appetizers and all yeah Nidhi realizes, you know, through the whole ordeal, she realizes once she starts hitting on her boyfriend, and she's like, you know, now it's like back off, and she knows she has to take care of her friend. She knows who's killing people there.
you know, gets to her and of course there's a big major girl fight and she decides to go to prom. And she thinks she's going to trap her there, but instead Jennifer had other plans. She went to go find Chip and take him, and unfortunately she does get to him. Needy doesn't get there on time, so what happens there, it makes her come back mode. And she's like, I'm getting rid of Jennifer. She decides that she's going to go to her home.
Finds a box cutter and gets to her. She gets caught with it from Jennifer's mom. It's not shown, but I'm assuming that she got blamed for all the murders of the boys instead of Jennifer.
And that's where it comes back to where she's talking in that juvenile delinquent place and she escapes and she says she's... going to look for low shoulder because they're having their last day of tour and a little small cameo too from her driver which is lance henderson she does what she promised she takes care of low shoulder And she's on the run. And also another reason why I also picked this movie because I hear that it's finally getting a sequel. I'm interested in that one. I am too.
I think with her coming back, she's been in, what, two or three movies in the last year and a half. So I think she's finally starting to get back into movie making. So that could be interesting. Yeah. Even though I don't know how she comes back. Well, I mean. Maybe they're going to leave stuff behind or something. But, I mean, Needy would come back because that's what I left out too. It's like...
What most people don't know is that if you get bitten by a demon, you become one. So that's how she escaped because she already had some demonic powers with her. So what was your overall feel of this movie like? Just that. I mean... You had the trust of a best friend you grew up with, and then you kind of, you know, once growing up, you find out that someone wasn't truly a friend to you. They just used you. You know we're in competition with you sort of say and then same time too
So acknowledging Needy's boyfriend, I mean, being so young, he was still a very considerate individual that makes you feel like, oh, you know, he learned right from his mom. You know, he's going to grow up to be a nice romantic guy, you know.
the band you know where they're like they want what every other band wants they want fortune and fame and unfortunately some go cray cray do anything for it so that's why it felt the realness of horror of school because the horror is the bullying you know being left unforgettable being left behind or things happening or someone tries to steal your boyfriend you know so and then of course the
Demon stuff. What's a plus? Yeah, I liked Amanda Seyfried in this one as Needy. I thought she was really good. And I remember her, she was in that Red Riding Hood. movie that she'd done really good in as well and megan fox she looked hot and she was cool in the movie they picked the right one for that character uh johnny simmons is chip man he was awesome he was he was like that nerdy kid but
You root for them by the end. You're like, oh, I like Needy. And that Through the Tree song, Pearl Knows, I love that song. And they play it a lot in this movie. Almost. too much honestly but I do really love that song and it was at the point where
I wanted to have that song in my playlist, which I've got it now. But here's the thing. Like when I was listening to it, I'm watching the guys who are playing low shoulder in the band. They're clearly not the singers or anything of the band of the actual song.
But I was like, okay, I could kind of see the lead guy being the guy that could sing this song. So it worked, you know, as a band. You didn't have somebody look totally off. Like, I was like, yeah, it looks like he could probably sing that song. So that's all it works. The effects in this is really good, Pearl.
Yeah, it is. Yeah, it's really fun. What did you think of this one, Bill? I liked it. Full disclosure, I had never seen it. It was one of those ones that had just gotten through and I hadn't had the chance to... tracked down and it never really came up as a topic in the episode so i really look forward to watching this my first note pearl mention of myspace
I know. Boy, did that bring it back to early 2000s. But what I also liked is the people that made this film were fans of classic rock and roll.
because you know right off the bat i heard two tickets to paradise i was like okay you don't just randomly choose that song for a soundtrack so someone knew it i like the rock and roll vibe to it uh it kind of had that you know upbeat you know and she goes up to the bar and shows her assets she goes i'll just what did she say i'll flash my tits and get the get the drink because she's underage um And of course, we haven't mentioned for Ashley about her getting a wedding.
i laughed but as soon as i saw that scene i go okay i get it i like jk simmons in this yeah as the teacher. And the other guy I liked in a very small role was Bill Fagerback. Oh, man. That's what I was. Yes. Dauber. Yes. Dauber from Coach. And the voice of Patrick Starr in SpongeBob. And what's really cool is he's the one cast.
member of spongebob who does not disguise his voice i remember watching the very first episode of spongebob that had patrick star in it and i go oh my god it's dauber from kobe But I wrote down his quote. It's after his, it was his son that got killed. Jonas. Yes. And he goes, I'll cut off your nutsack and use it as a door knocker. That's right up there with. Great Bill Fagerbach quotes as hard on stick must die. I did think towards the end it got a little bit melodramatic. Right.
And then my last note literally was they left it open to a sequel. Did they consider one? And you guys just said they are. Is it coming out? Is it in production or? Yeah. Needy, well, Amanda, she finally confirmed that it is in the talks, the script's being written, and they're working on it. Yeah, I mean, the movie's just about over.
I mean, full disclosure, I watched it at about 1 in the morning, and I'm sitting there going, oh, shit, that's Lance Hendrickson. Is that Lance Hendrickson? Yeah. But yeah, I really enjoyed it. I gave it, I think, a solid 7.5 out of 10. Yeah, and it's funny because of the fact Chris Pratt being in this one, too. That was a shock. There's a lot of little cameos. You've got to keep your eyes open. What's your rating on this one, Pearl? For me, because I love it, it's eight. Eight.
Eight out of ten? Mm-hmm. All right, cool. I'll actually come in. I'm a nine on this movie. I really enjoy this one. I will say Megan Fox. It didn't hurt the eyes. No. No, clearly not. I'm sorry. It's my take on the movie. I like Megan Fox in this movie. I'm not a Megan Fox hater. I'm not.
I just don't know that she's appeared in movies that have... i guess benefited her uh those transformer films give me a headache i can't watch those things they i you know i sit there and i watch them like jesus christ i can't even figure out how these things were changing yeah um uh but for me
Even though I liked Megan Fox in this, she's the title character. This is Needy's story. Yeah. Yeah. This is the movie that introduced me to Amanda Seyfried and showed me how talented an actress she really was. Agree. I liked her a lot in this film. And every time I see her in a movie after this, I'm like, I get a little bit excited. Oh, God, it's Amanda Seyfried. You know, she was in, what was it? Manc.
from 2020 which was nominated for best picture she played marion davies uh you know the the mistress of um william randolph hearst in that film and she was great in that movie and every time i see amanda seyfried i'm like oh wow wow that that's her and i think immediately every time i see her even in mank i think of her in jennifer's body i love it and literally bill the only other thing i think of with this movie
is bill fagerbock in that one scene he's in screaming into the air i think he's in it for like two minutes yeah he's not literally like he did yeah yeah have to go down about like 30 people in the cast to even get to him yeah he's one of those actors he's like eugene levy if he's in a and if he's in a scene he steals it well yeah i i think
I don't know if he's quite at the level of Eugene Levy. I think Eugene Levy is like probably 10 times ahead of Bill Feigler. But in the sense of they steal the scene. Yeah. Eugene Levy steals a movie if he's in a single scene. Sure. Uh, but, but Bill Fager back in this movie, he was very memorable. Um, but yeah, for me, the find of this film and, and that's even taking into account. And I didn't know when I first saw it, I didn't know who Karen Kusama was.
I didn't know who Diablo Cody was. It wasn't until a few years later that I saw Juno that Diablo Cody wrote. Or, you know, and years after that, I saw The Invitation, which sort of introduced me. I was like, oh, wow, Karen Kusama. The find of this movie for me was definitely Amanda Seyfried. Yep.
Love that girl, man. Such a talented actress. I get a kick out of her in Mean Girls where she can tell the weather. It's raining. She's like, oh, 30% chance. Really good movie. Jennifer's Body, if you haven't seen it, man. Definitely. uh definitely check it out man it's definitely worth a watch and like i said i'm i'm a nine on it dude i just really and it's grown like i remember first time i seen this years ago i was kind of like
I was lukewarm on it only because I thought it was Jennifer's movie. The first time I saw this, I'm thinking, oh, it's Jennifer's movie, and I'm not connected to Jennifer. I wasn't quite getting there. It wasn't until the second viewing that I said, no, this is Needy's movie. It's Needy's movie but we see Jennifer's body. Well, yeah. You think I'm going to sit here and complain about seeing Megan Fox's body? No, I'm not going to do that. But as far as the characters go,
This is definitely Needy's movie. And I think that once you get to that point, you know, you like it a little bit more. And there were some very talented people behind it. Both, like I said, both the director and the writer. would go on to do other work that was just amazing. Awesome. All right, well, Pearl, thank you for that. So that is three reviews down, and mine will be last, and we got...
A lot more calls to get to, so let's go to our next caller and see what they got for us. Hello, Creepers. This is Anthony, the Shotmaster General, calling at you live from Silk Out. And for my shots, as I am the Charmessage General, I am drinking... What is left over from this bottle of screwball peanut butter whiskey from the last record. And cheers to you all. Peace and love. Peace and love. Cheers.
And really quick, I just want to say thank you for having me on for the next few episodes. And always love being on. Thanks to the callers, especially those who took a shot. And also, screw you people. you for taking god damn you god damn you all it was my fault but anyway self-inflicted it was lots of fun such a blast but we're on school horror school horror and I am a teacher, so I should say that the most horrific thing, the most horrifying thing
thing that you could ever witness in a school ever was probably me last Friday, the day after the recording of the 1992 episode. I went into school. Damn you all. I went into school. And it was horrible. It was horrible. And that is horror. It was real-life horror. The kids loved it because they didn't do anything. But really, nothing happens on a Friday. There's no learning. I'm sorry to break this down, but no learning happens on a Friday at school.
Anyway, I'm getting off topic. I haven't even started it with school horror. School horror. This reminds me of the headlong into, what was the name of it? Headlong into Monsters. There was a curse episode where we were going to do a horror in the hallway, school horror episode. It was Class of Newcomb High, Battle Royale, and Raw. Three great horrors, and I watched them.
And then I watch them again when the episode goes up. It never happened. And I have all these notes. If I'm going to focus on one of those, it's very difficult. But Battle Royale is a Japanese movie. There's a special edition where it's over two hours long, and it's worth every single second of. If you've never seen Battle Royale, it is the Japanese pre-Hunger game. I'm sorry. I'm very sorry. It's the pre-Hunger Gaze because it's a lesser version of the Hunger Gaze.
And I'm laughing at the pre. And it's much more violent. Because it was written. Battle Royale was based off of it. He got cut off. So there's going to be a penalty shot. Let me just say. Ding, ding, ding. Anthony R. mentioned the movie. That is a 10 out of 10 for me that I wish I picked. Oh, really? Battle fucking Royale. It is a masterpiece.
He is right. Now, he said it's the lesser Hunger Games. No, I think he meant to say the Hunger Games is the lesser Battle Royale. Right. And I'm almost convinced that's what he would have said if he wasn't drunk. I'm telling you. Battle Royale, I watched it again just tonight. And this is the fourth time I've seen it. It gets better every goddamn time I see it. It is on my top 250 movies list.
And as much as I love the faculty, and I do, I was saying to myself, why didn't I pick Battle Royale? I absolutely love that movie. It might even be in my top 50. of all time i i it is such an amazing film as if it's not it is now after watching it like for the fourth time it it is a masterpiece and it might not quite fit into horror You know, it might seem more like action. There's gore. I don't know. I think it's pretty horrific. I think it definitely is a horrific film.
And I'm right there with you, Anthony R. And thank you for bringing this up. This is the movie. that as much as i love the faculty i was kicking myself in the ass that i did not pick battle royale and anthony also chose the one that had i been thinking i would have chosen i would have chosen class of newcomb high right Oh, Place of Newcomb High is, is, is, uh, that's, it's my favorite trauma film.
It's just a ball of fun. I like it more than the Toxic Avenger. And I know Toxic Avenger is the one that put Troma on the map. I think Class of Newcomb High is a better movie than Toxic. And I'm not taking anything away from Toxic Avenger. I think it's a lot of fun. me, the best Troma film, and this is going back to when they used to play them on cable TV in the Philadelphia area. These are Jersey films.
And they'd play them in Philadelphia at like 11 o'clock at night. And I remember my friend and I sitting there watching them and watching like Surf Nazis Must Die and all these other ones. But the one that got me was Class of Newcomb High. That's the one I always liked. The other one was Sergeant Kabuki Man.
Well, God, there was a lot of trauma films back then. Jesus Christ. I mean, that's, you know, one of the great things about Lloyd Kaufman is I don't think he saw a piece of celluloid he didn't like. Let's see if Anthony gets another shot. Yeah, let's see what he does. Let's go to it. Hey, I apologize. I've composed myself. I'm more composed now. And I will take a composed shot of screwball peanut butter whiskey for you all. Peace and love, peace and love.
And I was talking about Battle Royale. I was trumpeting Battle Royale as the pre-Hunger Games. It's much better than Hunger Games, and it's much more violent. High schoolers with weapons. And if we're talking about school horror, I feel like Battle Royale really, really hits home. What would happen if you gave high schoolers... weapons and told them that the last person survives or nobody survives. Because there's so much drama. These kids and their drama. The kids...
They love the drama, but if it involves weapons and violence and blood, it's a blood fest. It's a gore fest. It's so good. that you should probably watch it. It's got dreams and flashbacks. It's more of the straightforward as far as the out there Japanese horrors, but it is very crowded. But it also has some other dreamlike elements. And the lady from Kill Bill is in it. And that is all. I'm just going to do that.
Gogo Yabari. Am I still on the phone? Yes, I am. Okay, okay. Good night. I love you all. Peace and love, peace and love. Hugging kisses to you all. Bye-bye. Love Andy R. I love it. He's great. And you know, another thing that this, that Battle Royale has is Takeshi Kitano. He plays the teacher. who was sort of mistreated by this class, and he's the reason they end up in Battle Royale. Takeshi Kitano, he's also known as Beat Takeshi.
Because he was part of a comedy duo in Japan like years earlier. If you think of like Abbott and Costello or you think of Peel, Jordan Peel. and in the comedy troupe that he was in uh Takeshi Katana was a comedian he started out as that and then he became a director of crime films My first experience with him was in the 2003 movie, The Blind Swordman Zatochi, his update of that. I actually saw that in the theater.
And it sort of blew me away and it sent me down this rabbit hole to find a lot of his other films. He plays the teacher in this movie. And not only is he the catalyst, the one who starts off this whole thing, he has some of the funniest scenes in this movie. He really does. When you laugh. in this film you're laughing at Takeshi Kitano you're laughing at his character
especially a scene toward the end. And, you know, in one of the very last scenes in the film, I don't want to get too much into it as a spoiler. But no, Battle Royale is an absolute masterpiece. Just one of the greatest movies ever made. And I wish I had picked it for this episode. And I want to ask Anthony as a fellow teacher. Was Friday drill and kill or was Friday art all afternoon? Because when I feel like crap, it's art all afternoon.
It sounded like it was art all afternoon. Which means Bill throws a bunch of crayons on the ground and says, okay, have at it. I say, draw the person behind you in extreme detail. And then wake me up when you're done. That's right. Just let me know if the principal walks by that I'm still awake. Let's go to our next caller.
Hey, Land of the Creeps, Chris Bartoli, Worcester Mass here. Wanted to say hi to everybody. So, yep. Okay. First and foremost, I've had a few tonight. Just a little bit. I had... I was out with a friend and we had a couple and then I came home, had a couple more. So this might be a little bit crazy. Sometimes I have notes, sometimes I don't.
The only notes I have is three movies I watched in the past life week, but that's okay. Love you guys. So Greg, Dave, Bill, Pearl, just want to say, you know, love you guys. I don't remember if there's a special guest tonight. If there is, love you, man. And if there's not, that love goes to all the callers. So anyways, school time horror, which is great because you know what? Anytime students are being terrorized, it's always fun. So what I did, I just went for my...
I just went for one. I've grown up with love and horror. I just went with 80s flashes. So I watched a few this week, and I just want to talk about them. Okay? Okay. First one I got. pieces. Just a fun ass movie. This goes where you want a chainsaw movie to go. Now, I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre. One of my favorite home movies of all time.
Still, love it. But man, this one goes there. You're seeing arms being taken off. It's crazy, man. What they did. And is it a great movie? No, I love it. But it's fun. And it does take place in a college, so it qualifies. And, you know, you've got some crazy dialogue through this whole thing. Watch this movie and just watch the lines that are being said. It's crazy. And...
You got Bluto. Remember that Popeye movie with Robert Williams? Bluto. He's in this. He's playing like the same part he did in that movie. Put him in a sailor suit. Was it Willard? The custodian guy? It's him. But man, this movie is great. And that last scene, which makes absolutely zero sense, no reason why it should happen, but it's still fun.
I wouldn't want to be that guy. Nobody wants to be the guy that has his balls ripped off by a corpse that's kind of like sewn together. But man, it's a nice, fun way to end this movie. Highly recommend it. Anybody that has not seen pieces, go see it. Okay, another one I got is called Final Exam. I've only seen this one once before.
fabulous great slasher it's the most simplest premise you could ever get in a way but you know what what i loved about it too is that it has character development so the first half of the movie you're following And he got cut off, so we're going to go to his next call. Let's see here. He only got to number four. I know, right? Let's find his next call. You know what? Moment of the night, bringing up Bluto.
Yeah. I know, right? You see that guy in pieces and you're like, oh my God, it's Pluto from Popeye. Here we go with a second call. L-O-T-C, Chris Batoli. Again, let me try to finish my thought now. I was talking about final. I'm going to try to do this in one more call, but we'll see. Okay, final exam. Another really fun slasher, man. And this is the most simplest.
premise you could possibly get even by 80s slasher standards there's not much to this as far as the premise but they they most definitely did give you some character development you get to follow these characters like right through the movie even ones that would be assholes like wild man who's kind of a dick at times it even shows his like human side
Even if it's briefly. And Radish, the kind of nerdy guy, man, when he gets his, I'm like, I felt bad, you know? And, again, the killer in this is absolutely... Zero backstory, nothing. We don't know why he's there. There's no reason why he should be even doing what he's doing. But man, this guy is catching arrows out of the sky instead of being shot at him.
He's pretty strong. Pulling somebody through a convertible while the car's moving and killing them. Pretty cool. But there's like no reason why he's even doing this. So I came up with my own little scenario. It's as basic as you can get. Okay, so here's this guy. He's a little bit tapped in the head anyways. Two years prior to this killing spree, he went to the movies, saw John Carpenter's Halloween, and said, hmm, that looks like fun.
I'm going to do that. And that's pretty much what happened. That's his backstory. Anybody can do that. Okay, so that was my second one. Again, it takes place in the college. My third one, this is one of my favorites, prom night. I absolutely love this movie. One of my favorite, like, 80s flashers that is out there. And just, you know, the first time I saw this was at the Drive-In Theater.
It was either 80 or 81. I don't remember what you are. So I was even 9 or 10 years old. I'm assuming my parents couldn't get a babysitter. So they said, well, we're taking the kids to the drive and maybe they'll fall asleep. It was the second movie of a double feature, and the first one was a movie called Death Ship. I remember Nazis in it, but it was okay. But, man, I'm telling you, Prom Night, this movie, I think, is just awesome.
Jamie Lee Curtis, she did three movies that I know of in 1980. This one's probably my favorite. I mean, although I love The Fog. I love The Fog, so I don't know. Actually, Trevor Chang was good, too. Well, you know what? This is a really good movie that she did. I loved it. And I'm going to put this out there. This is absolutely a slasher movie, for sure. This has some definite giallo inspirations to it.
And I would like, you know. And he got cut off in the military. Holy cow. We got to go to his last call here. Let's go and finish up his call here. Yeah, but yeah. You know what? It's funny how he's saying. Prom Night, my favorite Jamie Lee Curtis movie from 1980, but I like The Fog. And Terror Train's good, too. The Prom Night is one of my three favorite Jamie Lee Curtis movies. I love it. Let's see what he's got left.
Hey, y'all. Okay, Chris Bartoli, last one, I promise. See, this is what happens when I call in on a Saturday night. If this was like a Monday, it would have been concise to the point, blah, blah, but it's Saturday night, so whatever. Okay, so I know who... I was last talking prom night. I don't even know where I left off. Oh, yeah. I was going to put the question out to Ian Urza. Is there a lot of giallo inspirations in this movie? I think so.
But either way, love this movie. And I got to tell you something, man. When this movie ends, it's heartbreaking. It is absolutely heartbreaking. Anybody who has not seen Prom Night... Please go check it out, because I'm not going to spoil nothing on this phone call. But man, it's like, holy shit, it's heavy. Very much. And so... Yeah, as far as like the jello aspects to it, you've got the, well, obviously the black love killer, but you've got the red herrings all over the place.
police procedural and this is probably early in when the slashes were kind of just coming out so i could see where slashes were kind of getting inspiration from jellos or whatever but anyways Love this movie. It's a definite slasher through and through. Love it. Anyways, that's what I got for this show. Thank you all for being patient with my babbling, whatever. And that's it, man. I want to say one thing that last.
The last episode, loved it, man. Not just the love I was getting. It was everything, man. It was fucking perfect. And I want to say Monkeybone, it was awesome hearing from you again because it's been a little bit. And we get the bonus for Mr. Watson. who I fucking love, absolutely. Anyways, you know what? LOTC, you are the family and the best friends that I just haven't met yet in person, and I hope someday I do. So that's it.
So everybody, man, thank you for keeping her alive. Bye. What a great dude, man. Love this dude. Yeah, he's great. yeah he's awesome like i'll be sitting up and watching something on tv and he'll send me something that he's listening to an album or we're talking about sports or chris is just awesome
Absolutely. All right, well, it's time to get to the last feature of you tonight, and that'll be mine. Disclaimer, the reason I chose mine was because I'm in this... asian kick and i'm like dude i'm wanting to do deep dives i'd never seen this movie that i'm gonna pick it's from south korea it's a south korean horror film and i just chose it just because of it being an asian cinema film and i'm like all about that right now and i love it
But the movie I'm going to be choosing is none other than a movie from 2014 called Morning, M-O-U-R. N-I-N-G, morning, not like the morning, but morning grave from 2014. So let's get into it. Director N-Chun Ho. is the director of this film and we got the star of the movie is well let's get into it now here
What I will say is a lot of these movies, for me, it's hard for me to pronounce a lot of names. So if I butcher any names, it's completely by accident. It's not because I'm trying to, but it may come off that way. is played by Kang Hanul. And he has a gift. He has the gift of seeing ghosts. He has...
And you could call it a curse as well. I don't guess necessarily it's a gift. It could be a curse, right, Pearl? But wherever he goes, he sees ghosts. And we find out a little bit later in the movie that his uncle, and it could possibly be a family trade. as well because his uncle has the same ability as well uh but anyways he's at school and he has uh
He's on a train at first, a subway train, and he sees this ghost, and then he's met with some bullies. Now, this kid is met with bullies throughout this whole movie. So much as the director and some of the filmmakers had mentioned that this movie was more a movie about school bullying. So you do get a lot of that in this story.
uh he's he's getting bullied so he calls his uncle up like i want to come back home i'm going to you know live with you and the uncle's like you know two people that can see ghost is not good in the same you know household or whatever and boy basically tells them like I've already told them I'm transferring.
And guess what? I'm coming in because you're living in my parents' house anyways. And that kind of ends it because he don't have his parents no more. So they show up and him and his uncle, you know, they kind of work through things. His uncle is, you know. I don't want to say trained, but he's lived with this a lot longer than clearly Ensu has. So he has, you know, some advice that he will give and his advice is to ignore him. If you ignore him.
they they'll leave you alone but once you start you know letting them know that you see them, then they come to you because you're able to give them something or they're able to get something out of you. And so he's trying to relate to the boy into do not make them known. right don't do that but he can't do that it's just part of his nature so anyway so we get into the school aspect of this he transfers he goes to the school back in his hometown and he's met with bullies once again
You're like, holy crap, dude. What the flying heck? The main bully being Park Hong-ji, played by Han Hai-ren. And she's such an attractive young lady. And you're like, why are you such a bully? But she is. And she's got her... guy friend or whatever, uh, which is her boyfriend who is just a bigger prick than, than she is in this movie. And, uh, it's Lee, Lee high school played by part do chic.
so this little click they got a little click together and they're bullying this boy and uh you know he becomes an outcast immediately once again and he's met by a ghost and this ghost befriends him and it's like really cool little aspect of this movie is this uh ensue being with this girl and uh which is see he played by kim sugan
and i love the aspect of this like he becomes so attached to this girl ghost and she's trying to help him he's trying to help her and uh it becomes this whole aspect but then we know that there is a girl in a mask and you say what's the girl
mask that's the evil spirit in this movie and it kind of revolves around trying to figure out who this is why they're doing what they are and that's kind of the concept of the movie i think the the overall filmmaking is awesome And I really feel that in most... south korean films like they really especially when you get into the grudge the ringu those type ghostly spirited movies they really know how to bring it home and they do it in such a way
way that just really works now this one i don't know the full budget of this one but i will say it does have a few visual effects of the ghost that is terrifying but at the same time it comes off a little bit hokey but it is a terrified moment when you see the
cracked face of a ghost and it's really creepy man it kind of puts you in that grudge moment or the ringu or whatever man they just really get the spirits uh kind of freak you out a little bit but i like the story i really thought hensu plays such a really strong role in this he's the shy bashful you know bullied kid that is trying to help and we find out that there's a little side story and the reason he had left home all along was because of something that happened when he was a kid
And that was with A Young, who was a little girl that was murdered. And he saw it happen. He knew what happened, but he was scared and he didn't say who the killer was. And had he had done that, this guy would have been captured a lot sooner. He did eventually get caught. But there's this great, beautiful moment where he's able to, when he moves back home, he meets her. again and he's able to she's forgiven him basically right pearl he's kind of you know she saw that
It wasn't vindictive on his side, but it's because of fear and different things is why he didn't say nothing. And it's really tormented him through his early years of school life was he really knew he did wrong, but not. saying something so it was really like him hiding from her because he was scared how she would react to him but there was that beautiful moment where they actually
kind of meet each other and she forgives them and then she fades away and it was just an awesome moment. This movie is beautiful, man. It is shot so awesome. I think the cast is awesome. awesome i loved it uh very attractive young people and it's just a really fun movie to watch and i would definitely own this movie i would definitely watch this one again and probably will watch this again and i think when you get into
Asian cinema itself like you get into Hong Kong you get into uh you know Tokyo you get into the Korean films like dude they are so well and I really want you know you guys and gals to really take a chance on them they're not going to be for everybody because some people may not
be able to read a movie or some people don't like to look at subtitles or whatever but just give it a shot man i'm telling you there's a there's a channel called asian crush uh which if you watch this movie you'll see it pop up at the very beginning of the movie asian crush
uh it's such a cool free channel kind of like tubi or kind of like uh pluto or whatever you want to call it and it's all about asian cinema on there whether it's movies tv horror comedy action but man i highly recommend downloading that app and really digging into some of this asian cinema man because they really know what the hell they're doing uh so this one right here it's also known as sunny g godam
literally, which is Girl Ghost Story. And man, I love it. I just really thoroughly enjoy it. And Pearl, I want to go to you because I know you're even more in depth in these type films than I am. And I'm still kind of a, I don't want to say a novice, but I am. in a sense uh so what's your take of mourning grief i agree with everything you said it has beautiful morals beautiful like cinematography it has
The story they always give always have some kind of like deeper meaning. And that's what attracts me to these movies. And I mean, and you also got to give them credit. They do know how to act.
like a ghost or a phantom or something the way they like twist their bodies and do all this kind of stuff pop their eyes out really creep you out but this particular one yeah especially like the one the part that you just spoke of like his kind of redemption part that he got to help someone one that make him like be able to see the little spirit girl that tormented him his whole life for not saying nothing but you know clearly you know as you said she forgave him and she was able to pass on
just everything about it i mean when you watch these films they're so they're really good on vengeance they're really good on telling more than just the backstory. And like I said, that's what has me attracted to these movies. Yeah, absolutely. I think one of the main characters in this one is Sai Hee, played by Kim Soo Hong. She is the one girl that, you know, he kind of, you know, met at the subway at first or at the train station. And then she kind of stays with him and he befriends her.
There are scenes where he is so into this girl, like he's drawing her all the time. He's an artist, so he likes to draw, and he's like drawing her. Well, nobody sees her but him, right?
So there's moments where he's sitting by himself and people looking at him like, you're a fucking dork. Like, who the hell are you, you know? But to him, he's got this relationship with this ghost. And it's just so... cool that she stays with and there's a real cool scene where he's in his room bedroom and he's like drawing her and she's watching him right
So she starts playing this little hide-and-seek game because she'll be on one side of him. He turns and she's not there. And then he gets to that moment where she's hiding in a closet. And he starts undressing. And she's like putting her fingers over her eyes. But then she's peeking. And then he kind of undresses all the way. And you can see her like. getting school girl. I know she's a ghost, but damn it, that was fun. Like, I love this fucking movie. But that's what made it cool because...
She forgot she was dead. She forgot she felt her life back again with this guy. It was just funny because of the fact that obviously she's hiding in a closet. Like, why are you hiding? You're a ghost. I know. You don't need to hide. But the Hun Ji, man, she was such a good bully in this movie. And the back story on her was she had a hard time doing this because she don't normally play these roles and she's not like that in real life. So it's hard for her to really channel into how.
how do I become this, uh, mean spirited bully bitch? Right. And she done really good in this movie, man. I'm telling you her and that damn high tool, uh, but no, the cast is beautiful in this movie, man. I love it. And I,
I need to search it out. I don't know if you can actually purchase this movie. I haven't looked up that far in advance, but I'm definitely going to be trying to buy this if it's available. I'm a nine on this movie. It's a nine out of 10 first time watch, and I can't wait to get more. more in now looked up the director once again of this movie and they have done other stuff and the director in chun oh
But I didn't, of course, know anything by them. So I'm not 100% sure. So they're more of a writer than anything. They've directed... uh or she or he has directed 13 different projects there's a few shorts in here um so crank up is a short so the first directorial movie is this one and then they did a movie called 12 dead red knights chasing which a couple of the cast members in this movie is from that as well uh or
from the movie chasing or in this movie. So, you know, some of them came back nightscape. We'll have very bad moon rising, uh, the DMZ dust angel. Midnight Taxi Madness, and I don't know what this one is, but 2019, Friday the 13th, The Conspiracy Begins. TV movies. There you go. I'm a big fan of it. Bill, did you watch it, and what did you think of it?
Yes, I saw it. I had actually, I didn't realize I had seen it, but it was a couple of years ago and it was probably in a mad rush and I just didn't recall it. But as the movie was playing out, I was like, I know this one. I know this one. I know this one. I agree with you in a sense that I really enjoyed this film. It's shot wonderfully. It's kind of almost like in a dreamlike sense of filmmaking.
It's a good revenge story. I really like the scene where he's sitting by the tree and he's drawing the dog. And the other person, like the girl beside him was like, you know, the dog's up by its foot and really good. I like the scene at the end. Let's just say where things get busy in a barn or bloody in a barn. Yes.
I really like that scene. And, you know, there's a couple scenes where the kid is getting pummeled. You know, I was saying he could have fought back a little bit more. He was just getting kicked in the stomach. kick after kick after kick but yeah it's a good film uh it's one of these ones where if you don't know to look for it you'll probably never find it unless like i found it by pure accident a couple years ago
But it's one that I would seek out. If you're not one that knows a lot of Asian horror, yes, Battle Royale is great. This one is pretty good, too. So check this one out. I think I gave this one an 8 out of 10. And for me, that's pretty damn good. I really liked it. Yeah, I would definitely say, Dave, you need to check this one out. Give it a shot. But like I said, it's more on the, it's definitely a ghost movie. So you got to dig those type movies too.
But it's a ghost story that's got a little bit of action and blood to it. Yeah, there is that one scene for sure, man. A lot of blood. Nice. All right, so let's get to some more voicemails, and then we'll get to our honorable mentions. I do. All right, so let's go to our voicemails here. Let's see who we got here on the collar. Woo-hoo. Yeah, baby.
School's not out yet, Cooper. I'm sorry. Nope, we're back in school. And horror in school. Oh, gosh. Immediately when you mention this subject, I mean, you... My mind went right to, I think the faculty was probably the one that really came to my mind first. And then I started to think deeper about it. And I was thinking of movies that, you know, they're not... I know that it's probably prominently featuring a school or a university or something. But for some reason, my mind was going to...
Even Nightmare on Elm Street, where I know that it's not all out of school, but there are certain sequences in Nightmare on Elm Street. One, two, three, four. five and six in my mind are foggy but I know definitely in one and four and two there's certain sequences that all involve the school so I didn't know if that counted Scream was another one where portions of it are deeply taken at the school. A favorite, Christine, that one has portions at the school.
high-fiving Greg Amortis right now, Halloween 1978 has some very key sequences in the beginning of the movie, you know, while it's setting up the story that takes place at the school. those probably don't count and maybe they do but they all deserve to be mentioned and that's why I just like I had to bring those up some other ones that you know Halloween H2O
is almost entirely at that school. I mean, certainly not all of it, because the beginning, you know, it's showing its travels to California. But, I mean, it's, you know, it's... It's a cool subject. I can't wait to hear some of the other callers in and what the host had to say about school, about university, about, you know.
high schools. I mean, even you have Cooties. If you haven't seen Cooties, it's a decent little zombie movie, you know, or infection. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It takes place. to hear the episode. We'll talk to you guys later. Boom. Greg Bench, cooties. First time mentioned. I love that he mentioned cooties. Such a fun film.
Anybody who hasn't seen this, especially me being a teacher, yeah, this is a wild one. Yeah. I mean, it's a little bit on the comedic side, but still good, especially as a parent. Yeah, it's a good one. Yeah, definitely. Did I hear that correctly? One brief phone call? We'll see. We'll see. You know Greg's sometimes good for another one.
Yeah, I'm sure he'll be driving. Oh, by the way, I thought of this. That's right. Let's go to Victoria. Hey, Samus Groups, Victoria. Calling in for the school horror. This should be interesting. I think we'll hear a lot of different movies listed. I just wanted to list a few movies, quick call in. I guess the obvious ones would be like Prom Nights, Hello Mary Lou Prom Night 2, which I think I liked better than the first one. That was a wild ride. That was a lot of fun, though.
uh screen you know she's she's at the high school quite a bit when she one times she gets attacked is that the school a few others i have listed that i've seen pieces And the One Miss Call trilogy, I think it's trilogy. The all three are there in school. I think the third one, they take a school trip.
but they are still in school. Urban Legend and the second one, Final Cut. This honorable mention for American Psycho 2, I guess technically it's not... school they're in the fbi training but um if you haven't seen that one don't one i saw recently christy where a young woman stays behind for Thanksgiving holiday at her school and this group of, I'm not sure how to describe them, just people, Satanists, I think they are. They're after just...
Like specific people and they label them Christy. Doesn't matter what their real name is. And they murder them horrifically. And she has to fight back. Ones that I haven't seen that I want to see. uh cry wolf uh phenomena um i know i haven't seen it and i know i need to the black coat's daughter but some other ones i have seen black christmas the original
They don't care for any other version. Night of the Creeps, which was the first time I watched last year, which I really enjoyed. Hell Night. And I would say my favorite, Suspiria. I know, girl. I know. Okay. And another good one that's an interesting one is called, it's more of a thriller, but it's called Monument from 2018. I highly recommend that one. That's all. I just want to call and name a few.
I know it's going to hang up on me soon, so I am just going to hang up. Can't wait to hear the episode. I'll talk to you all later. Good call. The one missed call was nice. Well, I'm so glad she brought up Christy. If there's nobody, if there's nobody, what kind of English do I speak? If there's anybody that hasn't seen Christy, it's not one that involves... you know, kids in the hallway or anything like that. This is a girl during, I think it's Thanksgiving break.
and she gets someone who's kind of watching her and stalking her, and she has to run around and get through the university. It's more on the thriller side of horror, but it's a... damn good one. So check out Christie if you haven't seen it. Yeah, it's got a lot of good gore in it. Yeah. Yeah, it's been a couple years. I reviewed it on Phantom Galaxy with Nathan, but it's been a couple years, so it's worth a rewatch. Hell yeah. Let's go to G-Rig. Hey, Creepers.
It's D-Reg, other Greg out of Wilmington, North Kakadalaki, calling in about the school horror episode. And by my clock, I am a little bit after midnight, and I apologize. uh for my tardiness i don't feel tardy but uh all that besides i do want to uh throw in some some names of school horror movies that i really enjoy i mean there are just so many there are so many
So I kind of put in the ones I think that have a good quantity of school in them. As much as I like Nightmare on Elm Street and the body bag being dragged through the hallways, I don't know if I consider it a school horror. But they are school friends. I don't know. Anyway, but these have a lot of school setting. I did want to say Cabin Fever 2. Hello, Mary Lou Prom Night 2. Return to Horror High. Carrie.
And this is like a Hulu Into the Dark original was School Spirit. I kind of like School Spirit. But anyway, if anybody saw that, I dug it. It's on Hulu. So anyway, yeah, can't wait to hear of all everybody else is doing. There's probably going to be some silly ballet school movie. Bill, you know the one. That'll come up. But anyway. Y'all have a great show. Can't wait to listen. Bye. Oh, how do I turn this? Oh, and by the way, that thing with the mirror. Hope you got a kick out of that, Greg.
Yes, I did, G-Rig. Thanks a lot for the pleasure. Is that a Van Halen reference? I don't feel dirty. I don't know. It could have been. Oh, God, love that, dude. What a great call. let's see let's go to our next call all right here we go go bo patterson hey land of the creeps this is bo patterson out of math in ohio and i'm calling about the full horror episode
I'll just start off with a couple that I know everyone's going to say, like Scream 1, 2, and 4 specifically really have a lot of central school elements. Halloween H2O, of course. Love Halloween, so it's got to be on there. And The Faculty, which also stars Josh Hartnett. And then Urban Legend and Christy. Christy's a really good movie, too. That's awesome.
I'm going to go ahead and go in more in depth into maybe Cry Wolf, a PG-13 movie from the early 2000s. I want to say like maybe four or five. I can't really remember. You know, it's got some stars in there like Lindy Booth. He's been in a few things like Dawn of the Dead and all that. Gary Cole, who's been in so many things. I mean, I think right now he's big on Grey's Anatomy. My wife watches that. Or no, Chicago Med, that's what he is. And then...
Of course, Jared Padalecki, who everyone knows who that is by that, you know, Moose. But stories about eight kids in high school. And, you know, they like to play this game where they're trying to figure out, you know, who's the wolf, who's killing everybody. And the secret of the game is to figure out who makes it to the end. If you make it to the end and you're the killer, no one suspects you. You win the game. If you lose...
They figure out, then they win the game and split the pot. But they decide to play it on a larger frail with the whole school by making fake news stories about a local death that just happened and about a killer that no one ever seen until someone takes this.
you know, a little more serious and this killer starts showing up and friends start disappearing. And I'm not going to go too much into detail. I'm not even going to say what it reminds me of. Because if I did that, then it would just give away the story. It would give away the twist, too. So I'm not going to do that. But it's a fun PG-13 movie that, you know, if you haven't watched it, I'd say definitely give it a watch. It's a lot of fun.
But I'm hoping I don't get cut off. If I did, I'll talk to you next time. And see you guys later. Bye. Oh, Bo Patterson. And he must not have got it all out because he called back in. I didn't think he got cut off. Yeah. Let's go to this last call and then we'll go to Dave. We're going to get the...
next episode, and then we'll go back to our last voicemails. Let's go to his last caller. Hey, uh, Land of the Creeps, it's Bo Patterson again. I looked down at my phone and realized I was at like four and a half minutes, so... I'm willing to bet I got cut off somewhere, so I'm just going to go ahead and rehash the last few seconds of what I talked about before. It's Fry Wolf again. Like I said, PG-13, so it's perfect for younger audiences, good gateway for kids.
Especially if you want to get them into a slasher-type scenario, a movie Scream Slasher, without really the blood. Like I said, it's a good watch. I think people will enjoy it. at least one time i've enjoyed i own it so i i remember watching it i was like i don't know 15 when i watch it so it's a good watch for me but there's a nice twist you won't see coming and uh oh
Greg, the main girl, her name is Dodger. You can guess where she got the name from, I'm guessing. That's your team. So, hey, you might like that. Yes. Give it a watch. And I hope you guys are having a good show. Hope all is well. Thanks for all you guys do. I'll talk to you guys next time. Bye. And you daggone right, I like the name Dodger. I love it.
Let's head to Dave. Dave, I want to go ahead and get in our next episode, and then when we get finished, we'll announce it one more time. But let's let the listeners know what the next episode of LOTC is going to be. All right. Next episode, number 423. We're going to do our director spotlight. We're going to pick each one of us. Each host is going to pick a director and we're going to pick a triple feature from that director.
You know, it might be our favorite films from that director. It might be just three films we think would make a great triple feature. As an example, Pearl, I know you already claimed Wes Craven. Yeah. So you will pick three Wes Craven movies that you think will make a great triple feature, either in the theater or at home, you know, wherever you happen to be watching them.
You know, Pearl picked Wes Craven. Each of us are going to pick a single director and pick three movies from their filmography that we think would make an amazing triple feature. And we can't use the same director. No, none of us can pick the same director. So Pearl has claimed Wes Craven. I'll go last. You know, whoever, you know, Greg, you pick next. Then Bill, you pick next.
I will pick whatever director is left after that. And just three, we will all pick a horror director and come up with a triple feature of their movies. whether it is our three favorites of their filmography or three movies that we just think would make a great triple feature. That's going to be the next episode. Well, that works for us then. I was going to say it's not the one I expected it to be, but okay. You're mixing up. I figured it was going to be the yearly one. Right.
No, it's not yet. No, you know what? I kind of did too, but this was a pleasant surprise. There's five weeks in April, so... Oh, you're mixing it up. No, it's just that we needed an extra one, and then it'll be right on schedule where the 93 will fall in the end. Yep. That just means the 93 episode will give me more time to watch more shit. That's right. So there you go. We'll have Dave announce that again at the end of the episode. So about four or five more calls to get to. Let's get to this.
one right here hello creepers hello greg dave and bill um and hello to pearl this is mike stanislowski calling in for the school horror This is a great topic. There's lots to choose from. I'm going to mention three films here that I believe to be somewhat deep cuts. We'll see if anyone else brings them up. But the first would be Horror High from 1974. This movie traumatized me as a child. Not...
So much of the parts are, you know, meant to be scary or the monster, but minor spoiler for this 50-year-old film, there's a scene early on in which the janitor... murders a guinea pig that belongs to one of the students there. It's a live animal and it was incredibly... upsetting for me as a child it gave me nightmares and I don't know if you all have had this experience but for me it was one of those films where I had to turn the channel off and then...
I went back to it a few times because I wanted to see what was happening and I would turn the channel off. I don't know if anyone else ever did that. Anyways, that was my experience with Horror High as a child. The next...
movie I wanted to bring up is Return to Horror High, which is not a sequel and has nothing to do with the 1974 film. It's not trying to be connected like Hello, Mary Lou, Prom Night 2. has a or high in the title but this one is definitely a horror comedy and in the beginning when you see a obvious like fake mannequin leg
covered with paint that's supposed to look like blood, you might think this is going to be just silly and not scary or horrific. But then around the middle of the film, there's a... a story or sequence that involves a biology teacher that's actually pretty dark and creepy. So I recommend that. It kind of plays out like an anthology where...
There's murders that have taken place and then flashbacks and the flashback stories are sort of like anthology segments. It's a fun movie. Recommend it. And then my... final film to bring up is after midnight from 1989 uh this one is and he got cut off so we gotta let's see what is uh after midnight talk is here hello this is mike stanislowski calling back for the school horror episode so the last film that i wanted to discuss is after midnight from 1989
This is a horror anthology film, but the stories actually don't get started until a good way into the movie. This is one of those rare anthologies where the wraparound story is actually... the main focus so it involves a college professor teaching a class in the psychology of fear and his let's say experimental teaching techniques lead to him being censored, and so he winds up holding a class for students in his home in the evening, and that's where the different anthology...
stories are told but uh for me this is an underrated 80s horror anthology film um the stories are okay the wraparound is great and There is a scene in a classroom, which to me is one of the best horror scenes in any classroom-type setting. So highly recommended After Midnight from 1989. So those are the films I wanted to discuss and recommend. I'm eager to hear what other movies people bring up. I'm hoping to get some good recommendations from this episode.
And as always, thanks for keeping horror alive. Kabam! Good call in, Mike. I don't know if I've seen Horror High. I might have. I can't recall. I definitely saw Return to Horror High. Yeah. return to horror i don't know that i've seen the original the return to horror high has been floating around for a while but uh horror high you know it's one of those mid-70s ones that you know i don't know that it ever got a dvd release or anything
Well, yeah, I have it on DVD. Oh, do you? Yeah, but I haven't seen it. Of course you got it on DVD. I misspoke in front of the legend. I love it. Well, we've got three more comments. Let's get to it. Brian Scott sent his in and he goes 80s. Did he go on a really long rant? Oh, he probably went on a whole 90 second one. After school slasher for life. Atari pitfall for life. sent from jack torrance's typewriter itself let's get to brian scott's call hey guys horror movie fanboy here
Calling in for the old Set in Schools episode. That last episode with Anthony R. Was so good. My good buddy there. Man, there were so many 80s slasher movies set in schools. 80s slashers is my jam. I love it. Movies like Slaughter High. Fatal Games, that intro song with the gymnastics scene is badass. Graduation Day, House on Sorority Row, which is really good. I love House on Sorority Row. A really good one-off 80s slasher movie.
Pieces and Cutting Class, which has Brad Pitt in one of his first movies. Or it could be his first movie, Cutting Class from 89, I think it was. And the list goes on and on. And fatal exam from 1990. My good buddy Greg Bozzelli says he's going to drive to St. Louis and beat my ass if I ever mention that one again. So fatal exam there is. But.
May I bring up a 1976 movie that I don't know if anybody else will bring up. I'm doing a deep dive here, Massacre at Central High. Nice. Go watch Massacre at Central High on 2BR Plex right now for free. It goes from a high school bullying movie to a weird slasher movie. It's so odd but just a really good movie. Well, I hope you all have fun recording tonight. Got to get back to playing my NES. Tyson's punch out. It won't not beat itself. L-O-T-C.
for life i love it dude him and i are just such freaking 80s nerds man and you know what is wonderful and sounding great is brian's voice i love his bird in the background I know. I felt like I was at a bird sanctuary. It's been a few episodes. Brian, here's my challenge. Make some noises and some phrases. It might say, Newcomb High or something.
It could. It's funny. I texted him today. Pearl and I was out at Ollie's and Dave knows Ollie's well. And they had this 12, I'd say it's about 12 inch long. Cobra commander from G.I. Joe figure. 12 inch long? No. No schlong. A 12-inch figure. Or if you're across the pond, figure. I'm not the only one with a dirty mind. I know, right? No. But I had to get Cobra Commander, so I sent him a picture of it. I said, look, Brian, what I got. So he just sent me right while he was recording.
He went on and he ordered a Cobra T-shirt. I was like, you bastard, you one-upped me, buddy. But I love Brian, man. Me and him are such nerds, man. This is so awesome. All right, so we got two more calls to get to, so we're going to get to those. So let's go ahead and... Let's see. We'll go to Gary Hill first. Let's go to Gary's. We're going to go to Gary's voicemail. We'll be right back. It's a class system here at CBI, Stevie Boy. Check it out.
There you got your motorheads. Car jocks. All the world's a gasket and a lube job and a pack of luckies. Music of choice. Posi-traction. Overdrive. Classic rock. Skinner. The almonds. Bruce. Drug of choice. Beer. Milligenuine draft. Teggers can't be choosers. Freaks and freaks leaks.

And you got kids like me and UV here. Lames who like a metal heavy. Marlboro slight. Music of choice. Carbister of sorrow. Language of the mad. Drug of choice.
What do you got? Freaks all week. Hey, Land of the Creeps Horror Podcast. This is Gary. Just checking in on your... whore in schools um thing schools universities um avenues of learning if you will um i don't want to use a school teacher what's up bill my lover of trash And he knows all too much about the whores of school, you know, gum under the seat, children acting like assholes, you know.
All the bad stuff. But that's not what this is about. This is about horror films set in school form. And this is a hard five for me to break down. There's a lot of criteria to deal with, especially... The different types of horrors and, like, you pick horror comedies and lots of things didn't make the cut, including a horror comedy that... At the time of this thing, I'm looking at lists, and it just... I want to make it so bad, so I'll mention my honorable mentions.
Number one on everybody's list, I think, should be Carrie. It's based in a high school. Lots of the bad stuff happened in the high school. Minus Piper Laurie, of course. Prom scene, iconic. Yeah, just Carrie all around, man. And, of course, has Pearl's man candy, John Travolta in it, you know. Do it, do it all night long, John Travolta. But Carrie, Brian De Palma, classic on the Stephen King tale. And, you know, everybody should watch Carrie if you haven't watched it. I have it on.
multiple formats, but yeah, go check out Carrie, the original, although I don't hate the sequel or any of its iterations. I think they're all... good on their own merits. The Chloe Grace Moretz one and the Angela Bettis TV version. I think they all are all good on their own merits. These are in no particular order, by the way. Distribbing behavior. Distribbing behavior is a film about teens.
who get implants and it causes them to be good kids and not our students but the downside is when they get horny they fucking lose their shit and they uh start getting violent and something wrong with their brains and um it's it's it's a it's a wild concept it's mostly based on and i think it is i'm not sure this is confirmed or denied there's a film called strange behavior Or Dead Kids, it's called, a Canadian film from the early 80s. It has Louise Fletcher and Day Young, my babe, my...
Like Kate Rambeau from Rock Roll High School is in that movie. And it's kind of like that movie, but I think the certain behavior takes it a step further, especially with the violence. They show the violence on screen. And got a bunch of pretty kids in it that you may know. And that's a concept in the 90s. You got a bunch of pretty kids from TV to be in their movie.
And I think this sort of behavior sticks out amongst the post-scream slasher stuff, horror stuff, you know, amongst all that stuff. And that's a big question I had is... A lot of the real good stuff came out later in the 90s and the aughts and a lot of more abundance of teen stuff. This is what makes this so hard. So that's the one I'm going to leave in that era because I think it deserves to be told to say, hey, there's other films like Urban Legend, which I think that's good.
My problem is it's a good slasher, but it definitely doesn't lean into the urban legend of it all. You kind of wish it took place that this film was made in the 80s because it would get a lot more campy with the urban legend stuff. That's probably a little flaw with Urban Legend. So I'm going to leave Urban Legend alone and move on to my next choice. Controversial statement, but I believe it is. like a slasher in a way a spree killer film not going to be on anybody's list probably but uh
Heathers, I think, is that in so many ways and, you know, disgusts those people. I mean, you have a newfound couple who's literally... offing their friends by accident or by design, you know, and eventually get into it. I mean, once they do it all the way, Christian Slater, Winona Ryder. And the other one kind of goes with it until it gets too out of control, and then they literally blow up to school. And it's an anarchist film.
a sanely well written film i mean fuck me gently with a chainsaw it's it's um it's it's teen it's teen satire at its finest So I have to include Heathers in this horror school thing, although traditionally it would not be there, but it should be discussed in the genre. of horror in schools because um yeah again discuss discuss it please I'm curious of your opinion on this
It's like the folks that say Terminator is not a slasher. It kind of is in a lot of ways. It has all the elements in there. Horror in school, horror in school. There's a lot of it. You know what? I said I was going to stick to one, but it's so brilliantly done. I'm going to add another one to the mix. The faculty. As much as I effing hate Cleo Duvall's guts as an actress.
She's part of this ensemble that works oh so well in this Robert Rodriguez film written by Kevin Williamson. Just wild all around and is ridiculous at the end. As you start seeing this before, it just turns into a crazy monster thing. And I happen to love the faculty. And it took a while for me to love the faculty because the trailer kind of fooled me. I dig it, man. I dig it a lot. So I'll leave the faculty at that. And this is number five, I think. Number five would be...
I'm literally going through lists as I'm doing this right now because it's so hard to break this down. I'm going to pick Wacko. Wacko deserves your love. This is a Graydon Clark movie. Which is the guy that made Satan's Cheerleaders and joysticks and black shampoo. This is his spoof on the horror genre. And this is about a guy who wears a pumpkin head that murders teens.
And it's got the guy from Joysticks in it. Very young Andrew Dice Clay is in it. George Kennedy plays the detective who's weird and, you know. If you haven't seen Wacko, I highly recommend you check it out. It just takes all these... These high school tropes and these horror movie tropes, it puts a bunch of freaking 20-somethings in it. They're obviously not teenagers, and I recommend you watch it. There's lots of, again, it's nearly out of five.
It was hard to narrow it down to five, but the craft deserves your love. I don't know about that. The craft deserves your love. So many of these things, man. Once Bitten is a great horror comedy that takes place around a high school, but I wouldn't call it in a high school. What else is in this mix? The first scary movie, I would say, fits in real well in the high school vibe.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, if you want to go there. It's one of my favorite things in the world, but I call it more of a comedy, but some people would subject to that. Puberty in high school. And a werewolf. Go with Ginger Snaps all day long. I just. Yeah. I can go for days out of this. I pick Slaughter High. But it gets a little silly.
Let's put it that way. But this is where I'll leave it. Again, lots of great options. There is really no wrong answer here is my issue. So this has been me talking about high school horror. And I'm looking forward to hearing your guys' thoughts. The Heather's thing, I'm looking forward to hearing your guys' thoughts on that. And, you know, if you agree or disagree, a lot of the elements are there, especially people who are into, like...
true crime stuff and spree killers. That film could have went a lot further if it wasn't like a comedy and it wasn't going for satire, which is Michael Lehman. is the director, and he's very about that. Love, love, love this genre, this sub-genre of films, but I'm going to leave it at that. Thanks again to Land of the Creeps.
I don't know who your co-host is on this, but hello to that person. Bill, Pearl, Dave, and Greg, of course. Thanks again for caring about your people so much. It means a lot to a big guy like me. And don't be a bully. Kick them in the shins. I'll see them in Pearl all day long. And thanks again for keeping whore alive. Bye-bye now.
All right, so there is Gary's message, and I love Gary. What did you think of it, Dave, man? I'm telling you, man. I love it, especially since he picked the faculty. I know. And the Carrie. Here's the thing with Carrie. It's kind of hit and miss for me. I love the original. I didn't dislike... What's the one with Chloe? Moretz. Very small. Moretz, yeah.
I didn't mind that one. I thought that was okay. I still need to see that one. I've never seen that one. You know what? I haven't either, though. Oh, okay. So, Greg, is it worth watching? Yeah, it's actually a decent movie. I mean, it's basically, I don't want to say scene for scene.
But, I mean, if you've seen the original, you've seen this one. So it's a rehash of the main idea. I like Carrie Part II, The Rage. Yeah, you're a big fan of The Rage. I love that one. And Amy Irving comes back in her... Yeah. But didn't they redo it a couple years back too? There's a couple.
different remakes of it. I think they remade number two. There's three of them. Yeah, so there's a few of them out there. Disturbing Behavior, I really wanted to get to and just ended up not pulling the trigger. It was actually one I was going to choose just because I don't think I'd ever seen it. So the question was about Heathers, too. Would we consider that Heather? I don't know Heathers. I don't know that. You know what? I am absolutely with him.
I was listening to a podcast and it, oh God, it was the pure cinema podcast. They were talking to the writer of Heathers. He was absolutely influenced by horror films. So I am with him 100% Gary Hill. You are right. Heathers is... at least influenced by horror films. I think it would be what Jay Piles used to call social horror. I think it kind of fits into that envelope a little bit.
Interesting. Pearl, you've seen it a lot of times. What do you think? I think it does have horror elements because it's dark, it's psychological, you know, there's a death count, you know, so yeah. Yeah. Okay. I'm with you. I'm with you, Gary Hill. 100%. And Gary, I completely agree. Ginger snaps. Good one. I'll always support my Canadian horror. And yes, Gary, I do know that kids can be assholes and I proudly love.
trash films you and me buddy we'll talk about it soon yeah now i will say imdb has its dark comedy satire serial killer teen drama comedy crime does i say horror But we need to see it. I'm telling you, I'm with you 100%, Gary Hill. I think Heather's is right there as a horror film. At least something that is horror adjacent. Yeah, it's one of those ones that if they took the next step further, it's definitely a horror.
You know, like they always kind of cut short a little bit, but the themes and the, you know, the plot line. Yeah, I can see it. I'm not going to get mad at somebody that says it. Nice. You mentioned the crap. Yeah. Which I just finished watching. Yes, you did. And I love the craft. It's definitely all about school horror. Are they redoing the craft? They did already.
Oh, did they already? Yeah. Oh, I missed it. It wasn't... Yeah. Not so good? Not the greatest. It's okay. What about Gateway to Horror Once Bitten? Is that the one with Jim Carrey? Yes. It's funny. I love that movie. gateway horror for kids yeah they'll see it it's got vampires once bitten twice shy baby differently that is horror uh all right so all right gary thank you for calling in brother uh so we got one last voicemail that's our
uh, gruesome to some sales, Greg P and Amy Lee. Let's go to their voicemail. Yeah, you can say that all you want. I think you should do Alice Cooper for intro or outro. I know. School's out for summer. I don't know, every time we've talked about this. That's what goes through my head. I'm quite sure. Okay. It's always kind of cool. I may have that, so we'll see. All right. So this is your gruesome twosome coming to you for the school horror episode.
We watched, well, we watched film and a half, I guess. Well, my very first thought, other than Dallas Cooper running through my head, was Summer School, which is completely not a horror movie. Right. But it has that one horror scene where the kid's in the class. Yeah, I believe when I told you, that was the first thing that came to mind. I loved that movie when I was a kid. Well, it's a good movie. So, summer school.
I think it's 87, somewhere in there. Mark Harmon. Mark Harmon. Kirstie Alley is in it. Oh, I forgot she was in it. Yeah. It is a Carl Reiner film. He was a movie producer, Rob Reiner's dad. The comedian did a lot of different things that way. Danny Elfin did the music. Of course he did. And where this all fits in for us is, well, there are two characters in there that are in love with horror films. Got one chainsaw.
One of them is named Chainsaw, and yes, and they end up showing the class, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Apparently, you know, Mark Herman's supposed to be going to Hawaii with his girlfriend. on vacation, and he gets wrangled into doing this summer school, and then he's not the best teacher. He bonds with the kids. He's kind of a fun teacher. Yeah, well, over time he was, so the kids end up learning.
So, anyhow. Sorry, totally not horror related. Yeah, but it has an horror element, even though it is a comedy full on, so. The movie we did watch was Gender Snaps, which I know I showed it to you years ago, but I'm sure you couldn't remember. Of course, I don't remember. I remember watching it the other day, though.
Thank goodness, because here we are recording, and I was worried about that. I was like, should I go a week and not record? Was it a week ago? Yeah, it was a week. Oh. Last weekend, I believe. Ginger snaps. Huh? Snap. Snap. Ginger snaps. Catherine Isabel, you know, American Mary. She's been in so many things. Freddy vs. Jason.
I think the last thing we saw her in was the Sabrina Teenage Witch show that was on Netflix. She was one of the teachers towards the end. It was in a school. School for witches kind of things. It also had Emily Perkins and Mimi Rogers, Emily Perkins. She played young Beverly Marsh in the miniseries About It, the one from 1990. She was the other sister. And then mom was Mimi Rogers.
All of them have ties to horror. It was a good movie. It was a very good movie. Interesting, as I was doing a little research, Catherine Isabel and Emily Perkins both were on Supernatural and The X-Files at some point. not together but they were both yes on there like criminal minds like every single person under the sun has been on an episode at some point you know what that's probably you're probably definitely not wrong there
So anyhow, Ginger gets bit by a werewolf and things happening in the school. And, you know, they keep trying to send Ginger to the counselor. And she just continues to wolf out. And eventually they... They killed the school janitor and stuff like that. So it's definitely a school horror film. I don't know. Did you have any other big thoughts on this movie? No.
But you did like it, right? Yeah, it was a good movie. It's one of my favorites. It's better than I expected it to be. I think I say that a lot. Well, I believe you do. But it definitely falls into my top ten of werewolf movies. And I just really... really enjoy i don't know that i expected it to be a werewolf really based on the name oh okay i don't know what i really expected
That's true. And then the movie that I showed you clips of, this is after I watched it, is 1957's I Was a Teenage Werewolf, starring Michael Landon. which most people would know from, like, Little House on the Prairie, probably our age. But before that, he was Little Joe on Bonanza, and I watched all of those in syndication. And then you brought up Highway to Heaven. He did a lot of...
It was like the first time I'd seen him like young. True. This also had Whit Bissell, which he played the mad scientist. He was in a lot of the 50s sci-fi horror films. Creature from Black Lagoon and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. His name is Whit Bissell. You wouldn't know him, but he's a character actor. Because I'm like, did I just have a stroke? I have no idea what he just said. No, you did not have a stroke. You know, unless you're...
a hardcore pre-70s kind of horror fan, you're not really going to know the name either. Which totally reminded me of Teen Wolf. Yes, and, you know, Teen Wolf is definitely a better film, and that was also done in the schools. I Was a Teenage Werewolf was the first time there was a horror film in a school or a monster in a school. Michael Landon, I believe he plays Tony. He has anger issues. The mad scientist gives him something and hypnotizes him trying to get him to...
revert back to his primal man, I guess you'd say. A little too far back. Well, apparently it turned him into a werewolf. And every time he heard the bell ring, it turned into the werewolf and killed people. And it ends with him getting shot to death.
That's how the movie ends. Like I said, I showed you bits and clips. Clips and pieces because after I watched it, I realized, there's no way you're going to sit through this. Even though it was only just slightly over an hour long, but I was just like... It's not as good as I remember it, but, you know, when you see stuff when you're a little kid, it's very different than... Still slightly outside of my attention span. True. So, the first movie, the, like, actual...
movie movie in a school that came to mind after the ones we've already talked about was The Faculty. I love The Faculty. The Faculty is a great film. Sorry, I know. I just randomly threw you off. No, no, no. You didn't throw me off. The Faculty. was filmed in 1998, or came out in 1998. It is a Robert Rodriguez film, and it was filmed in Austin, Texas.
It stars like an all-star cast. Holy cow. I think most, you know, the lead character, Josh Hartnett, and then you have Famke Jansen. But, I mean... The list of the high school students, Jordana Brewster, Laura Harris, Elijah Wood. I'm trying to think who else was in that group. Did I say Jordana Brewster? Yeah. Okay, so I said her again. So, you know, from Fast and Furious and other things.
She was in... Oh, she was in that Hard Eyes movie. She was in the Hard Eyes movie that we saw. She was one of the detectives in it. Oh, yeah, she was. Still needs a brownie. Yeah, she does. This had... Robert Patrick, Laurie, you know, Carrie's mom, Jon Stewart, like the list just goes on and on. You know, it's basically where aliens take over the school and you have to snort drugs to not be an alien. Exactly.
It was good. Pouring salt on a snail. Yeah, pouring salt on a snail. I can't speak tonight. See, this is what happens when we record it. All right. Late. Go ahead. What's up next? So, I like Happy Death Day, of course. Yep. You know what? horror but i mean it is it's a horror comedy i mean she dies every day and there's a killer after with a baby face and then she has to die every day but i do very much it falls into that horror comedy just light-hearted and
What was the other movie you brought up? Freaky, you know, with Vince Vaughn. That was also a good one from those. See, like, the more you talk about it, the more those movies, like... Oh, and there's that. Exactly. I mean, this could go on and on. My brain goes down a rabbit hole. Well, that's just part of what this is. And we did catch part of prom night the other night when it was on with Jamie Lee Curtis.
Got reminded of why disco is banned. Horrible dancing. I know Greg and Pearl love disco, but the rest of the world does not. I'm sorry. You know, sometimes you just got to play some disco at work and like... have a moment i'm just very very rare i'm just messing with them i there are times when i have to listen to disco at work like you say you know and sometimes you just need a break from everything else absolutely
But I can honestly say I did not appreciate disco probably until about 20 years ago when I had to work with people that played it continuously. But when I was a kid, I absolutely... Other than the one Kiss song or maybe one or two other songs, I was not a fan. I don't remember listening to it. Unfortunately, I knew all the songs because it's all they played on the radio. There you go.
So any other honorable mentions that you think of? Well, of course, Carrie. I mean, that's not an honorable mention. That is just like... Well, that's just straight up. That's probably... Would that be the greatest school film ever made? School horror film? I'm thinking it might. I don't know. I would think it would be. That's just my opinion. I mean, it's like the perfect horror film set in a school. It's just held up so well over time. That is true.
They've made remakes and continuations, but it's not the original. It's not. No, it's definitely not. If you want to sit down and watch a movie, you're going to watch the original. And there are some remakes I like better than originals, but not that one. I agree. All right. Yeah, anything else? Did you have lists that I didn't because we just talked about all the stuff online? No, we talked about them. All right, with that, I'm going to say good night. Good night, guys. Good night.
good music even though we heard it twice i think the music's pretty amazing yes yeah and he started off with that cover of uh pink floyd's uh another brick on the wall part two you know we don't need no education and god damn it let me just say that pink floyd's the wall is my all-time favorite album And I love Another Brick in the Wall Part 1 and Another Brick in the Wall Part 3 as much as I love Another Brick in the Wall Part 2. Part 3 is the one that ends it, right? Yeah.
I don't need no arms around me. Yes, yes. I love that they brought up summer school. yeah oh god yes i love that movie too you know what yeah shoot yeah i love i love summer school as well i think it's a great movie and yes it is horror adjacent yeah Because they do sort of recapture those images from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But even if they didn't...
I love summer school. When that old lady supply teacher is in there, she doesn't know what the fuck she's getting. My favorite line from that movie is. When, you know, what was it? Courtney Thorne Smith's character got like an 87. uh on her on her final exam and they said oh was that the highest score no the guy who was in the bathroom for eight months got a 93.5 No, I absolutely love that movie. That scene where she's going to take her top off?
Oh, God, yes. And then the girl comes over and goes, hey, girl, this ain't the beach. This ain't the French Riviera. You can't do that. And then they're like, oh, that was cruel. You can see the blonde guy. Yeah. You got to love ginger snaps. I love the fact that they brought up I was a teenage werewolf. good movie because i remember seeing that with michael landon my dad showed that to me years and years and years ago he goes bill this is the guy on
Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven. You know, it's low budget. It's meant for a drive-in in the 1950s. Low budget. It was almost no budget. Yeah. But not a bad film. Yeah. And you got to love disco, boys. You know what my note on that was? I don't like disco. Greg, I agree with you. Hey. Both of you can be wrong all you want. Disco rocks. Ain't nothing wrong with disco. You know what? As someone who grew up in the 70s, I liked disco until it sucked.
Disco's the greatest. It brought John Tarota, and without John Tarota, there'd be no Billy Nolan. So Furl's just tying it all in. Without Disco, there'd be no horror. Right? I mean, you got Love at First Bite, have disco, and you love the nightlife. Love at First Bite. You just like it because Kiss went that way. You're damn right. Dynasty.
Probably one of the greatest albums ever. I had the Dynasty album. Hell yeah. You know what? My favorite song on that album is their cover of the Rolling Stones' 2000 Man. I'm a 2,000 man. Well, you know what's funny is they lost half their audience, but then they gained it half back. It's all right. They lost more than half their audience. They lost like 80% of their audience. I said it.
been for i was made for loving you i would have not known who kiss was so bam boom papa papa i love me some disco baby so so when gene is shaking his hips and looking right in your eyes you're smiling damn right dude i'm smiling right at his money hungry ass You were probably one of the six people that bought tickets for his tour. Sure. No, I didn't, but I couldn't afford it. But anyway, so that's all the calls we have for tonight. If any more come in, we'll try to squeeze them in.
Great episode so far. I do want to go to this rating thing right here that I wanted to give, and then we'll do some honorable mentions as we close out tonight. Screen Rants. And sometimes Screen Rant's right. Most of the time they're wrong. But they did a top 10 scariest horror movie set in schools, according to Ranker. And this is where they get together and they throw out a poll and they vote.
This is what was come up with. So I want to throw it at you guys and see what y'all think. I'm thinking this is in order by 10 to 1, I'm assuming, but we'll see. But anyways, I'll just throw the names out. So we got Ginger Snaps from 2000. Yep. Nice movies. Agreed. Halloween H20, 20 years later from 1998. Great movie. Great movie. Next one is Urban Legend from 1998.
I like that. I do. I enjoy that film. I think I might have put it at number 10 behind the other two movies mentioned. But yeah, I like Urban Legend. The Craft from 1996. Yep. Yep. Good movie. Black Christmas from 1974. And yes, Gilman Joel, do not write them and cuss them out for not having that as their number one movie. But I'm just saying. Jesus Christ, is that really number six? Yes. I think the thing holding it back is not as much of it is set at the school.
well they're at a well they're at the dorm yeah but like you don't see a classroom and that's kind of what oh come on that fucking fellatio scene don't get me wrong black christmas is in my top 10 all-time movies it's amazing yeah like it's fantastic the social uh implementation of things and yeah yeah but like when you think of school And that's, I think, what pulls it down a little. Well, let's see what's ahead. Let's see what's five to one ahead of that. Here we go. 1998, The Faculty. Okay.
Just because I picked that movie. That's right. How about 1997 Scream 2? Oh, yeah. Scream 2? Oh, okay, yeah. That's the one where Jerry O'Connell sings. Jerry O'Connell sings. God, Jerry O'Connell sings. That's what you take away from that. Yeah, right. How about 2000's Final Destination? Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I had that on my, if nobody mentioned it, I was going to bring up. The class trip, yeah. All right. And then they have 1976's Carrie. Can't argue. Probably one of the scarier of the films I mentioned. And if you're ready, here was their last one on the list. I'm assuming this is their number one. 1984 Nightmare on Elm Street. Yay.
We haven't been in the first. Yeah, I'm not with that. I think Harry might be ahead of that one. So, yeah, I don't know about your ranking, nerd ranker. And you know what? I'm a big fan of Nightmare on Elm Street. I really am. But I don't look at that as... I don't know. I think Carrie and I think Scream are more school-oriented than Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm surprised they didn't have Bill's favorite movie, Suspiria. I know they should have. Yeah. That's fine.
Suspiria. Oh, Suspiria. I'll fuck off. Bill can be wrong all he likes. It's all right. It's all right. But that was their rankings. I just wanted to throw that out there. what we'll do is we'll do some wrap-ups here we'll go ahead and do some honorable mentions that we might have or want to throw out that maybe haven't been mentioned and then we'll do closing but before that let's go to dave one more time
Dr. Schott, Dave Becker, what is the next episode of LOTC? Because everybody thinks it's 1993 horror, but it's not. No, it is episode 423. We are going to each one of us pick a director. a notorious horror director and pick three films from their filmography that we think would make an amazing double feature. And you know what?
Pearl, you already picked Wes Craven. Do you have your triple feature picked? I only have one. Oh, okay. All right. No, I'm not going to put you on the spot. But anyway, we're going to pick one director each. And Pearl's already picked Wes Craven. And I will go last. I'll let all my other co-hosts pick a director. And we're going to pick three films, whether it's our three favorite films from that director.
Or like one of our favorite films and two others we think would make a great triple feature. We're just programming. We're picking a director and programming their three films that we think would make a great triple feature. There you go. So that is the next episode. It's going to be exciting. And we cannot pick. films from the same director so no no pearl will only have west craven so west craven is off the table yep
So let's head over to you, Dave. What do you got in honorable mentions or final thoughts for this episode? All right. Well, you know, the movie that I really wanted to talk about, Battle Royale, was brought up by Anthony R. And I thank you, sir, for bringing that movie up. Other honorable mentions. We talked about it sort of before we recorded the episode boarding school.
Yes, yes, yes, yes. From 2017, I want to say it was. Around that. Yeah. When I came up with My, My, My Monsters, which is centered around a school. Those are the ones I have, really. But the one for me is really Battle Royale. I just think that movie is an absolute masterpiece. I love it. Cool. Well, what you got in final thoughts, brother, as far as the outros? My outros are the same as they've always been. DVDinfatuation.com, my blog. This is the night before my...
Review number 2,993 is going to post. Wow. Which is a horror film. As a matter of fact, it's a horror film from the 2020s. Oh. So go check it out by the time this episode posts. It will still be the most recent review on my blog. Go out and check it out. My DVD infatuation podcast over on Considering the Cinema.
That's still going strong. We haven't had a new episode in a while. The weekly watch list on Considering the Cinema with Jay and Mac and myself where we just talked about movies we've been watching.
uh we have a new one we're going to be recording uh but my god we've got to have at least seven or eight of them in the can already i don't even know what the next one's going to post i don't even know what the hell we talked about but um And, of course, you had the dad's new horror movies with Greg and Joel and Mr. Watson and Dave Z and so many great hosts.
over there jay and and spawn and mac and and uh kyle and uh definitely check that out as well hell yeah love and appreciate dave for sure so definitely uh go over to DVD Infatuation website. That's DVDinfatuation.com. Go check out his blog spot, man. I would recommend it, man. Some good shit over there, dude, for sure. And I don't say shit. I say good stuff because the movies are his reviews, man. So check them out.
So let's head over to you, Bill. What you got in your final outros here, buddy? In my final outros, I have about six or seven that I just thought of as we were going that I came up. The first one was The Dorm That Drip Blood. is one that i you could have chosen uh there's one that i saw a while back that i was gonna choose when i instead i chose detention and there's one that's it's a cheesy but it's kind of fun it's detention of the dead
Check that one out. Okay. Hell High from 1987. Anybody that knows their 80s slashers knows Hell High. Death Bell. Asian. I don't know if Greg or Pearl, if you guys have seen Death Bell. But if you haven't, it's worth watching. One I was going to choose, but I wanted one I hadn't seen, was Cherry Falls.
I thought that was a good film. Yeah, that was actually on my list to mention too. You're right. That's the one I wanted to check back out. I hadn't seen it in a long time. Yeah, that's the one about all the virgins and all that. Another one was the one from a couple years ago. years ago spontaneous the one where they would blow up uh that one and once it's horror adjacent and it's teaching adjacent
But I thought it was worth mentioning because the main character is a teacher is Wake in Fright. If you haven't seen Wake in Fright with Donald Pleasance. from 1971, the Aussie film. It has nothing to do with school except he's a teacher. And, you know, it's borderline horror, but my God, with Jack Thompson, what a good film that one is. John Million.
fantastic no so that's about it now my big announcement for those listening if you've made it through this long of the episode i will be coming up with my own podcast it's going to be called Music, movies, sports, and stuff.
And I couldn't tell you exactly when it's going to be coming out, maybe in the next week, maybe in the next two weeks. But it's going to be four segments, one where I talk about music, one where I talk about movies, one where I talk about sports, and then stuff, which is my catch-all of whatever's off. the top of my head so there'll be about i'm going to say about an hour and a half that range so it's not going to be nearly as long as land of the creeps but
Trust me, boys and girls, I am not going anywhere. I would never leave this community. It's just something I do in my spare time after I watch the movies for Land of the Creeps. So look for that on your podcatchers sometime soon. As far as everything else, I'd say I've got a couple episodes on other podcasts kind of brewing right now. But everybody, let's just enjoy ourselves. Let's enjoy the warm weather as I got fucking hail and snow yesterday.
It's not going to go away here. Anyways, I know there's a lot of turmoil in the world. Let's be happy with each other. Let's recognize the faults and strengths of everybody. Let's be good people. Elbows up. Let's keep horror alive. Boom. There you go. Check all these out. Check the podcast out. Check them out. Best of luck to you, Bill. Thank you. Best of luck with that new podcast.
And you know what? You're editing it yourself. Yep. So you're a better man than I, Gungadin, because I cannot edit anything. Having said that... I'm learning how to edit. So if there's a few gaps, burps or farts, don't worry about it. It's just part of the process. It's part of the process. Yeah. And you know what? By the time you get to episode 10, you'll be a master at it. I'll be a master at something.
Well, you may be a master debater, but I'm a cunning linguist. I don't know what's better. Thank you, Austin Powers. you go all right pearl let's go to you what you got for final uh movies and outros i'll quickly throw out pretty much some known and some that i forgot of course the stranger things series fear street series the omen to sometimes they come back black phone even american haunting lady in white
Village of the Dam. And the one that kind of got to me because I've been waiting to see this movie forever. And it finally came out on Tubi and it's called Megan is Missing. Oh, yeah. That's when everybody's like, oh, you can't miss that. You know what, though, Pearl? The two that you mentioned that I really got to get behind are Omen 2 and Village of the Damned.
Because both of them are like school related, especially Omen 2. Yeah. Wow. That is a great mention. I love that. I absolutely love Omen 2. I know a lot of people might be lukewarm on it, but I think Omen 2, you know what? Fuck it. I'm going to say it's the second best in the series after the original Omen. I think Omen 2 is the second best. I do too. And I'm assuming for Village of the Damned, you mean the original? Yeah, with George Sanders.
Yeah, I love the original. The remake was okay, too. The only reason I like the remake is Christopher Reeve. You know, because it's John Carpenter. I don't think that John Carpenter can make a bad movie. Oh, yes, he can. The Ward. And The Ward. You know what? The Ward is not a bad movie. It's just a movie made by someone who didn't realize that... that identity was a film before it. Wolf. No, the, the word is not a terrible movie. Uh, ghost of Mars.
is a terrible movie. And I got two more. Okay. One, this is a TV episode and it's from Amazing Stories. It's called Head of the Class. Cool. And I think it's fun for everyone to watch this one. It's a little horror related and some comedy fun, but it has Christopher Lloyd as the headmaster teacher. Oh, yeah.
He loses his head in this one, let's just say. It's a fun one. It's a fun one. Yeah. And the last one I'm going to point out is School Tales series on Netflix. I continuously keep championing this. series and i've obviously i watched it like about three times already front to end this has a lot of horror for for it the series being as it is and it's uh asian has english subtitles but you will not be disappointed nice
And I mean, as well, Charles, I mean, everyone knows where I am. I mean, if you leave a trail candy, you know, I'm going to follow it. Yeah. Wasn't there a TV series with Howard Hessman? called Head of the Class. Yes. That was a great show, by the way. It was. I loved that show. Yeah, I did too. I kind of liked that show a lot. And Howard Hessman and eventually Billy Connolly.
right yeah oh and and this has been bugging me sorry to cut you off pearl but what was the high school one where whenever they killed somebody there was like a death count And they would tell you how many people have been killed and it would be like a little bell would ring. Which one was that one? I kind of want to say...
There's like an 80s slasher, early 80s. Oh, God, I know which one you mean now. Yeah, I can't remember it off the top of my head. Somebody out there listening is going, Bill, it's... Anyways, somebody put it in the room. I know, right? I'm anywhere Greg Amortis is at and in the main LTC group page. That's right. Follow her. Messenger. She's there. All right. So for me, I'm going to throw out Robert DeVille's 1982 Girls Night Out. Everybody knows I champion that movie every time I can.
Because I love that movie. 1995. This is Abel Ferrara and it's The Addiction. That's one. Is that really a school movie? It is, yes. She's actually in school. Holy shit. She's a vampire. Wasn't in college? Yep. So it takes place in class.
They literally have hall rooms and different things going on. Oh, wow. That's an amazing movie. That's probably one of April Ferreira's top films. Yeah, I definitely recommend checking that one out. It's a bit of a... not one that's a fast-paced film no it's it's black and white and uh it's just an interesting film arrow video put out a blu-ray i think i'm gonna end up picking it up when they go on a 50 sale again uh so we'll we'll see about that uh
2004's Matthew Hastings decoys. I don't think that is just such a cool alien. Weird, you know, two male students vying for their virginity. Suspect the woman on campus is not human. Spoiler, she's not. It's just a goofy movie, man. I love it, man. It's a lot of fun. And then, let's see, I've got 1981. You've got to like this one as a slasher movie. You've got to love Graduation Day. I mean, hello. Oh, wow. Yeah, throw that one out. That's a trauma film, isn't it? It is. Yep.
Yeah, I love that one a lot. Christopher George as the track coach. Exactly. And I look for Vanna White, too. Oh, my God, that scene with Vanna White. Yeah. That's pretty epic. The last one I'm going to throw out, and there could be a billion more, but the last one I'll throw out is Richard Wink's 1986 Vamp with the two college students. Everybody knows Vamp. I love that movie. Gotta have some Robert Russell. Yes. When I think of him, I think of my bodyguard. Same.
And meatballs. But you know what? I think Chris Makepeace's best performance might be in Vampire. He's great. And that movie's so fun. What's his name? Snow, Snow, Snow. Snow, the evil guy. The other one I just thought of, what was the French one where she's going to school but she's a cannibal from a couple years back? That's Raul.
Yeah, that's raw where she ate her. Raw. That's it. Raw. Yeah, and I think Anthony R. mentioned that one. I believe somebody did. Well, we must not forget about Arnie. Yeah, Arnie, yeah. Christine, hello. Oh, God, yeah. Did Greg Bench mention that one? He might have, yeah. Might have, yeah. But yeah, it's worth mentioning again. Oh yeah, because Christine is...
One of the great Stephen King adaptations, one of the great John Carpenter films. And yeah, there are scenes that are set in, if not in high school, at least by a high school football field. And there's also Apt Pupil. Oh, yeah. There are so many wicked names. As I hold Cobra Commander in my hand, he is ready to go. Greg, would you say you're holding 12 inches in your hand? I'm holding 12 inches!
of the Cobra Commander. I have a big, heavy 12 inches of Cobra Commander in my hand. He's looking at Pearl right now with his silver face. He is saying... that we appreciate each and every one that tuned in tonight. And we love you guys and gals. Be sure to tune in for the next episode. What does Slappy say? Slappy always just says, fuck you all.
Because Greg is mine. Because Slappy is a haunted son of a bitch. He is. He's a haunted son of a bitch, but he's my haunted son of a bitch. I love me some Slappy boys. He's a haunted S.O.B. that keeps losing his pants. He does, dude. Him and Charlie both, man, I cannot keep your pants on.
I don't know what's going on there. He likes showing the full moon. I'm like, damn it, dude. They'll slide off the little shelf, and then I've got to pick them up, and then I'm sitting here with their pants down to their kneecaps. I'm like, come on, guys. Charlie loves tackle out. Yeah. I love my Slappy and Charlie, man. I love it.
Alright, so with that said, we're going to end this. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, X, all them spots. We also have our YouTube channel going well. Appreciate everybody tuning in to that as well. I'll start posting a few of our YouTube videos over on TikTok. last couple days so if you're on that channel you can check out some of the old videos we have chicken banana
Chicken banana. So yeah, you know what I'm talking about. So we're going to get off here. So email us if you ever want anything. And until next time, like we always like to say, help keep four alive. We do that one movie at a time, one review at a time. Until next time. Peace. Hi. Hi. We're calling in for the.
I guess movies with the schools, and I'm not sure if we're going to be too late or not to know we're calling towards the end there, but the kids really want to call in with some of their movies that they really like, so... Let's go ahead and get started. Lila, what's your first movie you want to talk about? Deuce Bump. Deuce Bump? Yeah, that's a good one. Definitely in a school.
Favorite part about that one, you think? Okay. Next, Eli, what did you want to talk about? I personally liked Happy Death Day. Yeah, Happy Death Day. Yeah, that's also a really good one. What did you like about that one? Honestly, I like how they did the college mascot as the killer. Yeah, that's pretty cool. And that was also one of your suggestions from Doc's shop there. So, so far, watching your first one, was it on your list so far being good? Great.
And Layla, I know you watched one too. Which one do you watch? Do you remember? La Llorona. La Llorona, yeah. Yep, we definitely watched that one from 1931, I believe. How about for you? Did you like it too? Yeah. Awesome. So, so far in the Dog Shock Challenge, we've watched two and it's two for two with the kids. Okay, now back to the movie theme.
Lila, what's the next one you want to talk about after Goosebumps? Goose Spirit. That's also a good one. A little creepy. I guess you're getting a little less scary there, but hey, whatever works. Eli? So, you know, my first one is Happy Death Day. So another shocker, Happy Death Day 2. You. Yeah, that's a good one. Which one actually did you like better? Probably say the first one. Yeah, always good. Can't go wrong with that. Okay, Layla, how about you? School of good and evil.
Yeah, that was a good one. Did you really find it scary, though? I'm not sure it counts as horror. Maybe horror, Jason. What do you think? Yeah. All right. Eli, how about you? Halloween. Okay. Well, you were supposed to be Halloween H2O, but Halloween H20. I forgot the number and letters. and i'm loving it they they got cut off and this actually came in after we recorded so i'm making this on a side recording uh but loving it so far let's go to their next call okay uh
Two calls in a row, and we get benched twice. So I guess the what? Yay! Woo! All right. So I think, Eli, we were on you, and I think you were saying Halloween H20. 20 years later, if I remember correctly. So what was one of your favorite things about that one? That Michael Myers, when Michael Myers killed people, I really loved that.
Yes. It's always something that kills people. You never go wrong with that. Okay. Before I go back to you, Lila, is it okay if I say some of the movies I liked? Yeah. Okay. I'm going to go with Prom Night. I think Prom Night is a good series for this, especially Hello, Mary Lou, Prom Night 2. I'm also going to go with a couple from some big-time celebrities whose careers kind of went downhill after these movies. We had Return to Horror High, which was really a high point for George Clooney.
And then you also had Cutting Class, which is really the highlight of Brad Pitt's career. Most people otherwise probably wouldn't even know who he was if it wasn't for that. Okay, so now... I'll send it back to you, Laila. What's your next movie? Worst Witch. Oh, yeah, Worst Witch. Definitely a classic. Tim Curry did a great job, didn't he? Yeah. Okay, you don't know. The Mean Wizard. You also played It and did some other things. Oh, yeah, I remember. Okay, Eli, how about you? What's next?
Child's Play 3. Oh, yeah. You'd go into the Chucky in the Military Academy. That's definitely a good choice. Lila? Um... Descendants? Yeah, they were evil at the first part of the movie. Yeah. Sure, but... I guess, did you really find that scary, though? Uh, sure? Okay, I guess. I guess we'll go ahead and count it. Yay! Eli, how about you? Uh, Nightmare on Elm Street.
Oh, yeah, that's definitely a good one. What was your favorite thing there? When, uh, shocker, when Freddy Krueger killed people. Yes, that's how it's good, too. Going when people get... and they got cut off and they didn't call back him great calls guys i love that john and those kids are adorable as hell Keep raising them that way, man. We will keep supporting you guys to no end. Love it. Love the laughter. Keep that coming up, buddy. So on to the episode. Now on to the bloopers.
We sing in Ronnie Romp and Ronnie Hawkins and Mary Lou No. No. I was thinking Buddy Holly and the Crickets is Mary Lou. Mary Lou. Wait, no, was that Buddy Holly or was that the Everly Brothers? It was one of those two. I think it was, for some reason, I think it was... I think it was the Everly Brothers. I think it was the Everly Brothers. Now that I'm singing it in my head, it does not sound like Buddy Holly. So I think it was the Everly Brothers. Just look up Romping Ronnie Hawkins.
Mary Lou. I think he just died maybe a year ago. He was a friend with Billy Clinton and Elvis Presley. Oh, Elvis. I thought it was Ricky Nelson. Is it Ricky Nelson? I don't know. You know what? It is Ricky Nelson. You're right. You brat. Jesus Christ. Hello. Ricky Nelson did Garden Party.
Yes, and you know what Garden Party's about? No. It's probably something that isn't quite so wholesome. It's probably sexual. No, what it is is he had a concert towards the end of his career. Well, he ended up dying young. He had a concert at Madison Square Garden where he was trying out new music. And the fans were booing him because they wanted to hear his old standards. And that's why you have the line. You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself. Great little tune. It is.
Yeah, see, I see it both ways. I see, because I've been to shows where bands played more of a newer set, and then you're like, well, damn, where's the classics, right? So I see it both ways. You come to see them play their classics, but then again, maybe see them play something. Bob Dylan went through that thing because he was a folk artist back in the day. He played with Joan Baez and Pete Seeger at a lot of those festivals.
You know, the folk festivals. And then he came in with an electric guitar one time and the crowd was booing him like crazy. And that's when he started to do like Maggie's Farm. Was that Newport? It might have been Newport, you know, because he got us. He played at Newport and, you know, to a lot of acclaim.
You know, there were Joan Baez and Pete Seeger. As a matter of fact, that is the line from American Pie, Don McLean's American Pie, where he says the jester played for the king and queen in a coat he borrowed from James Dean. Bob Dylan. was playing for Joan Baez and Pete Seeger at the Newport Festival. And if you remember his one, oh God, what's his famous album, Blonde on Blonde? He's wearing a red leather coat like James Dean wore in...
rebel without a cause. So that's that line from American Pie. Bob Dylan is the jester. I heard an interview a little while ago with the guys from Styx and they're saying, you know, how do you keep it going all these years and all that? And they said they actually look at the audience to see when people get up to take a piss break.
Because then they know when to mix up the set. We're going to play the best hits when they get out of the bathroom. One of the cardinal sins of a band is when they say, okay, now we're going to play some new stuff. So just take. That's an automatic up to the get beer and pee. That's to say, you know, it reminds me of a story of the old movie Bunny and Clyde.
um uh jack warner was producing it for warner brothers and he didn't he didn't he wasn't too happy about it you know because he was doing it for warren baity because warren baity had a contract to produce certain movies So they had to take it to Jack Warner's mansion to play the movie. And Jack Warner tells him, listen, if I got to take if I could get up and take a piss, you know, the movie's no good.
So, and it was, who was it? It was Arthur Penn telling the story, director Arthur, who directed the movie. And he was, we're sitting there and five minutes in, he gets up to take a piss. Ten minutes later, he gets up to take a piss. And it's like this the whole time. It's just not going well. And at the end of the movie, Jack Warner turns around and he goes,
I don't know what this movie's about. What is this movie about? And Warren Beatty goes, well, Jack, it's kind of like an homage to the old Warner Brothers gangster movies of the 1930s. And Jack Warner was sitting there thinking for a minute and he's smiling a little because he likes that. Then all of a sudden he looks at Warren Beatty and goes, what the fuck's an homage? He didn't speak French too well, I guess. Yeah, right. That's funny.
I'll get into it. I'll get into it on the show because it might not quite be horror. Some people will not look at it as horror, and I don't know that it necessarily is, but it is a genre movie, and I love it, and I'm going to talk about it anyway because it's got plenty of gore.
I apologize to Greg and Pearl to have to sit through my movie. Oh, really? Oh, it's rough, Dave. It's rough. It's really rough. Well, all of a sudden, I'm not so upset. You're not so upset. No, this would have been a movie, Dave.
to cut off in about five minutes you'd be like yeah i'm out but the thing is hey no wait a second i made it through texas chainsaw massacre next generation i mean a half hour of that before the cast was decent and the you know it had good production but the writing was just oh yeah it's basically like freddie got fingered in a horror movie is basically
and what it turned out to be. It's kind of like one-tenth of John dies in the end. Like one-tenth of it. Hey, Dave, not to spoil anything, and Bill, I won't take no thunder from you, but if this helps you, any Dane Cook's in it. So there you go. Oh, okay. That explains it all. He probably wrote the goddamn thing. I chose it sight unseen. Apparently, Russell Wilson just signed a $21 million deal to quarterback the Giants.
Oh, wow. Really? Yep. Oh, that's awesome. They're going to suck again. Well, he's an upgrade over Daniel Jones. I'll tell you that much. Yeah, well, if Eli Manning came out of retirement at his age, he would have been an upgrade over that guy. So if Aaron Rodgers wants to play, it has to be the Steelers.
Yeah, there you go. The Steelers are not going to sign them. Giants sign fucking what? No, I was just saying, it just came across the wire. Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson, $21 million to play with the Giants. Fucking stupid. That's the Giants for you, though. That's why.
Hey, Carson Wentz just went to his, what, fifth team in five years? Did he sign with someone else? I think he's as he went somewhere else now, yeah. Carson Wentz went somewhere else now, and he's going to probably be a backup there too. Exactly. When the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts, all the fans were like, why would you do that? We have Carson Wentz. He's a franchise.
Quarterback. Well, now we know why they did. If you give me $4 million to hold a billboard or a paper for four hours, sure. Why not? there's so many in this category that I'm not thinking like, like my, my, my monsters. And, and one Pearl mentioned that I did think about and I was like, Oh, I should have picked that was boarding school.
You know, all these films that would have worked really well. I went for the first one that I thought of. And I'm happy I did because I love it. I think it's a great movie. But, you know, I don't know. We'll get into it. I think we'll talk about it more in 1998. That's right. Oh, yeah, definitely. Without a doubt. Absolutely. Yeah, I like that movie. I thought it was pretty good. So Tooby's like coming around a little bit.
I could do without the commercial breaks. Yeah. Yeah. I hate the commercial breaks, dude. But all of them are doing that now. And you know what? Here's the thing. Some of the ones you're freaking paying for are doing commercial breaks. Yeah. Now, when you were watching network TV back in the day and they had commercials, you're like, OK, this is how they pay. This is how they get their money is the commercial breaks. So you deal with them.
But now you're paying them and they're getting paid by sponsor. Yeah, that's why it was stupid. Like Netflix and all that. Yeah, yeah. So you're giving them money. The sponsors are giving them money, and yet they're still crying poor. Exactly. When was that? When I was talking about Tommy and Clyde at the beginning. Oh, the very beginning when we first got on today? Yeah. Oh yeah, it's on there.
Oh, God, I can't wait for these. I usually don't listen, but perhaps I will. All right, guys. It's still daylight outside, it feels like. Not really, but anyway. You threw me for a loop. I was all getting ready for 93. Yeah. All right. So Pearl has Wes Craven. Yeah. Greg and Bill, you pick your directors, and I will pick mine after you pick yours. Now, Dave, I was going to ask you, too, though. If you want to pick three Wes Craven films and then a fourth Wes Craven-like film,
Is that what you're thinking? No, I thought, and I may have been off. I thought what we was originally doing were... Like if I picked Wes Craven and I picked, say, Nightmare on Elm Street, then I picked another movie from somebody else that would go good with that. And then I would pick, say, Devil's, what's that, Initiation. And then I pick a movie from another director that would go with it.
that was that is that was awful oh so it's like a chain game all right yeah i'm fine i'm fine with that yeah i'm totally cool with doing the other way the way you were talking about i'm totally no no we can do that yeah is that Pearl has Wes Craven yeah is Wes Craven like okay I'm telling you right now I'm gonna start my first one is gonna be Takashi Miike
Okay, so you're Takashi Miike. So then if I say I choose Audition, and then so if I choose Audition, the next one I would choose would be a movie that's kind of linked to Audition. And then the third one would be what's linked to the second one. Is that how that works? No. Or I'm choosing three Mikes. Yeah. Okay. No, let's just do it the way Dave mentioned. We'll just pick, like, do you want Takeshi?
Yeah, I'll take Mika. Okay, so then just pick three Takeshi movies. You got to pick three Takeshi Mika films and then one alternate Takeshi Mika film. Oh, so I have to have a fourth. Well, you don't have to. Okay. But if you want to, you can have a four. Actually, you know what? I won't take Mickey right now. I want to sit and think about it for a bit. All right, fine. Dave, you can have it if you want. Choose last. You all get your directors and I will pick last. Don Dohler.
There's no fear of us picking Don Doller in films. No, yeah. I have no problem picking last if Don Doller is one of them. What's wrong, Pearl? Okay. No, I'll sit and think about it tonight, and tomorrow I'll email you guys. Very good. I'm just confused. Sorry, I get confused. No, we're going to keep it the way Dave says. So you picked Wes Craven.
You're going to pick three Wes Craven films. No, don't skip that. Just do three Wes Craven films. No, you know, Pearl, you don't have to pick a fourth. Just pick three Wes Craven films that you think would make a great triple feature. Yep. Okay. There you go. It doesn't have to be your favorite. It doesn't have to be the best. Just three Wes Craven films you would pick if you were programming a night at your local theater.
Pick three Wes Craven films that you would pick a show on the big screen. Boom. There you go. Sweet. Okay. Bye. Bye.
