Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome in this time now for our community connection right here on K one, the one you trust, and it's being brought to you by Tall Grass Motors and Arnold Moore and Knee Camp at Funeral Home. Today we're gonna let it go to the birds. And this is in a good way too, because these people take care of our birds. We have Daniel in here with who seems an education program manager with the sut Navy and Research Center. We got wild
bru coming up, Yeah, we sure do. Wild Brus coming up and just around the corner this coming Saturday, the twenty sixth, So if you hadn't got your tickets, it's really time to step on that ball. But it's gonna be a great time. Wild Brew is the original craft brewery and food tasting event in Tulsa, just about an hour southeast here in Bartlesville at
the Cox Convention Center. We're gonna have a couple hundred different bruize available for you, lots of lots of great smells and tastes and foods, and most importantly, you're gonna come out and meet some of our birds, some of our education birds from the Sutton Center are going to be on site now, Daniel, when we were talking in the green room, and folks, we
really don't have a green room. We just say that so we can kind of like pretend we're on real tv U. That you've got like three birds maybe more that you take out to the different schools or two different education programs that right right there on your arm, and they're really pretty cool. Tell us about the big owl you have. Yeah, absolutely, we got a half a dozen birds out there. If some of them are definitely more charismatic
than others. If you've been out to our center, you've probably met cricket. Crickets are great horned owls, one of the biggest owls in North America you're gonna see. And uh and we've got them right here, right here in Bartlesville. And uh and he does great, just kind of hangs out, spins ahead a little bit because how you like me? Now? Yep,
Absolutely, he's a character. He's got lots of personality and makes all those chirps and hoots and hells and well not hows, but they you know, it makes all the typical Alinoises there, you go, nothing out of the ordinary there now tell us about the big red hawk. Oh yeah, So Artemis. Artemis is our red tailed hawk. She's a female, and she's loves to come out to schools and events. She's one of my favorite birds to work with. And uh and like I said, she's going to
be with us out there at wild Brew. But if you don't catch us there, I'm out in the community. I'm I'm at your schools, I'm I'm at your stuff like that. Yeah, if we get regular invitations. Uh. And I love bringing her out because she's, like I said, just such an amazing raptor. Oh man, goodness shakes. And then you've got this great, big golden pheasant. We do we do. So we have a golden pheasant. Her name's Turbo. It's very fast, and Turbo
does flight displays for us, very non threatening as you can imagine. The hawk is big and has those sharp talents, but Turbos the all the other end of the spectrum, and it's very soft and gentle. And so I can come to the younger kids and classrooms and introduce them and get to show them characteristics of our birds and about flight and nature. And in a way that's very very easy to write. To Despite the name, I understand Turbo is just so cool around kids. She often enjoys being petted by it.
Yep, yep. If you're really nice and slow and calm, then we do little displays where they'll walk along the class the tables and you can literally be inchous from this bird and if you're real nice, you might get a petter back. But always ask permission first. Yeah, that's yeah, it's the rule of film there. You kid to keep your thumb too. But you know, but we're talking about the Sutton Avian Research Center in wild Brew.
That's the fun part. But the real nuts and bolts of what goes on at the Suttin Avian Center is that you say, birds that are virtually on the edge of extinction, and the story of the American eagle is just legendary. Here we saved it right here in Bartlesville. That's it's a It's absolutely what we're most well known for. The whole idea with the Sutton Center is finding cooperative conservation solutions. That means cooperating with anybody that wants to save
birds in natural habitats. The eagle story is an amazing one because we effectively lost the eagle in Oklahoma. We didn't have native nesting eagles for some time and it's people. People decided we wanted to do something about that, so we worked with other agencies other states and brought eagles back. We went from having zero nesting pairs in Oklahoma now there's over three hundred nesting pairs that it's just blows my mind. You can't imagine in Oklahoma Waterway without an eagle in
that vicinity. And it's because of work that was done right here in Bartlesville, which is absolutely amazing. It is, it truly is. And now we've got what the masked Bob white that we're working with right we do, we do. We've got two species that we're working with right now, kind of same situation, birds that have really had impacts in their natural environments that
have caused them to struggle and we want to fix that. So the masked Bob white is a bob white quail, not too dissimilar from your northern bobwhite that people know in this area. If you might be familiar those northern bobweight, same kind of story where we're seeing a decline. We're not seeing as many of those as we used to but the mass bob whites are the ones that are on the brink of extinction. People actually thought they were they were
gone. We had years where nobody could find one in the wild, and now we have a third of the world's population here helping to bring the species back from from extinction. I remember being a child in the sixties. You know, you could hear the bob white whistling oh yeah, the job or all the time, and then about the time I would probably get close to twenty, it's like, where did that bird go? Yep? Absolutely, yeah, they just kind of well, hey, so we're nice to bring
them back. Yep. And it all comes down to habitat if people taking care of the properties that they own and and and making sure that it's a habitable situation for these birds, they can absolutely thrive in this area. This is where we used to have them. Yeah, by god, this is great. We know we've got this thing called the prairie chicken. I understand it's not really a chicken, but we call it that because well that's what
we call it. So what's the story on this thing? Absolutely so, Ornithologists and people around the world tend to name things by how we see it a prairie chicken. It's about a size of a chicken. Giver take a little bit. They run on the ground like a chicken, but not a chicken at all. They're actually a grouse ground bird that's native to this area. These birds are found more to the north and west of US now,
but we still see the lesser prairie chicken, grater prairie chicken. Just amazing birds that if you've never seen one, go to our website and look, because it's you would not imagine something like this being here unless you've seen it. But yeah, they're they're here, and we're breeding a subspecies to Outwater's prairie chicken for releases story. A bird that used to do really well and now needs a little bit of help. Ideally, we just get him started
and let nature do the rest. It's great that we have a starting point with you guys. Absolutely abscellently. Now this is the cool thing about Daniel. Yeah, yeah, of course he gets could go out in Boo the show at the school and at your clubs and stuff like this. But you didn't start out as the guy going out to the schools and the clubs. How did you begin there? Sure? Absolutely So when I got my start
at the Setonavian Research Center, it was actually an internship. I came in and said, hey, I hear about the great work you guys are doing. I want in let me, let me, let me help, let me do a little bit of work for the summer. Let's see how this goes. And I started working with that Outwaters Prairie chicken program, with that captive breeding and release program. I was so enthralled. I absolutely loved it.
And when the breeding season was over, I said, hey, tell me about these bob whites, And before you know what, I'm working with another species. So I'm working with two of the most endangered species in North America. And I'm just absolutely blown away by it. And lo and behold, there's opportunity opens up in education, and I'm like, hey, let me talk to people about this. I've had such a great experience and I feel like I can really share this message. So that's that's what I get
to do. Now. I've got some birds that I train up, and I go out and spread the message of conservation in the work that we're doing right here. Well, that is fantastic. And of course we do have the wild brew which, by the way, is the biggest fundraiser I understand for the Set Research Center, and this is where we have a lot of fun raising funds. Yep. Absolutely, So this is the twenty fifth anniversary of wild Brew, and wild Brew is absolutely how you can help fund conservation
research and education. If you like seeing these birds out out at your events and out in your schools, this is how you can help fund that. Go online wildbrew dot org. You can purchase your tickets there. You've got general admission tickets which are still available. We haven't sold out yet. It is a limited number, so if we do sell out, which does happen, Yeah, you don't want to be left waiting at the door, that's for sure, because you can only smell the food, you can't taste it.
Absolutely, we're gonna take a quick break and we'll have a little bit more coming up right here. On gay, Why the one you dressed? How does timhowl at Arnold Moore and he can't fule the home? No, he's done a good job. After a funeral, I'll come in and say, guys, great job. We really hit that out of the part today. The family was well pleased. And that's the phrase right there when a family member tells me, you made this experience so much easier than I thought
it was going to be. Thank you. That is the high five moment right there. And then six months later you run into them in a store or a restaurant and they come up to you and shake your hand, put their arm around your home and say, this is our funeral director. He helped us so much when dad died. He was a nice guy. His staff is so compassionate and so caring. They did a great job. That
is the ultimate experience. They've had time to grieve a little bit and reflect on what you've done, and they come in and they're still on cloud nine because you helped them tribute to someone they really cared about. It'll be all right. We'll walk through this together. Arnold Moore and the Camp Funeral Hall seven ten Dewey, Bartlesville, We'll walk through this together. Hangar uh, this this is so huge you've had to double or triple the space. Yep. Absolutely,
we've had to expand and get bigger and bigger spaces. We've expanded into two huge areas in the Cox Convention Center. Once you come in, you're gonna be greeted with the site, smells and sounds of an absolute party. And and they'll be birds and then will be birds on top of it. I'll be out there some of my education birds will be out there. In addition to the birds who've already talked about, we've got our turkeys will be out there. Wild turkeys are part of Oklahoma, you bet without a doubt,
and you're gonna see some of our captive turkeys. U they're education birds that come out as well. Know they're nuts, they're absolutely crazy. They're vocal competitors. So as loud as I can be, they're gonna try to talk over me, and as loud as the music will be, you'll you'll hear them from the other side of the room. They're great. Oh, this is gonna be fun.
