Episode description

The climate crisis has come into sharp relief in recent years. Ice sheets are melting, sea levels are rising, and extreme temperatures are becoming more common. Here in California, the crisis has become impossible to ignore. This year, more acreage has burned than any year on record, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes, and residents are suffering horrible air quality as fires roar across the West. We know we must transition away from fossil fuels if we want to mitigate these symptoms of the climate crisis. So far, that has proven challenging. But could the tide be turning? Could changes brought about by the pandemic, which follow years of organizing by activists, be the beginning of the end for Big Oil? Terra Verde host and Earth Island Journal Managing Editor Zoe Loftus-Farren discusses the oil industry’s decline with energy analyst, author, and investigative journalist Antonia Juhasz, who recently wrote about the issue for Sierra magazine.
