Episode description

New York Times writer Arthur Brooks once cooked a Thanksgiving dinner for his in-laws in Spain. Over dinner, a couple of questions were asked. The first, “What does this beast eat to be so filled with bread?,” and then, “Should you celebrate this holiday even if you don't feel grateful?”

The first question is just funny. The second should give us all pause. Being grateful is a state of mind. It’s intentional. Too many times, we get caught up in what we don’t have, and let’s be honest, as Americans, we have a lot.

In Psalm 97:12, we read, “Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones, and give thanks to his holy name.”

Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California Davis says, “There's a magnetic appeal to gratitude,” and that it speaks to a need that’s deeply entrenched.

In the Bible, there are powerful examples of people who were grateful for everything God had given them.

In First Samuel, we read about Hannah, who was childless until her sustained prayer moved God’s heart. When she gave birth to Samuel, she was so grateful that she took him to the temple and dedicated his life to service to the Lord.

In the gospels of Matthew and Luke, a Roman centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant who was deathly ill. Though Jesus offered to go to his house, the centurion was so appreciative, his faith compelled him to say that he knew Jesus could heal the servant without traveling to the home, and Jesus rewarded this gratitude by healing the servant in just that way.

Gratitude multiplies itself. Once you become intentional about practicing gratitude, you practice it more and more, and in turn, your faith grows so much that others notice, and in becoming this kind of example, you’ll never have to ask if you should be grateful, even if you don’t feel like it. You’ll feel like it all the time.

Let’s pray.

Father, we want to practice daily gratitude for all you’ve graciously given us. Praising you with our prayers, and being intentional with our gratitude honors you and settles our hearts. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today we're wrapping up our series on gratitude , and this final installment is about being an ambassador for gratitude . Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist working for education and women . In 2005 , while riding on a bus , she was shot in the head by a member of the Taliban and the attack was revenge for her activism .

Incredibly , malala recovered from her gruesome injury and today considers herself an ambassador of gratefulness . Here's a quote I can speak , I can see you , I can see everyone , and today I can speak and I'm getting better day by day .

It's just because of the prayers of the people and because of these prayers , god has given me this new life , and this is a second life . This is a new life and I want to serve the people . Nick Vujicic is another person who has decided that his physical circumstances will not keep him from a life of joy .

Born without limbs yes , without arms or legs , nick leads a full life , including marriage and children . A motivational speaker known worldwide , nick always has a smile on his face and he says this about gratitude If you keep concentrating on the things you wish you had over the things you have , you sort of forget the things that you have .

So be grateful for what it is that you already have . Nick also tells audiences to be thankful for three things most important in their lives . This calls to mind Hebrews 12 28 , which says therefore , let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken , and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe For believers .

This is a beautiful reminder that we are part of a family of believers that will live with God forever . This is the greatest gift we've been given , and it should motivate us not only to be grateful for ourselves , but to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others .

Motivate us not only to be grateful for ourselves , but to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others . By purposing to be a grateful person day in and day out , you will shine a light on the love of Christ for those that you come in contact with , and that is an ambassadorship with eternal implications . Let's pray with eternal implications .

Let's pray , father , god , we want to be your ambassadors here on earth . Many are looking for a life changed by the power of your gospel . Help us to make this a priority . In Jesus' name amen .
