هناك عدة طرق طرحت لوصف وتصنيف التجارب الدينية المتنوعة. أشهرها التصنيف اللى طرحة المفكر الامريكي بيتر دونوفان Peter Donovan فى كتابة المهم "تفسير التجربة الدينية Interpreting Religious Experience" اللى نشرة سنة 1979 وصنف فيه اربع تصنيفات اساسية للتجربة الدينية، هنركز هنا على التصنيفات الثلاثة الاولى لانها الاهم والاكثر ارتباطا بالتجربة الدينية.
