Episode description

Julia Gillard was the first (and only) female Prime Minister of Australia when she served from 2010 – 2013. During her term, she received especially harsh and vulgar criticism from fellow politicians and constituents, culminating in one of the most memorable moments in Australia's Parliamentary history: what's come to be known as the "misogyny speech," where Julia claps back at a male politician of another party for his treatment of women. Nearly a decade later, Julia and Jennifer reflect on that speech and the moments that led up to it. They discuss how Julia rose to the Prime Minister's seat under a "glass cliff" situation; why Australia has managed to select a woman to the highest office, while the United States has not; and why young women shouldn't be deterred by the treatment they've seen women leaders and candidates endure. Plus, Julia explains the recent #MeToo wave that's erupted in Australia.
