¶ Magic Under the Sea
There was a word I wrote down while listening to my guest , mario Ruiz . The word is magic For a lot of us . When magic comes to mind , we think of illusions and tricks . For Mario , he uses the word magic from the informal British definition , which means wonderful and exciting .
Some other similar words could be fascinating , captivating , charming , glamorous and enchanting . As you listen to Mario today , I think you'll find all those words very appropriate as he talks about his love of scuba diving . Hello everyone , my name is Jake Bushman and I am the host of Journey with Jake .
This is the podcast that inspires you to overcome challenges through adventure , and I can't think of a better adventure than exploring the ocean through scuba diving . Mario has overcome his shared challenges and is out there to show you scuba diving is for anyone , and he is making it his goal to help kids with disabilities by teaching them how to dive .

I'm happy to get the Black Scoob-a-Bear himself , mario Ruiz , on the show with me . Let's get to my conversation with Mario . All right .
Well , I am super pumped today because I have Mario Ruiz with me today on the podcast also known as Black Bear Scooba . Did I say that right ? Black Scoob-a-Bear , black Scoob-a-Bear . I got it wrong . Black Scoob-a-Bear , black Scoob-a-Bear . There we go . Black Scoob-a-Bear . Hey , mario , welcome to Journey with Jake .
Thank you , thank you Appreciate it . Yeah , this is awesome .
I'm pumped because I know you and I have been trying to connect for a few months now , so I'm grateful I get a chance to talk to you . I have not had anybody talk about Scoob-a-Bear on the show , so I'm excited about that . That'll be fun . First thing I like to do on the show , though , is I want to get to know who you are a little bit .
If you don't mind , just kind of give us a little background of who you are or where you're from , just so we can kind of get to know you a little bit better .
Well , my name is Mario Ruiz . I was born in Miami , Florida , but originally my family's from Cuba . I left from Florida at the age of 10 and moved to California and been in California since then . I come to Las Vegas because my partner's here in Vegas . I come to see her , but I'm San Franciscan .
San Franciscan , northern California guy , Just kind of reading up on your bio a little bit . I saw a little bio about you and I was reading up on you . It sounds like from a young age you were kind of into water . Being in Miami , I mean that's kind of like it seems like water's right there .
Yes , Tell me about what it was like as a young man and kind of how you got into enjoying the water .
My father used to take us out to the beach over the weekend , so I've always been in the water and he always used to teach me how to float my body in the water and just to be calm and relax in the water . So I've always been really into water and marine life .
It wasn't until I started working at the hospital because we moved to California and , you know , my mom went through her rough patch of life and taking care of two boys by herself was a struggle . So it wasn't until I got to working at the hospital that I saw some nurses that were looking at some pictures , some scuba diving pictures .
I looked at the pictures . I said , ladies , what you looking at ? And they showed me the pictures . I said , oh man , I've always wanted to do that but I couldn't afford it . And she said to me she was like well , you have a great job and career now at the hospital , you shouldn't have no problems paying for some scuba diving lessons .
So the following day she brings me four crates the old milk crates full of dive magazines and I went back to my warehouse , where I was at working at the time , doing some site work , and I started reading the magazines in a like . A week later I was like oh , I want to do this .
Wow , so that's what it took . So you grew up loving the water . Your father would take you to the beach , whatever , perfect , but it wasn't until you were working at the hospital in California that you're like hey , I wanted to do it .
I mean as a youth I wanted to do it , but I knew that that was not in our budget , so it just like flew . You know time , yeah , you know something that was forgotten .
But you know , at work it was that moment in that that water being around , the water was re triggered by my co worker and yeah , it was her that that re triggered that old engine that I thought was shut down somewhere .
That's cool . You still had a burning somewhere in there and boom it , let it out .
Yeah , she just started up the engine for me again . I was having a hard time .
Awesome . So how did you decide ? Okay , I'm reading some magazines and going through some things Did you sign up for a dive lesson , like , how did you ? How did you start this whole process ?
My partner that I'm with now . She was at the time trying to move and I was doing I have a side work that I do , genitory work on the side . I'll come clean up somebody's apartment office and she wanted me to come clean up her place and afterwards she wanted to pay me like $1,200 .
And I was like and it's like I look like paying you that type of money , you know , like charging you that type of money , and you're my friend , you know we've known each other for over 20 something years . I said but you know , I've always wanted to scuba dive and this thing's been in the back of my head .
Which you can do for me is if you buy me like a mask or something , then all I need is something to hold tangible in my hand and I know that will motivate me to go take the class . So we went down to the scuba store in San Francisco bamboo reef and I bought a mask and a snorkel and the rest was history .
I went back home , I got the course and yeah , when it got certified Wow , very nice .
And when you get certified , are you just doing this like in a pool or you out at a lake , Like how does this work ?
Well , it first started with online training , okay , and it shifted from online training over to pool sessions and went from pool session to open water . And at the open water , I did , we did four dives , and that's how we get you , get your certifications , gotcha .
So four dives in the open water ? Yes , where was the open water ? Was this in the ocean ? Or where was this ? Yes , cozumel , mexico , cozumel , mexico . That's not a bad place to go , oh , great , great place . I recommend anybody , yeah , so tell me about those . The first time diving in the open water , what was that like for you ?
Magic , magic . Oh man , magic , magic , magic , priceless . It was like an accomplishment , from where I was adding life and to where I got to , from career change , life change . Everything just was on a positive , just road . And when I , when we just descended , just seeing everything , just blue , it was just so crystal clear and beautiful .
I'm getting goosebumps telling you this . It was just just everything in this humongous turtle just came right in a pack of us and it was like I was telling my future wife said honey , I said it looks like the turtle had paparazzi around them , all the cameras , lights , camera action . I was like I was just blown away .
Just that first dive I got to see turtles , sharks . Everything was like welcome , my friends , we've been waiting to see you and I would imagine you were already on that trek .
You know like to trajectory to be , to do this and be this , but I imagine that moment was just sealed it . I mean , I had to have been just like wow .
Well , it was priceless . Just accomplishments , just the thought in my head that you know I remember just telling people I think I'm gonna go scoot with that . I wanna , you know I wanna do this . And I know some family members and friends kind of gave me that look right here , okay .
And you know I kept on talking about it but it wasn't paying attention too much until I actually took that first dive . And that's what it all just quick and just it's so beautiful , magical down there , just it's so peaceful .
It's so peaceful . Talk about that peacefulness to me for a minute . So what are you here ? I mean you just hear in the breathing , like what kind of what's the sound ? I mean , what's it ?
like I would sound stupid and ignorant , if I could define it with words , because it's such a beautiful sound . I don't think the dictionary has a . There's not a word for that sound . I don't have a word for that sound . It's just the quietness , beautiful peace . Yeah , I wish I had . I wish I had something to tell you on that one , that one you got me .
I don't have a , ha ha ha ha , ha , ha ha .
No , and I appreciate that and I could sense the honesty from that that you and that's where I wish people I wish I had a video option of this too , where people could see your face , because you were really thinking . I could see it in your , in your . You know in your face that you were thinking about it , and sometimes there's just no words for things .
No , it's just no words , it's just , it's just a feeling in my chest that's so warm and grabbing . I can't yeah , I can't explain it . I wish I could . That sound is just , it's an amazing sound it's an amazing sound .
The one thing you talked about with that , that first dive , that you did that first open water dive that you kind of mentioned that you know through a career change and life change and stuff you had gone through , do you mind kind of diving into a little bit of diving in ? Didn't mean that no pun intended on this .
Would you mind kind of , yeah , just kind of what was that ? I mean what , what kind of things did you go through ?
Just dumb things that I put myself in life through wrong company got in . My wrong company picked up bad habits , picked up a cocaine habit that took me almost like six years to knock off . I had my ins and out . It wasn't an everyday thing but I had my fair share when I would go party . I would go party like a party animal .
So I went through that phase and just losing friends and family because of it , you know . So I had to . I had to make a transition
¶ Scuba Diving
.
Did you ever have moments where you , where your confidence was , just wasn't there ? You didn't think you were gonna make it .
Plenty of times , plenty of times .
It wasn't until I got around my brother and my nephew that they snapped it out of me really quick , because I got a world of love and respect for my little nephew and I knew being around him was like a key component to snapping that out of me , because I knew I couldn't come around and hide you know cause he looked at me at a certain scale .
So that was my therapy , that was my clinic , that was my everything was being surrounded by family .
Thank you for sharing that . I know sometimes it's hard to be vulnerable , but I really appreciate that .
In fact , I love sharing it with the world . I feel like it's an opportunity for somebody that's going through it to stop and tell themselves well , there goes , somebody that was doing it was able to snap out of it .
I think it's more of a mind thing and understanding that it's going to take a community of people in order to break that habit , break cycles , create new ways .
That's where we're at Create new ways 100% Well . Thank you for sharing that . I appreciate that . So that's awesome . I mean you kind of came from a dark spot . You had your brother , your nephew to kind of , you know , get you out of that , get that little spark like hey , I can't do this anymore .
Started working at the hospital , found this love for scuba diving . When did your first four dives got certified ? And now I mean I see your post Black Scuba Bear . It's at Black Scuba Bear , right ? Is that your Instagram ?
At . I am Black Scuba Bear .
At . I am Black Scuba Bear . Thank you for creating you . Gotta give me all . We'll do this again at the end so you can make sure everyone knows it correctly I am Black Scuba Bear . And just seeing the stuff you're doing and you always talk about bear blessings . You say that all the time . What does that mean to you ? Why do you say that ?
I send my love and blessings to everybody , and with that , what I mean by that is that I want everybody to feel the blessings that I have inside of me , so that's why I send them blessings .
I love it . You say it all the time and I love that , so thank you for doing that . All right , so let's think of a few stories , because you've been to Cozumel , which sounds awesome . I wanna hear just one or two , maybe three stories of different dives you've been on . I know I think you've been to the Galapagos .
Just a story or two of you know maybe something . It can even be a mishap , or maybe you didn't you run into something you weren't expecting , or I don't you know . Whatever the case may be , let's , if you got a few stories , I would love to hear them .
Galapagos Island . There's so much to say about that place that it didn't take like we'd be here forever . Life change and experience , life change and experience . I got so many stories of that place . Maybe my highlight was scuba diving with Marine iguanas the black iguanas that are only found in the Galapagos Island and diving with schools of hammerheads .
I've always had a dream of being submerged in water and being around some sharks . I remember that they were giving us a rundown as my it was my first time like going to see Pelagic , you know big , big air marine life . And I remember they were giving us the dive brief on the boat .
They were like you know , we're gonna do this if we see a shark , so and then we're going to ring the bell . So I'm thinking , you know , everybody's always said I'm going to see a shark , I'm going to see a shark , but you know it's always been whatever . So , man , I don't know .
I'm getting the goosebumps telling you this the guide , I'm sitting next to the guide and the bell goes off .
I'm looking in a different direction and the bell goes off and the sound of my regulator made this beautiful sound that you could even see it on the social media and it's like bling , bling , bling , bling , and I look over and it's a hammerhead coming directly in our direction and it was the first time I got . I was hypnotized . I was like wow , wow .
So the hammerhead came by , swam by , and then it paused for a second and it took off . And then the school of the rest of them just all came and you see me in the video , just like the divers that were next to me were like Bear , were you trying to talk to us in the underwater Because we hurt you ?
I was like because I was so excited Because you know , you think about it , you dream about it , you hear people and you see it on National Geographic , but not until you're down there . And the way that sharks have been presented to us is not that , it's not that , it's not that .
It's that They've been presented as the enemy .
As the enemy . It's curiosity . It's curiosity with these beautiful animals . They're just curiosity . It's curiosity but their mages in . It is just beautiful to be in the presence of them and it just reminds me of how small I am , the big vast universe , how small we are for sure . Very humbling experience , I tell you .
Was that your first day diving in the Galapagos , when you saw those hammerheads ? My second day diving Tell me about the iguanas . Are they swimming in the water then with you ? They dive in underneath , like how does that work ? They swim .
They swim underwater . They come down 70 feet , wow , eating on the algae . They're amazing . They're amazing and they move so fast and they'll come close . Very amazing animal to just sit and just observe . I sat that just .
The current was too heavy but I was able to lock myself onto a reef and be able to sit and observe and fool around with a couple and take pictures record .
Very cool . Wow , I know just the iguanas they have like in Florida . I know they swim , I mean , I've seen them swim . My brother has an iguana . He takes it with him to the pond all the time in South Carolina he goes swimming , you know .
I mean , so I knew they swam but I didn't realize they dove under like that and that's pretty incredible , you know you asked me about a moment .
I got something that I could share . I was in the water and I had to have been at least about , I would say , anywhere between 70 to 90 feet under . We were going down . We were supposed to be going down to about 130 . In that area that's where we're going to see some moonfish .
As I'm going down and I keep descending , a pelican bird yes , I got it in one of the videos . I have to forward it to you the pelican comes flying right past us and I remember that I got back to the States and I still didn't see the video .
I did not say anything and I talked to my fiance and said Honey , I don't know if I relapsed in the Galapagos Island , but I seen something that I said , honey , I seen something that just blew my mind away . So I went for like days looking for the video and finally I found it . I said , look , I told you it wasn't a relapse .
I said , look , this Pelican was . It came to fish for fish at past 70 feet . It was the most amazing and impressive thing that I've ever seen in my life and that I told . I said it moved the bird , the Pelican bird , as the number one hunter in the world on my list .
That's incredible .
Oh then a lion therefore .
I did not realize they could go that . I mean , I've seen birds diving the water . You see that I didn't know they could go that deep . I didn't know that either . Yeah , I didn't know . That's why you're looking to the side like , wait a second .
Yeah , it came by and even in the video you'll see my reaction was like what's that ? And just kept diving . I was like , okay , whatever , maybe I'm losing my head down here , Wow , but yeah .
Unbelievable .
I've been experienced . I've been blessed to do some diving in the cenotes in Mexico and I also done Sucural Island , which is a known first pelagic life , from humpback whales to a whale sharks , hammerheads , the lopagos sharks , silkies . I had my first three encounterment with tiger sharks in Sucural . That was a .
That one , right there , made my heart stop for a quick second , ha ha ha ha ha .
Tiger sharks you know they're in the news a lot because they attack people a lot , but what's it like when you're down there with them ?
When I first saw her it was like yeah , she swept me off my feet . I was like I could have easily been aiding because of the way I was just so hypnotized and looking and just have just amazed at how humongous this shark was and just how it just was moving so slow .
And I was like just hypnotized and I remember looking at her I said that shark wanted to move at a different speed , Like we're it's over . I didn't understand that till I was down there and I was like wow , just an amazing , amazing , an amazing , an amazing animal .
Amazing shark Once again , making you feel small again .
Yes , very humbling experience , very humbling experience . And then she came back . It was like she wrapped around and when she came back she was with her two , two cubs I don't juveniles so it was three of them and I was like , even if juveniles were so humongous , I was like wow .
What an experience . How about some of those whales and things ? Have you seen whales and things like that as well ?
Only one whale . Only one whale . My dream is to be able to have an encounter with workers and humpbacks . That's the ultimate picture that I want to hang up some day .
What would you say is your favorite place to Scuba ?
The Lopagos Island has that . I even see other places online and like I'm going to the Philippines in 2024 to do a photography workshop there and that's supposed to be like one of the top destinations in the world , and like when I see it on social media and on the YouTube channels , it was like I look at it in the back of my head .
I'm like , yeah , that's nice . The Galapagos just left a special . I don't know . I think it was just . It wasn't only the dive , it was just . It was the diving , it was the people , it was the community . Yeah , it just left a hit here .
Yeah , special place for you . Yeah , special place .
Now I was going to say there was one last place on the planet that they said there , where would you want it to be ? It's right there .
The Galapagos very good . It's a good way to look at it , Cause I'm sure there's tons of places you want to go that you haven't been . So you mentioned the Philippines . Is there any other places on your list that you hoping to go to that you haven't been to Before ?
with blessings and health . And Antarctica is the final . That's the ultimate lifetime . That's the ultimate lifetime trip and goal is to go do some diving at an article .
Wow , that would be incredible . I've seen a few people on social media who dive there . That's just unbelievable to me .
My brother , ed , just went out there just this year and the pictures that he has are just amazing . I have to send you his Instagram so you can check him out . He's amazing .
Yeah , yeah , absolutely . You kind of talked about something . You said you're going to the Philippines to do some photography . Is that kind of what you're getting into then , with the whole scuba diving , some underwater photography ? Do you mind telling us about that ?
The underwater photography is where I have found peace and tranquility . When I go to scuba diving , it just puts me at a place of peace .
Yes , I am taking photography in a direction where I actually want to take kids with disability and troubled minors scuba diving into a photography course to be able to show them a different experience , other than what they deal with .
And if you're somebody with disability , to give you that confidence believe that you're the gear , we're here with you and you can achieve .
That's awesome . That's quite the goal to have . It's probably built upon a lot of your passion , maybe some of the things you went through . Yes , what does it take to make that ?
happen Right now . I'm working on putting my team together a lot of diving and a lot of training and a lot of being in community with the right people .
You got to use who you are , use your personality and put it out there . Good for you . I think that's impressive , I think that's honorable , but also , you know , it's a way for you to keep doing the thing that you love , yes , and share that with others , which I think is fantastic . Share those bare blessings with others .
I'm a scuba diving and photography is taking me around the world .
I've done sports photography , I've done photography , so now I have the passion for photography already , and just I've been doing some photography underwater for the last year and a half , but I've finally been able to get my equipment , my actual solid equipment that I could take and get some professional shots .
There's something that the youth in the world could be motivated and inspired by .
Speaking of that , so speaking of scuba diving for people in general , I don't know if there's ever a perception that scuba diving is only for a certain type of people or a certain class of people . Obviously , you've changed that , right .
I mean , talk to me about that part of it , because I'm seeing you out there and like this is awesome , you know , tell me about that .
Diving is for everybody . I don't care what color you are . I mean for me . I'm a color blind person and what I mean by that is that to me , in this world , we're all one . So I don't care if you're white , you're black , you're Asian . You're all in one to me , you know . So I love you all the same way . Hope you love me the same way , absolutely .
¶ Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is for anybody that wants to enjoy outdoor activities and take that outdoor activities into a , take it to another level . You know it takes a lot of confidence and commitment to just tell yourself here trust this system to keep you safe , or breathe Any last minute thoughts and then maybe I want to hear another story or another experience of diving .
One thing I noticed that you tend to do I don't know maybe . I saw one of your videos on Instagram as you're going out through the boats , going out to wherever your dive site is going to be . You kind of seem like you're in this zone . You're kind of like just you know .
You're kind of like just grounded , focused I don't know what the word is so kind of take me through just a day of like what it's like from , kind of from beginning to end , and kind of what you do to prepare yourself and , if you don't mind , just kind of give me that experience .
Well , you know , I try to , like I prepare myself every dive , like the night before , the afternoon before , like I don't even wait for the night , like if I was diving tomorrow at seven o'clock in the morning , five , oh yeah , I would already been , everything would have been packed and I'd be going to sleep in 30 minutes .
Usually I go to sleep really early because I know that is wearing tear and depends if I'm doing anywhere between two to five dives , if I'm doing it off a live aboard boat , and I know chances are I'll be diving from four to five times a day .
What I like to do usually is I won't eat breakfast because I've always been paranoid of having to use the bathroom underwater and I don't want no incident . So , as of right now , I've been successful . I'm a hundred .
I think I got about 174 dives in right now and yeah , I think , as of right now , they all the guns in the world that I've not had that incident .
But I'm not going to wood for you right now .
Yes , so what I do is usually I have everything prepared . I'll get to the dive site . I like to talk to the captain and the dive guy to kind of have an idea of where we're going to dive , what's the dive guides and captain's expectation of each diver and if there's any extra security .
Cautious , any brief extra briefing that I know they give in a dive is like I want to like get here twice just to be extra secure , because I know sometimes when there's multiple people on a dive , but it could , it could get a .
It could get a bit difficult if somebody's getting their BCD and the cylinder the BCD on a cylinder and getting it ready to check the air to make sure they got the 3300 PSI to get underwater .
I had no idea what you were saying when you said the BC , whatever that PSI .
that's the air , the amount of air that you have in your cylinder , gotcha .
Okay , and your cylinder , which is your tank .
Yes .
Is that okay , perfect .
So I usually do that and then I like to talk to anybody that's diving with us .
I'll just a quick chat , like to introduce myself and chat with them , because once the boat starts moving and leaves , and once it starts leaving the dock , then it's not that , it's like I like to just get into a zone , focus on where I'm going , make sure that I'm gonna be okay , pay attention to any of my surroundings to see if there's a weak link around
that I might have to . You know , just as a bear , just my instincts of having to help or protect somebody , so it's like I'm paying attention to everybody . So I kind of get quiet and I just dial in and I'm paying attention to everybody .
I like that .
Yeah , because I've already been on the boat prior to everybody getting all sorry know the briefing , so now it gives me a time to just sit back and evaluate , as just check my surroundings .
And I think that's gonna serve you well for helping kids , helping kids with disabilities , because you have that extra precaution , which I think is great .
Yes , because , yeah , I think some people throw things to the wind and just like , oh , it's good , and I like the fact that you're making sure I'm blessed to have been trained by some great folks Lou Note , scuba and Ena from Cosmow Just some folks that put me in a position to be alert and responsive like that .
I've had a situation on a boat where I had to go help a gentleman and I didn't even I don't I'm working on my rescue certification right now but he sent me a message later on that night . He was like man , thank you , you saved my life . Man , we were 60 feet down there . Man , you saved my life .
And when he said that , I was like holy , ooh , wow , like I didn't hear it . Like yeah , Absolutely , Because I had to grab him and swim him all the way to the guide and yeah , it was just a panicky moment for him and I felt that I was kind of observing that on the boat .
But surely enough , it happened in the water and I'm happy that I've been trained to be alert and responsive and because of that , preparation is putting me in a situation to be able to give a hand in the time of being you alluded to it a little bit too .
When you go out there , that what it kind of puts your body through , because I mean you don't even think about that . Are you tired at the end of a dive day , like I mean , it sounds like it can worry out a little bit possibly .
It depends what type of air I'm diving with . If I'm diving with regular air , I'll get tired . The second I get off the boat , the second dive is like I'm yelling for bed , pillow , food , water . Yes , and I'm having a whole argument in my head with myself hurry up , get down there , get out , get on . But if I'm driving diving with nitrox , not at all .
I after four dives , I go home and watch some dive videos . I'm able to download my pictures of the day .
Interesting the different type of air . That's a whole long conversation . Yeah , no , I don't . I know nothing about it . So that's interesting . I didn't realize that when you get into diapoint nitrox more time .
You can spend more time looking water . It's just a lot of benefits to it .
Wow , interesting . So at the end of the day , when you're coming back in , what's going through your mind , when you're coming after a day of diving , what's your thoughts ?
First of all , I'm thanking all the gods across the world for getting me and everybody that's on a boat back on a boat and getting us to shore to last mile and plan where we're gonna go , eat and be in community to share pictures . So usually I'm just thinking about calling my fiance , calling my twin brother , letting them know I made it back .
That's my first thing to give her a call . Let's say I'm back on a boat , we're good , and from there I just start thinking I'm gonna get together , we're getting together , share dive pictures and be a community .
Be a community , have that camaraderie . It's the price . I love that . About the different communities , you know , I talk to runners and I talk to people who do different things and I've talked to a couple of fly fishermen now and it's just the community that's there amongst them is fantastic . I love it .
That's great If somebody wants to get in touch with you and maybe have you as someone who can do some underwater photography for them or just support what you're trying to do with the disabled kids , getting them to dive . Where can people find you ? How can they get in touch with you ?
I'm on all social media platforms , that I am Black Stuber Bear and also I'm actually finishing up getting my website off the ground , which will be wwwblackstuberbearcom .
Through those outlets , you'll be able to reach me and leave me a message , give me a follow , and right now , in fact , we have put up a GoFundMe for our goals towards working with disabilities , so definitely be a blessing . I'm not here asking for no money , but if somebody could just push the share button , that's more valuable to me right now .
