Episode description

In this episode of Journal Party, we tackle the often debilitating habit of perfectionism. Perfectionism can lead to stress, burnout, and a cycle of self-criticism, but through guided journaling, we can learn to overcome it with self-compassion. Join Alex as he guides you through five powerful journal prompts designed to help you recognize and challenge your unrealistic standards, offer yourself the kindness you give to others, celebrate your daily successes, prioritize joy, and embrace imperfection for positive outcomes.

Journal Prompts:

  1. What are the unrealistic standards I hold myself to, and how do they impact my life?
  2. Think about a recent situation where you felt you failed. How would you comfort a friend in the same situation?
  3. List three things you did well today, no matter how small.
  4. What activities bring you joy and make you lose track of time?
  5. Describe a time when you embraced imperfection and it led to a positive outcome.

You're listening to the Journal Party podcast, where every week we get together for the ultimate journal jam sesh as we journal through life together as a community. My name's Alex Gallner and I'll be your host, so here's how it works. I'll give you a journal prompt in a groove and you just start writing. After a few minutes, you'll hear a little bell that sounds like this, and we'll move on to the next prompt.

After a couple minutes, you'll hear that bell again, and we'll move on to the next prompt, and we'll just keep going on like that till we're finished. Feel free to write on whatever you like, or even just follow along in your car. If you finish before the bell, you can try to dig deeper and elaborate, or just chill out and enjoy the tunes. Don't overthink it. There's no wrong way to do this. So, welcome to the party. What's up, party people?

Alex here, and welcome back to another episode of Journal Party. Today, I want to talk about something that's been on my mind lately. Perfectionism. You know, that little voice inside that tells you nothing's ever good enough? Well, we're gonna tackle that head on today. Perfectionism can be a real roadblock, whether it's in our personal lives, careers, or even in our creative pursuits. It often leads to stress, burnout, and a never ending cycle of self criticism. But, it's Here's the good news.

We can learn to overcome it. That's right. Today we're going to be jamming through five journal prompts to help you to embrace self compassion and kick perfectionism to the curb. So open up that journal and let's get this party started. Here comes prompt number one. What are the unrealistic standards I hold myself to, and how do they impact my life? Take a few minutes to write down those high bars you've set for yourself.

Reflect on how these standards affect your day to day life, your mental health, and your relationships. Remember, this is a judgment free zone. It's all about awareness and understanding, so just start writing. Prompt number two. Think about a recent situation where you felt you failed. How would you comfort a friend in the same situation? Now direct that compassion toward yourself. Write a letter to yourself offering the same kindness and understanding.

Perfectionism often makes us our own harshest critics, but we deserve the same compassion we give to others. So, write about it. Prompt number three. List something you did well today or yesterday, no matter how small. It's time to celebrate your successes. By acknowledging your achievements, you shift your focus from what's wrong to what's right. This practice helps build a more positive and realistic self image. Keep writing! Prompt number four.

What activities bring you joy and make you lose track of time? These are often the moments when we're least focused on being perfect and most engaged in the present. Write about how you can incorporate more of these joyful activities into your daily routine. Prompt number five. Describe a time when you embraced imperfection and it led to a positive outcome. Maybe it was a project at work, a conversation with a friend, or a creative endeavor.

Reflect on how letting go of perfectionism helped you to grow, learn, or simply enjoy the moment more fully. Alrighty, party people. Awesome job today. Overcoming perfection isn't about lowering your standards. It's about embracing your humanity and finding joy in the journey. Remember, perfectionism is an illusion. I'm sorry. Perfectionism, loser. Perfectionism is very real. Anyway, we won't edit that out in the spirit of perfectionism. We're trying to beat it. Anyway, progress is real.

That's what I'm trying to say here. And if today's prompts resonated with you, keep journaling about them throughout the week.
